Happy Inauguration (President Bill Clinton) 1993

New York, NY: Harper Collins, 1993 Framed signed print. This is the only political art that Sendak ever produced. It was commissioned by Sendak's publisher Harper Collins as gifts for one of Bill Clinton's first inaugural parties. This image was also published in major national newspapers and sent selectively to leading bookshop clients The exact limitation is unknown but it is estimated that 500 to 1000 copies were printed. No copies were ever available for commercial sale, nor were prints ever issued autographed, except for the copy sent to the White House. It is estimated that between 500 to 1,000 were printed, far fewer were later signed by Sendak. The image appears to be a duotone from graphite, with red and blue single rules surrounding the image area. This work measures approximately 12 1/2" x 13" (unframed). Signed in blue ink at the bottom right corner by the illustrator, just below the blue printed border. The image shows the United States Capitol dome with portraits of Bill and Hillary Clinton along with their daughter Chelsea and their cat Socks. They are surrounded by children including Mickey from “The Night Kitchen,” Rosie from "The Sign on Rosie's Door", Moishe, one of the monsters from Sendak’s classic children’s book “Where The Wild Things Are,” Mickey from "In the Night Kitchen", Jennie from "Higglety Pigglety Pop!", along with characters from his yet to be published "We Are All in the Dumps with Jack and Guy" which was issued later in 1993. The text at the bottom states, “A Jubilant Welcome For Our New President And His Family! From The Children Of America, Maurice Sendak, And HarperCollins Publishers – January 20, 1993.” Professionally matted and framed in grey wood. Included is the original card board box, with text printed on one side that reads " Special Gift - Open Immediately".

Lexikon für Theologie und Kirche. [LThK / 3. Auflage / 11 Bände]. Begründet von Michael Buchberger. Herausgegeben von Walter Kasper mit Konrad Baumgartner, Horst Bürkle, Klaus Ganzer, Karl Kertelge, Wilhelm Korf, Peter Walter. Band 1: A bis Barcelona. - Band 2: Barclay bis Damodos. - Band 3: Dämon bis Fragmentenstreit. - Band 4: Franca Hermenegild. - Band 5: Hermeneutik bis Kirchengemeinschaft. - Band 6: Kirchengeschichte bis Maximianus. - Band 7: Maximilian bis Pazzi. - Band 8: Pearson bis Samuel. - Band 9: San bis Thomas. - Band 10: Thomaschristen bis Zytomyr. -Band 11: Nachträge, Register, Abkürzungsverzeichnis.

Freiburg, Basel, Rom & Wien: Herder 1993-2001. (.)" - Mit einigen Bleistiftanstreichungen in Band 1 und 7. - Insgesamt nahezu tadellos erhaltenes Exemplar. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 21500 Gr. 8° (25 x 18 cm). God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, or Pearls Before Swine

New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston. FIRST EDITION. Original cloth, original dust jacket. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY VONNEGUT on front free endpaper: "Kurt Vonnegut / Oct 3 1993 / Sagaponack NY." Vonnegut's "fifth novel, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, is the story of a tenderhearted but hapless millionaire who hopes to create a better world by being intensely sympathetic to all of his fellow human beings; it was published by Holt, Rinehart & Winston in 1965… Reviewer Martin Levin, writing for the New York Times, described Mr. Rosewater as 'a book that is devoid of anything as square as a plot, its text broken up into short epiphanies, like poetic cantos, with typographical squiggles for segues'. Levin describes here the start of the style that would mark Vonnegut's work for the next several decades. Mr. Rosewater is also the novel that introduces Vonnegut's recurring character and sometime alter ego, science fiction writer Kilgore Trout. Despite his reluctance to characterize the book as a proper novel, Levin nevertheless praises Vonnegut as 'a writer with an excellent ear, a knack for arresting imagery, and a Message'" (Farrell, Critical Companion to Kurt Vonnegut). The book was inscribed at Sagaponack, NY, where Vonnegut lived for many years. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1965. Octavo, original half-cloth and color-patterned boards, original dust jacket. Book near-fine with some wear to spine and a very minor brown spot in the extreme margin of three leaves; dust jacket near-fine with only light, general wear. An exceptionally nice copy of one of the more challenging Vonnegut first editions to find in good, collectible condition and with a particularly strong Vonnegut signature.

        TEXT FROM THE SUFFRAGES

Savoy, mid-15th century. n. Partly because his nearly nude body has served as subject matter for countless artists, Sebastian has always been one of the most widely popular of Christian martyrs, and his role as patron saint of plague victims gave his popularity a special importance during the bubonic plagues of the 14th and 15th centuries. The present miniature depicts the most dramatic (though not the final) event in the saint's life. Sebastian is shown bound to a pillar, his body full of arrows and blood dripping from his wounds. The artist depicts the two archers in close proximity--one wears a bright red, expensive doublure and leans into his taut bow, just moments away from shooting, while the other bends down to take up another arrow to reload. The muscular straining of the assailants conveys a sense of their brute power and, by contrast, the saint's vulnerability. Embracing his martyrdom, Sebastian remains calm and unyielding, his eyes locked with those of his torturers. Despite this attempted murder, Sebastian did not actually die from his wounds here and was, in fact, nursed back to health by Saint Irene. He was later clubbed to death (an event with much less visual potential and consequently almost never seen in iconography of the period). The physiognomy of the figures in our painting indicate that it is the work of an artist in the circle of the Vienna Roman de la Rose Master, a Lyonnaise artist first identified by François Avril in 1993 (François Avril and Nicole Reynaud, "Les Manuscrits à Peintures en France 1440-1520," 1993, pp. 198-201). Given its more profound landscape and the gold rules around three of the four sides of its floral border, the leaf was likely done around 1460-65, when that stylistic feature began to appear in the Master's work.. 148 x 106 mm. (5 3/4 x 4 1/4"). Single column, 17 lines of text in a fine, small bâtarde. With one two-line gilt initial on a blue and pink ground, one four-line initial painted blue and pink on a gold ground, and A STRIKING HALF-PAGE MINIATURE SHOWING TWO ARCHERS AND SAINT SEBASTIAN, the scene surrounded by a border of acanthus leaves, vines, and floral and fruit motifs. Head and fore edge trimmed close but not affecting the decoration, just a hint of yellowing, otherwise IN FINE, FRESH CONDITION, the colors rich, the details crisp, and the vellum clean and smooth. MESMER SECRETS OF THE HUMAN FRAME

New York: Granary Books, 1993. Quarto. Bound in perforated metal sheeting with wire mesh and plastic film endleaves. Illustrations and center-fold pop-up. Fine in metallic finish slipcase. First edition of the artist's realization in book form of her 1990 installation. One of fifty numbered copies, in addition to ten hors commerce copies and 6 extra copies for the Borowsky Center. The work was printed by offset in several shades of metallic ink by Lori Spencer on both transparent and opaque stocks, and was bound by Daniel Kelm at Wide Awake Garage. MESMER "was conceived at the intersection of the birth of psychoanalysis, the origins of cinema and the transformations of the industrial revolution. It is a 'philosophical toy' which makes reference to those machines which were the precursors of cinema and to the gothic novel, a genre which helped give this piece its form and is itself the precursor of science fiction" - Artist's web site commentary.

        TEXT FROM SEXT

France, ca. late 15th century. n. The moment being portrayed in this charming, elegant miniature emphasizes the humanity of Christ, who is reacting with the enthusiasm of any small child for a bright, shiny gift. The two kings holding urns of frankincense and myrrh seem to be looking at each other in concern, perhaps wondering if their offerings will be received with the same delight. The stable is a lean-to set against the wall of a crenellated castle, contrasting the lowliness of the Son of God's birthplace with the trappings of worldly power. The star that guided the Magi shines over the distant hills. Our painter was influenced by the Master of Robert Gaguin, an artist active in Paris in the 1490s who was first identified by Nicole Reynaud in 1993 (François Avril and Nicole Reynaud, "Les Manuscrits à Peintures en France 1440-1520," pp. 262-64). Of the three codices by the Robert Gaguin Master illustrated by Reynaud in this work, the partitioned borders and initial types in the Prayer Book of Geoffrey de La Croix (Paris, SMAF, Ms. 92-1), painted around 1495, are the closest to those here. The quality of painting is very high, with convincing facial features, garments, and architectural elements. And the palette is unusual, with its soft greens and yellows and immensely pleasing complementary powder blue. Sister leaves with additional miniatures occupy the following two entries.. 180 x 132 mm. (7 1/8 x 5 1/8"). Single column, six lines in a bâtarde hand. Attractively matted in a beautiful antique gilt wooden frame. Small initials in colors and partly in gold, a four-line initial in brushed gold on a blue ground stippled with gilt dots, its center with a floral spray, above this A LARGE MINIATURE OF THE ADORATION OF THE MAGI, the Virgin sitting at the stable entrance holding the Christ Child, who is reaching eagerly for the chest of gold extended by a kneeling monarch, while the two other royal visitors stand waiting to present their gifts, the scene ENCLOSED BY A THREE-QUARTER FLORAL BORDER CONTAINING brushed gold shamrocks with sprays of blue flowers, pink lotus blossoms and tiny gold berries on hairline stems, and A DELIGHTFUL PEACOCK AT THE FOOT, a pink ribbon inscribed with a Latin motto twining around it. AN ESPECIALLY FINE LEAF, the paint and gold intact, and everything smooth and fresh. The moment being portrayed in this charming, elegant miniature emphasizes the humanity of Christ, who is reacting with the enthusiasm of any small child for a bright, shiny gift. THE BIRDS OF NEW GUINEA and the Adjacent Papuan Islands, including Many New Species Recently Discovered in Australia. Volume II. (two)

Melbourne: Hill House, 1993. Completed after the author?s death by R. Bowlder Sharpe. Limited facsimile edition, (this copy in the original publisher's packaging). Original red Japanese Saifu cloth gilt; pp. [iv], plus 58 fine coloured plates with accompanying text (inc. cucckoo-shrikes, fairy-wrens, flycatchers and others). One of series of remarkably exact same-size facsimile of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. A fine copy. Publisher's blurb thus "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. gilt stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board. Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." A POSTAL SURCHARGE MAY APPLY ON THIS HEAVY BOOK.. Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. Elephant Folio.

They are surrounded by children including Mickey from ?The Night Kitchen,? Rosie from "The Sign on Rosie's Door", Moishe, one of the monsters from Sendak?s classic children?s book ?Where The Wild Things Are,? Mickey from "In the Night Kitchen", Jennie from "Higglety Pigglety Pop!", along with characters from his yet to be published "We Are All in the Dumps with Jack and Guy" which was issued later in 1993. The text at the bottom states, ?A Jubilant Welcome For Our New President And His Family! From The Children Of America, Maurice Sendak, And HarperCollins Publishers ? January 20, 1993.? Professionally matted and framed in grey wood. Included is the original card board box, with text printed on one side that reads " Special Gift - Open Immediately".
