        Teaching with Calvin and Hobbes

Playground Pub, 1993. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good-. Paperback. First and only edition. Dog ear and owner name blacked out on front end page. All else clean and unmarked. Binding strong, spine uncreased. Light cock to spine, light curling to corners. Tiny scuff to front cover. Very good minus. Stored in protective sleeve. Additional photos available upon request. Teaching with Calvin and Hobbes is one of the rarest Calvin and Hobbes collectibles. Bill Watterson seldom granted license to use his comic strip for any reason. Only after Mary Santella-Johnson and Linda Holmen communicated with him personally, relating their success using Calvin and Hobbes to teach children with disabilities, did he grant them permission to reuse his work. A very unique and wonderful addition to Bill Watterson's legacy.

Photographic portrait of King Tidy, Brisbane, circa 1868

[Title from engraved breastplate worn by the subject]. Albumen print, carte de visite format, 90 x 60 mm, on mount 104 x 65 mm; numeral "9" inscribed in ink in contemporary hand at lower margin recto of mount; verso blank; the albumen print in fine condition with rich tonal range. We can locate only two other copies of this image in public collections. One - an example with somewhat gaudy watercolour embellishment - is contained in the Archer Family Album in the John Oxley Library; it is reproduced as Plate 1 in Michael Aird's Portraits of our elders(Brisbane : Queensland Museum, 1993). The other is held in the Pitt Rivers Museum (1998.307.387). The Pitt Rivers example was probably collected around 1868 by J.F. Berini, one of numerous travellers known to have sent photographs of indigenous subjects to the Hamburg studio of the photographers and publishers Carl and Frederick Dammann, and it bears a contemporary inscription verso: "King (Chief), living not far from Brisbane, Australia, who although in an entirely savage condition was a patron and friend of the natural scientist Dr. Berini on several occasions. He gave Berini particularly a secure escort on his way to areas never before explored or entered by a white man." This imposing portrait, photographed from a low angle in order to invest its subject with power and gravitas, was most likely taken in the studio of John Watson, Daniel Marquis or Thomas Bevan. The photographer has purposely composed the sitter in the manner of a classical statue - we are instantly reminded of the Roman god Neptune or his Greek counterpart, Poseidon - with Tidy's three items of regalia prominent: his breastplate (sometimes referred to as a king plate or gorget), which would have been given to him by local white authorities or settlers; a crown, perhaps made from tin, and also made for him by Europeans; and a spear - the only one of the three objects of indigenous manufacture. Although it is tempting for us to conclude that Tidy's dignity transcends the mocking nature of the accoutrements bestowed upon him by white society, this interpretation of the portrait may be a little simplistic: it is not for us to judge whether or not these symbols carried significant meaning for Tidy, and in fact his expression may connote a fierce pride in wearing them, rather than a defiant attitude in the face of derision.

Sylva anachoretica Aegypti et Palaestinae. Figuris aeneis et brevibus vitarum elogiis expressa. Abrahamo Blommaert inventore. Boetio a Bolswert sculptore.Antwerp, Hendrik Aertssens for the author, 1619. 4to. With 2 engraved title-pages and two series of 25 numbered engravings by Boetius à Bolswert after Abraham Bloemaert (14 x 9 cm), lacking the engraved frontispiece. Contemporary vellum.

Brunet I, col. 976; M.G. Roethlisberger, Abraham Bloemaert and his sons (1993), vol. 1, pp. 171-183 and vol. 2, figs. 262-317; cf. Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) II, p. 66, nos. 355-378 & 379-403 (1610 ed.), III, p. 63, nos. 96-119 (“1612” ed.). First edition published in book form, with letterpress text and a new title, of two series of engravings depicting male and female saints and hermits. They were made by the notable Dutch engraver Boetius à Bolswert (ca. 1585-1633) after the well-known Dutch painter and draughtsman Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651), with short letterpress biographies by the Jesuit hagiographer Heribert Rosweyde (1569-1629).The prints were originally published ca. 1610 as two separate series by Boetius à Bolswert himself, containing only the name of the saints as in the present state. A second state of the plates is known with a two-line distich below the prints, usually dated 1612, but according to Roethlisberger these may actually have been published after the present 1619 publication in book form. With an inscription on title-page ("Donum R.P. Heriberti Rosweydi Soc. Jesu."), saying the book was donated by the Jesuit author of the text, Heribert Rosweyde. Furthermore with a bookplate, collector's stamp and several early owner's inscriptions, two of them struck through. Lacking the dedication and engraved frontispiece (which should follow the letter-press general title-page). Slightly browned throughout and some foxing and minor soiling to the outer edges. Binding slightly warped and with some minor damage to the spine, but otherwise good.

Zaagmans comptoir almanach op 't jaer... M.DC.LXXVII. na de nieuwe en oude-stijl. Amsterdam, Gillis Joosten Zaagman, 1677. 4to. With woodcut view of the Amsterdam stock-exchange on title-page, title-page and calendar printed in red and black, 12 woodcuts illustrating each month and 2 small woodcuts. Contemporary marbled wrappers.

STCN (1 copy); not in Waller; cf. Salman-Verhoeven, in: Quaerendo 23 (1993), pp. 93-114; Vandenhole, p. 155 (ed. for 1673, printed by Zaagman for Pieter Roose at Brugge). Second copy located of an early edition of a popular Amsterdam almanac. In the second half of the 17th century Zaagman held the privilege for the "comptoir" or office almanac, which was very lucrative because it securely held a large market each year. The beautifully designed woodcuts at the head of each month show lovely seasonal views. The present quarto edition was the most serious with a calendar, including the times of the sun and moon, tides, dates of fairs, weather forecasts, monthly prognostications, etc. One quire is added with extra explanations of the almanac and calendar, time tables of post coaches, travel coaches, ships and barges, a table of money values, the opening times of the city gates, etc.Only one other copy is known, located in the national library in The Hague and containing two additional leaves. Our copy is interleaved and although most of these leaves are left blank, some contain interesting manuscript notes relating to bakers applying for a job, corn sent to a mill, work to be done at houses in the country, bills for the care of sick soldiers, etc.Spine tattered, otherwise in very good condition.

Constitution of the Republic of Hawaii. Promulgated July 4th, A.D. 1894.[Honolulu, 1894]. 22 x 14.5 cm. Stapled leaves in publisher's original blue/green wrappers, with letterpress title on front. Kept in modern half morocco clamshell box.

Forbes 4569 (55-page issue); Streeter 3766 (55-page issue); cf. A.F. Lee, The Hawaii state constitution: a reference guide (1993), p. 5. The 56-page issue, plus index, of the first edition of Hawaii's last constitution as a sovereign country, containing 103 numbered articles. When in 1893 Queen Liliuokalani of Hawaii was overthrown, she was replaced by a provisional government consisting of members of the American Committee of Safety, striving to achieve annexation of Hawaii to the United States of America. When annexation was not forthcoming they set up a constitutional convention and adopted the present constitution for the Republic of Hawaii. The annexation was finally ratified four years later, the transfer of sovereignty taking place in August 1898. "The present constitution is among the more important pieces of literature pertinent to these times" (Streeter).Forbes notes that page 56 is unnumbered and blank ("[56] blank"), but in this copy it is numbered and contains the last names of the members of the constitutional convention. The present copy includes the 6-page index, often lacking. With a library stamp on front wrapper, the spine of the wrapper reinforced. A very good copy.

        Roderick Haig-Brown's Steelhead Bee. {A Fly with a Story}.

      - Roderick Haig-Brown's Steelhead Bee - a fly designed by Haig-Brown to catch summer steelhead. In the summer of 1993, I traveled to Campbell River, British Columbia and Roderick Haig-Brown's home. It was my first research trip for my bibliography about Haig-Brown's books, published in 2000. I didn't do much preplanning for the trip and thought I could flatter and charm my way to Haig-Brown's books once I arrived at his home. I knocked on Haig-Brown's front door and was met by a nice woman; I introduced myself, pleaded my case, and asked permission to look at Haig-Brown's library. I was politely told no. Haig-Brown House at that time was under the guidance of a caretaker and not open to the public. However, the woman said she would consult with Haig-Brown's upriver neighbor, Van Egan, to see if my story had merit and to come back later in the day. I met Van on the steps of the house at the appointed time and he graciously allowed me access to the library and the books. That was the beginning of several visits to Haig-Brown House and of more importance, a lasting friendship with Van. One afternoon I was visiting with Van and his wife, Maxine, when she asked if I fly fished - sure do, I said. She held a fly box in her hand which contained 5 or 6 Steelhead Bees and asked me to select one. I did, and then Van told me the story of the fly. It was dressed by Harry Darbee, the well-known Catskill fly fisher and fly tier. In the late 1960s Mr. Darbee sent Haig-Brown several flies, including Rat-faced McDougall's and Irresistible's - 'Those big dry flies you gave me with clipped-hair bodies are terrific,' Haig-Brown wrote to Harry Darbee. That brief letter was published in Darbee's book 'Catskill Flytier.' Included with the flies described were these 5 or 6 Steelhead Bees. Haig-Brown didn't like them. Roderick told Van that the squirrel-tail wings on the Darbee Bees were set slanting too far forward, thus restricting how the fly would fish on the surface. Rather than attempt to fish the Darbee flies, Haig-Brown gave them to Van. That's the story of this Steelhead Bee. The fly is mounted on a typed and holograph letter from Van addressed to me and signed by Van. The letter and fly mounted in an oak shadow box with matt and glass, measuring 14 3/4 x 11 3/4. A longer winded version of this story was typed by me some 21 years ago and affixed to the back of the shadow box. In fine condition.

Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes

New York: Theatre Communications Group, 1993. First editions of the author's Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Octavo, 2 volumes, original cloth. Each are fine in fine dust jackets. Each volume is signed by Tony Kushner on the title page. Tony Kushner's most famous work, a self-described "gay fantasia" describes an angel crashing to earth to summon a gay man dying from AIDS from his sick bed as a kind of prophet. The story takes place in the mid 1980's, when young gay men were expected to tend to the ill among them, while simultaneously facing their own mortality. "I struggle with the question of whether there is or there isn't anything beyond this material world, and I've never found an answer that feels in any way definitive. I can't leave the question alone either." It was made into an Emmy Award-winning HBO film directed by Mike Nichols. This two-part epic, subtitled "A Gay Fantasia on National Themes," has received hundreds of performances worldwide in more than twenty-six languages.
