Defensive Book, Riddle Book, Ghost Book

N.p.: Skeptical Press, 1993, 1993, 1992. Three small octavo volumes. (7); (4); (10)ff. Each volume is one of fifteen copies. A collection of unusual artist’s books. Defensive Book is an expression of paranoia and fear, underscoring its point by ending with the repeated words “Don’t trust anybody.” The book bristles with pins embedded between the pages. Each page becomes progressively smaller in size, and as a result the pins become increasingly more exposed and extend from the edges of the pages. Adding to the ominous tone, rust spots from the pins have bled through the paper. In Riddle Book, intaglio prints are suspended within windows in each page, and are accompanied by cryptic text. Ghost Book is printed in faint gray ink on delicate, transparent leaves of a kozo-sulphite paper called “silk tissue.” The medium is suited to the book’s nebulous subject matter, memory, as the narrator recalls the final days and death of her grandmother. An extremely fine set, housed together in a cloth-covered slipcase.

Language and Thought. Anshen Transdisciplinary Lectureships in Art, Science and the Philosophy of Culture. Monograph Three.

Moyer Bell,, Wakefield and others, 1993 - First Edition. Wakefield and others, Moyer Bell, 1993. 23.6cm x 15.7cm. 96 pages. Original hardcover in original dustjacket. In protective Mylar. Excellent condition with only minor signs of wear. The Frick Collection. As a linguist, Chomsky aims not only at making a technical contribution with his generative theory of language but also at integrating his linguistic theory into a wider view of the relationship between language and the human mind. The crux of this view is his hypothesis that human beings are born with an innate knowledge of universal principles underlying the structure of human language. His ideas have exerted a powerful influence on other disciplines by restoring language to a central position in cognitive psychology and in the philosophy of the mind. The wider impact of his redefinition of the subject gives him a permanent place in the intellectual history of the twentieth century. Central to Chomsky's analysis is the distinction he draws between linguistic competence (knowledge of the system of rules that govern language) and an individual's actual performance as a user of language. A Dr. Klor de Alva points out, "Chomsky's sober text makes clear why an avoidance of dogmatism and reductionism, in the human and natural sciences - as in all things- and a well-founded recognition of the limits of cognition are not only methodologically useful but also conceptually necessary." Sprache: English Excellent condition with only minor signs of wear. Original hardcover in original dustjacket. In protective Mylar. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Quiller Meridian

London -Headline, 1993 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The scarce first English edition of 'Elleston Trevor's Cold War thriller, seventeenth in the Quiller series. With illustrated dustwrapper designed by David Bull. The Quiller series focuses on a solitary, highly capable spy (named for Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch) who works (generally alone) for a government bureau that doesn't exist and narrates his own adventures. Quiller (not his real name) occupies a literary middle ground between James Bond and John le Carr. He is a skilled driver, pilot, diver, and linguist, but does not carry a gun. Quiller narrates his adventures in first person, addressing the reader in an informal tone. The series is very stylized, featuring intense depictions of spy tradecraft and professional relationships, surprising jump cuts between chapters, and deep, sometimes self-pitying interior monologues. The first of the Quiller novels, The Berlin Memorandum (1965) (retitled The Quiller Memorandum in the US) won an Edgar Award, from the Mystery Writers of America, for Best Novel. Elleston Trevor (17 February 1920 21 July 1995) was a British novelist who wrote under several pseudonyms. Trevor worked in many genres, but is principally remembered for his 1964 adventure story The Flight of the Phoenix, written as Elleston Trevor, and for a series of Cold War thrillers featuring the British secret agent Quiller, written under the pseudonym Adam Hall. Condition: In a black cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine, in original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, dustwrapper is very good and soundwith just some shelfwear, a closed tear and slight chipping. The book is excellent with minimal shelfwear, just one or two slight marks. Internally, firmly bound, bright and clean throughout. Slight bumping to bottom edge of textblock. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED with a VERY GOOD INDEED dustwrapper..

ABRAHAM BLOEMAERT AND HIS SONS. Paintings and Prints

Aetas Aurea, Vol. XI . Cloth bound with dusjacket, as new !! 1993. 2 vols. in 4to. VIII, 710 pp. text and over 1250 ills. on 439 plts. (35 in color).Biography by Marten Jan Bok. This is the first monograph on the leading Utrecht painter Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651) and his four sons who were painters and engravers. Bloemaert emerges as the foremost master of Utrecht, his stature comparable to that of his contemporaries Hendrick Goltzius and Cornelis van Haarlem. The output of Abraham Bloemaert is considerable: over 200 extant paintings and 625 prints designed by him and engraved by such masters as Matham, Saenredam, Bolswert and Cornelis and Frederick Bloemaert. His stylistic development during an activity of sixty years leads from mannerist works in the style of Spranger and the school of Haarlem to a realist approach, a Caravaggesque interlude, a stint at court art, and a final classicizing style. He treated a multitude of themes from the Old and New Testament, altarpieces, mythological works, landscapes, and genre pieces, with important contributions in each field. A fervent Catholic with Jesuit ties, he is the chief representative of Dutch Catholic art. Connected with his lifelong teaching activity are the 166 prints of the Tekenboek. The book opens with an introductory text which sums up the art of Abraham and places it into the context of his time. The bulk of the book is the catalogue which includes in chronological sequence all the extant and the firmly documented lost paintings by Abraham, with copies and imitations, and all the original engravings designed by him. They comprise the 380 engravings by Frederick and the 60 engravings by Cornelis Bloemaert designed by their father. Separately catalogued are 30 dated drawings which provide support for undated works, and 35 comparative works by other masters. This is followed by a complete study of the fine œuvre of Hendrick Bloemaert, the closest continuator of Abraham, hitherto largely neglected: 120 extant paintings of genre scenes, religious themes, portraits, and mythologies. Finally a study of Adriaen Bloemaert. A large proportion of the works of Abraham and his sons are here studied and reproduced for the first time. The book closes with a fully documented biography of Abraham Bloemaert and his sons and a list of pupils; this portion is the work of the Utrecht historian Marten Jan Bok.

Ornette Coleman: A Harmolodic Life SIGNED By Ornette Coleman

Morrow, New York 1993 - SIGNED in black ink at the half title page by Ornette Coleman. The ticket for the concert at which the signature was obtained is laid in, dated Wed. Sept. 26, 2007 for a performance at Royce Hall, UCLA , as part of the university's Alive! Concert Series; also laid is a 4" by 6" coloured photograph of Ornette taken at the signing. In quarter bound blue cloth with black paper boards, hint of spotting to top edge, else fine, in a like dust jacket, unclipped, now in a mylar sleeve. For more than fifty years, Ornette Coleman (born 1930), has astonished, delighted and infuriated his audiences in creating some of the most daring and innovative music of our time. He is now rightly considered, with Armstrong and Parker, one of the great "architects" of jazz who has radically changed the way we listen to it. Still flourishing in his eighties, Coleman has only recently received some of the honours due him, among them, in 2007, a Pulitzer Prize for his recording Sound Grammar and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. This is the first comprehensive biography of the great saxophonist and composer by free jazz critic and scholar, Litweiler, who is also the author of The Freedom Principal: Jazz After 1958. The book is a vivid portrait of Coleman's brilliant and controversial career in its many incarnations, which makes extensive use of unpublished interviews, detailed and insightful musical analysis and includes a comprehensive discography. Given his reputedly retiring and reticent nature and advanced age, Coleman autographs are increasingly uncommon and book signatures, very scarce. An uncommon jazz collectible in fine condition. The Underground Railroad: Vermont and the Fugitive Slave

Worcester, VT: Dragon Dance Theatre, 1993. Folio. (15)ff. From an edition of fifty copies, this copy is out-of-series. Illustrated with fifteen woodcuts, printed in black & white, by the Montreal-based artist Sam Kerson. The woodcuts depict scenes related to Vermont's involvement in the Underground Railroad. Vermont has a long history of opposition to slavery: the state was the first to abolish slavery, and its citizens were very active in assisting fugitive slaves. This book was published to commemorate the opening of a mural that Kerson painted at the Vermont Law School, which, Kerson writes, "celebrates the efforts of black and white Americans in Vermont and throughout the United States to achieve freedom and justice." Kerson is a muralist, engraver, and the artistic director of the Dragon Dance Theatre, which focuses on puppetry and performance art with a social conscience. Stab-bound in black wrappers, with a black cloth chemise that ties around the book with blue ribbons and bears an additional woodcut on the front cover. Very fine.

        The Parthenon Pediments

New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Co.. 1993. Portfolio of etchings, one of 25 copies, each signed and numbered by the artist Judith Turner on the reverse, all on BFK Rives paper and paper from Paul Wong, Dieu Donne Papermill. Page size: 30 inches by 15 inches; 6 leaves. Bound: loose in green paper portfolio with the title in silver gilt on front panel by BookLab. The titlepage printing was letterpress by Daniel Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress with calligraphy by Jerry Kelly. Marjorie Van Dyke and Vincent FitzGerald accomplished the printing of the etchings. Twenty-four photographic images by noted architectural photographer Judith Turner were selected by the artist and laid out in horizontally on five rectangular sheets of paper. They were photoetched and produced images with softer lines than photogravure. The artist has noted that this process helps conceal the deterioration of the sculptures. The etchings were printed with black ink and then using chine colle color was added by adhering thin sheets of colored tissue paper onto the heavier, larger sheets of paper. The effect is totally original and beautiful. The images float along the sheet of paper with the color calling attention to different aspects of these monumental pieces that are so essential to Western art.
See an Image.
