Rome, Aloysius Zannettus, 1604. 8vo. With woodcut title-page and some ornamented woodcut initials in the text. Contemporary richly gold-tooled brown morocco, with gauffered edges; both sided with 2 pairs of fillets along the edges with little flowers at the corners and a floral border in between; a pattern of loose gilt stamps of flowers in a spiral line, vases with flowers, lions, stars and so-called 'foglia accartocciata' ('feuilles mortes') and a crucifixion in an oval border in the centre of the front cover and the Virgin with child in an oval border in the centre of the back cover.

CRRA (1 copy); not in BMC STC Italian; KVK; WorldCat; for the binding: Legatura romana barocca 9; G. Vianini Tolomei, ''Reliures romaines d'archives des XVe et XVIe siècles'', in: Bulletin du bibliophile, 1993, nr. 2, pl. VI. Second located copy of probably the first edition of this collection of prayers to be said before and after Mass. Later editions were published in 1609 and 1621. The magnificent baroque binding is of Roman design and can be attributed to the Soresini atelier. It is executed in the finest style of this famous family of bookbinders connected with the papal court. Founded in 1570, the bindery of Francesco Soresini and his son Prospero began to flourish after the death of Nicolo Franzese and their work is mainly related to the pontificate of Clement VIII (1592-1604). One of the most striking characteristics of the Soresini atelier is a flower within a spiral line, an important contribution to the new baroque 'fanfare style', which the family helped to perfect. This example has, on both covers, ten different stamps with these spirals ending in a fleuron, forming an harmonious decorative pattern in which more traditional stamps also appear. Some insignificant browning and spotting throughout. Good copy in a splendid fanfare binding.

With echoes of Brave New World, in this 1994 Newbery Medal winner, Lowry examines the idea that people might freely choose to give up their humanity in order to create a more stable society. Gradually Jonas learns just how costly this ordered and pain-free society can be, and boldly decides he cannot pay the price. "A powerful and provacative novel" (The New York Times). Orig. [Hardcover / fest gebunden].. "The publication of this Concordance to the Syriac New Testament (Peshitta) is a landmark in Syriac scholarship. It fills a lacuna in the field which has long been felt by Syriac scholars. George Kiraz's new computer-generated Concordance (in vocalized serto script) is based on the standard British and Foreign Bible Society's edition of 1920, and will at once take its place as an essential reference tool for New Testament and for Syriac studies. Notably, it marks a very successful union of Syriac scholarship with the 'Electronic Age', specifically the field of Linguistic Computing, since the author has academic qualifications in both computer engineering and Syriac studies. Finally, it witnesses the very welcome alliance of Syrian Orthodox and Western academic scholarship. It is designed to be of service not only to western scholars and students, but also to clergy and laity of the Syriac churches, for whom the Peshitta is their 'Authorized Version.'"         Before the Dawn: Turn of the Century (aka Luna Rossa) (Portfolio of 10 Signed Silver Gelatin Prints)

Tokyo: Weston Gallery , 1993. Limited Edition . No Binding. Fine. This portfolio, also known as Luna Rossa, was published in 1993 on the occasion of Eikoh Hosoe\'s 60th birthday and in connection with the exhibition titled, \'Eikoh Hosoe\'s New York -- Before the Dawn: Toward the Turn of the New Century\', held at the I.C.A.C. Weston Gallery in Shinjuku, Tokyo in March 1993. Eikoh Hosoe worked on this series of nudes in the summers of 1990-96 while teaching photography workshops in the U.S. The theme of his workshops was \'Nudes and the Natural Environment\' and his students participated in the making of these images by being his subjects. In Luna Rossa (Red Moon, a metaphor for the darkroom\'s red light bulb), all the photos were solarized in the darkroom. Actually, three darkroom techniques were employed: Solarization (in the style of Man Ray\'s Rayograph), photograms (in the style of Moholy Nagy), and photo sketching (in the style of Japanese photographer Ei-Q). Although solarization is the dominant technique, you sometimes see a small part of the photograph that looks normal. It was created by using an object (as for a photogram) to cover an area during the solarization process. The resulting whitish area in the photograph is a very nice contrast with the surrounding darkish, solarization effect. (For example, in the listing photograph, the sunflower was covered from solarization and looks normal. The sunflower is being held by a person standing behind the woman in front.) The artful photographs are the result of a lot of delicate darkroom work. It makes Hosoe an artist behind the camera as well as under the darkroom light. Photoeye in their review of Luna Rossa wrote, \"Hosoe\'s subjects for this series seem to be clothes-shedding naturalists from Woodstock, Snowmass, and Anchorage. With a decidedly hippy/new-age feel to the work (with titles like Sunflower Song and Moonlight), Hosoe has employed a variety of darkroom techniques, such as solarizing and masking, to produce work that is at once romantic and futuristic.\" The portfolio consists of 10 original solarized gelatin silver prints mounted to larger sheets of cream card with each signed in Kanji and numbered 9 of 20 by Eikoh Hosoe in pencil below the image. The images measure approximately 9.125 x 7.75 inches (or reverse) and are loose as issued in the original publisher\'s wooden drawer, brass corner fittings, drawer pulls and label plaque. From the edition limited to 20 copies, only 10 were issued as a portfolio with this being number 9. The remaining 10 were sold as individual prints. The 10 photographs in the portfolio are: Lady from Ukiyo-e, Woodstock, New York - Moonlight, Woodstock, New York - Butoh Dance in the Dawn, Snowmass, Colorado - Shadow of a Bodhi Tree, Snowmass, Colorado - Morning Eclipse of the Sun, Woodstock, New York - Witness of the End of the Twentieth Century, Anchorage, Alaska - Before Awakening, Woodstock, New York -Sunflower Song, Snowmass, Colorado - Great White River, Anchorage, Alaska - Black Waterlilies, Woodstock, New York. The photographs are in FINE condition. The Paulownia wood portfolio box is in FINE- condition with a few scratches to the top of the box. Included with the portfolio is a first edition of Luna Rossa that has been signed by Eikoh Hosoe. The book contains 9 of the 10 images included in the portfolio.

Flashpoints: Selected Images of Gilles Peress (Portfolio of 11 Signed Silver Gelatin Prints)

1997: Double Elephant Editions, 1993. 1st Edition . No Binding. Fine. This is a portfolio of 12 signed silver prints of some of the most famous photographs of Gilles Peress entitled Flashpoints: Selected Images of Gilles Peress produced by Double Elephant Editions, New York in 1997. The portfolio has received critical acclaim and has been displayed in numerous exhibitions over the past decade and features photographs from Telex Iran, The Silence and Farewell to Bosnia as well as his most famous photograph, Bloody Sunday, Derry. Commenting on the New York exhibition, famed art critic Jung Joon Lee stated, From Rwanda to Bosnia and Tehran to Belfast, Peress\'s signature Magnum photographs show dramatic moments of disaster. Three photographs depict the conflicts in Northern Ireland during the 1970s and early 1980s. In Peress\'s photograph Bottom of William Street One Minute before the British First Parachute Regiment Opened Fire, Killing Thirteen Civilians--an Event Known as Bloody Sunday, Derry, Ireland, 1972, one sees the very moment before tragedy strikes. Frozen in time, we see the panic of the crowd, the heavily armored soldiers among them, and the devastated children. The heightened tension he is able to capture in these dramatic moments conjures up terror, one of the effects of the sublime. The sublime gives beauty to the moment of atrocity and makes the horror digestible for the viewer. In the exhibition\'s press release, Peress says, I\'m gathering evidence for history, so that we remember. The carefully composed narratives in Peress\'s photographs do indeed echo his statement by taking on a didactic nature. In presenting us with images of collective suffering, his photographs give us a lesson on humanity\'s past mistakes. The photographs measure approximately 13 x 19 inches and are individually matted with Peress\' signature, title and date, in pencil, on the verso and housed in a silver-stamped black clamshell case that also contains a printed title and plate list. Both the clamshell case and photographs are in FINE condition.

        Kammavaca

19th century], [Burma - Unbound between a pair of wooden coverboards, lacquered in red and with gilt decoration on outer surfaces, covers and text leaves with a single hole for tying (tie lacking), all contained within a protective cover roll (or 'sapa-lwe') of bamboo strips, red, green and blue cloth, interwoven by variously coloured threads, the roll secured by a long woven binding ribbon or 'sa-si-gyo.' All within a modern cloth box. The Kammavaca is a Pali term describing verses from the Tipitaka that relate to rituals of monastic life and ordination. It is considered to be one of the most sacred of Burmese religious texts often commissioned by lay-people as works of merit when a son entered a Buddhist monastery. " Kammavaca are volumes of one, five, or nine extracts from the Theravadin Vinaya , each relating to specific ceremonies associated with monks. Noel F. Singer writes that the earliest kammavaca consisted of folios made of plain palm leaves, each of which had four lines of square-inked script on a gold or silver background." ("Kammavaca Texts: Their Covers and Binding Ribbons," Arts of Asia , 23, May-June 1993) "In the 17th century, folios began to be made of pieces of cloth coated with lacquer and painted with cinnabar, and the square letters were written in thick, black lacquer. On rare occasions, folios were of ivory. Designs in gilt, which had been reserved for the ends of folios, end papers, and wooden coverboards, now began to appear between the lines of text. By the end of the 19th century, the lines of script on the folio increased to six or seven and sheets of brass or copper were introduced as folios." (John Falconer, and others, Myanmar Style Art, Architecture and Design of Burma , Hong Kong, 1998, p. 177). 16 leaves (5 1/8 x 22 inches), each lacquered in red with elaborate overall decoration in gilt, 14 leaves with lines of black lacquer text in square text (known as 'magyi-zi') recto and verso, two leaves with text on one side only.

ABRAHAM BLOEMAERT AND HIS SONS. Paintings and Prints.

Aetas Aurea, Vol. XI . Cloth bound with dusjacket, as new !! 1993. 2 vols. in 4to. VIII, 710 pp. text and over 1250 ills. on 439 plts. (35 in color).Biography by Marten Jan Bok. This is the first monograph on the leading Utrecht painter Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651) and his four sons who were painters and engravers. Bloemaert emerges as the foremost master of Utrecht, his stature comparable to that of his contemporaries Hendrick Goltzius and Cornelis van Haarlem. The output of Abraham Bloemaert is considerable: over 200 extant paintings and 625 prints designed by him and engraved by such masters as Matham, Saenredam, Bolswert and Cornelis and Frederick Bloemaert. His stylistic development during an activity of sixty years leads from mannerist works in the style of Spranger and the school of Haarlem to a realist approach, a Caravaggesque interlude, a stint at court art, and a final classicizing style. He treated a multitude of themes from the Old and New Testament, altarpieces, mythological works, landscapes, and genre pieces, with important contributions in each field. A fervent Catholic with Jesuit ties, he is the chief representative of Dutch Catholic art. Connected with his lifelong teaching activity are the 166 prints of the Tekenboek. The book opens with an introductory text which sums up the art of Abraham and places it into the context of his time. The bulk of the book is the catalogue which includes in chronological sequence all the extant and the firmly documented lost paintings by Abraham, with copies and imitations, and all the original engravings designed by him. They comprise the 380 engravings by Frederick and the 60 engravings by Cornelis Bloemaert designed by their father. Separately catalogued are 30 dated drawings which provide support for undated works, and 35 comparative works by other masters. This is followed by a complete study of the fine œuvre of Hendrick Bloemaert, the closest continuator of Abraham, hitherto largely neglected: 120 extant paintings of genre scenes, religious themes, portraits, and mythologies. Finally a study of Adriaen Bloemaert. A large proportion of the works of Abraham and his sons are here studied and reproduced for the first time. The book closes with a fully documented biography of Abraham Bloemaert and his sons and a list of pupils; this portion is the work of the Utrecht historian Marten Jan Bok.
