Descripcion, Historia y Exposicion del Codice Barbonico (Edicion Facsimilar)

Mexico, Siglo Veintiumo Editores, 1993 2 volumes; xlviii+498 pages; accordion fold out pictorial of the codex. Text octavo (8 3/4" x 5 3/4"), codex folio held in a (16" x 16") slipcase. Commentary by E T Hamy. Limited to 1000 copies. Reprint first published in 1898. Borbonicus, Codex. Codex du Corps Legislatif. Codex Legislatif. Codex Hamy. Calendario de Paris. Bibliotheque de I Assemblee National Fracaise, Paris. Published. Ritual-calenderical. Mexico City - Tenochititlan, D F. Preconquest or early 16th Century. Native paper screenfold painted on one side. 36 leaves. The manuscript was first described by Waddilove when it was in the Escorial in Spain and before its pages 1 - 2 and 39 - 40 were lost. It was purchased by the library of the French Chamber of Deputies in 1826. Kingsborough (1831-48) reported its presence in Paris but was apparently refused permission to published it (Anonymous, 1829). The date of this major and early calendrical source is controversial. Caso has argued for a preconquest dating whereas D Robertson has argued for an early colonial date, possibly before 1541. The manuscript has four major sections. Part 1 (pages 3-20) is a tonalpohualli or 260 day divinatory almanac. The first and second of the 20 periods, presumably depicted on the missing pages 1 and 2, are lacking. The presiding deities and other symbols of each period are shown in a main panel on each page. The day signs, the 13 Lords of the Day, the 9 Lords of the Night, and the 13 birds are drawn in compartments below and to the right of each main panel. The pictorial detail is greater than that in any other central Mexican tonalamatl or than those in the Borgia Group manuscripts. As in other parts of the document there are later Spanish glosses. Part 2 (pages 21-22) shows the association of the 9 Lords of the Night with the year bearer days for a 52 year period. Part 3 (pages 23-36) is an 18 month festival calendar for a New Fire ceremony year. Part 4 (pages 37-38 and the missing page 39-40) repeats one of the month ceremonies and continues with dates for a 52 year period. Hamy (1899) gives descriptive commentary and color lithograph facsimile. A photographic edition of part 2 only was issued by Vaillant (1940). Paso y Troncoso (1898) is a detailed by unillustrated commentary on the entire manuscript. The correlation of the Aztec and Christian calendars by Caso (1939) depends heavily on an analysis of part 3 of this manuscript. Part 2 has been the subject of a number of technical studies and is also teated in some of the other calendrical studies of the document. Chavero illustrated several details from the manuscript under the name Calendario de Paris, presumably from a copy by J F Ramirez in his collection. A single page was first reproduced by Leon de Rosny (1876) and a detail was reproduced by Lucien de Rosny (1877). Eleven of its pages are reproduced (nine in color) in Caso (1967). Copies An incomplete copy from the Ramirez and Chavero collections in in Museo Nacional de Anthropologia, Archivo Historico del INAH. Un unpublished commentary by Ramirez may also be in that collection. Full-size photographs were given limited distribution in the late 19th century. Examples of these are in New York Public LibraryMusee de l Homme, Paris and elsewhere but are not listed in the institutional check list. Condition A fine copy.. Hardcover. Fine.

[Manuscript]: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

New York: The Author. [1993]. First. Unbound manuscript pages. 491 leaves, typed on rectos only. The title page has a modest stain, otherwise the pages are fine. Housed in a worn paper box with a note "J.B.'s Book" on the back. Several small corrections (typos, spelling) in the text in an unknown hand. There are many significant differences between this manuscript and the final published version, including different chapter headings, rewritten passages, name changes (to protect the innocent and avoid lawsuits), exclusion of some anecdotes, and differing accounts of the same event. Inscribed by Berendt on the title page to the sister of his very close friend Bruce Kelly, a landscape architect who was responsible for designing many parts of New York's Central Park, most notably Strawberry Fields: "For Phyllis Kennedy -- With great affection. You read this manuscript before it turned into a book, and the main reason it DID become a book was the suggestions and encouragement of Bruce Kelly, your brother & my great good friend. All the best John Berendt. New York 12/13/99." In 1985 Berendt and Bruce Kelly co-edited, with others, Rebuilding Central Park: A Management and Restoration Plan. Reportedly, Kelly knew the Jim Williams story from his Georgia-resident sister, to whom this is inscribed, and suggested to Berendt that it would make an interesting story. Kelly died in 1993 at the age of 44, the year before Berendt's bestseller was published. Berendt wrote an essay about Kelly for the book Loss Within Loss, edited by Edmund White, which commemorated the lives of artists, writers, and other creative people who died of AIDS. The splendid nonfiction account of a celebrated crime in Savannah, Georgia, in which the author manages to capture the feel and character of the city and its residents. The basis for the 1997 Clint Eastwood-directed film with John Cusack, Kevin Spacey, and Jude Law. .

        Kammavaca

19th century], [Burma - Unbound as issued between a pair of red lacquered teak boards, gilt decoration on outer surfaces, inlaid with glass mosaic decoration, Housed within a modern dark red morocco-backed box. A fine 19th-century Burmese Kammavaca. The Kammavaca is a Pali term describing verses from the Tipitaka that relate to rituals of monastic life and ordination. It is considered to be one of the most sacred of Burmese religious texts often commissioned by lay-people as works of merit when a son entered a Buddhist monastery. "Kammavaca are volumes of one, five, or nine extracts from the Theravadin Vinaya, each relating to specific ceremonies associated with monks. Noel F. Singer writes that the earliest kammavaca consisted of folios made of plain palm leaves, each of which had four lines of square-inked script on a gold or silver background." ("Kammavaca Texts: Their Covers and Binding Ribbons," Arts of Asia, 23, May-June 1993). "In the 17th century, folios began to be made of pieces of cloth coated with lacquer and painted with cinnabar, and the square letters were written in thick, black lacquer. On rare occasions, folios were of ivory. Designs in gilt, which had been reserved for the ends of folios, end papers, and wooden coverboards, now began to appear between the lines of text. By the end of the 19th century, the lines of script on the folio increased to six or seven and sheets of brass or copper were introduced as folios" (John Falconer, and others, Myanmar Style Art, Architecture and Design of Burma, Hong Kong, 1998, p. 177). 16 leaves (5 x 22 3/16 inches), each lacquered in red with elaborate overall decoration in gilt, 14 leaves with lines of black/dark brown lacquer text in square script (known as 'magyi-zi) recto and verso, two leaves with text on one side only, the other with an overall decoration in gilt.         The Orchard Keeper (Signed & Inscribed Paperback Edition)

Vintage International, New York 1993 - This is an extremely scarce signed and inscribed paperback edition from the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winning McCarthy. It has been signed by the author directly to the half title page and inscribed: "For ___/From/Cormac". Laid in will be a signed letter of provenance from a friend of McCarthy in El Paso, Texas - to whom the book was inscribed. The book is in fine condition, but for a slight start of yellowing to the text block edges. Of course, signatures from the reclusive author are extremely difficult to come by, and inscriptions even more so. With provenance, an especially scarce copy thus. I ship all of my books bubble-wrapped in sturdy, very well-padded boxes, so they are guaranteed to arrive in the exact same condition as when they left. Please feel free to email with any questions/offers/trades and thank you for supporting small independent booksellers everywhere. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Beautifully illustrated by Jim Dine, this is the deluxe edition of author Neil Curry's colloquial version of the closing books of Homer's Odyssey in which he has "scrubbed the story free from all its side-tracks and digressions so as to leave clear one thread of Odysseus's final journey: from the shores of Ithaca to the marriage-bed where he is finally reunited with Penelope". The lithographic frontispiece and four photogravures bound into the book all reproduce drawings made by the artist in 1987-8 from Greek and Roman statuary at the Glyptotek in Munich, and were printed in London by Pauper's Press and Hope Sufferance Press.

[Attributes: Soft Cover]
