VISIONAIRE NO. 10: THE ALPHABET (WINTER 1993-1994)

(VISIONAIRE). Gan, Stephen, James Kaliardos & Cecilia Dean, Editors. VISIONAIRE NO. 10: THE ALPHABET (WINTER 1993-1994). New York: Visionaire Publishing, 1993. First Edition 1/1500. Folio. Loose Plates in a Portfolio. Fashion Quarterly. Near Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. Individual sheets laid into a die-cut printed portfolio, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Gregory Foley. Published in an edition of one thousand, five hundred copies, this is the ninth installment of everyone's favorite long-running luxe fashion quarterly, Visionaire. "Greg Foley, who had been collaborating with us on our cover designs since the day he graduated from Rhode Island School of Design, really went to town with this one. He sliced out every letter he fancied and created one gigantic collage that we then photographed and printed. The concept was exciting: The B from Harper's Bazaar and the V from Vogue could all appear on our cover, along with many other famous typefaces. In the end it even became a kind of guessing game: ''Name that logo.'' The only drawback was that for months after this cover was made, there was not a magazine, phone book, or cereal box in the house that didn't have a hole cut out of it. The holographic metallic foil stamping also made this one of our most memorable covers. As for the contents, we assigned each of the contributing artists a different letter of the alphabet. For the first time, the directions were very specific, but even so, many artists took the challenge and proceeded as if they had been given carte blanche". Its contributors include editor Stephen Gan, Nick Knight, Robert Medvedz, Dovanna Pagowska, Jeffrey Fulvimani, Tim Rollins + K.O.S., Ruben Toledo, Bill Cunningham, Steven Meisel, James Dignan, Steven Klein, James Vance, Kareem Iliya, Bruce Weber, Francois Berthoud, Robert Adams, Stevan Dohan, Michael Capotosto, Miguel Calvo, Florentino J. Pamintuan, Donna Trope, Lucy Ewing, Helmut Lang, Arnaldo, Ferrara Ocanto, Mei Tao, Malcolm Hill, Joshua Jordan, Manolo, James White, Alexis Rockman, Peter Robathan, Torkil Gudnason, Christophe Rihet, Juan Gatti, Josef Astor, John Martin Newsom, Victoria Bartlett, Bernard Figueroa, Filip Pagowski, Michael "Rags" Raglin, Susan Cianciolo, Andrew Gellaty, and Lori Kessel. A most handsome individually numbered example of this uncommon issue. Honolulu. "A Milody Denis Juin 1993". - A semi-glossy, yellow-surfaced, cardboard, envelope type folder measuring 10 ¼ inches x 14 ¼ inches. On the front is a mounted drawing on a plastic sheet, in outlines based on the Kama Sutra form of a male and a female figure, with titling in black in various types of lettering. With a Velcro closure on the back of the envelope/folder. Inside the folder is a black cloth-covered, oblong album style book with a design of the male-female symbols engraved into a rectangular section of rough-surfaced “polymerized sand” material, with the artist’s name and year: 93, this is mounted on the front cover, and the title: Kama Soutra in applied, black plastic lettering is at the top. A loose sheet of plastic foam protects the mounted sculptured panel. With a black cloth cord looped around the spine and with two loose, knotted ends. The album contains a clear plastic sheet with the titling and a design of dots in black, that overlays the initial drawing, which is printed in black on dark gray, textured paper, seventeen more coloring book type, outline drawings based on Kama Sutra positions follow. This copy is inscribed by Christine Kermaire on a blank page at the back of the folder: "Bien a' Vous". Christine Kermaire (b. 1953) is a Belgian artist who specializes in Artists’ Books, she uses various types of materials in her artistic constructions, but is especially known for working with plastics and applied synthetic materials. Her self-published: “Catalogue 2001 Artist’ Books Bookworks (Charleroi, Belgium), features this book at pp. [7], as the fourth item in the catalogue and as the second of her "Coloring Books for Adults". The edition is there mention as 200 numbered copies (This inscribed copy is not numbered). She gives a very detailed description (in French), of the substances & processes used in producing her really very special Artists’ Books. The cognoscenti speculate that only a small number of some of the proposed editions were actually completed which accounts for the scarcity of her books. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist. The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams. Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. The Alchemist is such a book. With over a million and a half copies sold around the world, The Alchemist has already established itself as a modern classic, universally admired. Paul Zindel said of its protagonist, "A boy named Santiago joins the ranks of Candide and Pinocchio.

(Brief v. 2. I. 1992). ABRAHAM BLOEMAERT AND HIS SONS. Paintings and Prints.

Aetas Aurea, Vol. XI - Cloth bound with dusjacket, as new !! 1993. 2 vols. in 4to. VIII, 710 pp. text and over 1250 ills. on 439 plts. (35 in color).Biography by Marten Jan Bok. This is the first monograph on the leading Utrecht painter Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651) and his four sons who were painters and engravers. Bloemaert emerges as the foremost master of Utrecht, his stature comparable to that of his contemporaries Hendrick Goltzius and Cornelis van Haarlem. The output of Abraham Bloemaert is considerable: over 200 extant paintings and 625 prints designed by him and engraved by such masters as Matham, Saenredam, Bolswert and Cornelis and Frederick Bloemaert. His stylistic development during an activity of sixty years leads from mannerist works in the style of Spranger and the school of Haarlem to a realist approach, a Caravaggesque interlude, a stint at court art, and a final classicizing style. He treated a multitude of themes from the Old and New Testament, altarpieces, mythological works, landscapes, and genre pieces, with important contributions in each field. A fervent Catholic with Jesuit ties, he is the chief representative of Dutch Catholic art. Connected with his lifelong teaching activity are the 166 prints of the Tekenboek. The book opens with an introductory text which sums up the art of Abraham and places it into the context of his time. The bulk of the book is the catalogue which includes in chronological sequence all the extant and the firmly documented lost paintings by Abraham, with copies and imitations, and all the original engravings designed by him. They comprise the 380 engravings by Frederick and the 60 engravings by Cornelis Bloemaert designed by their father. Separately catalogued are 30 dated drawings which provide support for undated works, and 35 comparative works by other masters. This is followed by a complete study of the fine œuvre of Hendrick Bloemaert, the closest continuator of Abraham, hitherto largely neglected: 120 extant paintings of genre scenes, religious themes, portraits, and mythologies. Finally a study of Adriaen Bloemaert. A large proportion of the works of Abraham and his sons are here studied and reproduced for the first time. The book closes with a fully documented biography of Abraham Bloemaert and his sons and a list of pupils; this portion is the work of the Utrecht historian Marten Jan Bok. 777 g. Wise Words about Letter Writing

Baltimore: Xavier Press, 1993. 19pp. A timeless essay by Lewis Carroll on the art of correspondence, illustrated with two pasted-in postage stamps promoting letter-writing and a fold-out sample of a letter by the author. In a striking designer binding by Dominic Riley featuring gilt-tooled envelopes and abstracted stamps in onlays of yellow, green, and plum on black morocco. These panels were inlaid into overlapping strips of dark brown goatskin, and the title is tooled in gilt down the spine. The design is segmented into panels that are slightly offset from each other, introducing tension and movement into the design. Between the panels are columns of gilt dots, and the dots are repeated inside the covers on bright green morocco doublures. Violet suede flyleaves and jewel-toned endpapers complete the production. The edges are painted with blue, green, yellow, and violet acrylic, which was then burnished and waxed for a smooth finish. Housed in a black clamshell cloth box lined with vibrant turquoise suede. Riley studied with Paul Delrue and at the London College of Printing before starting his own bookbinding studio in 1994. He co-founded the bookbinding program at the San Francisco Center for the Book in 1996, and returns there annually to teach and lecture. Elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2008, Riley's bindings can be found in many institutional and private collections in the United States and United Kingdom, including the British Library. Extremely fine. (2 5/8 by 2 1/8; 66x52mm).

St. Louis Riverfront after the Great Fire, 1849 (Mississippi Panorama)

      - Watercolor and ink drawing on paper: 5 x 31 5/8". Signed lower right, inscribed "Locust St." lower margin. Inventory#: 1993. This superb, highly accurate and beautiful watercolor by French artist Edouard Lemasson captures St. Louis just after one of the darker moments in its history: the great fire of 1849. On the evening of May 17 of that year, the steamer White Cloud, moored at the foot of Cherry Street, caught fire. The steamboat broke loose from its moorings and began to float down the Mississippi River, setting other steamboats on fire as it went. It finally came to rest at the foot of Locust Street, where the heat emanating from the boat ignited nearby buildings. The resulting fire began to spread and threatened to burn down the entire city. The fire department, however, avoided further calamity by blowing up six warehouses to create a fire break. By the time the fire had run its course, however, casualties included 430 houses, twenty-three steamers, nine flatboats and barges, the Republican, Reveille and Evening Gazette printing offices, the post office and three banking houses. The burned district was mainly the old French portion of the city with its narrow streets and antiquated buildings, which in the space of two years was entirely reconstructed. Lemasson's splendid watercolor shows the city panoramically from the river in a format known as "profile view". A lone surviving steamboat can be glimpsed at far right. Just below it the artist has written "Locust Street," which was the spot where the White Cloud ended its fiery, destructive journey downriver and ignited the adjacent buildings onshore. To the left the Old Court House dominates the skyline, its dome not yet complete with the high profile so familiar today. This is a watercolor of signal historical importance as a visual record of St. Louis after its great fire, and a work of delicate beauty. 0

HEAD AND FOOT BANDS. QUARTER BOUND IN FINE MOROCCO LEATHER AND HAND-MARBLED PAPER. ALL EDGES AND STAMPING IN 24 KT GILT. SLIPCASED. SIGNED AND NUMBERED. COPIES PRINTED: 300 PUBLICATION DATE: 1993 This copy signed by Schookler and inscribed by Ingrid Sils (The Photographer)The book is virtually mint condition. The linen covered slipcase has minor shelf wear, and has protected the book well. This was the first book produced by The Complete Sportsman. It was printed as a Limited edition of 300 copies, plus 28 Deluxe edition copies that contained one of the salmon flies from the book. All Deluxe editions were sold prior to publication. This is the standard limited edition. Preface written by Paul Schmookler, introduction by David Zincavage, and photography by Ingrid Sils. All flies were tied by Paul Schmookler. Each photograph of Major Traherne's flies is accompanied by the original article, reproduced from The Fishing Gazette, Land and Water, or The Salmon Fly that describes the fly. John Traherne was probably the most aesthetically gifted salmon fly tyer of the nineteenth century. He was the heir to an estate which he inherited in 1859, but he served in the army, reaching the rank of Major, and retiring in 1865, but somehow finding time to be a Justice of the Peace, Deputy Lieutenant for his county and High Sheriff in 1863. He caught his first salmon in 1850, putting him at the front of the new fashion for taking these fish on a rod and line and afterward seems to have fished almost every river in the UK, as well as ranging widely in Ireland and Norway. A talented fisherman, the Major held the world record for many years with a cast of 45 yards and one inch and he caught 165 fish in fifteen days on the Namsen in 1864. Traherne contributed heavily to the Fishing Gazette in the 1870s, 80s and 90s and exhibited a case of flies at the Great International Fisheries Exhibition in London in 1883, the only amateur to do so apart from Kelson. It is quite likely that this is where the pair met and Kelson was so taken with Traherne's patterns that he began his series 'On the Description of Salmon Flies' in the Fishing Gazette in 1884 with eighteen of the Major's patterns. From the 'Emerald Gem,' a riot of green and blue macaw, with a filigree of golden pheasant topping as wing, to the 'Chatterer' (a pattern which I have always regarded as the definitive gaudy fly, since it requires at least fifty blue chatterer feathers to form its body,) Traherne's patterns were masterpieces. More than anything else, these flies are a celebration of the materials and artistry of the salmon fly and although they are no longer used, it remains a technical challenge for even the most accomplished fly dresser to tie them well. Traherne and his generation added the final touches to the fully dressed salmon fly - probably unaware of the enduring tradition they would leave when they were gone. Dr. Andrew N. Facsimile Manuscript report to Guatemalan Governor José Estachería

Testimonio Compañía Editorial, Madrid 1993 - 16 facsimile hand written pages with diagrams and three fold out diagrams of Palenque. Folio (12 1/2" x 8 1/2") bound in velum with black label and gilt lettering to cover. Testimonio's Tabula Americae. Limited to 980 copies of which this is 169. Spanish artillery Captain Antonio del Río’s (ca. 1745-ca. 1789) discovery of tangible evidence of an amazingly rich Maya past and this printed report were the beginning of the study of this truly lost civilization. In May 1786 upon the order of the Spanish Crown, Governor and Brigadier General of the Royal Audencia of Guatemala, Don José Estachería sent Río to Chiapas to investigate rumors of an ancient city near Santo Domingo del Palenque and determine the origin of its inhabitants. Rio was preceded by other visitors to Palenque, the most recent being two brief forays by José Antonio Calderón, a local official, and Spanish architect Antonio Bernasconi, whose sparse observations prompted the order for the full-scale investigation by Río. The Spanish captain made up for his lack of antiquarian training with his zeal, hiring seventy-nine Maya locals to assault with crowbars and axes the abandoned, tree-engulfed, seventh-century city of Palenque. In his report Río describes and comments on the hieroglyphs he saw. Río sent his manuscript report to Guatemalan Governor José Estachería, and it was preserved in Madrid. Almendáriz’s original drawings were recently found in a private European collection and published: Estampas de Palenque (not included here), Madrid: Testimonio, 1993. After the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the author’s manuscript and Waldeck’s drawings re-emerged in a still mysterious manner to be published in England. Publisher Henry Berthoud bought the manuscript from a mysterious Dr. McQuy (McQueen?) in Jamaica at the end of April 1822. Capitalizing on public interest in American indigenous cultures as well as in Romantic ruins, Berthoud published Rio’s work in hopes of a popular bestseller, which might otherwise have been lost. Condition: A Fine copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

This is a very beautiful book, with a strong color presence that comes as a shock upon opening the austere maple binding! The artists says, "Red is always life, bright yellow presence. Blue is water: oceans, sky and air. Silver illuminates; brown fashipns matter and greens pass beyond spring. Greys give us balance; the darks are mysteries, the tones variable; intensities reveal breath." See an Image. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Manuscript]: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

The Author, New York 1993 - Unbound manuscript pages. 491 leaves, typed on rectos only. The title page has a modest stain, otherwise the pages are fine. Housed in a worn paper box with a note "J.B.'s Book" on the back. Several small corrections (typos, spelling) in the text in an unknown hand. There are many significant differences between this manuscript and the final published version, including different chapter headings, rewritten passages, name changes (to protect the innocent and avoid lawsuits), exclusion of some anecdotes, and differing accounts of the same event. Inscribed by Berendt on the title page to the sister of his very close friend Bruce Kelly, a landscape architect who was responsible for designing many parts of New York's Central Park, most notably Strawberry Fields: "For Phyllis Kennedy -- With great affection. You read this manuscript before it turned into a book, and the main reason it DID become a book was the suggestions and encouragement of Bruce Kelly, your brother & my great good friend. All the best John Berendt. New York 12/13/99." In 1985 Berendt and Bruce Kelly co-edited, with others, *Rebuilding Central Park: A Management and Restoration Plan*. Reportedly, Kelly knew the Jim Williams story from his Georgia-resident sister, to whom this is inscribed, and suggested to Berendt that it would make an interesting story. Kelly died in 1993 at the age of 44, the year before Berendt's bestseller was published. Berendt wrote an essay about Kelly for the book *Loss Within Loss*, edited by Edmund White, which commemorated the lives of artists, writers, and other creative people who died of AIDS. The splendid nonfiction account of a celebrated crime in Savannah, Georgia, in which the author manages to capture the feel and character of the city and its residents. The basis for the 1997 Clint Eastwood-directed film with John Cusack, Kevin Spacey, and Jude Law. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

VISIONAIRE NO. 10: THE ALPHABET (WINTER 1993-1994)

Visionaire Publishing, New York 1993 - Individual sheets laid into a die-cut printed portfolio, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Band 11 und 12 mit Namenseintrag, sonst sehr guter Zustand. >>Selten angeboten!<< // OttoTaleus Eberhard BUURMAN, geb. 10.11.1890 Kirchborgum, gest. Archive of 30 letters from Ernst Mayr to Ernst Caspari (University of Rochester) and Arthur J. Cain (University of Liverpool)

Ernst Mayr 1980s-1990s. UNBOUND. 30 letters both ALS and TLS some 1 page, others 2 or more pages. from Ernst Mayr to Ernst Casperi (University of Rochester) and Arthur J. Cain (University of Liverpool). Cain mostly attached his answer, in photocopy, some serveral pages long. Some content: to Cain from Mayr: "thanking you for your reprints, particularly the analysis of Bauhin's Pinax. It is certainly important for the history of taxonomic methods to have a perceptive analysis of the forerunners of Linnaeus. Of course every time I deal with Linnaeus I am impressed how strongly his approach is dominated by the principles of logic" Letter dated 16 Dec. 1993 with enclosures: "As far as Maniola is concerned, the enclosed copy of my letter to Turner will tell you what is involved. In his presentation of the case Ford did not make nearly as careful an analysis as he should have and instead distinguished rather sweepingly a western and an eastern type. I am sure someone will make a more careful study in the near future. I am also enclosing a copy of the Gmelin speech as well as a draft copy of my paper on Scientific Revolutions......The amount of interesting papers being published these days is enormous. What pleases me is that they all support the Darwinian paradigm. No matter how much certain people try to claim otherwise, this is demonstrably true." another letter "This is why Mendel was so frustrated in his later work, when he tried to apply the rules of his pea crosses to species crosses "Aren't they all hybrids?". Letters dated in the 1990s. "Locke's species concept was rather similar to one defended by Mill and now usually referred to as his "nature kind" concept." To Ernst Casperi he writes: "When one compares the writings of contemporary embryologists and evolutionists of that period one realizes how completely different the conceptual framework of the two groups were. It is particularly clear whenever the embryologists criticize the thinking of the evolutionists. This is evident not only in the writings of Spemann but also from Boveri's famous speech when he was rector of Wurzburg University... I am planning to write this spring a paper with the title with the title of "Richard's Goldschmidt's Unanswered Questions. It is usually ignored that Goldschmidt in his 1940 book raises quite a few problems which the reductionists "beanbag" geneticists are quite unable to answer."
