Obsession: The Films of Jess Franco (First Edition)

Grauf Haufen and Frank Trebbin, Munich 1993 - First Edition. Never reprinted. An utterly obsessive, minutely detailed examination of Spanish exploitation director Jess Franco's illustrious career, divided into two sections: an extensive, photo-illustrated filmography that includes analysis and reproductions of even the most obscure country-of-origin posters and advertisement for each film, and a set of interviews by Franco's contemporaries (and Franco himself), including Howard Vernon, Jack Taylor, William Berger, and others. Profusely photoillustrated throughout, with great tribute paid to the director's rarely-clothed, and rarely-sane leading ladies. While firmly in the pit of the horror-exploitation tradition, Franco distinguished himself by way of his colorful themes, which included lesbian vampires, women in prison, surgical horror, zombies, nuns, sadomasochism, and even cannibalism. He also incorporated elements of giallo, crime fiction, science fiction, and comedy into his work. Thought of by many to be the European Ed Wood, he churned out a nearly impossible number of films, many under pseudonyms, using a devoted circle of exhibitionist leading ladies, actors, and technicians over several decades, always working on a shoestring budget. An indispensable resource for the Francophile. Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Collection of 25 Candid Photos of William S. Burroughs

1993. An archive of 25 candid color photos of William S. Burroughs taken on September 5, 1993. Each measuring 6" x 4". Fine. The photos include shots of Burroughs around his home in Lawrence, Kansas: by himself reading an art book, sprinkling food into an outdoor fish pond, and fiddling with a drum stick. There are also several group shots with Burroughs that include his business manager, James Grauerholz; poet and performance artist, John Giorno; and several other unidentified people. Giorno was a former companion of Andy Warhol and starred in his experimental 1965 film, Sleep. Giorno met Burroughs and Brion Gysin in the mid-1960s and was inspired by their cut-up and montage techniques. He later toured with Burroughs in the 1970s for a series of poetry readings and they remained lifelong friends. The stamp of his artist collective, "Giorno Poetry Systems," can be found on the verso of each photo. A pleasing collection of personal images of this legendary writer. .

Descripcion, Historia y Exposicion del Codice Barbonico (Edicion Facsimilar)

Mexico, Siglo Veintiumo Editores, 1993 2 volumes; xlviii+498 pages; accordion fold out pictorial of the codex. Text octavo (8 3/4" x 5 3/4"), codex folio held in a (16" x 16") slipcase. Commentary by E T Hamy. Limited to 1000 copies. Reprint first published in 1898. Borbonicus, Codex. Codex du Corps Legislatif. Codex Legislatif. Codex Hamy. Calendario de Paris. Bibliotheque de I Assemblee National Fracaise, Paris. Published. Ritual-calenderical. Mexico City - Tenochititlan, D F. Preconquest or early 16th Century. Native paper screenfold painted on one side. 36 leaves. The manuscript was first described by Waddilove when it was in the Escorial in Spain and before its pages 1 - 2 and 39 - 40 were lost. It was purchased by the library of the French Chamber of Deputies in 1826. Kingsborough (1831-48) reported its presence in Paris but was apparently refused permission to published it (Anonymous, 1829). The date of this major and early calendrical source is controversial. Caso has argued for a preconquest dating whereas D Robertson has argued for an early colonial date, possibly before 1541. The manuscript has four major sections. Part 1 (pages 3-20) is a tonalpohualli or 260 day divinatory almanac. The first and second of the 20 periods, presumably depicted on the missing pages 1 and 2, are lacking. The presiding deities and other symbols of each period are shown in a main panel on each page. The day signs, the 13 Lords of the Day, the 9 Lords of the Night, and the 13 birds are drawn in compartments below and to the right of each main panel. The pictorial detail is greater than that in any other central Mexican tonalamatl or than those in the Borgia Group manuscripts. As in other parts of the document there are later Spanish glosses. Part 2 (pages 21-22) shows the association of the 9 Lords of the Night with the year bearer days for a 52 year period. Part 3 (pages 23-36) is an 18 month festival calendar for a New Fire ceremony year. Part 4 (pages 37-38 and the missing page 39-40) repeats one of the month ceremonies and continues with dates for a 52 year period. Hamy (1899) gives descriptive commentary and color lithograph facsimile. A photographic edition of part 2 only was issued by Vaillant (1940). Paso y Troncoso (1898) is a detailed by unillustrated commentary on the entire manuscript. The correlation of the Aztec and Christian calendars by Caso (1939) depends heavily on an analysis of part 3 of this manuscript. Part 2 has been the subject of a number of technical studies and is also teated in some of the other calendrical studies of the document. Chavero illustrated several details from the manuscript under the name Calendario de Paris, presumably from a copy by J F Ramirez in his collection. A single page was first reproduced by Leon de Rosny (1876) and a detail was reproduced by Lucien de Rosny (1877). Eleven of its pages are reproduced (nine in color) in Caso (1967). Copies An incomplete copy from the Ramirez and Chavero collections in in Museo Nacional de Anthropologia, Archivo Historico del INAH. Un unpublished commentary by Ramirez may also be in that collection. Full-size photographs were given limited distribution in the late 19th century. Examples of these are in New York Public LibraryMusee de l Homme, Paris and elsewhere but are not listed in the institutional check list. Condition A fine copy.. Hardcover. Fine.

        Photographs

New York: Matthew Marks Gallery, 1993. First edition. Fine in a fine jacket. This copy signed on the title page by the artist. The first publication to feature Twombly's photographs, which eventually became a large part of his work and process. A lovely copy; Twombly's signature on trade editions of his publications is not wildly common.
