        Alice" Toy Theater

(England, c. 1930s). Thirty-three pieces, plus the theater and two backdrops. This remarkable handmade toy theater recreates some of the most iconic scenes from Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There. The set contains thirty-one figures or groups derived from John Tenniel's line drawings, including the White Rabbit, Alice's meeting with the Caterpillar, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, and the Red Queen and White Queen's examination of Alice after she becomes a queen. The figures are made from fine, thin birch plywood and set into corresponding stands. Another piece, the head of the Cheshire Cat, hangs from a small pin set in the arch of the theater's proscenium. The theater itself is also made of plywood, with decorative molding creating the proscenium arch, and is open at the top to allow for easy movement of the figures. It comes with two nested set pieces, the outer one with an opening cut in the middle showing the second set behind it. The former is painted to resemble the outside of a castle wall, complete with turrets extending downward and quatrefoil windows. The latter has an inset, non-functional doorway and stands on its own. The thirty-two figures, the theater, and the set pieces are all finely drawn with pen and ink and brightly painted with watercolor by Alfred Henry Seymour, ostensibly for use by his children. Seymour worked his entire life at the Bank of England, and it is unclear if he had any formal artistic training; however, the degree of skill required to shape the wooden figures and create color images from black and white shows the craftsman to be a true artist. A final figure, that of the Duchess, survives from an earlier version made from mahogany and tinted with india ink and wash. A second Duchess was later reproduced using the final birch and watercolor technique, suggesting that the artist rejected his earlier attempt because of its more translucent finish. It does not appear that the theater was ever used; the figures were rediscovered after Seymour's death in 1993. Thus, they retain their pristine condition and bright coloration. A fine example of a unique "Alice" toy. (Proscenium measures 11 by 9 by 5 3/4 inches; average sized figure, the Queen of Hearts, stands at 3 3/4 inches tall; one of the largest pieces, Humpty Dumpty with Alice, is 6 1/8 inches tall and 4 3/4 inches wide).

(New York): High Tide Press, 1993. signatures and prints loosely inserted in orange and black faux fur fabric covered clam-shell box. High Tide Press. 4to. signatures and prints loosely inserted in orange and black faux fur fabric covered clam-shell box. Unpaginated. Prints by John Ross. This is one of 3 very special copies in color in an edition of 25 signed copies. Text translated by Lloyd Jonnes.11 structures metamorphosing into animals by John Ross. Collagraph images each on a 30? x 15? spread in a portfolio. Greek text in red, English text in black. Designed and printed by John Ross, with the assistance of Tim Ross and Ann Marie Farinacci on Stonehenge white. English text set in Primer and Greek text set by Cosmos Printing. Both texts are printed on a Vandercook proofing press. Headline and display type are from the High Tide collection and printed by John Ross. From the Introduction by Jonnes: "Certain of the animals perceived in the various structures here portrayed by the artist found themselves with their foibles discussed by classical authors. Some ten excerpts in Greek and in English translation from texts of two authors appear here. The first of these authors, if he existed, Physiologos (3rd -4th C. A.D.), used animals (and plant and minerals) in very simple parables for teaching the lessons of Christianity. The second, Claudius Aelianus (2nd C. A.D.), may have been seeking both to understand the animal kingdom and to entertain." The final excerpt comes not from a classical work, but as a giraffe was needed, from Denis Diderot, the French encyclopediest. John Ross writes: "The collagraph (a print pulled from a collage plate of cardboard, paper, sand, fabric, and found objects) is a particularly favored technique of mine and most of my images are created by this method..I do not bind my books, but use several binders whose work I have come to respect for their craftsmanship and ability. I have clear ideas as to what form these bindings should take to complement my own work. I am also convinced that text and image should reinforce and relate to each other: simple concept, but difficult achievement." Ross states: "My interest in metamorphosis shows itself in these books where animals or people turn into buildings or structures (or vice versa). I have been drawing such ideas for twenty years and have been able to convert some [of] the sketches into books. The Bestiary was inspired by the sight of structures which evoked other beings. Most of the images were made in Venice, Italy, in the summer of 1992.

        Typescript of Night Dogs

1993. Anderson's dot-matrix printout of a draft of what became the prologue and first chapter of his second novel. 24 pages, with extensive differences between this version and the published version. With a handwritten signed note by Anderson across the top of the first page, saying, in part, that he thinks the novel will be finished in another six weeks. Night Dogs was one of the most eagerly awaited novels of its time, but its publication was delayed as different publishers vied for it but no deal was reached for the publication rights. It was finally published in 1996 by Dennis McMillan, a small press/fine press publisher, primarily of limited editions. Later, in 1998, there was a publication by a major trade publishing house, Bantam, which had merged with Doubleday, the publisher of Anderson's first novel. This is a very early segment of the work-in-progress. Marked by a rusty paper clip, else fine. No Binding.

The Great American Horse Race of 1976 / A Photographic Documentary (SIGNED BY THE WINNER, VIRL O. NORTON)

1993 - 1976 cross-country endurance horse race undertaken to break the world record for longest such race (previously held by a 1,200-mile 1928 Portuguese contest) was won by Virg O. Norton on his remaining sound mule, a 7-year-old jack named Lord Fauntleroy ("Leroy.") Norton has inscribed, dated (Sept. 14, 1994) and double signed to the first blank page in red ball-point. Previous owner has hand-written the names of many contestants at their candid photos throughout, probably since most of these photos lack captions. We do NOT believe these hand-written names are autographs of the various participants, as they all appear to be in the same hand. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Stephanie Copoulos-Selle: "This book is a personal exploration of the twelve stages of life. It was influenced by a Book of Hours, a religious calendar book from the Middle Ages. The Red Book of Cycles is based on the twelve months of the year and references mythology from a variety of cultures. It begins with cosmology, and progresses through procreation, birth, youth, psychological fears, rebirths, rest time, celebration, and ends with unity of self. The 'guardians' refer to both the helpmates one encounters at the various stages of life and those guardians that restrict passage into forbidden areas.

The Contactees Manuscript - Witness ET

UFO Library Limited, Studio City, CA 1993 - Studio City, CA: UFO Library Limited, 1993. First Edition. Quarto, wraps, inexpensively reproduced in comb-binding with mylar cover-protector as issued. 133 numbered pages. Fine, with only micro trace wear and dust. See scans. Extraordinarily scarce first edition of Randazzo's accumulation (12 notable contributors are credited) of the stories of a number of twelve largely well-known (at least within the field) claimed contactees. Those are: George Adamski, Jerry Wells, Sixto Paz Wells, Charles A. Silva, Fred Bell, Hal Wilcox, Donna Butts, Eduard" Billy" Meier, Enrique C. Rincon, Benjamin Creme, Richard Rylka, and Claude Vorilhon ("Rael"). Note: one page of the section on Enrique C. Rincon is out of order (as-bound), but present. Rather startlingly in-depth for a survey volume, thus apparently well-researched. Primarily text, with some black and white photos of the contactees and other graphic elements, including a chart of some of the "Amercor" language (Donna Butts section). A very, very hard find within this UFO sub-field, particularly in Fine condition. See scans. LG6 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
