Sylvia Plath [Ted Hughes]
Superb presentation copy of Sylvia Plath's masterpiece inscribed by Ted Hughes to a friend and colleague of his - and Plath's - son, Nicholas Hughes. Accompanying the book is a long letter also written to the Alaskan bear-expert and conservationist John Hechtel in which Hughes recommends that he 'Keep the Ariel in seal - I mean in an airtight bag, if possible. That's if you want to keep its value. I'd be really interested, though, to hear that you'd traded it for the entire skull of [a] Mammoth, tusks intact.' The first edition of Ariel is inscribed by Hughes on the first blank: 'For John/ on account of Walrus willy-bones, fangs, claws & skulls/ Greetings from Ted May 1989'. Though clearly unread, during its fifty years on the shelves of Ted Hughes and later those of his daughter Frieda the book has acquired a small stain just below the gilt lettering on the spine which also appears on the verso of the jacket, also a tiny spot on the foreedge. Otherwise the jacket is fine with superb bright colour. Hughes' letter was written in July 1988 from the home he formerly shared with Plath at Court Green in Devon but was left unsent before being updated a year later at the same time that he inscribed this copy of Ariel (also gifting to Hechtel the copy of Ralph Steadman's Leonardo - see below on this list). The letter begins by discussing his failure to ask about Steadman's involvement in the 'Bear Safety book but I intend to.' The letter continues with a humorous account of the poet's problems with bringing his beloved natural history specimens into the country after trips to see h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rot, Diter / Roth, Dieter
COPLEY FOUNDATION, 1965. Fine copy of contents in a complete folder with some corner wear. Not too surprisingly, and due to our close inspection, the folder has come loose from the stapled content and left a small hole in the paper. Guaranteed complete. One phototgraph online shows a nine inch sliver of paper stapled in. Our copy includes this item as well as another sliver stapled in about one-third through, and it indicates that ours is complete. Sheets + 2 slim paper strip of 9"+ triple-fold pamphlet by Hamilton+ outer folder. Hamilton was all wrong about there being 112 sheets and probably wrong about 1750 copies. Where are all those copies? LACMA and other libraries note that their copy is only 30 sheets without describing its current state. The actual number of our sheets cannot be determined without de-stapling because there are several examples of a sheet being folded once or twice. Fine copy of contents in a complete folder with some corner wear. . *see three jpgs under J11074 in book jpgs file

Frank Herbert
fine in near fine dj. Frank Herbert (1965) 'Dune', US first edition, first printing, published by Chilton Company. This is a rare review copy (no physical difference to the true first edition) which was sent ahead of publication (1 October 1965) to selected booksellers. The original review slip is loosely laid in. The book is unread and in breathtaking condition. Housed in a clamshell case with Dune design protecting the book perfectly. Condition details: A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket for the harshest of judges with a bear minimum of shelf wear. There are no prevoius owners' names, no inscriptions, no bookplates, not stamps etc. Internally clean and spotless. The boards are tight and clean, with no bumps, no lean. Very slight discoluration to the boards' edges. The page block edges are white and NOT foxed. The dust jacket is original and UNRESTORED. It is the correct first issue wrapper with the USD 5.95 price and four lines of publisher information on the bottom rear flap. There is a little of edge wear (a little rubbing), but no tears. Perhaps a slight fade on the spine of the jacket hard to capture on camera. The dust jacket is so thin and fragile as dust jackets in the 1960s were so that very few specimen will be found in better condition than our example. The publication history of 'Dune' has become legendary. After researching sand dunes in Oregon Herbert got the idea to write the story. The novel was serialised in ANALOG magazine from Decmber 1963 onwards as 'Dune World' and 'Prophet of Dune'. After 23 rejections by established publishers, Chilton Company, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

[WARHOL, Andy]
Institute of Contemporary Art, 1965. First Edition. Original folded poster invitation; 3 3/4" x 9" folded and 22 3/4" x 22 1/2" open. Bit of toning, soil to one edge and a couple of tiny nicks. Very good plus to near fine. Very good +. Famed Green Stamp poster/invitation for Warhol's first retrospective, held at the University of Pennsylvania's Institute of Contemporary Art from October 8th through November 21st, 1965. An infamous event: curator Sam Green issued so many of these invitations that the venue was mobbed. Arthur Danto, in his recent biography of Warhol, described the scene: "There was a crowd of at least two thousand rapturous persons, most of them students. No one had expected a crowd that large, and the curator, Sam Green, to be prudent, removed most of the paintings from the walls, leaving the gallery all but bare. But the crowd had not come so much to look at the art as to see Warhol and his consort. Chants of 'Andy and Edie [Sedgwick]! Andy and Edie!' went up. People were jostled and trampled. It became a problem of crowd control much like what was happening at rock concerts. Andy, Edie, and their party [which included Green] found safety on an iron staircase, where [...] they waved at the crowds below. Finally a hole was axed in the ceiling, and [they] were able to escape to the floor above. Crowd behavior like that [...] was unheard of at art events [...] The change did not escape Warhol's notice. 'To think of it happening at an art opening,' he said. 'Even a Pop Art opening. But then, we weren't just at the art exhibit - we were the exhibit.'" (5). A cor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Williams, John
New York: The Viking Press, 1965. First edition of the author's classic work. Octavo, original half cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Nancy, with much affection, from the other Williams- John." From the library of Larry McMurtry with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Fine in an excellent dust jacket with some toning to the spine. Jacket design by Ellen Raskin. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional association. John Williams's luminous and deeply moving novel is a work of quiet perfection. William Stoner emerges from it not only as an archetypal American, but as an unlikely existential hero, standing, like a figure in a painting by Edward Hopper, in stark relief against an unforgiving world. "One of the great unheralded 20th-century American novels ...Almost perfect" (Bret Easton Ellis).

UNGERER (Tomi)
(1965) Belle affiche originale peu courante.

Williams, John
The Viking Press, New York, 1965. "One of the great unheralded 20th-century American novels .Almost perfect" (Bret Easton Ellis). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

BOLAN, Marc
1965. Fine. Unbound. An archive of items from the earliest part of the career of legendary British rock star Marc Bolan of T-Rex fame when he was only 18 and about to release his debut single on Decca Records in 1965. Included are two copies of the typed lyrics for his first single, "The Wizard"; two Autograph Notes Signed; five pages of typed poems stapled into a booklet; six 8" x 10" photographs taken by Fiona Adam, two of which show Bolan during his first recording session with producer Jim Economides; and a program for a Tyrannosaurus Rex tour two years later. All fine except for a small tear on the last page of the stapled poetry, a tack hole in one photo, and a couple annotations in red ink in the tour book. The collection comes from the archive of London *Sunday Times* music critic Derek Jewell, who while writing an article about Economides, was made aware of a young musician he was working with. A publicity letter dated 10 September 1965 sent to Jewell mentions Bolan and explains, "You will be hearing more from me concerning this boy, whom I feel has an appeal beyond the normal pop market." Quite an understatement. The first ANS is written on a white sheet that reads in full: "Derek thought you might like to see some poems. hope you like them. see you soon, sincerely Marc Bölan. P.S. words to the wizard on green paper. thanks." The second ANS is on a blue sheet: "Derek hope you like the pictures. first two are of the recording session. see you soon [arrow pointing down] Marc Bölan." Both signatures use the umlaut over the "o" in his last name, which was a new pseudo … [Click Below for Full Description]
