Sylvia Plath [inscribed by] Ted Hughes
Faber and Faber Ltd, London, 1965. A superb presentation copy of Sylvia Plath's masterpiece inscribed, but never given, by Ted Hughes to a friend and colleague of his - and Plath's - son, Nicholas Hughes. Accompanying the book is a long letter written to the Alaskan bear-expert and conservationist John Hechtel in which Hughes recommends that he 'Keep the Ariel in seal - I mean in an airtight bag, if possible. That's if you want to keep its value. I'd be really interested, though, to hear that you'd traded it for the entire skull of [a] Mammoth, tusks intact.' The first edition of Ariel is inscribed by Hughes on the first blank: 'For John/ on account of Walrus willy-bones, fangs, claws & skulls/ Greetings from Ted May 1989'. Though clearly unread, during its fifty years on the shelves of Ted Hughes and later those of his daughter Frieda the book has acquired a small stain just below the gilt lettering on the spine which also appears on the verso of the jacket, also a tiny spot on the foreedge. Otherwise the jacket is fine with superb bright colour. Hughes' letter was written in July 1988 from the home he formerly shared with Plath at Court Green in Devon but was left unsent before being updated a year later at the same time that he inscribed this copy of Ariel (also gifting to Hechtel the copy of Ralph Steadman's Leonardo - see below on this list). The letter begins by discussing his failure to ask about Steadman's involvement in the 'Bear Safety book but I intend to.' The letter continues with a humorous account of the poet's problems with bringing his beloved natural histo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bukowski, Charles
Lyle Stuart, New York, 1965. 4to, 101pp; original wrappers. One of a stated 3100 copies in the edition, signed and dated by Bukowski at the colophon. As with all Loujon Press productions, the book is marked by a whimsical style using multi-colored papers of varying stocks and even sizes. Loujon proprietors Jon and Louise "Gypsy Lou" Webb were important early supporters of Bukowski, especially in their short-lived periodical "The Outsider". This book, along with their earlier Bukowski title, It Catches My Heart in its Hands, helped put him on the map early in his career and bring him to the attention of a literary audience that has continued to grow. An exceptionally fresh copy. Fine, bright copy with the original printed wraparound band (partly torn) and just the slightest of rubbing to the extremities. [Attributes: First Edition]

Fuck You Press, New York, 1965. 4to. Side-stapled mimeo wraps. Toning to extremities. Edgewear with some minor creasing and chipping. Soil here and there. Else clean and sound. Contributors include Ted Berrigan, John Wieners, Al Fowler, Gilbert Sorrentino, Robert Kelly, and others. Along with the debut and Mad Motherfucker (with its famed Warhol cover) issues, one of the most difficult numbers to acquire. In January 1966, Sander's Peace Eye Bookstore was raided by police and copies of FU were confiscated. FLEMING Ian
1965. First edition, first issue, second state, binding A, with all of the issue points. 8vo. Original black cloth, gilt lettering on spine, green endpapers decorated with a white 'fibre pattern'. Top edge a little browned and spotted. Publisher's decorative clip on all four corners of the dust-jacket, and 18s net price. A near fine copy. London, Jonathan Cape. The final James Bond novel. Ian Fleming died before the publication of this book, in August 1964. First state bindings of this novel are very rare, with only 940 copies having been bound with the golden gun stamped on the front cover. The decision was made early on that binding the entire run with the 'golden gun' on the front cover would be too costly, and so the decision was made to have the rest bound without. Jon Gilbert. Ian Fleming the Bibliography. A13a. (1.2) Binding A. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

McPhee, John
Farrar , Straus and Giroux, New York, 1965. Association copy inscribed by Bill Bradley with two handwritten letters by John McPhee. Fine in an about near fine jacket, unclipped ($3.75), faded on the spine, lightly rubbed on the back panel. Black cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Square and firmly bound, clean and seemingly unread. A unique copy warmly inscribed on the title page by Bill Bradley to Peter Briggs, an accomplished educator who served as the headmaster at a number of prep schools. McPhee acknowledges that fact in his letter, written on Princeton University letterhead, addressed to Payson Stewart Briggs. McPhee writes in part that Payson was "born very close to the time when I was a visiting writer at Western Reserve Academy and your father was headmaster there." This connection betwen McPhee and Peter Briggs explains the second handwritten letter by McPhee. Written on a folded 8.5x11" piece of paper, McPhee addresses Peter Briggs and writes, "Two of my nephews, now 47 and 55, went to The Potomac school. I hope this inscription is what you had in mind. Sandy sends his best wishes to you. Regards, John." It appears that Peter Briggs sent this copy to John McPhee so McPhee could get it inscribed by Bill Bradley. Perhaps it was Briggs cashing in on a favor earned years ago at the Western Reserve Academy. Regardless, a one-of-a-kind copy of McPhee's debut. Original red morocco, gilt-lettered and -decorated on front cover with the papal arms, top edges gilt, others untrimmed; plain paper wrapper; red cloth folding case; publisher's wooden shipping box. Printed on Magnani di Pescia mould-made paper. The Italian text version of the Apostolico Instituto Biblioco, with a dedication to Pope Paul VI in memory of Cardinal Bevilacqua. Type: Bembo 30 point roman; titles and initials in various size of Zeno roman. "The first person to discuss this work with me was the great preacher Father Giulio Bevilacqua, then still at Brescia... It was to be a lectern version - in Italian, not in the customary Latin - of those passages from the Gospels that are read on the twenty most important feast days of the Church. In his mind's eye Father Giulio saw the huge folio open on the altar of such days, the text in very large type clearly legible at a distance. By a strange coincidence, the hand press on which the book was to be printed stood in a seventeenth-century house which had been built on a hill just outside Verona by the Bevilacqua family. As a child Father Giulio had often visited his relations, who in those days still lived there. He was an eminent theologian and trusted advisor of Pope Paul VI, who made him a Cardinal. After his sudden much-lamented death the printing of the Evangeliario wa … [Click Below for Full Description]
