Gilbert, Allan (translator) and Niccolò Machiavelli
Durham, N.C. Duke University Press, 1965. First Edition. Octavo. Machiavelli; the Chief Works and Others. Durham, N.C.: Duke University Press, 1965. First Edition. Octavo. In three volumes inscribed by Gilbert to "President Robert F. Oxnam/with my best regards/Allan Gilbert". The translator includes all of the works on which depends the fame of Machiavelli, and a considerable number of the secondary writings. He also includes a large part of his verse, which are seldom translated, and with others of literary quality. Machiavelli has been known as historian and a political thinker, but he was also a poet. The index has been especially designed to supply cross references, so that all passages in which Machiavelli deals with any topic can easily be brought together. The controversial owner, Bishop Oxnam, was known not only for his near heretical statements of theology infuriating the conservative Methodist but he also held his own and embarrassed the members of the House of Unamerican Activities Committee by displaying his diary and pointing out their erroneous statements. A fine set bound in gray cloth, spine lettering gilt over red, housed within publisher's slipcase with pictorial paste down label.

MELLER, JAMES. WARHOL, ANDY.
London: Institute of Contemporary Arts., 1965. First edition. Single sheet.. Very Good. Card. 220x220. Collage by James Meller after Andy Warhol 'Most Wanted Men'; Al Capone. Mounted collage on card. James Meller was one of the 8 founding members of Foster Associates in 1967. He was also a graphic designer who worked extensively for the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. While a student at Oxford he had a group show at the New Vision Gallery with Tim Wallis, George Coral and Raymond Wilson. Granta the Oxford student magazine had contributions by a number of the Independent Group and their associates, notably John McHale and Ryaner Banham. Warhol's large mural of 1964 was intended to hang on the outside of the Theaterama, a circular cinema 100 feet (30 m) in diameter. Intending to depict "something to do with New York", and taking inspiration from Marcel Duchamp's 1923 work Wanted, $2,000 Reward (in which Duchamp put his own photograph in a wanted poster), Warhol decided to print large-scale copies of images from a booklet published on 1 February 1962 by the New York Police Department, entitled "The Thirteen Most Wanted", showing 22 head-and-shoulder mug shots of the wanted men.

René MAGRITTE
Handwritten letter, signed with his initials: "L'imaginaire" "The imaginary" perhaps now replaces "l'Idéal" "the Ideal" of a past era"Brussels 9 January 1965, 13.5 x 20.5 cm, two pages on one leafSignificant letter written by René Magritte to André Bosmans, dated 9 January 1965 and signed with his initials. 35 lines in black ink on one leaf with the heading "René Magritte 97, rue des Mimosas, Bruxelles 3 Téléphone 15.07.30" "René Magritte 97, rue des Mimosas, Brussels 3 Telephone 15.07.30." Several words crossed out and passages underlied. Published in the Lettres à André Bosmans 1958-1967, Seghers I. Brachot, 1990, pp. 407-408A letter that is both comical and of great philosophical depth, in which the surrealist painter René Magritte tackles the question of the imagination and inspiration. In it there is a very pertinent analysis of the issues of aesthetics and of modern thinking, even though the painter is seeking inspiration to produce the cover of the next XXe siècle, an avant-garde artistic and literary journal (issue XXV, June 1965). Magritte addresses this letter to his great friend André Bosmans, a school teacher, poet and editor-in-chief of Rhétorique, a literary journal to which Magritte actively contributed. The painter, then in full mastery of his art, enjoyed international recognition since the beginning of the 1960s. His work has already been the object of numerous retrospectives in France and in Belgium, and will be celebrated on the other side of the Atlantic several months later at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His letter is divided between humour a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frank O'Hara
Tibor de Nagy Editions, New York, 1965. Square 12mo. Wrappers. 32pp. One of 480 copies (of 500). O'Hara's last book to be published in his lifetime, edited by John Bernard Myers and designed by Fred R. Siegle. Near Very Good, the wrappers slightly rubbed to extremities and with light superficial rubbing and a little soiling, the fore edge just faintly toned. Upper corner gently bumped, and with a bump to the lower panel. Just a hint of fading to the purple stripe nearest the spine, the spine with some spotting and stained along the lower fold (probably from the binding process). Usual offsetting of the stripes onto the title page, the contents clean. This copy has the ownership inscription of John James; O'Hara's 'Poem' on p.5 was presumably where James found the name for one of his imprints, Avocado Salad. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Toning to spine; traces of soil to front panel with heavier soiling and spotting to rear panel. Gift inscription penned to title page verso. From an edition of 500 copies. The final book by O'Hara published during his lifetime, following LUNCH POEMS. Edited John Bernard Myers writes of the publication: "I waited for these poems for three or four years . When [Frank] did give them to me I couldn't induce him to arrange them in their proper sequence nor give me a title. I wrote 'Love Poems (Tentative Title' on the first page, then arranged them so that the sequence would show the beginning of a new love, its middle period of floundering, the collapse of the affair with its attendant sadness and regret. Frank liked the arrangement and my 'tentative' title. And that was that." [Smith A9]. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

LENNON, John (1940-1980).
London: Jonathan Cape, 1965. UNCORRECTED PROOF COPY IN DUSTWRAPPER, with various differences to the published version. Duodecimo (18 x 14cm), pp.96. Printed sheets, sewn, with blank endleaves, in a proof-only dust-wrapper. Profusely illustrated with Lennon's idiosyncratic drawings. A lovely fine copy, inside and out. The most important and obvious difference between this proof and the trade edition is the presence of a dust jacket. The published version featured photographic covers, but no jacket. This proof jacket has the same design as the hard covers, but carries an exclusive blurb to the front flap and publication details to rear flap. Within the book there are also a number of significant changes, primarily concerning the colour. In the trade version the two colours brown and green are used within the text and for the illustrations. These colours vary in the proof- the brown is much paler and the green less olive and more mint in shade; the most noticeable feature however is the presence of two great blocks of colour within the proof that were simply omitted in the trade version, as follows; i) p. 10-11 has a large green floor (uncoloured/ white floor when published). ii) final page 'the end' has a (presumably) grassy hillside (non-existent when published). Copy is in near fine condition; jacket a little worn to spine tips and rubbed at joints, small name above frontispiece illustration. An uncommon proof- we have seen only one other copy in the last decade.

Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Laminate at joints lifting slightly, as invariably happens, tiny scratch to front cover, two tiny spots of foxing to edges, else a fine, bright copy. First edition, first impression, signed by the author on the front free endpaper. Lennon's second book, A Spaniard in the Works is a collection of nonsensical stories and drawings much like his first book, In His Own Write (1964). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
