Claude Spaak
A. B., [Brno], 1965. Oblong folio (13 × 21.5 cm). Blue embossed cloth; [14] leaves of mimeographed typescript to rectos and [21] leaves of original photographic prints of Delvaux's work, apparently taken from the original book publication. Very good; owner inscription to title. Unrecorded surrealist samizdat created by Arno?t Budík, a founding member of the Brno-based post-war Czech surrealist group Lacoste (Skupina Lacoste). This copy is no. 1 of only four copies (only two were illustrated); it belonged to the artist and publisher himself. Meant to introduce the work of the Belgian surrealist painter to a small circle of Czech artists, the book reproduces Budík's own translation of the French original essay, which was published in Anvers in 1948. Along with twenty-one reproductions of paintings by Delvaux, presumably photographed from the original book and thus accompanied by their own blurred aura of reproduction. Not located in KVK, OCLC. Spelling, Aaron (executive producer); Gloria and Forrest E.
Four Star Productions. Vintage photographic title cards and title design sketches for the seminal 1965 television series, notable for having utilized these photographs rather than filmed performances for its title sequence. Included are ten double weight photographs, several signed by the series' star, Anne Francis, and four title design sketches that were ultimately made into overlays ("Starring Anne Francis," "Honey West" in two different styles, etc.) The title sequence was originally designed by Format Productions, Inc., the company responsible for the title sequence in "I Spy", "Hee Haw", and other notable television shows of the 1960s and 1970s. The photographs include several shots of Francis, both in action and posed for danger, some with cutout photo overlays, whiteout, etc., to achieve the look needed for the title sequence. Also present are two photos of John Ericson (Honey's assistant Sam Bolt), and one kaleidoscopic shot of a criminal in sunglasses who is laughing maniacally. One photograph, shot and sized differently than the others, is the striking photo of Honey West's pet ocelot Bruce, the image that ends the show's title sequence. The first American television program to star a female private detective, based on the novels by Gloria and Forrest Fickling, and conceived by Aaron Spelling after seeing the success of Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) as a female crime buster in the British series "The Avengers," but with the female character fully up front rather than part of an ensemble. After being turned down by Honor Blackman (who had at the time wowed audiences as P … [Click Below for Full Description]

Peter Hill Beard
The Viking Press : New York. The End of the Game by Peter Beard First Edition, First Printing, 1965 This is a first edition, first printing of Peter Beard's highly photobook "The End of the Game" published by The Viking Press, New York in 1965. Focusing on the widespread destruction of the African elephant, Beard tells of the enterprisers, explorers, missionaries, and big-game hunters whose quests for progress and adventure were to change the face of Africa for ever. David Levi Strauss in "The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century" wrote, "In addition to being singularly beautiful, "The End of the Game" is thoughtful as well. Long taken a seminal book on wildlife conservation, it is actually an epic visual poem on the subject of the loss, especially the ultimate loss of life...The book is philosophical about the rapid despoliation of East African wildlife, especially the elephants. "Death", writes Beard in his introduction, "is the patiently awaited, unfeared fact of delicately poised African life." On its publication in 1965, Beard's book was immediately acclaimed, with not one but two glowing reviews in The New York Times. Featuring 75 black-and-white and color photographic plates along with numerous in-text illustrations and measuring approximately 11" x 9.5", the book is bound in gray cloth covered boards with a photographically illustrated dust jacket. The condition of the book is Near Fine with an ink inscription dedication. A very bright copy of this classic book. The plates are in incredible condition. JOPLIN, Janis
Port Arthur, Texas, 1965. Letter #11 Written by Janis Joplin to Her Fiance Peter J. De Blanc. [JOPLIN, Janis]. ALS to Peter J. De Blanc. [from envelope postmark: Port Arthur, Texas: September 3, 1965]. Letter #11 of a series of letter written by Janis Joplin to her then fiance Peter J. De Blanc. Letter signed "J". Two quarto pages (7 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches; 199 x 147 mm). Black ink, written on recto only of each sheet. With addressed envelope. Place, date and letter number from envelope. A very good example. "I just called you . And now I've had my little cry & now? I am writing you another g-ddam letter! And you aren't even f-cking reading them anyway probably. Well, true to course, here we are again in our respective roles. I just can't believe myself! My "role" is to somehow, w/ remarkable shortsightedness still believe that you couldn't have done it. Wow, I'm so funny! I've thought at times that I must be very masochistic because I never learn- I mean you just keep hurting me over & over. And then I have also thought that my going w/ you might just be an expression of my lack of respect for men in general- I mean, I had to pick one that wouldn't make it. But this is probably all just typical Janis-over-introspection. Jesus God, Peter, I don't know! I just want to make one point in continuing this sham if that is all this is. That, unless this is all you are doing, it isn't going to work anyway. We aren't ever going to be able to be married & be happy if we aren't doing, right now, our respective parts of leading up to a happy & profitable marriage. So baby, where are you? Barbara Rubin
1965. Item #4598 New York, 1965.Filmmaker and writer Barbara Rubin was born in the Cambria Heights neighborhood of Queens. Atthe age of 17, shortly after being released from a period of institutionalization in Connecticut, shebegan working for Jonas Mekas at the Filmmaker's Cinematheque, a fortuitous development thatallowed her to begin working on her erotic and transgressive first film, Christmas On Earth, filmedin the Lower East Side apartment of Tony Conrad and John Cale on Ludlow. There had never been a film like Christmas on Earth before, not least for a degree of sexualexplicitness rarely seen before in a film by a woman. Mekas stated "as the film goes, image afterimage, the most private territories of the body are laid open for us... a syllogism: Barbara Rubin hasno shame; angels have no shame; Barbara Rubin is an angel."During the next few years she was an active participant in the New York underground art scene, where she introduced Allen Ginsberg to Bob Dylan, and Andy Warhol to the Velvet Underground,at whose Exploding Plastic Inevitable Performances she both participated and projected her film,as well as organizing some of the first light shows in New York City. Rubin filmed the Velvets in anearly performance in 1965, however, the footage is now lost. She drew up plans for sequels to herfilm - Christmas On Earth Continued, and Christmas on Earth Continued Again, neither of whichwas filmed, making the scripts included her valuable documentation of unrealized work. One ofher synopses, sent to none other than Walt Disney, proposed a film in which Jean Genet, playingh … [Click Below for Full Description]

Plath, Sylvia
Faber & Faber. First edition, first impression. Fine: tight and square binding in sharp and vivid red cloth; bright gilt; a little minor spotting to the top-edge of the page block, one small spot to the fore-edge and a handful of very faint spots to the bottom-corner of each free endpaper, else delightfully crisp and clean; a previous owner’s name neatly to the top of the ffep, dated ‘March 1965’ (the month of publication). The unclipped dustwrapper (12s 6d net stated) is Near Fine: notably clean, bright and vibrant, with none of the toning and grubbiness that is usually seen; the merest trace of sunning to the yellow colouring at the spine; modest rubbing to the spine tips and corners; 8mm closed tear to the head of the lower flap fold (professional mending tissue to the verso); presented in a removable protective cover. A lovely example. All orders are sent very carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

London: Faber & Faber, 1965. First edition, first printing. Original red cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed dustwrapper which has a couple of tiny nicks at the spine tips and a few foxing spots to the far edge of the rear panel. Unusually the spine remains bright and without fading. Not price-clipped (12s 6d net to the front flap). An attractive example. PLATH, SYLVIA
London: Faber and Faber, 1965. Uncorrected Proof Copy of the First edition. SCARCE UNCORRECTED PROOF OF THE FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL WORKS OF AMERICAN POETRY. Ariel(1965)--a collection of Plath's later poems that included 'Daddy' and another of her well-known poems, 'Lady Lazarus'--sparked the growth of a much broader following of devoted and enthusiastic readers than she had during her lifetime. Ariel received a review in The New York Times that praised its 'relentless honesty,' 'sophistication of the use of rhyme,' and 'bitter force,' and Poetry magazine noted 'a pervasive impatience, a positive urgency to the poems.' Plath quickly became one of the most popular American poets" (Britannica). Ariel, Plath's second book of poetry, was (controversially) edited by her husband Ted Hughes and published in 1965, two years after her death. London: Faber and Faber, 1965. Octavo, original printed wrappers. Wrappers with early (unidentified) signature on front, light soiling. EXTREMELY RARE. Very Good.

PLATH, Sylvia.
London: Faber and Faber, 1965. London: Faber and Faber,, 1965. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket and the wraparound band. Minor rubbing to spine ends, patch of glue residue to front free endpaper; else a near-fine copy in the jacket with slight nicks to spine ends and top edge, and uncommon wraparound band with tiny nick to front flap. First edition, first impression. This copy from the library of Alice Mackenzie Swaim (1911-1996), with her book label on the front pastedown. Swaim was a successful poet, published in The New York Times, The American Bard, Modern Images, and more, and wrote as a poetry critic for the American Poetry League and the National Writers Club. She won the Presidents Award for Literary Excellence and the Woman of the Year Award (American Biographical Institute) in 1994. Ariel is Plath's most enduring poetry book, published two years after her suicide, edited by Ted Hughes and with an introduction by Robert Lowell. Plath believed her Ariel poems to be the best she had ever produced, "announcing to her mother that 'they will make my name'" (ODNB).

PLATH, Sylvia.
London Faber and Faber, 1965. First edition, 8vo., publisher's crimson cloth, spine lettered in gilt, yellow dust-jacket printed in blue and dark red, spine browned, minor chipping to spine ends and corners, original wraparound band, a very good copy of the collection of poems that includes Lady Lazarus; Daddy; Nick and the Candlestick; Poppies in July; etc. An excellent example of Plath's second collection of poetry, published two years after her death and containing many of her best known poems, especially scarce with the original wraparound band. When published the Ariel poems created quite a stir on both sides of the Atlantic, not least because of its dark energy and forceful imagery. Plath brilliantly and courageously fuses the personal with the universal. Perhaps the most famous, still, of the Ariel poems are Lady Lazarus - 'Out of the ash/ I rise with my red hair/ And I eat men like air', and Daddy - 'There's a stake in your fat black heart.'
