Dom Sylvester Houedard (dsh)
Dom Sylvester Houedard (dsh). dsh, untitled typestract, undated (c1965). Red typewriter ink, off-white paper, 145 x 138 mm. Sadly this work has condition issues despite its excellent provenance. At some point the work was mounted onto white card, fractions of the original card remain on the reverse. The work has been effected by damp with mildew marks on the reverse, showing onto the front in places. The white paper has been painted with tipp-ex. The red type by dsh is clear and bright and hasn’t been reworked. Whilst undated and unsigned, dsh expert Nicola Simpson dates the work either c1964 when dsh first began making grids, or c1966-7 when dsh worked with just one or two keys. Despite the poor condition the work still has presence and we think would frame well. Overall condition: Poor

V. Karashev
Russia, 1965. Original vintage Soviet movie poster for the 1958 Polish war film ????? ? ????? / Ashes and Diamonds / Popió? i diament directed by Andrzej Wajda (1926-2016), based on the 1948 novel by the Polish writer Jerzy Andrzejewski (1909-1983) and starring Zbigniew Cybulski and Ewa Krzyzewska, Waclaw Zastrzezynski. Dynamic artwork featuring a man in glasses shaded in black and grey running on the side with the title and text in stylised black and red letters. Ashes and Diamonds completed Wajda's war films trilogy of A Generation (1954) and Kanal (1956), the title from a 19th century poem by the Polish poet Cyprian Norwid (1821-1883) referencing the formation of diamonds from heat and pressure on coal; this film is considered by critics to be one of the great masterpieces of Polish cinema and arguably the finest Polish realist film, which has also been cited as one of the favourite films of Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola and voted the 86th best film of all time in a Village Voice poll. PK HOENICH
Haifa, Israel: Technion Research and Development Foundation Ltd, 1965. Condition: Very good. 4to. Publisher's pale green wraps with cloth tape binding (as issued). Briefly INSCRIBED by Hoenich at title page and dated 1964. Wraps lightly toned. Minor wear at corners. Spine sunned. Very good. From an edition of 200. [xii], 64, [6, plates]. Alternatively titled "THE HOPEFUL MONSTER: A Subjective Report About Art-Robots," an unusual academic report of the machine-aided artistic techniques of P.K. Hoenich, professor of art at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. Primarily consisting of theories on the possibilities of robot art, it includes a complete a history of its development and full details of technical elements. Educated in various European art academies and originally a painter in the fauvist style, Hoenich reached the conclusion in the mid 1950s that because of technological progression and the development of film, figurative painting was being rendered obsolete and that visual art must incorporate a dimension of time. To this end, Hoenich developed a process incorporating machines, or "art-robots," for what he called sunray paintings. Using light and shadow with the aid of specially designed projectors, screens, glass sculptures, and other often mechanical objects, Hoenich created vivid, kinetic abstractions, examples of which can be seen in the nine photographic plates tipped into the edition. In the introduction to this volume, Hoenich takes a reactionary position against currents of contemporary art as unnecessarily shocking and primitive, and seeks to create jo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zita L. Wright
Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Co, 1965. School library discard with usual pocket and stamps, mylar protected dust jacket with tape stains, pages clean and tight. Pat Doyle, daughter of an iron miner, is proud of the town where she lives, in spite of its mining-town look and its many drab rows of all-the-same houses. She is especially proud of the Ski Club that sponsors a winter carnival, ski races and a tournament, and does not mind a bit that its trails are laid at the end of a cemetery road. At least, not until an ominous series of events began: ice on the toboggan run, stolen skis, a cut towrope, the ransacked club house - these weren't just coincidences, Pat felt, and when after a particularly terrifying experience she saw the "ghost skier," she was sure someone was causing the accidents on purpose.

ROCHESTER, Nathaniel.) CHOMSKY, Noam.
Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press, 1965. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt. Cloth very lightly rubbed and scuffed. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. From the library of early computer scientist Nathaniel Rochester, with his contemporary ownership inscription to the front free endpaper. Noam Chomsky's revolutionary linguistics work was enthusiastically received by many computer scientists, and influenced the development of computer languages and artificial intelligence. This volume's owner, Nathaniel Rochester (1919-2001), was an IBM computer engineer who developed the concept of symbolic assembly language programming; was the chief architect for the IBM 700 series, including the firm's first computer for scientific applications (701) and their first mass-produced general purpose computer (702); and did pioneering research on artificial intelligence, heading the IBM team that studied pattern recognition and information theory during the 1950s. The copy of Chomsky's "Three models for the description of language" in Hook & Norman's Origins of Cyberspace (number 532) belonged to Rochester. A superb association. Gunda, Antal
1965. Size: B4 (cca. 25 x 35 cm). Impressive poster design from the 1960s created by Antal Gunda a fine poster designer to remember the October Revolution of Russia in 1917 A new period started in Hungarian poster art after the 1956 revolution The former R aacute kosi regime was replaced by the K aacute d aacute r system and the new political situation determined the cultural changes as well The former great expansion of political propaganda posters of the 1950s came to an end as the new political leadership realized that political issues should be avoided on streets Along with political propaganda posters commercial posters also disappeared for a while due to the lack of products and independent clients On the other hand the genre of cultural poster had its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s Although political matters could not appear on posters of the time there was an exception big annual political events state celebrations and anniversaries These events could fit in the range of cultural events and posters of them also could function as cultural posters These annual events generated a separated type of cultural poster design and they also gave a hard task to poster designers The topic was the same year by year and the iconography had its own recurrent elements waving flags emblematic state buildings and political symbols appeared in these posters It didn rsquo t belong to the fancied duty of poster artists neither but it was a help in case of a constraint of financial matters Compared to the average number of copies of a poster which was about 400 4000 these posters had a hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

WHITMAN. One of the rarest Gilligan's Island item there is, never comes up. It has slight storage wear, but has never been opened! Collecting Gilligan's Island by Bill Morgan On September 26, 1964, a simplistic and sappy television program began a course that would become far more than just a fateful trip. Gilligan's Island, which consisted of just 98 episodes, is now one of the longest running syndicated television shows in history. Since the three original seasons ended more than 30 years ago, Gilligan's Island has reached cult status with a tidal wave of devoted fans. With this kind of attention, it seems that the seven castaways have become permanently stranded in rerun heaven. The crew's adventures have spilled over into several spin-offs. The first was The New Adventures of Gilligan, a Saturday morning animated cartoon based on the original series that ran for three years starting in 1974. With the exception of Tina Louise (Ginger) and Dawn Wells (Mary Ann), the original cast members gave voice to their cartoon counterparts. A made-for-TV movie, Rescue from Gilligan's Island, aired in 1978. All of the original cast except for Tina Louise (who was replaced by Judith Baldwin) reprised their roles. The movie was moderately successful, and inspired two other made-for-TV movies, The Castaways on Gilligan's Island (1979), and The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island (1981). While the latter two plummeted in the ratings, they contained an interesting concept - returning to Gilligan's Island to open a resort for visitors. Had the program succeeded, creator/producer Sherw … [Click Below for Full Description]

[WARHOL, Andy]
Philadelphia: Institute of Contemporary Art, 1965. First Edition. Very good +. Original folded poster invitation; 3 3/4” x 9” folded and 22 3/4” x 22 1/2” open. Bit of toning, soil to one edge and a couple of tiny nicks. Very good plus to near fine. Famed Green Stamp poster/invitation for Warhol's first retrospective, held at the University of Pennsylvania's Institute of Contemporary Art from October 8th through November 21st, 1965. An infamous event: curator Sam Green issued so many of these invitations that the venue was mobbed. Arthur Danto, in his recent biography of Warhol, described the scene: "There was a crowd of at least two thousand rapturous persons, most of them students. No one had expected a crowd that large, and the curator, Sam Green, to be prudent, removed most of the paintings from the walls, leaving the gallery all but bare. But the crowd had not come so much to look at the art as to see Warhol and his consort. Chants of 'Andy and Edie [Sedgwick]! Andy and Edie!' went up. People were jostled and trampled. It became a problem of crowd control much like what was happening at rock concerts. Andy, Edie, and their party [which included Green] found safety on an iron staircase, where [...] they waved at the crowds below. Finally a hole was axed in the ceiling, and [they] were able to escape to the floor above. Crowd behavior like that [...] was unheard of at art events [...] The change did not escape Warhol's notice. 'To think of it happening at an art opening,' he said. 'Even a Pop Art opening. But then, we weren't just at the art exhibit — we were the exhib … [Click Below for Full Description]
