Capote, Truman
Random House, New York, 1965. First edition of Capote's landmark non-fiction novel. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Truman Capote on a tipped in page. "Until one morning in mid-November of 1959, few Americans--in fact, few Kansans--had ever heard of Holcomb. Like the waters of the river, like the motorists on the highway, and like the yellow trains streaking down the Santa Fe tracks, drama, in the shape of exceptional happenings, had never stopped there." If all Truman Capote did was invent a new genre--journalism written with the language and structure of literature--this "nonfiction novel" about the brutal slaying of the Clutter family by two would-be robbers would be remembered as a trail-blazing experiment that has influenced countless writers. But Capote achieved more than that. He wrote a true masterpiece of creative nonfiction. In Cold Blood established Capote as the "herald of a new genre, ‘the non-fiction novel,’ which recognizes the convergence of fiction and fact in times of outrage, the insane surrealism of daily life" (Hart, 122; Allen, 247). "The best documentary account of an American crime ever written. . . . The book chills the blood and exercises the intelligence . . . harrowing" (The New York Review of Books). A small puncture through the first few pages in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket with some light rubbing to the extremities. Jacket design by S. Neil Fujita. Fleming, Ian
Jonathan Cape, London, 1965. First edition of the fourteenth novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Roger Moore on the half-title page. Moore played James Bond in the film Octopussy. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Richard Chopping. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional presentation. Published posthumously, Octopussy and The Living Daylights marks Ian Fleming’s final contribution to the legacy of his iconic creation, 007 James Bond. These four tales of intrigue are a novel gaze into the deepest character of Bond. The two original stories, "Octopussy" and "The Living Daylights", were both adapted for publication in comic strip format in the Daily Express in 1966-1967. Elements from the stories have also been used in the Eon Productions Bond films. The first, Octopussy, starring Roger Moore as James Bond, was released in 1983 as the thirteenth film in the series and provided the back story for the film Octopussy's family, while "The Property of a Lady" was more closely adapted for an auction sequence in the film. The Living Daylights, released in 1987, was the fifteenth Bond film produced by Eon and starred Timothy Dalton in his first appearance as Bond. "007 in New York", provided character and plot elements for the first two films starring Daniel Craig as Bond, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. The Schine Inn, in Chicopee, Massachusetts, was Ali's home base for the month or so before the fight, where he trained and rested before the big day. A 2016 Masslive profile of this historical moment in Chicopee history specifically notes that Louis, Braddock, and Walcott visited Ali "a few days before he left, " which comports with the date of 5/20, just five days before the fight in Lewiston. Walcott would be the referee for the big fight. Ali successfully challenged Liston for the Heavyweight title the previous year, and their rematch had been scheduled for November, 1964. But, due to Ali's emergency surgery and recovery, they had to change dates and venues, to a small arena in Lewiston, Maine. The arena held about 4500 seats, but was only about half-filled, certainly one of the least-attended title fights of the period, no doubt due in part to the remote location. This was right around the time of Ali's conversion to Islam, and his much-discussed name change. T … [Click Below for Full Description]

MALCOLM X and HALEY, Alex
New York: Grove Press, 1965. Octavo, 455pp. Publisher's original black cloth, original dust jacket. The Book is fine with no signs of previous ownership; light wrinkling and a crease to cover of the wrapper, else a near-fine dust jacket with no chipping housed in a black clamshell box. FIRST EDITION With "First Printing" on the copyright page of this modern American classic— "a document for our time" (New York Times) — with 16 pages of photographic illustrations, in original dust jacket. "His autobiography, a story of self-creation and redemption, reveals the complicated, compelling, still-evolving private man. Jailed for burglary, in the closed world of prison Malcolm Little found freedom in the power of the word. He read prodigiously; became a passionate convert to Elijah Muhammad's Black Muslim movement; and walked out as Malcolm X Each of these changes was a stage in a long intellectual journey, uncompleted at his death. 'If I'm alive when this book comes out, it will be a miracle,' he wrote. 'It's a time for martyrs now" (Books of the Century, 61). Published after a lengthy collaboration with Alex Haley and shortly after Malcolm X's assassination in February the same year, The Autobiography of Malcolm X was immediately praised as "a brilliant, painful, important book as a document for our time, its insights may be crucial; its relevance cannot be doubted" (New York Times). Charles Bukowski
his is a beautiful book produced by LouJon Press in New Orleans in 1965. The book itself is a work of art, hand printed with individual stocks of high-quality paper. A total of 3,100 copies were printed, each signed by Charles Bukowski. The book is every bit a piece of art as the Charles Bukowski poetry it contains. But what makes this copy special is the original artwork by Bukowski and the inscription with the date and time. It's rare to find a book where Bukowski included the date with his signature. I have never seen an inscription with the exact time. Bukowski signed 95 percent of these books while writing the poems for this book in New Orleans on a three-week binge. The most desirable copies included artwork by Bukowski. It's hard to say what he was depicting in this drawing, but based on other copies I've seen, it's the architecture in the French Quarter. This is a true collector's copy. This copy does not include the original book band, which many copies do not. But it is in Near Fine condition with a small tear to the delicate fold on one spine. See pics. I specialize in Charles Bukowski books only. I am selling a wide variety of Bukowski items that will fit any budget and are all very collectible. I can also help you independently verify any of the items I sell so there will be no disappointments. [Attributes: First Edition]

Copy number 3 of 5 [from an edition of 500] of Bukowski's private "Author's Edition," with a typescript signed by Bukowski stapled in at the center. At some point he created a small private 'Author's Edition' by tipping in or binding in at the center staple either an original signed illustration or a signed typescript poem. Not less than three nor more than five such copies were created." This copy in particular is mentioned by Krumhansl as the Polak copy. 23 pp. Stapled tan wraps. Near Fine, faint waves to wraps. Bukowksi's only self-published chapbook, comprised of "overlooked (or looked-over and shunned)" poems. Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

1965. [Le vieil homme et l'enfant] Vintage original 26 x 35" (66 x 90 cm.) silkscreen art poster, USA. Â Our friend, poster collector and dealer Daniel Strebin, provided this information: About a decade ago, he received consignments of Saul Bass silkscreens from the Bass estate. He personally saw invoices for some of them which were printed around 1965. Most of the silkscreens were produced at Art Krebs Studio in Los Angeles. Bass continued to have silkscreens created up until around 1980. All of the silkscreen editions appear to have been in editions of between 50-150. It also seems that once an edition was exhausted, Bass did not make a second edition; as a result, all of these art silkscreens are very rare indeed. Â Bass never intended for these posters to be sold -- they were intended to be given away. Since he was frequently frustrated with the compromises the film studios inflicted on his magnificent modernist designs, the silkscreens were intended to represent his imagery in its purest possible form. Â This was for the US release of a French film by Claude Berri, about a young Jewish boy who goes to live with a Catholic couple in France during World War II. The husband (Michel Simon), who does not know his young charge is Jewish, is in fact a virulent anti-Semite, but comes to love the young man and outgrow his prejudices. The original US theatrical one sheet poster has a similar design, but it is only printed in black, with an obtrusive slogan at the top -- making this silkscreen infinitely more effective. Â Unfolded, VERY GOOD.

WARHOL, Andy
Institute of Contemporary Art, 1965. First Edition. Original folded poster invitation; 3 3/4" x 9" folded and 22 3/4" x 22 1/2" open. Bit of toning, soil to one edge and a couple of tiny nicks. Very good plus to near fine. Very good +. Famed Green Stamp poster/invitation for Warhol's first retrospective, held at the University of Pennsylvania's Institute of Contemporary Art from October 8th through November 21st, 1965. An infamous event: curator Sam Green issued so many of these invitations that the venue was mobbed. Arthur Danto, in his recent biography of Warhol, described the scene: "There was a crowd of at least two thousand rapturous persons, most of them students. No one had expected a crowd that large, and the curator, Sam Green, to be prudent, removed most of the paintings from the walls, leaving the gallery all but bare. But the crowd had not come so much to look at the art as to see Warhol and his consort. Chants of 'Andy and Edie [Sedgwick]! Andy and Edie!' went up. People were jostled and trampled. It became a problem of crowd control much like what was happening at rock concerts. Andy, Edie, and their party [which included Green] found safety on an iron staircase, where [...] they waved at the crowds below. Finally a hole was axed in the ceiling, and [they] were able to escape to the floor above. Crowd behavior like that [...] was unheard of at art events [...] The change did not escape Warhol's notice. 'To think of it happening at an art opening,' he said. 'Even a Pop Art opening. But then, we weren't just at the art exhibit - we were the exhibit.'" (5). A cor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Watson, James D
W.A. Benjamin, Inc, New York, 1965. First edition of the Nobel Prize-winning scientist's first book. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers as issued. Signed "J.D. Watson" on the title page (as his custom with this book, as that is how it appears on the title page). Editor's foreword by Cyrus Levinthal. In very good condition. Uncommon signed. Written three years before Watson's capstone, The Double Helix, The Molecular Biology of the Gene set a new standard for textbooks, particularly through the use of concept heads-brief declarative subheadings. Watson provided a historical basis for molecular biology, concise descriptions of fundamental chemical concepts, and a discussion of standard techniques and model organisms commonly used in molecular biology studies. The Molecular Biology of the Gene can be seen as Watson laying groundwork for what would culminate with the publication of The Double Helix. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
