[Paint Company Trade Catalogue].
(n. p.): National Lead Company, (n. d.). 1st printing, ca 1965. 56 pp. Pasted-down and tipped in color illustrations. Elephant folio. 21" x 15". Red & black heavy boards with screw post binding. Individualized firm name on cover: General Appliance and Hardware. Light wear to binding, faint foxing at bottom edge of supplement page. A VG example. Item #39017 The Dutch Boy Paint Company, originally founded in 1907 by the National Lead Company, used this album to advertise and promote their line of products in stores where paint products were sold. Beneath every bright and cheerful illustration are specifics on paint shades, tones, color schemes and texture blending, and details on decorating techniques for dream homes. American advertising had mastered the art of selling "lifestyle" by the 1960s and this album depicts suburban living at its finest moment. Illustrations are taken directly from aricles in "Better Homes and Gardens" and "American Home". Many of the pictures are large enough to see fascinating period details of kitchenware, appliances, furniture, art, and decorative objects on sideboards and coffee tables. Most scenes are photographs but many illustrations are artists' renderings. The chatty text discusses ways to glamorize brick, update an old-fashioned white bathroom, use practical colors in areas such as "the lanai", decorate bedroom walls "to please youngsters", and create visually soothing tones in restful rooms. Exterior color is also promoted in artful ways. In many examples jauntily clad people are busy in their lovely homes cooking or arranging flowers, w … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAGRITTE René
Bruxelles: MAGRITTE René. Handwritten letter, signed with his initials Brussels 9 January 1965, 13,5 x 20,5 cm, two pages on one leaf Significant letter written by Rene Magritte to Andre Bosmans, dated 9 January 1965 and signed with his initials. 35 lines in black ink on one leaf with the heading "Rene Magritte 97, rue des Mimosas, Bruxelles 3 Telephone 15.07.30". Several words crossed out and passages underlined. Published in the Lettres à Andre Bosmans 1958-1967, Seghers I. Brachot, 1990, pp. 407-408A letter that is both comical and of great philosophical depth, in which the Surrealist painter Rene Magritte tackles the question of the imagination and inspiration. In it there is a very pertinent analysis of the issues of aesthetics and of modern thinking, while the painter is seeking inspiration to produce the cover of the next XXe siecle, an avant-garde artistic and literary journal (issue XXV, June 1965). Magritte addresses this letter to his great friend Andre Bosmans, a school teacher, poet and editor-in-chief of Rhetorique, a literary journal to which Magritte actively contributed. The painter, then in full mastery of his art, enjoyed international recognition since the beginning of the 1960s. His work has already been the object of numerous retrospectives in France and in Belgium, and will be celebrated on the other side of the Atlantic several months later at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His letter is divided between humour and psychological reflection. Magritte's usual taste for irony is present: "Here is the extract from the newspaper La Meuse. The serious … [Click Below for Full Description]

Spelling, Aaron (executive producer); Gloria and Forrest E.
Four Star Productions. Vintage photographic title cards and title design sketches for the seminal 1965 television series, notable for having utilized these photographs rather than filmed performances for its title sequence. Included are ten double weight photographs, several signed by the series' star, Anne Francis, and four title design sketches that were ultimately made into overlays ("Starring Anne Francis," "Honey West" in two different styles, etc.) The title sequence was originally designed by Format Productions, Inc., the company responsible for the title sequence in "I Spy", "Hee Haw", and other notable television shows of the 1960s and 1970s. The photographs include several shots of Francis, both in action and posed for danger, some with cutout photo overlays, whiteout, etc., to achieve the look needed for the title sequence. Also present are two photos of John Ericson (Honey's assistant Sam Bolt), and one kaleidoscopic shot of a criminal in sunglasses who is laughing maniacally. One photograph, shot and sized differently than the others, is the striking photo of Honey West's pet ocelot Bruce, the image that ends the show's title sequence. The first American television program to star a female private detective, based on the novels by Gloria and Forrest Fickling, and conceived by Aaron Spelling after seeing the success of Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) as a female crime buster in the British series "The Avengers," but with the female character fully up front rather than part of an ensemble. After being turned down by Honor Blackman (who had at the time wowed audiences as P … [Click Below for Full Description]

1965. This is a signed copy of Cold Dogs in the Courtyard. This was Bukowski's 10th book, but it was published years before Black Sparrow Press came along. This book of poems was published in 1965 by Literary Times / Cyfoeth Publications, Chicago. Only 500 copies were ever printed and no signed copies were available from the publisher. This copy appears to have been signed many years later by Bukowski. This rare chapbook brings together 13 poems that first appeared in separate issues of 11 small press journals. This is the only book in which Bukowski chose his own poems. Although they eventually were published in magazines prior to the book, in his intro Bukowski claims the poems were all rejected prior to being published - hence the name, "Cold Dogs in the Courtyard." He actually goes on to list the editors who rejected them - all publishers of his previous books. These early poems include: • What Seems To Be The Trouble, Gentlemen? - pg. 5 - circa 1962 • Imbecile Night - pg. 6 - circa 1962 • To A Lady Who Believes Me Dead - pg. 8 - circa 1962 • Thank God For Alleys - pg. 9 • Experience - pg. 10 - circa 1963 • The Death Of A Roach - pg. 12 - circa 1959 • It's Nothing To Laugh About - pg. 14 - circa 1960 • Suicide - pg. 16 - circa 1961 • Face While Shaving - pg. 17 - circa 1961 • Existence - pg. 18 - circa 1963 • I Have Lived In England - pg. 20 - circa 1961 • 2 Outside, As Bones Break In My Kitchen - pg. 21 - circa 1962 • Layover - pg. 22 - circa 1956 I'll grade this copy as near fine, although it's much closer to fine. There is a small light red stain under Bukowski's pho … [Click Below for Full Description]

FILM] RUBIN, Barbara
S.i., N.p, 1965. Mimeographed script for one of Rubin's unrealized projects, a sequel to her 1963 film Christmas on Earth. The 29-minute 16mm film, originally titled Cocks and Cunts, was shot when Rubin was only 18, using two cameras and featuring a variety of masked and painted performers engaging in both heterosexual and homosexual acts. The script for her unfilmed sequel features settings in heaven and in the New Jerusalem, with a cast of characters including God, Santa Claus, Biblical figures, fairy tale characters, and a variety of literary, cartoon, and comic book superheros. Her list of "Desired States and Heros / Heroines" is a veritable who's-who of sixties literary, film, and musical royalty. Barbara Rubin (1945-1980), in addition to her talents as a filmmaker and performance artist, was arguably among the best-connected individuals in New York's counterculture scene. Scarce; OCLC notes 4 holdings (UC Berkeley, Indiana, Washington University, New Mexico State). Cieciorka, Frank
(N.-pl.): Frank Cieciorka, 1965. 4 by 5 inches. Woodcut of a fist, an image which became one of the iconic symbols of 1960s and 1970s activism. According to the New York Times obituary of Cieciorka (1939-2008), his "woodcut rendering of a clenched-fist salute was a model for the New Left's most ubiquitous emblem." It was used, often with little or no modification, by the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the Black Panthers. A more stylized version, drawn by Cieciorka for an anti-draft rally, was also widely disseminated. More recently, Occupy Oakland adopted his original woodcut version. Cieciorka participated in many 1960s movements, first as a volunteer during the Freedom Summer, then with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, then with the Black Panthers. He designed flyers, posters, and pamphlets for all of them. He made the woodcut of the fist--which he called "Hand"--in 1965. Rare: The Oakland Museum of California has a 1966 screenprint version. A copy was exhibited at St. Mary's College in a show called California in Relief: "Just around a corner panel in the exhibit is a 1965 woodcut modestly titled "Hand" by Frank Cieciorka, who was working with voting rights activists in that era. It is so basic, just a fist, a print not much larger than 2-by-3-inches. Yet it was one of the precursors of the fists on buttons, T-shirts and posters that launched decades of social and political activism. Among the scores of prints on display, it most depicts the power of simplicity."--Robert Taylor. A fine copy, titled, signed, and dated in pencil. This is on … [Click Below for Full Description]
