Frank Herbert
fine in near fine dj. Frank Herbert (1965) 'Dune', US first edition, first printing, published by Chilton Company. This is a rare review copy (no physical difference to the true first edition) which was sent ahead of publication (1 October 1965) to selected booksellers. The original review slip is loosely laid in. The book is unread and in breathtaking condition. Housed in a clamshell case with Dune design protecting the book perfectly. Condition details: A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket for the harshest of judges with a bear minimum of shelf wear. There are no prevoius owners' names, no inscriptions, no bookplates, not stamps etc. Internally clean and spotless. The boards are tight and clean, with no bumps, no lean. Very slight discoluration to the boards' edges. The page block edges are white and NOT foxed. The dust jacket is original and UNRESTORED. It is the correct first issue wrapper with the USD 5.95 price and four lines of publisher information on the bottom rear flap. There is a little of edge wear (a little rubbing), but no tears. Perhaps a slight fade on the spine of the jacket hard to capture on camera. The dust jacket is so thin and fragile as dust jackets in the 1960s were so that very few specimen will be found in better condition than our example. The publication history of 'Dune' has become legendary. After researching sand dunes in Oregon Herbert got the idea to write the story. The novel was serialised in ANALOG magazine from Decmber 1963 onwards as 'Dune World' and 'Prophet of Dune'. After 23 rejections by established publishers, Chilton Company, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Octavo, original boards. Signed by V.S. Naipaul on the title page. Book Condition: Very Good with spine lean. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine in archival protective cover. Trinidadian essayist and novelist V.S. Naipaul has won both the 1971 Booker Prize and the 2001 Nobel Prize in Literature. "The world Naipaul sees is of course no void at all: it is a world dense with physical and social phenomena, brutally alive with the complications and contradictions of actual human endeavour. This world of Naipaul's is in fact charged with what can only be described as a romantic view of reality, an almost unbearable tension between the idea and the physical fact." HALSELL, Grace and John A. Kenney Jr.
[no place: , no date], 1965. [no place, no date]. Unbound. Very Good. A collection of two books, four loose photographs, two framed photographs, and two inscribed novels written by Grace Halsell kept by the African-American dermatologist who helped disguise Halsell for her investigation into African-American culture in the book *Soul Sister.* The photographs are about fine with some light edge wear, the books are fine with very good dustwrappers with fading alone the spine and small creases. An archive containing two books written by Grace Halsell, *Soul Sister* and *Black White Sex* as well as family photographs belonging to John A. "Jack" Kenney Junior. Halsell was an American journalist and writer that at one time worked as a White House speech writer for President Lyndon B. Johnson from 1965 to 1968. She wrote ten books, including her most notable novel, *Soul Sister* which is included in this archive and has been signed and inscribed to Kenney Jr., an African-American dermatologist who helped Halsell go undercover as a black woman for the novel. Halsell during her life disguised herself as an African-American, Hispanic, Indian, and as an indigent laborer to firsthand live the experiences of racial prejudice people of color faced every day, "I wanted only to open my mind, my eyes, my pores to the dilemma of race in America, and to share those experiences without making claims to the discovery of fresh truths about ourselves... I was cast in a twin, paradoxical role of oppressor and oppressed". For her part in *Soul Sister*, Kinney helped Halsell change the color of h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tibor de Nagy Editions, 1965. First Edition. Wraps. Square 8vo. Perfect-bound wraps. 30pp. Rear hinge starting. Light edgewear. Toning to spine; traces of soil to front panel with heavier soiling and spotting to rear panel. Gift inscription penned to title page verso. Very good. From an edition of 500 copies. The final book by O'Hara published during his lifetime, following LUNCH POEMS. Edited John Bernard Myers writes of the publication: "I waited for these poems for three or four years ... When [Frank] did give them to me I couldn't induce him to arrange them in their proper sequence nor give me a title. I wrote 'Love Poems (Tentative Title' on the first page, then arranged them so that the sequence would show the beginning of a new love, its middle period of floundering, the collapse of the affair with its attendant sadness and regret. Frank liked the arrangement and my 'tentative' title. And that was that." [Smith A9]. [Attributes: First Edition]

Mutambala, G, editor
Congo [but Belgium?]: UJRC, 1965-1967. Quartos (ca. 28 × 22 cm). Publisher's decorative staple-stitched self-wrappers; ca. 30-50 pp. per issue. Portraits and photo-illustrations throughout. Very good. [Congolese Anti-Imperialist Rebel Journal, not in Worldcat]. A significant run (seven of twelve issues published) of a left-wing anti-imperialist Congolese rebel journal, published during the second Congolese struggle for independence (1964-1968), a series of insurrections led by former members of Patrice Lumumba's government, such as Piere Mulele, who turned to China for support after being rejected by the Soviet Union. The journal was published by the underground organization "Congolese Revolutionary Youth Union" (UJRC), formed by a group of Congolese diaspora students, with sponsorship from the pro-Chinese faction of the splintered Belgian Communist Party. The issues are filled with reportages and photographs of the atrocities committed by Belgian mercenary armies against the insurgents and the local population. Articles also focus on socialism in Albania, Vietnam and China, as well as student activism in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Korea. Another common feature are excerpts from letters of Congolese students in remote locations like Berlin or Moscow, eager to express their support for the insurrection from abroad. As described by Pedro Monaville: "UJRC allowed a political generation of young Congolese to imagine themselves as part of a nationalist armed insurrection and embrace a leftward trajectory. L'éclair was the main vehicle for this work of imagination. It crea … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hafen, Leroy R.
Arthur H. Clark Company, 1965. Leroy R Hafen / Mountain Men and the Fur Trade of the Far West biographical Complete set of 10 volumes. Please see photos for condition- bindings are tight and pages do not appear to be loose. There are no rips or tears on any of the pages. On a couple of the books the library's name so written on the bottom. These are former library books so they do have a sticker on the inside from cover of each one. Shipped with USPS Media Mail. Description: Mountain Men were the principal figures of the fur trade era, one of the most interesting, dramatic, and truly significant phases of the history of the American trans-Mississippi West during the first half of the 19th Century. These men were of all types―some were fugitives from law and civilization, others were the best in rugged manhood; some were heroic, some brutal, most were adventurous, and many were picturesque. The typical trapper was a young man―strong hardy and adventure loving. Having succumbed to the lure of the wilderness, his thin veneer of civilization soon rubbed off. In the wilds he had little need for money―barter supplied his simple wants. Possibly short on book-learning, he could read moccasin tracks, beaver sign, and trace of the travois. Memorials to them cover the West. Mountain peaks, passes, rivers and lakes carry their names. Towns and counties have been christened in their honor. Their trails have become our highways―their campfire ashes, our cities.

Sylvia Plath
London, England: Faber and Faber, 1965. I am pleased to offer this amazing true first edition of "ARIEL Poems by Sylvia Plath." Published in 1965 by Faber and Faber, this British edition is the true first edition and first printing of this incredible collection of 40 poems by this celebrated and tragic American poet (then living in London), written shortly before her death by suicide. In addition to being a treasure to cherish, this book will only go up in value over time. Faber and Faber, London, 1965. Hardcover. Octavo. 86 pages. Condition of hardcover: Near fine. Dust jacket condition: Good to very good. First edition. first printing of the first British edition, which preceded the American edition by one year. Original red cloth hardcover in dust jacket. Hardcover has a one-half inch light brown superficial stain at top of page block near the spine that does NOT extend downward into the pages (see photo 5). Very slightly bumped top front cover corners. Just a couple spots of foxing to front endpaper. Binding is tight and book appears unread. Very clean and neat throughout all pages. Gold gilt title on spine is totally intact. No handwriting or any other marks on pages.
