Johnson, Phyllis (ed)
NY: Roaring Fork Press, 1965-71. Complete run from an original subscriber with all issues complete as called for [no item number 13 was issued for #10]. All the boxes have some light wear and scattered foxing [heaviest on the side of 5/6], small nick to the top of #2, the envelope for 6a is heavily chipped, but all of the contents are present. What started as a multimedia magazine produced to highlight the cultural and recreational offerings of Aspen Colorado took on a life of its own starting with issue three designed by Andy Warhol and David Dalton to resemble a box of Fab laundry detergent. From this point on, the magazine became an experimental artists' magazine ranging in theme from Minimalism to the Far East, all following the usual format of containing a multitude of items that included, flexi discs, pamphlets, and super eight films among other items. Charles Bukowski
New Orleans: Loujon Press Lyle Stuart, Inc, 1965. Condition: Fine / Signed. One of the scarcest of all Charles Bukowski limitations, #7 OF THE FIRST 10 ORIGINAL COPIES ISSUED BY LOUJON PRESS -- ALL 10 WITH A LETTER BY BUKOWSKI PASTED-IN BETWEEN THE SIGNATURE LEAF AND THE LIMITATION LEAF. AT THE TOP OF THE LIMITATION PAGE, JON WEBB (THE PRINTER, DESIGNER AND INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS REMARKABLE BOOK) HAS WRITTEN IN HIS HAND (IN RED PENCIL): "# Seven --of 10 copies with letter-- with white cover-- Jon Webb". The incredible 2 pg. letter, dated 1964 and very personal and detailed, clearly was written by Bukowski to Jon and Gypsy Lou Webb in anticipaption of this book. The letter is something of a fore-runner to his Black Sparrow "painted" books, showing large, angry strokes of paint (and/or magic marker) and it expresses, among other things, his worry that he won't have enough quality poems to do justice to as ambitious and attractive a book as "Crucifix in a Deathhand". (Presumably, Jon and Gypsy Lou made up their limitation of 10 copies with letters from Bukowski discussing "Crucifix in a Deathhand" while the idea was still in its infancy). And apart from the rarity of this limitation, this is a gorgeous, Near Fine to Fine copy, genuinely bordering on pristine. Tall quarto, internally immaculate, all the hues from the bright, multi-colored pages are vivid and completely unfaded. A major highspot in Bukowski collectibles and certainly one of the rarest obtainable copies of the first serious attempt to make an artistic, physically beautiful book out of a collection of Charles Buk … [Click Below for Full Description]

McPhee, John
New York: Farrar , Straus and Giroux, 1965. First Edition. Hardcover. Association copy inscribed by Bill Bradley with two handwritten letters by John McPhee. Fine in an about near fine jacket, unclipped ($3.75), faded on the spine, lightly rubbed on the back panel. Black cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Square and firmly bound, clean and seemingly unread. A unique copy warmly inscribed on the title page by Bill Bradley to Peter Briggs, an accomplished educator who served as the headmaster at a number of prep schools. McPhee acknowledges that fact in his letter, written on Princeton University letterhead, addressed to Payson Stewart Briggs. McPhee writes in part that Payson was "born very close to the time when I was a visiting writer at Western Reserve Academy and your father was headmaster there." This connection betwen McPhee and Peter Briggs explains the second handwritten letter by McPhee. Written on a folded 8.5x11" piece of paper, McPhee addresses Peter Briggs and writes, "Two of my nephews, now 47 and 55, went to The Potomac school. I hope this inscription is what you had in mind. Sandy sends his best wishes to you. Regards, John." It appears that Peter Briggs sent this copy to John McPhee so McPhee could get it inscribed by Bill Bradley. Perhaps it was Briggs cashing in on a favor earned years ago at the Western Reserve Academy. Regardless, a one-of-a-kind copy of McPhee's debut. Fine / near fine. Item #1520. John McPhee
New York: Farrar , Straus and Giroux. Condition: Very Good + / Near Fine. A tight, very sharp copy of the 1965 stated 1st printing. Clean and VG+ (very light spotting at the panels, tiny indentations to the preliminaries) in a crisp, price-intact ("$3.75"), unusually nice example of the pictorial dustjacket, with no fading whatsover along the spine. The orange, which almost invariably fades at least to some degree, in this case is as strong and vibrant as the day the book was published and the dustjacket overall, which shows just a touch of rubbing to the front tips and the slightest bit of creasing at the spine crown, easily merits a Near Fine. 12mo, a very impressive copy of McPhee's seminal first book, in a remarkably bright dustjacket. John MCPHEE
New York: Farrar , Straus and Giroux, 1965. Condition: Good + / good. Signed. 12mo, 144pp. A good or better copy, somewhat shaken and gently cocked, with previous owner's name on the front paste-down (concealed by the jacket flap). Minor stain on the fore-edge. In a good only dust jacket with some rubbing and scuffing, and notable chips at and near the spine heads. Price-clipped. Despite its noted flaws, a desirable copy, SIGNED by Bill Bradley, the subject of the book, on the front free endpaper: "For Drew, Bill Bradley." While this book can be found signed by McPhee with little difficulty, Bradley signatures are less common. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

PHOTOGRAPHY: INDUSTRIAL)
[Oakland], [ca. 1965]. Three original spiral bound albums filled with construction photographs of the stadium for the Golden State Warriors. The first album is the largest (11 x 8 1/2 inches) and it bears 36 large (9 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches) construction photographs of the stadium. Mounted on rectos only. The next two albums use silver gelatin photographs of the same size but they are not mounted on sheets but are glued back to back. One album has 30 photographs and the other 32 (in this album the plastic spiral had become a bit broken but the album is still tight and whole). No photographer's credits and no printing of any kind. The reason for the creation of these albums is not clear as they were not used for publicity or advertising. Perhaps the construction company had them made for their archives. In any case, the photographer was very skilled and the images sharp. The Oracle Arena is an indoor arena located in Oakland, California, United States, and is the home of the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The arena opened in 1966 and is the oldest arena in the NBA. From its opening until 1996 it was known as the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena. After a major renovation completed in 1997, the arena was renamed The Arena in Oakland until 2005 and Oakland Arena from 2005 to 2006. It is often referred to as the Oakland Coliseum Arena as it is located adjacent to the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Oracle Arena seats 19,596 fans for basketball and 17,200 for ice hockey. Early in 2013, the Warriors announced they would build a new arena in … [Click Below for Full Description]

James Leo Herlihy
Simon & Schuster, 1965. See item description. 6" x 8.5", 253 page hardcover with dustjacket titled MIDNIGHT COWBOY by James Leo Herlihy/ Simon & Scuster, First printing, copyright 1965/ Midnight Cowboy is a 1965 novel by James Leo Herlihy that chronicles the naïve Texan Joe Buck's odyssey from Texas to New York City, where he plans on realizing his dream of becoming a male prostitute servicing rich women. In 1969, the novel was made into the movie Midnight Cowboy starring Dustin Hoffman as Ratso and Jon Voight as Joe. The film, by director John Schlesinger, succeeded commercially and critically, winning three Academy Awards: Academy Award for Best Picture, Academy Award for Best Director and Academy Award for Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay). Both Hoffman and Voight received nominations as Academy Award for Best Actor, but lost out to John Wayne in True Grit. Schlesinger explained the great success of the film as its exploration of loneliness. The movie, which was adapted by screenwriter Waldo Salt, was not entirely faithful to the book, omitting or altering some aspects of Joe's early life. The book is complete and in VERY GOOD - FINE condition with some overall wear that includes some light scratches on the dustjacket. The spine is slightly tilted and the bottom and top edges of the cover boards have some rubbing. On the front free endpaper, the author has signed and dated in blue ink, "James Leo Herlihy, Dallas - Oct. 6, 1965". From the estate of an avid book collector in Austin, Texas.
