Johnson, Lyndon
1965. Johnson, Lyndon Baines [1908-1973]. [Goldberg, Arthur (1908-1990)]. [Photograph of Johnson Inscribed to Goldberg]. N.p., N.d. (1965?). 8" x 10" color portrait photograph, printed credit in the image at bottom left, glazed and framed in tasteful black-and-gold wooden 16" x 19" frame. Bold inscription and full signature below image. A few tiny nicks to frame, image fine. * The (undated) inscription reads "To Arthur Goldberg-/ With the high regard and affection/ of his friend-/ Lyndon B. Johnson." Appointed by President Kennedy, Goldberg was an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1962 to 1965 and one of the most significant justices of the twentieth century. In his three terms on the bench he pushed the Court toward a broader construction of personal rights, a course it followed over the following two decades. He is best known for his influential 1963 internal Supreme Court memorandum that condemned capital punishment as an example of "cruel and unusual punishment," as defined by the Eighth Amendment, and his opinion in Griswold v. Connecticut (1965), which argued against a Connecticut law banning the use of contraceptives because it violated an un-enumerated right to privacy guaranteed by the Ninth Amendment. The memo initiated a wave of litigation and legislation that led to the abolition of the death penalty in several states; the Griswold opinion laid the foundation for Roe v. Wade (1973), which established a women's right to have an abortion. When Adlai Stevenson, Ambassador to the United Nations, died in 1965 President Johnson decided to appoint Goldbe … [Click Below for Full Description]

HERLIHY, James Leo
New York: Simon and Schuster,, 1965. New York: Simon and Schuster,, 1965. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a quarter black morocco and yellow cloth slipcase. Lightly rubbed at extremities, spine a little rolled. An excellent copy in the jacket that is just a little rubbed along the edges with a small blue mark at the tail of the spine. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to his close friend and literary mentor Tennessee Williams, "For Tennessee – with all my affection and admiration always – Jimmy. May 14, 1965, New York". Herlihy met Williams in Key West, where they were both part of a circle of gay writers during the 1950s and 60s. As he told Lynn Kaufelt, founder of the Key West Literary Seminary, "'Before Tennessee had a pool installed, he and I went swimming off the Monroe County pier nearly every summer day at twilight… it was inexpressibly comforting to have the daily company of a kindred spirit; just knowing we were involved in the same sort of lunatic pursuit provided some essential ground that meant everything to me'… As late as 1976, when Herlihy's mother died of cancer, Williams was there for him. Herlihy wrote Paul Bowles that year that he spent three months in Key West with his dying mother: 'Tennessee was in Key West during much of that time, and he was enormously considerate. Sent flowers, messages. Cooked for me. Even showed up at the funeral mass, volunteering to act as pallbearer. I was impressed and moved … [Click Below for Full Description]

ANDERSON, Robert.
First edition, exceptionally rare, of the first English book on rocketry and the first book to propose the use of metal rocket casings. This development, which enabled the thrust of the rocket to be greatly increased, was principally responsible for the subsequent use of rockets as major weapons of war, and in the twentieth century for space exploration. Only one other copy has appeared at auction for more than a century.

❧Norman 54; Macclesfield 3328 (this copy); ESTC R1638.

This is an extremely rare book. ESTC lists Glasgow and BL only, and the only other copy in auction records is the Andrade-Norman copy. The catalogue of the Andrade sale (Sotheby's, 12 July 1965) states (lot 16): "There is no record of the sale by auction in England of this work since the beginning of BAR" (i.e. British Auction Records, which began in 1903). The present copy must have entered the Macclesfield library via John Collins, with whom Anderson was associated, as noted below. Although this copy has some cropping, it is actually slightly taller than the Andrade-Norman copy, and is unrestored (the Andrade-Norman copy was rebacked).

Anderson states clearly that his purpose is "To raise so great a heap of Fire, and to confirm the Fact by ... Experiments and Demonstrations Mathematical" (A2v). To that end, the present work includes instructions for the construction of rockets of various sizes and types, including rockets that "swim upon the water." "Anderson was important in bringing ballistics into the sphere of mathematics and demonstrating the usefulness of … [Click Below for Full Description]

HERBERT, FRANK
Philadelphia: Chilton Books, (1965). First edition. Herbert's best-known novel was awarded the first Nebula Award in 1965, shared a Hugo Award in 1966, and was the basis for the film by David Lynch. Regarded as one of the most popular science fiction novels of all time, Dune is a vast, complex story incorporating elements of "hard" science fiction, fantasy, mythology, religion and politics, and set on an exotic planet, the flora and fauna of which are fully realized and described. The combination of its size and popularity, coupled with its having been published by a house better known for its automobile repair manuals, have made this book rather difficult to obtain in fine condition. This is a nearly fine copy in pale blue cloth with heavy gray textured endpapers. The first issue dust jacket, with $5.95 price intact and four-line publisher's information on rear flap, shows only slight rubbing to corners and a few tiny nicks to extremities.

Motherwell, Robert
New York: Hollander Workshop, 1965. First Edition. Fine. Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) writes in the introduction to the set that he was inspired to do this series by his honeymoon in Madrid in 1958 with his then-wife, the artist Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011). The texture of the plaster walls in their hotel presented an interesting surface on which to draw, making the lines appear like dots and reminiscent of Seurat. In creating this series, inspired by his time in Madrid, Motherwell was able to reproduce the feel of those drawings by using Hollander's plaster walls in the same way, drawing on lithographic transfer paper. An extremely rare edition of Motherwell's work, the lithographs were often broken up and sold individually. An important piece by the man who came up with the title "The New York School" which referred not only to him, but fellow abstract expressionist painters Philip Guston, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. [11] pp. Elephant Folio. Housed in custom brown linen folio with title pasted to front panel with Motherwell's name and initials also blind embossed to center of label. Interleaved with tissue; all lithographs, tissues, and folio case in pristine condition. Suite consists of ten (10) black & white lithographs printed on white Arches paper measuring 22" x 30". This is edition #31 of 100. Each lithograph is signed and numbered by Motherwell and includes the blind embossed logo of Irwin Hollander (the master-printer) in the lower right corner.

John Lennon
Cape, UK 1965 - 1st Edition 1965. A lovely example of Lennon's second book with his autograph/signed name to the endpaper. Very rare book to be signed and un-dedicated. John Lennon's autograph at the height of Beatle mania was very difficult to obtain. His previous book 'In His Own Write' had a signing session at Foyles in 1964 so the book appears more regular albeit as a reprint. He did not undertake any such commercial signing sessions for this book so they very rarely appear on the open market. Excellent provenance will be made available when purchased. Book is near fine and in lovely square tight condition. Nice sharp corners. A few very light foxing spots to odd pages. Pages very nice and clean. Never issued with a wrapper. A cracking example. Yasuzo Noiima
Tokyo: The Committee for the Publication of Yasuzo Nojima\'s Posthumous Works, 1965. Hardcover. Near Fine. This is a rare first edition, first printing of the highly influential photobook \"Yasuzo Nojima: Posthumous Works\" self published in 1965 and edited by The Committee for the Publication of Yasuzo Nojima\'s Posthumous Works. Yasuzo Nojima is considered one of the most important and influential photographers in the history of modern Japanese photography. In a 1999 essay, the noted photography critic Richard Phillips wrote, \"In the late 1920s Nojima\'s work began to change from mannered pictorialism to simple, subtly lit and seductive portraits and nude shots to produce some of the most enigmatic images seen in pre-World War II Japan. The Japanese word for photography is shanshin, means to \"reproduce reality\". Nojima\'s images transcend the mechanical reproduction of reality and uncover truths not seen or understood by previous Japanese photographers. Against the convention of mainly using western women or celebrities as models, Nojima chose unglamorous, earthy Japanese women for his portraits. The carefully composed but simple images reject the overblown flattery of the pictorialists and attempt to unlock the inner soul of the subject. In a notebook entry, titled \"Fictions and True Stories\", Nojima, wrote, \"What they call art photography is nothing more than a catalog of the absentminded, the vague, the falsely significant or deep, the diluted, and the weak. They are therefore not the qualities the age demands.\" Ryuichi Kaneko and Ivan Vartanian in their refer … [Click Below for Full Description]

(n. p.):: National Lead Company,. (n. d.).. Elephant folio. 21" x 15". 1st printing, ca 1965. 56 pp.. Red & black heavy boards with screw post binding. Individualized firm name on cover: General Appliance and Hardware.. Light wear to binding, faint foxing at bottom edge of supplement. page. A VG example.. The Dutch Boy Paint Company, originally founded in 1907 by the National Lead Company, used this album to advertise and promote their line of products in stores where paint products were sold. Beneath every bright and cheerful illustration are specifics on paint shades, tones, color schemes and texture blending, and details on decorating techniques for dream homes. American advertising had mastered the art of selling "lifestyle" by the 1960s and this album depicts suburban living at its finest moment. Illustrations are taken directly from aricles in "Better Homes and Gardens" and "American Home". Many of the pictures are large enough to see fascinating period details of kitchenware, appliances, furniture, art, and decorative objects on sideboards and coffee tables. Most scenes are photographs but many illustrations are artists' renderings. The chatty text discusses ways to glamorize brick, update an old-fashioned white bathroom, use practical colors in areas such as "the lanai", decorate bedroom walls "to please youngsters", and create visually soothing tones in restful rooms. Exterior color is also promoted in artful ways. In many examples jauntily clad people are busy in their lovely homes cooking or arranging flowers, watching television or sitting neatly in their co … [Click Below for Full Description]

Heaney, Seamus
Belfast: Festival Publications, 1965. Soft Cover. 1st Edition. Near Fine. First edition, first issue, with a nine-pointed purple sun illustration to the front cover, printed on laid watermarked paper. Original publisher's wrappers. An excellent copy, with a short closed tear to the spine head, light creasing to the front wrapper, some minor soiling to the wrappers, light pencil marking to the first poem, otherwise bright and clean pages. Overall, a near fine copy of an extremely scarce title, the author's first printed publication. Brandes & Durkan A1a. Housed in a custom box. Eleven Poems is Heaney's first published book of poetry, published privately by Festival Publications at the Queen's University of Belfast in Northern Ireland. Heaney attended Queen's University of Belfast as an undergraduate and graduate student, where he studied English literature and wrote poetry. After graduating, Heaney became associated with a group of young Belfast poets known as "The Group," an organization assembled by Queen's University lecturer Philip Hobsbaum. During this time, Heaney's poetry was being published by The Belfast Telegraph and The Irish Times. Fittingly, Heaney, who would come to be hailed as the greatest Irish poet since Yeats, and whose poetry is given "its distinctive strength" by "the acute observation of the [Irish] countryside and its people," released his first collection locally. Eleven Poems advertises the 1966 publication of Heaney's first major work Death of Naturalist by Faber and Faber, which would begin Heaney's long career of publishing award-winning poetry. Landa, L A
Oxford Clarenden Press. Hardcover. Dust jacket condition: VG-. Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. Jacket sunned at spine with just a touch of edgewear. SWIFT was an active churchman for more than forty years?and one of unusual prominence. To those who know him primarily in his other roles?literary genius, pamphleteer of Queen Anne's last ministry, and Irish patriot?and merely take for granted his clerical career, the scope and interest of this neglected aspect of his life may come as a surprise. Usiing many new documents and sources, Professor Landa has written a detailed account of Swift as a member of the Irish Establishment. The book relates Swift's rise from obscure cleric to Dean of St. Patrick's, his stormy relations with the Cathedral chapter, his struggle to defend church and clergy against designing prelates and laity.
