FLEMING, Ian
London: Jonathan Cape. 1965,, 1965. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, being one of the rarest regular James Bond titles. The FIRST ISSUE has a 'Gun' gilt-stamped to the upper. 8vo., pp221. Publisher's cloth-effect paper over boards, in pictorial jacket. A very good copy with some dustiness and edgewear, plus a slight lean to the spine. The gilt on the gun is particularly bright (often found spotted or tarnished). A very good copy (slight lean) in similar jacket. Housed in a collector's leather box. The rare 'Gun' cover, which was dropped due to financial reasons after a small number of copies were produced and exported to the Colonies. Spurious copies are known, but first issues can be easily identified as, upon comparison, the initial cloth used has an entirely different pattern to the more common (plain) binding. A legendary James Bond high-spot. Gilbert A13a (1.1).

Heaney, Seamus.
Festival Publications, Belfast 1965 - First edition, third issue. Octavo, original green wrappers as issued. In near fine condition. Signed by Seamus Heaney on the front cover. In 1957, Seamus Heaney travelled to Belfast to study English Language and Literature at Queen's University Belfast. During his time in Belfast, he found a copy of Ted Hughes's Lupercal, which spurred him to write poetry. "Suddenly, the matter of contemporary poetry was the material of my own life," he said. (BBC) He graduated in 1961 with a First Class Honours degree. In 1963, Heaney became a lecturer at St Joseph's and in the spring of 1963, after contributing various articles to local magazines, he came to the attention of Philip Hobsbaum, then an English lecturer at Queen's University. Hobsbaum set up a Belfast Group of local young poets and this would bring Heaney into contact with other Belfast poets such as Derek Mahon and Michael Longley. His first book, Eleven Poems, was published in November 1965 for the Queen's University Festival. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

(n.p.): (Pithekos Press/Bowdoin College). (1965). Unbound, folded and gathered sheets for a fine press limited edition with unattributed text on the "Historical Perspective," "The Indian Portrait," and "The Economic Aspect." With nine full-page unattributed woodcut portrait illustrations, most retaining their tissue guards. According to the colophon, 50 copies were produced, or were to be produced, in May of 1965 and this was the third work of this now-elusive press. 22 leaves. 10-1/2" x 13". Oddly, although not obviously misbound, two of the text pages repeat; else fine. The leaves were laid into a plain brown folder, which is present, but split at the fold and losing its edges. An attractive production, very possibly the prototype for a student fine press edition that was never completed. We can find no record of this title in OCLC nor in the specific catalog of Bowdoin College; nor can we find any listing for any other volume issued by this press. That being said, it is an attractive production: the woodcuts were apparently done by different artists and some are quite striking; the text, which is highly critical of U.S. historical treatment of Native Americans, is an early example of the kind of social criticism that the 1960s became famous for: the Free Speech Movement in Berkeley was taking place in the same academic year this was produced, and it wasn't for another two or three years that widespread criticism of the Vietnam War spilled over into widespread critical reevaluation of the national myths and official histories of the United States. This Bowdoin production … [Click Below for Full Description]

BEARD, Peter Hill
New York: Viking (1965) - First Edition. Quarto. A fine presentation copy, lengthily INSCRIBED by Beard to former Minneapolis Institute of Arts photography curator Christian Petersen. The inscription includes a two-page hand drawing in ball point pen, a small foot print in black ink, and an interesting history of the book's publication, as follows: "Special Delivery / from C.J. Bucher in / Lucerne 1962-1963 / another uphill battle vs Helen K. Taylor / and Bryan Holme [Viking Press retards while / I was still @ school trying to do this book / .(. subsequently delayed three years)." A scrapbook of African images, text, and other musings, culled from Beard's work in Kenya in the early 1960s, and published when the photographer was only 25 years old. Sadly, much of what Beard feared and forecast has come true, adding an uncanny prescience to his apocalyptic title. (Roth 170-171, Open Book 208-209, Auer 448). A few ink smudges to the boards, tiny bump at the spine head, else near fine in a near fine jacket. Meaningful copies of the true first edition of Beard's first and most important book are uncommon. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
