N.p: S.i, 1965. Condition: With a contemporary inscription to Israel Young on verso of terminal leaf: "April 13, 1965 / For Israel Young / Love Barbara." Preliminary and terminal leaves slightly toned, edgeworn, and dust-soiled, with a few faint, scattered stains; terminal leaf showing tears and numerous creases; contents quite fresh; Very Good, complete copy. Quarto (27cm); white sheets (measuring 8" x 10"), mimeographed in green on rectos only, side-stapled; [ii],31pp. Mimeographed script for one of Rubin's unrealized projects, a sequel to her 1963 film Christmas on Earth. The 29-minute 16mm film, originally titled Cocks and Cunts, was shot when Rubin was only 18, using two cameras and featuring a variety of masked and painted performers engaging in both heterosexual and homosexual acts. The script for her unfilmed sequel features settings in heaven and in the New Jerusalem, with a cast of characters including God, Santa Claus, Biblical figures, fairy tale characters, and a variety of literary, cartoon, and comic book superheros. Her list of "Desired States and Heros / Heroines" is a veritable who's-who of sixties literary, film, and musical royalty. Barbara Rubin (1945-1980), in addition to her talents as a filmmaker and performance artist, was arguably among the best-connected individuals in New York's counterculture scene. McPhee, John
New York: Farrar , Straus and Giroux, 1965. First Edition. Hardcover. Association copy inscribed by Bill Bradley with two handwritten letters by John McPhee. Fine in an about near fine jacket, unclipped ($3.75), faded on the spine, lightly rubbed on the back panel. Black cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Square and firmly bound, clean and seemingly unread. A unique copy warmly inscribed on the title page by Bill Bradley to Peter Briggs, an accomplished educator who served as the headmaster at a number of prep schools. McPhee acknowledges that fact in his letter, written on Princeton University letterhead, addressed to Payson Stewart Briggs. McPhee writes in part that Payson was "born very close to the time when I was a visiting writer at Western Reserve Academy and your father was headmaster there." This connection betwen McPhee and Peter Briggs explains the second handwritten letter by McPhee. Written on a folded 8.5x11" piece of paper, McPhee addresses Peter Briggs and writes, "Two of my nephews, now 47 and 55, went to The Potomac school. I hope this inscription is what you had in mind. Sandy sends his best wishes to you. Regards, John." It appears that Peter Briggs sent this copy to John McPhee so McPhee could get it inscribed by Bill Bradley. Perhaps it was Briggs cashing in on a favor earned years ago at the Western Reserve Academy. Regardless, a one-of-a-kind copy of McPhee's debut. Fine / near fine. Item #1520. Zita L. Wright
Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Co, 1965. School library discard with usual pocket and stamps, mylar protected dust jacket with tape stains, pages clean and tight. Pat Doyle, daughter of an iron miner, is proud of the town where she lives, in spite of its mining-town look and its many drab rows of all-the-same houses. She is especially proud of the Ski Club that sponsors a winter carnival, ski races and a tournament, and does not mind a bit that its trails are laid at the end of a cemetery road. At least, not until an ominous series of events began: ice on the toboggan run, stolen skis, a cut towrope, the ransacked club house - these weren't just coincidences, Pat felt, and when after a particularly terrifying experience she saw the "ghost skier," she was sure someone was causing the accidents on purpose.

Toning to spine; traces of soil to front panel with heavier soiling and spotting to rear panel. Gift inscription penned to title page verso. From an edition of 500 copies. When [Frank] did give them to me I couldn't induce him to arrange them in their proper sequence nor give me a title. I wrote 'Love Poems (Tentative Title' on the first page, then arranged them so that the sequence would show the beginning of a new love, its middle period of floundering, the collapse of the affair with its attendant sadness and regret. Frank liked the arrangement and my 'tentative' title. And that was that." [Smith A9]. [Attributes: First Edition]

Peter Hill Beard
The Viking Press : New York. The End of the Game by Peter Beard First Edition, First Printing, 1965 This is a first edition, first printing of Peter Beard's highly photobook "The End of the Game" published by The Viking Press, New York in 1965. Focusing on the widespread destruction of the African elephant, Beard tells of the enterprisers, explorers, missionaries, and big-game hunters whose quests for progress and adventure were to change the face of Africa for ever. David Levi Strauss in "The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century" wrote, "In addition to being singularly beautiful, "The End of the Game" is thoughtful as well. Long taken a seminal book on wildlife conservation, it is actually an epic visual poem on the subject of the loss, especially the ultimate loss of life...The book is philosophical about the rapid despoliation of East African wildlife, especially the elephants. "Death", writes Beard in his introduction, "is the patiently awaited, unfeared fact of delicately poised African life." On its publication in 1965, Beard's book was immediately acclaimed, with not one but two glowing reviews in The New York Times. Featuring 75 black-and-white and color photographic plates along with numerous in-text illustrations and measuring approximately 11" x 9.5", the book is bound in gray cloth covered boards with a photographically illustrated dust jacket. The condition of the book is Near Fine with an ink inscription dedication. A very bright copy of this classic book. The plates are in incredible condition. There is no foxing and the imag … [Click Below for Full Description]

Andy WARHOL
Philadelphia: Institute of Contemporary Art, 1965. Condition: Very good +. Original folded poster invitation; 3 3/4" x 9" folded and 22 3/4" x 22 1/2" open. Bit of toning, soil to one edge and a couple of tiny nicks. Very good plus to near fine. Famed Green Stamp poster/invitation for Warhol's first retrospective, held at the University of Pennsylvania's Institute of Contemporary Art from October 8th through November 21st, 1965. An infamous event: curator Sam Green issued so many of these invitations that the venue was mobbed. Arthur Danto, in his recent biography of Warhol, described the scene: "There was a crowd of at least two thousand rapturous persons, most of them students. No one had expected a crowd that large, and the curator, Sam Green, to be prudent, removed most of the paintings from the walls, leaving the gallery all but bare. But the crowd had not come so much to look at the art as to see Warhol and his consort. Chants of 'Andy and Edie [Sedgwick]! Andy and Edie!' went up. People were jostled and trampled. It became a problem of crowd control much like what was happening at rock concerts. Andy, Edie, and their party [which included Green] found safety on an iron staircase, where [...] they waved at the crowds below. Finally a hole was axed in the ceiling, and [they] were able to escape to the floor above. Crowd behavior like that [...] was unheard of at art events [...] The change did not escape Warhol's notice. 'To think of it happening at an art opening,' he said. 'Even a Pop Art opening. But then, we weren't just at the art exhibit -- we were the exhibit.'" … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dieter Roth
Chicago: William and Noma Copley Foundation, 1965. Decorated folder with loose contents. Dieter's breakthrough artist book and winner of the 1960 William and Noma Copley Foundation Award. Per Dobke, Printing of this "book" was supervised by Richard Hamilton during the period 1961 - 1966 and distributed finally in 1966. In an edition of approximately 1,750 copies, hors commerce. Despite that rather large sounding limitation only one full example found in all of world institutions. Dobke (and others) call for "112 sheets of different sizes (some folded), texts, drawings, photographs, collages, reliefs, letterpress, offset, diecuts, embossing" laid into cardboard cover. This copy with only 31 separate sheets of varying sizes, shapes and colors. Interestingly, the notations to the copy held at Bard College also mention a copy with 30 inserts. We are selling this copy "as-is" Given the open nature of this book, one can only wonder how many copies have survived intact Contents fine. The cardboard folder is in very good condition. Octavo, original boards. Signed by V.S. Naipaul on the title page. Book Condition: Very Good with spine lean. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine in archival protective cover. Trinidadian essayist and novelist V.S. Naipaul has won both the 1971 Booker Prize and the 2001 Nobel Prize in Literature. An Area of Darkness is a travelogue detailing Naipaul's trip through India in the early sixties. "The world Naipaul sees is of course no void at all: it is a world dense with physical and social phenomena, brutally alive with the complications and contradictions of actual human endeavour. This world of Naipaul's is in fact charged with what can only be described as a romantic view of reality, an almost unbearable tension between the idea and the physical fact." (The New York Review of Books). Loosely laid in is the flier from the author reading where the book was signed and a book review of An Area of Darkness from Newsweek in 1965. Collage Art - Plymell, Charles
No Place: No Publisher Dave Haselwood?, 1965. Rare volume of collage art by poet Charles Plymell. One of at least two distinct versions of this magazine. This copy measures 11" wide x 17" tall. 12 leaves including illustrated covers. An enigmatic publication with little info to go by. WorldCat suggests that this work was created in 1965 and published by Dave Haselwood, but no publication info is included with the magazine. A clean near fine example. Collage elements borrow from film, comic books, movie magazines and other sources. We have seen this same title in a smaller (7 1/2 x 11") format with slightly different content. No priority known.
