Lavater, Warja
Adrien Maeght editeur, Paris, 1965. [Click Below for Full Description]

RUSCHA, EDWARD). Ruscha, Edward
Los Angeles: Self-Published, 1965. (RUSCHA, EDWARD). Ruscha, Edward. SOME LOS ANGELES APARTMENTS. Los Angeles: Self-Published, 1965. First Edition 1/700. 12mo. Printed Wrappers with Glassine. Artist's Book. Fine./Near Fine.. np (48pp), 34 b&w illustrations. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Some Los Angeles Apartments" is Ed Ruscha's third artist book - a wry yet heartfelt photographic survey of the subtle beauty of the post-war Southern California rental property construction boom. A spectacularly bright, most handsome example of the uncommon 1965 first edition (entry B3 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999" which is also cited on page 141 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", pages 198-201 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 105 of "From Fair to Fine 2", and page 226 of "From Fair to Fine 3") limited to seven hundred unnumbered copies in the publisher's glassine wrapper showing some typical minor age patination along with a few tiny closed tears along the top edge of the rear panel. All in all, this is an exceptional example of this important little gem that is often confused with the 1990 Whitney Museum exhibition catalogue of virtually the same title. New York, NY: Viking Press, 1965., 1965. FIRST US EDITION, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. Small octavo. Publisher's white cloth with 'Walther' device in black, red endpapers, illustrated jacket by Raymond Hawkey. A lovely fine copy. An unusual piece of Bondiana, rarely seen signed. Bill Tanner is a fictional character in the James Bond novels, who holds the position of MI6 Chief of Staff; Fleming reveals that he is James Bond's closest friend in the service, and he was a regular character in the later continuation series by John Gardner. In 1965, Kingsley Amis wrote 'The Book of Bond' as a tongue-in-cheek manual for prospective secret agents, illustrated with examples from Fleming's novels. For this work, Amis used the pseudonym "Lt. Colonel William ('Bill') Tanner". BMC No.1 p.4-13 'Fleming and Bond; Related Titles'. Ex-Peter Stern of Boston.

ZADEH, LOTFI A.
New York: Academic Press. First edition. original wrappers. Fine. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING of Zadeh's enormously influential foundational paper on "fuzzy set" theory. "Fuzzy sets have a rather brief history. The concept itself, coined by L.A. Zadeh in his seminal paper (1965), has emerged as a fundamental and fresh idea. Fuzzy sets involve capturing, representing, and working with linguistic notions-- objects with unclear boundaries. What has been conveyed by fuzzy sets and formalized in the resulting framework is definitely essential to many human endeavors and permeates many studies on the role of uncertainty…" (Pedrycz and Gomide, An Introduction to Fuzzy Sets). "Most concepts used in everyday language, such as 'high temperature,' 'round face,' or 'aquatic animal,' are not clearly defined. In 1965 Lotfi Zadeh, an engineering professor at the University of California at Berkeley, proposed a mathematical definition of those classes that lack precisely defined criteria of membership. Zadeh called them fuzzy sets. Membership in a fuzzy set may be indicated by any number from 0 to 1, representing a range from 'definitely not in the set' through 'partially in the set' to 'completely in the set'… "In a narrow sense, the term fuzzy logic refers to a system of approximate reasoning, but its widest meaning is usually identified with a mathematical theory of classes with unclear, or 'fuzzy,' boundaries. Control systems based on fuzzy logic are used in many consumer electronic devices in order to make fine adjustments to changes in the environment. Fuzzy logic concepts and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a small chip to the front panel and a closed tear. Mary Oliver was described by The New York Times as "far and away, [America's] best-selling poet." She has won both the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and the National Book Award in 1992. Oliver's poetry has been called an "indefatigable guide to the natural world, particularly to its lesser-known aspects" (Kumin, 1993). "Visionary as Emerson [ she is] among the few American poets who can describe and transmit ecstasy, while retaining a practical awareness of the world as one of predators and prey," reviewed The Nation. Holly Prado of Los Angeles Times Book Review noted that Oliver's work "touches a vitality in the familiar that invests it with a fresh intensity." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

HEANEY, Seamus
Festival Publications, Belfast 1965 - 8vo, 14 pp. unpaginated, stapled paper wrappers. A little light browning to wrappers, otherwise a near fine copy. Purple nine-point star device to front wrapper. First edition, first issue, with the purple nine-point star to front wrapper. The extremely scarce pamphlet which launched the career of a Nobel laureate. Heaney's first publication, comprising many of the poems that would appear in his first collection Death Of A Naturalist the following year. Eleven Poems was privately published by Queen's University -- Heaney's alma mater, and his place of work as a lecturer in Modern English Literature from 1966. It was one in a series of Festival publications drawing attention to the work of the nascent Belfast Group of poets, among them Derek Mahon, Michael Longley, Stewart Parker, and the group's founder Philip Hobsbaum. The book exists in three states: this, the first issue; a second issue (1966) featuring a darker, ten-point star on the front wrapper; and a completely redesigned third issue which appeared in 1967. As well as being the most desirable, the first issue is by far the scarcest. Brandes and Durkan A1(a)
