A fine association for this collection of studies on the origin of life, conducted partly under the auspices of NASA. Dr Homer E. Newell Jr. (1915-1983) was a mathematics professor and author who became a powerful US government science administrator, rising eventually to the third in command of NASA. In the early 1960s he controlled or influenced virtually all non-military unmanned space missions for the free world. He played a significant role in the negotiations which led to the creation of NASA, chairing a committee of rocket and satellite experimenters that drafted a consensus plan for a national space establishment which was presented to Eisenhower's science advisor, and advising the Senate preparedness investigating subcommittee... When the legislation establishing NASA was passed in 1958, Newell was given credit by his peers, including Van Allen, who called him "The Spark Plug" … [Click Below for Full Description]

Burland, Cottie Arthur (1905-1983)
Graz: Akademische Druck- und Verlagsanstalt, 1965 2 parts. Text 24 pages with bibliographical note. Foldout accordion codex. Oblong Quarto (10" x 11") text bound in wrappers housed in a folding slipcase. (Codices Selecti Volume VII) First edition.Egerton 2895 is one of the manuscripts preserve in the British Musuem. Also known as Codex Waecker Gotter, Codex Sanchez Solis and Codice Zapoteco. It was previously published by Penafiel in 1890 in lithograph. This is the first edition of the document which reproduces the pictorial material in its actual state and also the place names. Among the surviving Mixtec codices this document is unique. In no other comparable work do we find a genealogical document in which each of the major pairs in the history occupies a full page. The importance of the codex lies in its written commentary in a native Mexican language, combined with the unusually rich style of painting and the structure of the genealogy which gives primary importance to the female line. The codex is painted on a long strip of prepared deerskin made from sic sections of approximately equal width. The joints between the sheets of leather were held in place by an adhesive white plaster. The general proportion and dimension of the pages are indicative of a Mixtec aesthetic and the resemble several other Mixtec-documents. The codex has two outer covers and are the same kind of leather sheet as the rest of the document. The document is the history of a Mixtec noble family. It covers twenty six generations from the time in which the symbols of power were brought to the Mixtec … [Click Below for Full Description]

AWDRY, The Rev W.
Edmund Ward, U.K. Starting with "The Three Railway Engines" in 1945 and the follow-up "Thomas the Tank Engine" in 1946, the original Railway Series ran to 26 titles written by the Rev Awdry up to 1972. His son Christopher took over and produced a further 16 books between 1983 - 2011. In this eleventh installment the youngest, smallest and cheekiest engine, Percy (first introduced in 1950's "Troublesome Engines"), gets his very own book. Although considered to contain his best work, this was the last in the series to be illustrated by Dalby. The bickering between author and illustrator is well documented, and when the Reverend likened Dalby's portrayal of Percy to "a green caterpillar with red stripes", the artist went off in a huff and never illustrated another anthropomorphic railway engine. First published in 1956, this is the second printing from 1965. This copy is very good, although affected by some light foxing on the first and last few pages, and which is at its worse on the title page. Otherwise an excellent clean copy in a very good, slightly rubbed and worn dust jacket, a little browned on rear panel and with minor nicks and chips to edges. Now for the best bit! The title page carries a lovely example of the very rare signature of the Rev W. (for Wilbert, by the way). Considering the huge number of copies of these Railway books that are at large in the world, signed copies are remarkably hard to find (and bear in mind that many signed copies of the Railway Series are actually signed by Christopher, not papa Wilbert). A scarce and wonderful thing. [Attributes: Sign … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marianne Moore
Four pieces of American twentieth century poet Marianne Moore ephemera: a) TLS from Marianne Moore dated July 8, 1965 to Midwest Quarterly editor Gene de Gruson: "It is kind of you to invite me to send you a poem but a contract restricts me to offering verse to just one magazine; and any writing I do, I seem to get into print with nothing left to find a home for. With her signature. On stationery printed with her 260 Cumberland Street, Brooklyn, New York address where she lived from 1929-1965. This letter thus written the year before she moved to Greenwich Village. Includes typed envelope. Fine. b) Catalogue of exhibition of paintings by artist William Kienbusch held at Krauschaar Galleries, New York Jan 28 to Feb 16, 1963. Descriptive text by Marianne Moore. Toning and light foxing along edges. Very Good. c) An 8 x 10 glossy photograph of Marianne Moore taken in the Phoenix Bookshop in 1967 on the occasion of her 80th birthday by Robert A. Wilson. Signed by Wilson at the bottom right corner of the photograph. The Phoenix Bookshop was a renowned New York bookshop and a centre of literary activity particularly for the Beat poets and the writers of the Black Mountain School. Robert A. Wilson was the third proprietor of the Phoenix and was a renowned author and bibliograp … [Click Below for Full Description]
