Frederick Catherwood, Architect
Barre, MA: Barre Publishers, 1965. Cloth. Fine. Frederick Catherwood. An all-but-immaculate copy of this 1965 re-issue of Frederick Catherwood's landmark 1844 "views of ancient monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan". The 1965 facsimile is in its own right a thing of beauty and quite sought after, only 500 copies having been issued by the publisher. Except for the slightest trace of light scuffing to the front panel of the publisher's elegant box (measuring 21 1/2" tall), the portfolio is as new. Frederick Catherwood's 25 remarkable chromolithographed plates are in pristine condition, as is the "outline map of Central America & Yucatan" and the accompanying caption booklet (housed in the front pastedown), giving context to and detailed description of each plate.

1965. Altogether 15 issues, ranging between 12-45 pp., of the official mouthpiece of the anarchic countercultural Provo movement in the Netherlands, including contributions from Roel Van Duyn, Olaf Stoop, and Ab Pruis among others, the journal was used to promote and incite action for social change, heavily illustrated throughout with political cartoons and images from photographs. Nos. 1-12: Tall small 4to. Wrpps., covers slightly rubbed and chipped. Nos. 13-15: Tall folio. Self-wrpps., folded into quarters, folds age-darkened, some small tears along folds. Amsterdam (1965-1967). Provo was known for their happenings, which were designed to attract police intervention, thereby inciting revolt. The group, heavily influenced by performance artist Robert Jasper Grootveld and the philosophy student Roel Van Duyn, promoted numerous schemes for the betterment of society, one of the more famous being the White Bicycle Plan that strove to replace cars in the city center with free bicycles. The groups also disturbed Princess Beatrix's wedding with a smoke bomb in protest to her fiancé's membership to a Nazi youth group, and demonstrated against the Vietnam war. When the movement began to be accepted by mainstream culture, signified in 1967 with the election of a Provo representative, it was disbanded and a funeral was held to mark the occasion.

John Lennon
Cape, UK. 1st Edition 1965. A lovely example of Lennon's second book with his autograph/signed name to the endpaper. Very rare book to be signed and un-dedicated. John Lennon's autograph at the height of Beatle mania was very difficult to obtain. His previous book 'In His Own Write' had a signing session at Foyles in 1964 so the book appears more regular albeit as a reprint. He did not undertake any such commercial signing sessions for this book so they very rarely appear on the open market. Excellent provenance will be made available when purchased. Book is near fine and in lovely square tight condition. Nice sharp corners. A few very light foxing spots to odd pages. Pages very nice and clean. Never issued with a wrapper. A cracking example. More images can be taken upon request. Ref 9312 Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

SCIANNA, Ferdinando (Bagheria 1943)
Molto Buono (Very Good). Sovraccoperta rinforzata professionalmente lungo i bordi con intervento reversibile in carta Giappone (Anonymous dedication to a well - know Sicilian painter at the first blank page. DJ professionally restored). Prima edizione (First edition). [Click Below for Full Description]

Schwartz, Claude (photographer); Roman Polanski, Jean-luc Godard (directors); Catherine Deneuve (actress)
Paris: Claude Schwartz, 1965. Vintage silver gelatin photograph of Roman Polanski, Jean-luc Godard and actress Catherine Deneuve at Cannes in May 1965, taken by French press and still photographer Claude Schwartz. With Schwartz's French press stamp appearing 5 times on the verso. Arguably the tall man in the background is Barbet Schroeder. Polanski's 1965 film, "Repulsion," a film that had much to do with Ms. Deneuve's impending fame, made its world premiere at this festival. In 1964, Ms. Deneuve appeared in "Les plus belles escroqueries du monde" ["The Beautiful Swindlers"], an omnibus of grifting stories, shot on location in Tokyo, Paris, Italy, and Amsterdam by Polanski, Godard, Claude Chabrol, Ugo Gregoretti, and Hiromichi Horikawa. Deneuve starred as a lovely swindler in Chabrol's segment, "L'Homme qui vendit la Tour Eiffel." 9.5 x 7.25 inches. Near Fine.

BAILEY, David.
London: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, [1965] - Original card clamshell box (380 x 330mm), containing 36 loose plates; each a full page half tone reproduction of a photographic portrait with biographical details of the sitters on the verso. With the piece of plain brown paper and the piece of corrugated cardboard inserted as packaging. Housed in a black flat-back cloth box made by the Chelsea Bindery. Scuff marks and rubbing to the lid, corners and edges archivally repaired, each plate in superb condition. First edition, sole impression. This seminal collection of portraits by Bailey is one of the great iconic representations of the Swinging Sixties in London. The subjects typify the newly formed social elite ranging from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones through minor royalty and groovy aristos to film stars, couturiers and gangsters. The mode of publication also hints at a new democratization. The printing is of lovely quality but photomechanical which meant the cost could be kept down to just three guineas. Oliver, Mary
Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1965. First American edition of the poet's scarce first book. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Mary Oliver on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing. A very nice example. Mary Oliver was described by The New York Times as "far and away, [America's] best-selling poet." She has won both the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and the National Book Award in 1992. Oliver's poetry has been called an "indefatigable guide to the natural world, particularly to its lesser-known aspects" (Kumin, 1993). "Visionary as Emerson [ she is] among the few American poets who can describe and transmit ecstasy, while retaining a practical awareness of the world as one of predators and prey," reviewed The Nation. Holly Prado of Los Angeles Times Book Review noted that Oliver's work "touches a vitality in the familiar that invests it with a fresh intensity." CAPOTE, Truman
NY: Random House. (1965). His most famous book, a story of the cold-blooded killing of a Kansas family that was shocking in its day for its portrayal of the lives and thoughts of the killers, as well as its graphic violence, and a bestseller that redefined the boundaries between fiction and nonfiction and helped define the New Journalism of the 1960s. Inscribed by Capote to Ruth Ford: "For dearest Ruth/ much love/ Truman." Ford, the film and stage actress, who was the sister of Charles Henri Ford and a longtime friend of William Faulkner's in her native Mississippi, became known for the gatherings she hosted at her apartment at the Dakota building in Manhattan, with guests such as Edward Albee, Tennessee Williams, and Truman Capote, among many others. Ford had invited Capote to join Faulkner and herself for a drink at her apartment in 1951, when Capote was a young, up-and-coming writer and Faulkner was, of course, one of the great American writers of the day, having won the Nobel Prize for Literature a year earlier. In an anecdote recounted in Joseph Blotner's biography of Faulkner, a half-drunk Capote began disparaging Hemingway's latest novel and Faulkner called him up short on it. Ford collaborated with Faulkner of the play "Requiem for a Nun," in which she would star when it opened in 1959. In 1971, she starred in an ill-fated musical adaptation of Capote's The Grass Harp. An excellent association copy: Ford was at the center of the New York literary scene for decades, friends with virtually everyone and, by the time of the publication of this book, a friend of Capote's … [Click Below for Full Description]

CAPOTE Truman (New Orleans 1924 - Los Angeles 1984)
Random House, 1965. Rilegato tela, sovracoperta (cloth, dust jacket) A True Account of a Multiple Murder and its Consequences. 8vo. pp. 344. Ottimo (Fine). Prima edizione (First Edition, First Impression).

Original red bindings, gilt titles design, gilt embossed Veritas seal, decorations & borders on front cover & spine. Gilt, black, red & white endpapers, frontispieces in each volume. The definitive Harvard Classics collection, also known as the Five-Foot Shelf of Books, is a monument to the world's great works of literature and history, and has been eagerly collected since it was first published in 1909. "The Harvard Classics, originally known as Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf, is a 51-volume anthology of classic works from world literature, compiled and edited by Harvard University president Charles W. Eliot that was first published in 1909. Eliot, then President of Harvard University, had stated in speeches that the elements of a liberal education could be obtained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. (Originally he had said a three-foot shelf.) The publisher P. F. Collier and Son saw an opportunity, and challenged him to make good on this statement by selecting an appropriate collection of works; the Harvard Classics was the result. Eliot worked for one year together with William A. Neilson, a professor of English; Eliot determined the works to be included and Neilson selected the specific editions and wrote introductory notes. Each volume had 400 to 450 pages or so; and the included texts are "so far as possible, entire works or complete segments of the world's written legacies." INCLUDES: Vol. 1: FRANKLIN, WOOL … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

SCIANNA, Ferdinando (Bagheria 1943)
16mo. pp. 222. Ottimo (Fine). Prima edizione (First edition).
