Capote, Truman
New York: Random House, 1965. First edition of Capote's landmark non-fiction novel. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Truman Capote on a tipped in page. Fine in a very good dust jacket with some light rubbing to the extremities. Jacket design by S. Neil Fujita. "Until one morning in mid-November of 1959, few Americans--in fact, few Kansans--had ever heard of Holcomb. Like the waters of the river, like the motorists on the highway, and like the yellow trains streaking down the Santa Fe tracks, drama, in the shape of exceptional happenings, had never stopped there." If all Truman Capote did was invent a new genre--journalism written with the language and structure of literature--this "nonfiction novel" about the brutal slaying of the Clutter family by two would-be robbers would be remembered as a trail-blazing experiment that has influenced countless writers. But Capote achieved more than that. He wrote a true masterpiece of creative nonfiction. In Cold Blood established Capote as the "herald of a new genre, ‘the non-fiction novel,' which recognizes the convergence of fiction and fact in times of outrage, the insane surrealism of daily life" (Hart, 122; Allen, 247). "The best documentary account of an American crime ever written. . . . The book chills the blood and exercises the intelligence . . . harrowing" (The New York Review of Books).

GERALD R FORD to Fellow Congressman 1st Ed.
1965. [KENNEDY, JOHN F.]. FORD, GERALD R. & JOHN R. STILES. Portrait of the Assassin. New York: Simon & Schuster, 1965. First Edition, First Printing. Signed and inscribed by Gerald R. Ford to fellow Congressman Don Clancy of Ohio with a long full page inscription. Inscribed: "12/10/65 - To Don Clancy in appreciation of your fine friendship and wonderful assistance in 1965. I am deeply grateful for your many kindnesses and look forward to working with you on behalf of the Republication cause in the months ahead. Betty joins with me in extending our very best to you and your family. Gerald R. Ford." The inscription references Ford's 1965 rise to Minority Leader and Clancy aided him in a closely contested election. Clancy eventually served 8 terms in the US House of Representatives. Very good in a very good dust jacket. A book about the life of Lee Harvey Oswald, who according to the Warren Commission (of which then Congressman Gerald R. Ford was a member), was the lone assassin of Present John F. Kennedy, with much information about the two Mrs. Oswalds and many acquaintances of the Oswald family. Seix Barral, 1965. PRIMERA EDICIÓN FIRMADA POR EL AUTOR (G. Cabrerea Infante) y DEDICADA ( a Manuel Valls). FIRST EDITION SIGNED (by the author) & DEDICATED (to Manuel Valls). Premio Biblioteca breve 1964. Limitierte A … [Click Below for Full Description]

Collection of 141 photographs, including 132 large-format press photographs (20.5x25cm. or the inverse) and 9 smaller personal snapshots (ca. Comprised of photographs taken by the following companies: Greater Seattle News Bureau (49); Forde Photographer (Seattle) (48); Camera Craft (Seattle) (16); Phil H. Webber (Seattle?) (4); Dudley, Hardin & Yang (Seattle) (3); and Ackroyd (Portland) (2). Location appears to be chiefly at Bryant's Marina in Seattle, possibly an excursion on the occasion of the Miss Pacific Northwest Pageant, with almost all the photographs showing a group of three women in their sashes accompanied by their seaplane captain. Depicts more than a hundred young women who have won a local beauty pageant, from Washington, Oregon, Alaska, British Columbia, and at least one contestant from Idaho. Presumably taken over the course of several years, as different women appear with sashes for the same contests (Port Angeles, Sedro Woolley (a local high school), Juneau, Ellensburg Rodeo, Anchorage, Poulsbo, etc.). Includes photographs of future Miss Washington Kippy Lou Brinkman (1965), Miss Canada Linda Douma (1965), and Miss Alaska Teresa Hanson (1961). The Miss America contest, first formed in 1921 to lure tourists to Atlantic City, expanded its parameters by the post-World War II years to include both a talent and ball gown portion to the competition, ostensibly l … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mao Zedong
Central Political Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, Beijing, 1965. First complete edition of Quotations from Chairman Mao. Duodecimo, original wrappers as issued, frontispiece portrait of Chairman Mao. Lin Biao's calligraphic endorsement leaf intact after the frontispiece with the corrected superfluous brush stroke in the second line. In 1972, an edict was issued that Lin's name was to be obliterated from history, following disclosures that he had plotted a coup and planned to assassinate Mao; consequently, "many surviving copies in the Chinese language have that page legitimately torn away, mutilated or censored" (Schiller, p. 36). In very good condition with pilgrimage stamps to the rear panel and a small name to the front free endpaper. A nice example. Printed for the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army, the first edition of Mao's Quotations, was issued in two states and bindings: the uncorrected first state text in red vinyl plastic, and the corrected second state in paper wrappers. The corrected copies, issued in wrappers and intended for high-ranking officers, were released first; the uncorrected copies, issued in red vinyl and for use by brigade teams, were released shortly afterwards, as the sturdier binding took longer to manufacture. By the start of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, the red vinyl design had become symbolic of Mao's slogan "The East is Red", and the paper wrappers were discontinued. The year 1966 also "signaled the start of a major translation and publication project when the Little Red Book was issued in o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Perret, Christopher
1965. Approximately 9 1/2 x 15", ink and watercolor on paper. Inscribed "to A + D" at lower left hand corner in pencil, and signed "Christopher" in the lower right and corner. A striking and mysterious drawing by Christopher Perret, who was at one time associated with Leni Sinclair, and whose artwork appeared in the pages of some of the best magazines of the era, including the Artists' Workshop journal, Poesie Vivante, and Botteghe Oscure. Two volumes of his poetry were published in fugitive editions by Outposts and Hors Commerce Press. He was also known as a translator. The drawing is a striking one, featuring a woman with a cup reversed, spilling a red liquid, possibly blood that rises to frame her. Because of the upended cup we wonder if this is a reference to the tarot. Perret died of a heart attack in 1965, the year in which this drawing is dated. He seems to have left behind many mysteries - David just handed me a copy of El Corno Emplumado 18, with a biographical note that states "we know little about the 5 Algerian poets translated here by Christopher Perret, and Perret's death leaves us without possibility of further knowledge concerning them. . . " Card stock chipped, brittle, and tidemarked at margins, good only. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Fleming, Ian
Jonathan Cape, London, 1965. First edition, first state with the golden gun embossed on the front board. Octavo, original black boards, green patterned endpapers. The publisher set out to publish the embossed gun but the cost proved prohibitive to continue, so the gilt-stamping was ceased, and the remaining copies were published with plain front boards. "This issue with the golden gun on the casing is the rarest, by far, of the Bond books. There are certainly fewer than the 290-odd of the signed limited edition of On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The Cape archives do not reveal how many copies were produced with the golden gun stamping. Copies tend to turn up most frequently in the extremities of the British Commonwealth, e.g., South Africa, Kenya, Australia and New Zealand" (Biondi & Pickard, 50). "Publication day would be the same throughout the British Commonwealth and stock would need to arrive in good time to meet this date. The books were sent from the UK via container ship (a 'slow boat') as air transport was expensive, and those nations furthest afield would be sent the earliest available copies (which, of course, meant the 'Golden Gun' bindings) at the first opportunity, to ensure a simultaneous publication as intended" (Gilbert, p. 418). Gilbert A13a (1.1). An excellent near fine example with the gilt bright, a small contemporary name to the front pastedown in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. A very bright example of the rare first state binding. Made into the 1975 film of the same title starring Roger Moore as Bond, with an all-star cast which inc … [Click Below for Full Description]

CRAWFORD, Henry C.
Cleveland, Ohio, 1965. 4/27/2018. Near Fine. Nine black and white silver gelatin photographs. Each measuring 8" x 10", without captions. Slight curling with some creasing else very good. A small archive of images taken by noted African-American Cleveland photographer Henry C. Crawford. The photographs depict a few different events, including two wonderful images from a large children's birthday party, a family gathering, and a few portraits. Some are stamped on the reverse side, it can be presumed that Crawford took all the photos. Crawford became well-known in Cleveland both for his profession, and also for marrying a white woman, making the couple one of the first interracial couples in Cleveland's elite society. A modest but interesting assemblage of images taken by a noted African-American photographer in the 1960s.

Earl NEWMAN
N.p.: 1965. Condition: Light edgewear; darkening and adhesive tape remnants to verso; image bright and clean - Very Good to Near Fine. Striking portrait of a folksinger with a twelve-string guitar. Original four-color screenprint, 89cm x 57cm (ca 35" x 22-1/2"), on heavy white poster stock. Signed in pencil lower right, dated 1965. Light edgewear; darkening and adhesive tape remnants to verso; image bright and clean - Very Good to Near Fine. Striking portrait of a folksinger with a twelve-string guitar. Though untitled, the image bears a strong resemblance to Newman's 2009 poster-portrait of Pete Seeger, who we strongly suspect is the subject of this piece as well. Rare image by the talented West Coast printmaker Earl Newman (b. 1930), who began designing posters for the California music scene in the late 1950s. Some of his best-known designs have been his annual posters for the Monterey Jazz Festival, which he began producing in 1963. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
