Signed proof poster for the film of Katerina Izmailova

Leningrad: Volodarsky Printing Shop, March 20,, 1965. Proof avant les lettres of a large monochrome lithographic poster (850 × 603 mm). Archivally framed. Slightly worn and creased; some browning; lower portion lightly rippled; professionally laid down. Signed and inscribed by the composer in the lower margin (in Russian): "To dear Irina Ivanovna and Georgy Nikolayevich with best thanks D. Shostakovich April 16, 1965". This striking poster, here in proof state before letters - without Shostakovich's name above the titling and the name of "I.I. Vedernikova" in the margin at top right - was produced in connection with the 1966-67 film adaptation of the revised version of Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of the Mtensk District, titled Katerina Izmailova, which had premiered on January 8, 1963. "Shostakovich completed Lady Macbeth in December 1932, dedicating it to his new bride Nina Varzar. The work was projected as the first of a trilogy or tetralogy of operas, a cycle dealing with the fates of women from different periods of Russian history … The opera … was an immediate critical and, especially, popular success; its earthy approach to sex, its graphic language and extreme violence gave it powerful veristic appeal. The composer's confident mastery of the musical and dramatic idiom was indisputable. Despite minor criticisms, Lady Macbeth was widely hailed as the first major opera of the Soviet period." (Laurel Fay, Grove Music Online). Despite its success, the opera was banned by Stalin for its bleak portrayal of Soviet life and disappeared from the repertory for nearly 30 years. Shostakovich significantly revised the music during 1954-63 after Stalin's death; the work was "rehabilitated" as Katarina Izmailova receiving its first performance at the Stanislavsky Nemirovich-Danchenko Theatre in Moscow. "Although Lady Macbeth has finally and firmly established itself among the few operatic masterpieces of the 20th century, its fate as tragic victim of Soviet political repression also caused an irreparable loss for the history of opera. Still under the age of 30 and one of the most naturally gifted theatrical composers of his generation, Shostakovich abandoned his ambition to create a tetralogy of operas about women after the work's condemnation. Despite a lifelong attraction to the genre and frequent fitful starts, he never completed another opera" (ibid.). We have been unable to identify the recipients but they may have been linked to the Shevchenko Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Kiev: "Of all the productions [of Katerina Izmailova], Shostakovich found the one at the Shevchenko… the most satisfying musically, and thus it was the forces from this theatre, under the baton of Konstantin Simeonov, who were recruited to record the soundtrack for the film version… (directed by Mikhail Shapiro for Lemfilm) in 1965… Shostakovich himself prepared the scenario and supervised the taping and editing of the film, which was released in 1967" (Laurel E. Fay, Shostakovich: A Life, OUP 2000, p. 239). This compelling image owes something, in terms of form and shading, to the earlier Russian Cubo-Futurist school, exemplified in paintings such as Malevich's The Woodcutter (1912). The edition was probably limited to 1000 copies, as indicated by a code alongside the printer's name in the lower margin. Ephemera of such an impressive nature, inscribed by one of the masters of 20th-century music, is rarely encountered.

Briefe von Ludwig Wittgenstein und Erinnerungen an ihn [WITH] Letters from Ludwig Wittgenstein

Paul Engelmann, Haifa 1965 - Small Folio. 83 (1)pp. on onion skin paper. Original stapled brown wraps. Carbon copies of manuscript with collection of 54 letters from Ludwig Wittgenstein to Paul Engelmann starting with a letter of 12/25/1916 through 6/21/1937, followed by essays "Wittgenstein in Olmütz," "Religiöses" (Religious Matters), "Literatur, Musik, Film" (Literature, Music, and Cinema), "Bemerkungen zum Tractatus" (Observations on the Tractatus), "Die Familie Wittgensteins" (Wittgenstein's Family), "Kraus, Loos, Wittgenstein," and "Der wortlose Glaube" (Wordless faith). Introduction by Dr. Josef Schächter. The book was written in German by Engelmann during the last months of his life describing his birthplace and the intellectual circles of the city. It was published in an English translation by Horizon Press in 1968. The manuscript is apparently a late version. It contains a number of handwritten annotations and corrections by Engelmann, including direct instructions for the translator. Text of the manuscript, all corrections and annotations are included in the Horizon Press, New York, 1968 publication "Letters from Ludwig Wittgenstein." The publication features Wittgenstein letters in English and German with footnotes of the German manuscript published in English only. The essays are published in English only. The letters document the close relationship between the two men, the essays treat Wittgenstein's stay in Olmütz, Engelmann's birthplace, religious matters, literature, music and film, Engelmann's remarks on Wittgensteins Tractatus, the Wittgenstein family, the relation of Wittgenstein, Karl Kraus and the architect Adolf Loos, and the wordless faith, a philosophical commentary on un-reflected sets of beliefs. Manuscript and the published book are dedicated to Engelmann's mother. Paperback "Letters from Ludwig Wittgenstein" published by Horizon Press, 1967, included. Text in German. Wraps with some small tears and chips at spine. Water damage to the top portion of the book with some staining and rippling as a result. Wraps in fair, interior in good- condition overall. Protected by modern mylar. Extremely scarce. Paul Engelmann (1891-1965) studied architecture under Adolf Loos in Vienna, presumably his favorite student. He was best known for the design and building of the Stonborough House in Vienna, commissioned by Wittgenstein's sister Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein. Engelmann also worked as a private secretary for the Austrian writer and journalist Karl Kraus. Engelmann emigrated to Palestine in 1934. He settled and worked as an interior designer in Haifa until his death in 1965. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Detroit: Artists' Workshop Press, 1965 and 1966. First Edition. Wraps. Very good +. 4to. Side-stapled photographic wraps, the first orange, the second light blue. Interiors printed mimeo on both rectos and versos. First issue very good plus or better; second very good. No. 1 has a small dent to fore edge, and rear wrapper half-separated from bottom staple. Otherwise printed throughout on tan paper; trivially toned, but clean and fresh overall. 78pp. Second issue a bit soiled, toned to wrappers, and top staple fully separated from rear wrapper. Also includes a photo section; and other pages light-gray paper; a bit yellowed, but clean. 118pp. A handsome set of this relatively fragile and quite beautiful production, conceived as a magazine for enthusiasts of "The New Jazz Music," or free jazz as it came to be commonly known. The production was led by John Sinclair, with help from his wife Leni, and trumpeter Charles Moore, featuring writing from secveral leading voices in new jazz: Archie Shepp, Marion Brown, Sun Ra, Joseph Jarman, Stanley Cowell, and Andrew Hill. The magazine also featured concert and record reviews by Sinclair, George Tysh, and many others, discussing the leading lights of new jazz: Coltrane (including an interview), Ayler, Coleman, Dolphy, Sanders, Mingus, Davis, et al. Includes poems by Clark Coolidge in the first issue. Quite a remarkable document of the early years of an emerging art form. The second issue was printed in an edition of 1000 copies, and the first in an unknown limitation. Scarce. OCLC locates only 16 copies of any issues.

[Altered book in the shape of a gun.]

[Kingston, NY? the artist, 1990s?] A copy of S.D. Conte's Elementary Numerical Analysis: an Algorithmic Approach (New York: McGraw-Hill, ©1965) has been carved by the artist Robert Thé into the shape of a Luger-like semi-automatic pistol. The unaltered spine forms the top of the breech and barrel, and most of the open part of the book has been removed to form a barrel, grip, and trigger guard; the last is drilled irregularly to create the illusion of a trigger. 23.4 x 15.7 x 2 cm (maximum width). Dark red cloth with gilt titling on a grey background. A copy of the original book accompanies this artist's book. They provide an interesting surprise shelved together. In his essay "The beauty of second use" (The best American essays 2008, edited by Adam Gopnik. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2008), Jonathan Lethem writes about receiving as a gift "a copy of my own first novel, Gun, with occasional music [1994], expertly cut into the contours of a pistol. The object was the work of Robert The, an artist whose specialty is the reincarnation of everyday materials…. The gun-book wasn't readable, exactly, but I couldn't take offense at… this appropriated object conveyed back to me—the strange beauty of its second use…. [T]he world makes room for both my novel and Robert The's gun-book. There's no need to choose between the two." Light wear at the head and tail of the gun-book backstrip. A previous owner has written his name, Minneapolis address and telephone number, and a collection number in ink on the flyleaf of the unaltered copy. **Free domestic or international shipping with direct order.

        Don't Stop the Carnival.

New York: Doubleday & Company, 1965. First edition of Wouk's classic comedy. Octavo, original half cloth, pictorial endpapers. Inscribed by the author to his physician in the year of publication, "Gratitude and good wishes to Dr. Abe Levine Sincerely Herman Wouk 9 III 65 New York." Fine in a very good dust jacket light wear to the extremities. A nice association. Don't Stop the Carnival is a comedy about escaping middle-age crisis to the Caribbean, a heaven that quickly turns into a hell for the main character. The book is said to be loosely based on Herman Wouk's experiences in managing an actual hotel, in the early 1960s in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The novel was turned into a musical by Jimmy Buffett in 1997.

Biography of an Idea: Memoirs of Public Relations Counsel Edward L. Bernays.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1965. First edition of the father of public relations' biography. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Boldly signed by Edward L. Bernays on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. The idea is Public Relations. The author is the pioneer who did more than anyone else to establish its principles, practices and ethics. The book is his autobiography, of which Eric Hodgins has written: [It] "is inextricably entwined with some of the most socially significant years this republic ever under-went," and about the author, "...you, of course are responsible for a considerable amount of the changes you record." A twentieth-century marketing visionary, Edward L. Bernays brilliantly combined mastery of the social sciences with a keen understanding of human psychology to become one of his generation's most influential social architects. In Biography of an Idea, Bernays traces the formative moments of his career, from his time in the Woodrow Wilson administration as one of the nation's key wartime propagandists to his consultancy for such corporate giants as Procter & Gamble, General Electric, and Dodge Motors. While working with the American Tobacco Company, Bernays launched his now-infamous Lucky Strike campaign, which effectively ended the long-standing taboo against women smoking in public. With his vast knowledge of the psychology of the masses, Bernays was in great demand, advising high-profile officials and counseling the tastemakers of his generation. His masterful and at times manipulative techniques had longstanding influences on social and political beliefs as well as on cultural trends. Biography of an Idea is a fascinating look at the birth of public relations--an industry that continues to hold sway over American society.

18 Werke (alles Erschienene), dazu: "Neue Studien". Insges. 21 Bände. Zus. 12912 Seiten.
