The 1965 Signatures of All of the Members of The Rolling Stones

Original wraps. Very Good +. On the last leg of the first Scandinavian tour of The Rolling Stones (March 26th-April 2nd, 1965), a young fan intercepted the band at the airport in Stockholm as they were arriving (on March 31st or April 1st). He used 4 small pieces of lined notepad paper and on these 4 pages managed to get the signatures of Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Keith Richard, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman. The 4 uniform pages (which each measures 3"x4") are clean and bright but do show a bit of creasing. Underneath each signature, the young fan dutifully printed the corresponding name of each member of The Stones in a steady hand. Keith Richard and Charlie Watts shared one piece of paper, the other 3 members each got their own page. The 4 pages are nicely presented in a deep-red frame with a dark backdrop. Collections of early signatures of all of the members of The Stones of course are elusive, given the band's increasing inaccessibilty and, most of all, given Brian Jones' untimely death on July 3rd, 1969.

(RUSCHA, EDWARD). Ruscha, Edward. SOME LOS ANGELES APARTMENTS. Los Angeles. 1965 (1970).: Self-Published, Second Edition 1/3000. 12mo. Printed Wrappers with Glassine. Artist's Book. Fine./Very Good -.. np (48pp), 34 b&w illustrations. "Some Los Angeles Apartments" is Ed Ruscha's 1965 photographic homage to the subtle beauty of the post-war Southern California rental property construction boom (and not to be confused with the 1990 Whitney Museum exhibition catalogue of virtually the same title). A bright white, most handsome example of the 1970 second edition (entry B3 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999" which is also cited on page 141 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", pages 198-201 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 105 of "From Fair to Fine 2", and page 226 of "From Fair to Fine 3") limited to three thousand unnumbered copies in the publisher's original glassine wrapper showing some mild age-toning, two closed tears, and a small chip missing from the top edge of the rear cover.         An archive of pressbooks designed by Saul Bass

N.p., N.p. 1965 - A dazzling collection of 10 original pressbooks designed by Saul Bass, documenting the majority of the famed title and ad designer's work with director Otto Preminger in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Several of the pressbooks typically defy the existing conventions of pressbook design, utilizing a wild variation of size and dimension, with several of the items literally molded to represent the films they represent: "Advise and Consent" is shaped like a briefcase, "In Harm's Way" is designed as a dossier with a string tie, "The Cardinal" as a parcel, and "Bunny Lake is Missing" as a newspaper. Other key Bass designed titles include "Anatomy of a Murder," "Bonjour Tristesse," and "The Man with the Golden Arm."For most of the pressbooks in this collection, we have never seen another example. A fascinating example of the advertising work done by the premiere title and ad designer of the twentieth century.Various sizes, ranging from Very Good to Near Fine condition.Complete details available on request.

        The North Ship

London: Fortune Press, 1965. Early Reprint. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Second (unauthorized) Edition. Tall, slim 8vo: [4],36pp. Publisher's maroon buckram (some copies bound in brownish-orange buckram, no priority known), spine lettered in gilt, bottom edge untrimmed; beige dust jacket (Bloomfield calls it pale orange, but to my eye there is very little, if any, orange in it) printed in black, priced 21s. Possibly run off from the same plates as the first edition, with this copyright page still reading "First Published 1945," though this edition appeared in a larger format than the original (9 1/8'' x 5 5/8'' vs. 7 1/8 x 5"). A virtually pristine, unread copy, completely free of foxing and wear, in Fine jacket. Bloomfield A1(b). Originally published, by the Fortune Press, in 1945. This pirated edition, limited to 500 copies, was issued in advance of the authorized Faber & Faber release, which appeared in 1966 but was swiftly withdrawn when Larkin discovered its existence. By 1972, according to Bloomfield, the publisher still had 220 copies in stock, but these had no dust jackets, which "had inadvertently been destroyed." Larkin's first major collection of [31] poems, The North Ship is often criticised for its high-flown Yeatsian rhetoric, but it is, essentially, a wartime collection of poems and its significance lies primarily in its elegiac lyricism and withdrawn but tenacious sense of survival." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

        The Fundamentals of Japanese Archery

Bok. 106 s. Japansk trådbunden stil. Hyfsat skick. This very rare book was the first book written on Kyudo in English. Even if Acker often is given credit for this book its core appears to be written by Toshisuke Nasu and translated by Acker who complemented the text with a foreword and interesting notes. This book was privately published in handwritten form with beautiful pictures and colorful drawings. There are only 12 known copies of this rare book (ref. OCLC) and we are very proud to have one of them in our library. The first printed edition came from Tuttle 1965 with the title ?Japanese Archery?. Tuttle also recently made a reprint in paperback edition from 1998 (se "Kyudo" by Acker in the library). Many of the photographs from the original handwritten book are unfortunately missing (at least from the 1998 edition). Acker studied archery under Toshisuke Nasu. In his notes he also mentions Chinese influence in Kyudo and make some comparisons to Western archery. From the foreword: "This book is not a treatise on Japanese archery in general, but a short statement of the aims and methods of archery as now practiced in Japan, or at any rate how it has been taught to me [in Japan]. For there are many schools of archery in Japan with all sorts of different traditions. Some emphasize one thing, others another, but on the whole it would seem that they really differ only in non-essentials--small tricks of technique and matters of ceremonial form...To the Westerner by far the most interesting thing about the archery of the Far East is the fact that both in China and Japan the string is still drawn to a point well behind the ear as was done in the old English archery of Roger Ascham's time." The 1937 handwritten book is in original printed wraps and printed paper cover label, stiff board portfolio with flaps and tie-string. A very beautiful copy. The only flaw is a small water damage affecting the first pages, but very slightly marked, no warp and no text affected..

Postcard from Seattle with handwritten message to Lucien Carr and Aileen [Lee] dated August 30, 1965

Boston: Colurpicture Publishers, 1965. 3.5x5.5 inch color postcard with photograph of a night view of Third Street, Seattle, with the text in white, "Greetings from Seattle." On rear is a sixteen-line tightly written message in black ball-point pen, addressed in Ginsberg's hand to Lucien Carr, 44 Horatio Street, New York City, NY, inscribed "Love as ever" and signed Allen Ginsberg with an airmail doodle and a return address care of City Lights in his hand, dated Aug. 30 1965 with a canceled red 6 cent stamp. Beneath the script is a halftone image of the state with Washington above it. There are several brownish stains, otherwise very good. Carr was one of the primary figures at Columbia who formed the core of the Beat movement together with Ginsberg, Kerouac and Burroughs. He was also a main character in both Kerouac's "Town and the City" and Kerouac/Burroughs' piece "And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks," both of which deal with the Kammerer/Carr murder story. The text of the postcard is as follows: "Dear Lucien and Aileen - Spent a month looking around San Francisco with poets, then spent $2000 on a Volkswagon Camper 1964 Microbus, & took off for here with Gary Snyder to go backpacking and mountain hiking with ice axes and crampons around Cascade Mountains. I guess I'll be here another month and then head East in the camper with Peter. I got a great sleeping bag the size of a football rolled up. We read Tibetan poetry every morn and go thru Nature forest area...Fortunately I'm far from rumored conspiracies by the Treas. Dept. Narco bureau to fix me for a vacation. Peter is in SF with Julius - Miss you - maybe we'll all go biking in White Mountains or Purple Mountains or - well anyway Love as ever - Allen Ginsberg

[The Danzig Trilogy, comprising] The Tin Drum; Cat and Mouse; Dog Years

New York: Pantheon [Harcourt, Brace & World, through 1965], 1961. First Printings. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Printings of the first American editions, with matching dust jackets illustrated with drawings by the author. All translated from the German by Ralph Manheim. 8vo's; 592; 190; 570pp. The Thin Drum (Pantheon, 1961): Publisher's finely woven red cloth, the upper boarded stamped with a device of the "tin" drummer, the spine lettered in black and gilt, with a matching black top stain and threaded end papers, the dust jacket priced at $6.95. Both book and jacket are virtually As New, with no discernible faults. Cat and Mouse (Harcourt, Brace & World, 1963): Publisher's finely woven black cloth, the upper boarded stamped with a device of a curled-up cat, the spine lettered in red and gilt, the dust jacket priced at $3.95. Both book and jacket are in Fine condition, barring just a shade of toning to the jacket's spine. Dog Years (Harcourt, Brace & World, 1965): Publisher's original black cloth with brown end papers, the spine lettered in gilt, the dust jacket priced at $6.95. Fine, square and tight, in a Fine jacket with no wear. The Tin Drum, the first installment in the author's Danzig Trilogy, offers a searing indictment of the role ordinary Germans played in Hitler’s National Socialist regime and of their reluctance to address issues of guilt in the postwar era. At the time of the book's publication, the dominant historical view held that National Socialist crimes had been committed by a few fanatical individuals—an idea endorsed by the Nuremberg Trials of key Nazis in 1945-1946. It was not until the Auschwitz trials of 1963-65 that the part played in the Holocaust by “ordinary” men and women was fully documented. Grass’s next two books, Cat and Mouse and Dog Years, continue his exploration of this, until then, widely unacknowledged perspective. When Grass was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999, in large part for the Danzig Trilogy, the prize committee noted the books' remarkable portrayal of “the forgotten face of history.” Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
