Biography of an Idea: Memoirs of Public Relations Counsel Edward L. Bernays.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1965. First edition of the father of public relations' biography. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Boldly signed by Edward L. Bernays on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. The idea is Public Relations. The author is the pioneer who did more than anyone else to establish its principles, practices and ethics. The book is his autobiography, of which Eric Hodgins has written: [It] "is inextricably entwined with some of the most socially significant years this republic ever under-went," and about the author, "...you, of course are responsible for a considerable amount of the changes you record." A twentieth-century marketing visionary, Edward L. Bernays brilliantly combined mastery of the social sciences with a keen understanding of human psychology to become one of his generation's most influential social architects. In Biography of an Idea, Bernays traces the formative moments of his career, from his time in the Woodrow Wilson administration as one of the nation's key wartime propagandists to his consultancy for such corporate giants as Procter & Gamble, General Electric, and Dodge Motors. While working with the American Tobacco Company, Bernays launched his now-infamous Lucky Strike campaign, which effectively ended the long-standing taboo against women smoking in public. With his vast knowledge of the psychology of the masses, Bernays was in great demand, advising high-profile officials and counseling the tastemakers of his generation. His masterful and at times manipulative techniques had longstanding influences on social and political beliefs as well as on cultural trends. Biography of an Idea is a fascinating look at the birth of public relations--an industry that continues to hold sway over American society.

        Naked Lunch

Olympia Press, Paris 1965 - Reprint (originally published in 1959). Printed green wrappers. Modest edgewear, slight tear at base of the spine, very good or better, without dustwrapper. Inscribed by Burroughs to poet and publisher Charles Plymell: "for Codeine Charlie, All the best medications. William S. Burroughs RX."[With]: the program for the Memorial Service held for Burroughs in Lawrence, Kansas in 1997. One leaf folded to make four pages, photo illustration of Burroughs on first page. Fine. Plymell has written a brief poem in the program.[With]: a small business card sized poem (different from the one above) printed by the Bottle of Smoke Press: *Cut Praises: At William Burroughs' funeral service Lawrence, KS, Aug. 6, 1997*. Fine. Signed by Plymell. One of the most influential novels of the post-WWII era with a notable association. Aside from his own poetry, the Kansas-born Plymell was an early 1960s confident of the Beat Generation. Burroughs praised Plymell thusly: "Plymell has as much to say about death as Hemingway did and a lot more to say about it in terms of the present generation stillborn into a world that can offer nothing." In the foreword to Plymell's *Apocalypse Rose* Allen Ginsberg described Plymell and his friends inventing the Wichita Vortex, a movement of creativity inspired by Kansas which had nevertheless ". driven a host of prophetic youths out of heartland Kansas." Plymell and his wife later founded Cherry Valley Editions, which published work by Burroughs and many others. Plymell also published *Zap Comix* #1 in 1968. A significant association. The 1965 Signatures of All of the Members of The Rolling Stones

Original wraps. Very Good +. On the last leg of the first Scandinavian tour of The Rolling Stones (March 26th-April 2nd, 1965), a young fan intercepted the band at the airport in Stockholm as they were arriving (on March 31st or April 1st). He used 4 small pieces of lined notepad paper and on these 4 pages managed to get the signatures of Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Keith Richard, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman. The 4 uniform pages (which each measures 3"x4") are clean and bright but do show a bit of creasing. Underneath each signature, the young fan dutifully printed the corresponding name of each member of The Stones in a steady hand. Keith Richard and Charlie Watts shared one piece of paper, the other 3 members each got their own page. The 4 pages are nicely presented in a deep-red frame with a dark backdrop. Collections of early signatures of all of the members of The Stones of course are elusive, given the band's increasing inaccessibilty and, most of all, given Brian Jones' untimely death on July 3rd, 1969.

An archive of pressbooks designed by Saul Bass

N.p., N.p. 1965 - A dazzling collection of 10 original pressbooks designed by Saul Bass, documenting the majority of the famed title and ad designer's work with director Otto Preminger in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Several of the pressbooks typically defy the existing conventions of pressbook design, utilizing a wild variation of size and dimension, with several of the items literally molded to represent the films they represent: "Advise and Consent" is shaped like a briefcase, "In Harm's Way" is designed as a dossier with a string tie, "The Cardinal" as a parcel, and "Bunny Lake is Missing" as a newspaper. Other key Bass designed titles include "Anatomy of a Murder," "Bonjour Tristesse," and "The Man with the Golden Arm."For most of the pressbooks in this collection, we have never seen another example. A fascinating example of the advertising work done by the premiere title and ad designer of the twentieth century.Various sizes, ranging from Very Good to Near Fine condition.Complete details available on request.

        The North Ship

London: Fortune Press, 1965. Early Reprint. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Second (unauthorized) Edition. Tall, slim 8vo: [4],36pp. Publisher's maroon buckram (some copies bound in brownish-orange buckram, no priority known), spine lettered in gilt, bottom edge untrimmed; beige dust jacket (Bloomfield calls it pale orange, but to my eye there is very little, if any, orange in it) printed in black, priced 21s. Possibly run off from the same plates as the first edition, with this copyright page still reading "First Published 1945," though this edition appeared in a larger format than the original (9 1/8'' x 5 5/8'' vs. 7 1/8 x 5"). A virtually pristine, unread copy, completely free of foxing and wear, in Fine jacket. Bloomfield A1(b). Originally published, by the Fortune Press, in 1945. This pirated edition, limited to 500 copies, was issued in advance of the authorized Faber & Faber release, which appeared in 1966 but was swiftly withdrawn when Larkin discovered its existence. By 1972, according to Bloomfield, the publisher still had 220 copies in stock, but these had no dust jackets, which "had inadvertently been destroyed." Larkin's first major collection of [31] poems, The North Ship is often criticised for its high-flown Yeatsian rhetoric, but it is, essentially, a wartime collection of poems and its significance lies primarily in its elegiac lyricism and withdrawn but tenacious sense of survival." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
