[Photo Album]: Lithuanian Immigrants and Flappers

Lithuania, New York, 1965. Very Good. Oblong folio measuring 11" x 14". String-tied red leather over stiff paper boards with "photographs" stamped on the front board. Contains 283 sepia-toned or black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 8" x 10" with captions. Very good with worn corners, rubbing and short tears with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a wealthy Lithuanian family beginning in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The album shows the family in Europe before eventually immigrating to the United States, although the photos are not all in chronological order. Many of the early photos show portraits of Lithuanian family members captioned "these pictures are from Europe, Lithuania." Many of the people in these photos are well-dressed with some men in uniform. One of the photos shows women at the edge of a river and reads, "this is the way they wash clothes in Europe." Following the European photos the family is seen on a boat, the Reliance, headed for New York in September of 1930. They also boarded the S.S. New York for the same voyage and photographed the mast, water, and other passengers abroad the ship. Many of the captions include tongue-in-cheek musings including a photo of the women of the family seated with some men which reads, "did we have boyfriends?" Other photos show the family visiting relatives in the US and back in Europe as well as taking beach vacations and road trips in the family car. The younger women of the family took to the fashion of the day and are photographed around their home with captions reading, "what flapper?" and "brunette baby." One of the girls went on to become a nurse in Pennsylvania and she is pictured in affectionate photographs with her colleagues. They are also frequently posed with their dog "Lindy." Other photos include portraits of friends, wedding photos, and some of men in military uniforms. The final pages are dated 1962 and show an older couple around their family home, presumably the parents of the "flappers."A nice album of photography featuring European immigrants enjoying the "American dream."

A Sixteenth Century Mexican Broadside from the collection of Emilio Valtón. Described, with a Checklist, by Edwin H. Carpenter.

Los Angeles:: Dawson's Book Shop, 1965., 1965. Folio. 14 pp. Title printed in red & black; front pocket. Original quarter beige cloth with blue-gray boards and a gilt-device on upper cover, printed spine label. Occidental/ Lawrence Clark Powell (gift) bookplate. Fine. LIMITED EDITION of 140 copies, designed and printed by Saul & Lillian Marks at the Plantin Press. Valtón owned thirty-nine pre-1600 broadsheets, listed here by Ed Carpenter (1915-1995). This leaf book contains an original printed leaf from the first press in the New World. It is known that all copies of this edition differ, some printed leaves being more desirable. // The present specimen is a promissory note, opening with the printed phrase, "Sepan quantos estra carta vieren come yo ..." translates closely to "Know by all men that this letter ..." The accompanying essay describes that similar legal documents were among the first printed documents in Mexico. This was because certain legal phraseology allowed for a document to print the standard words needed and then add the necessary text in manuscript, as with this specimen. Dr. Emilio Valtón was the first bibliographer to collect this extremely early and otherwise ignored form of printing in Spain. // "Carta de pago" [power of attorney]. Gothic type. Approx. 9 x 12 ½ inches. 44 lines. Printed on one side. With a leading capital letter S followed by the phrase cited above, "Sepan..." followed by seven lines of manuscript text. Then, in printed form begins, "Generalmente para a en todos mis pleytos, causas ceuiles y criminal les mouidos y poz mouer, que yo be y tengo con qual esquier personas, y las tales y otras quale ..." The verso also has a nine-line manuscript with elaborate signature. By inference this piece is attributed to Pedro Ocharte. // See: Valtón, Emilio.         Venti quartine di Omar Khayyam

Roma: Bestetti, 1965. Spirito inquieto girovagò a lungo prediligendo l'America Latina, come testimoniano i soggiorni in Brasile, Argentina, Cile, Perù, Messico, Bolivia, Venezuela.

        The Orchard Keeper.

Random House, New York 1965 - First edition of the author's rare first book. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author in a contemporary hand on the front free endpaper, "To John Sheddan Cormac McCarthy." Near fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The novels of Cormac McCarthy owe much to William Faulkner, especially in their "use of dialect and concrete sense of the world— a debt McCarthy does not dispute. ‘The ugly fact is books are made out of books,’ he says. ‘The novel depends for its life on the novels that have been written.' "Cormac McCarthy is expert in generating an emotional climate, in suggesting instead of in stating, in creating a long succession of brief, dramatic scenes described with flashing visual impact" (The New York Times). Very faint shadow toward upper edge of each sheet where affixed to mat, otherwise very good. Wilbur scripsit," and inscribed by him to two close friends at Wesleyan, Kit and Joe Reed, dated 1 March 1965.
