        Broadside Proof]: Dog's Death

Printed in Harvard Yard by The Adams House and Lowell House Printers, [Cambridge, Massachusetts] 1965 - Uncorrected proof of this broadside. Measuring 8.5" x 16.75". One central horizontal crease that is sound, two other very faint horizontal creases, slight age-toning to the cheaper paper, near fine. Signed by Updike. Our source got the proof directly from Updike. The "published" version of the broadside was issued in an edition of 100 numbered copies Signed by the author. Updike's first broadside, a devastating poem about a lost pet, distributed on a single day at Harvard, and long considered one of the rarest, if not the rarest of Updike's "A" items. De Bellis and Broomfield A15.A. Rare. Presumably only a few copies of the proof would have been pulled, and fewer still distributed. [Attributes: First Edition]

Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1965.. Octavo, cloth. First edition of this combination. First printing with code "G39" at bottom of page 426. Collects THE PUPPET MASTERS (1951) and WALDO AND MAGIC, INC. (1950). This title was mainly prepared as a selection for Doubleday's Science Fiction Book Club; only a small number of copies of this trade edition were produced, largely for the library market. It is among the most difficult to acquire of Heinlein's trade publications. Doubleday's review slip laid in. A fine copy in fine dust jacket ("$5.95" printed at upper right corner of the front flap) with a touch of dust soiling to rear panel. A sharp copy of the elusive trade issue of this book. (#157546)

Grand Prix (Archive of 4 oversize photographs from the set of the 1966 film)

N.p.: N.p., 1965. Archive of four vintage black-and-white double weight still photographs from the 1966 film. Shot and struck by special photographer John Bryson. The photographs feature Frankenheimer, actor James Garner, and cinematographer Lionel Linden. Bryson was a photojournalist for Life magazine and many other publications, and was also a noted character actor, most notable for his appearance as a derelict in the films of Sam Peckinpah ("The Getaway," "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia," and others). In "Grand Prix," the photographer broke the fourth wall and actually played himself, in addition to actually shooting on the set. Shot on location in England, Belgium, France, Monaco, Italy, the Netherlands, and California. Photographs vary in size, between 9 x 9.5 inches and 14.25 x 9.5 inches. A couple of small stains at the margins, and one photo with a corner crease. Very Good to Near Fine overall.

      1. 27,4 x 21,4 cm. Eén blad. Alleen recto. Gesigneerd 'GerardKvanhetReve' en gedateerd 'Greonterp Post Oudega Wijmbritseradeel Friesland/ 5 maart 1965'. 12 regels tekst. 2. 27,4 x 21,4 cm. Eén blad. Alleen recto. Want als men staande naamvalsverbuigingen bezigt, moet men ze korrekt toepassen, & tijd is mannelijk'.

A Fine Madness (Original screenplay for the 1966 film, in the original studio binder)

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1965. Final script for the 1966 film. Bound in the original 3-ring binder from Warner Bros. Pictures, with their stamp on the front. Laid in are several leaves detailing cast and staff lists, as well as company credits, including each department (music, makeup, fire, television) used for the film, with several notations in holograph ink and in pencil. Based on Elliott Baker's comedic novel, about Samson Shillitoe (Connery), a frustrated poet lives with Rhoda (Woodward), a trustworthy waitress. When his writing proves to be too troublesome, Samson sees a psychiatrist, at the behest of Rhoda, and his philandering continues. Connery starred in "Goldfinger" just two years prior (1964), and the same charm and wit he eschewed as James Bond is seen in his Samson. Navy blue faux leather three-ring studio binder, with Warner Bros. studio credits printed in white on the front panel. Distribution page present, with receipt intact. Title page present, dated 8/27/65, with credits for screenwriter and novelist Baker. 157 leaves, with an additional 40 leaves of staff and cast contact lists laid in at the rear, mimeograph on eye-rest green stock, with blue, white, and white onionskin revision pages throughout, dated variously between 8/30/65 and 11/29/65. Pages about Near Fine, binder Very Good plus.

Vol 2: viii, IV-1 thru IV-57 [Inertial Measurement Units and Pulse Torquing by John E. Miller ] + V-1 thru V-45 [ Optical Measurements and Navigation Phenomena by D. Alexander Koso ] + VI-1 thru VI-84 [ Guidance Computer Design by Dr. Albert Hopkins ] + VII-1 through VII-66 [ Space Vehicle Control Systems by Dr. Wallace E. Vander Velde ] + [2 - distribution list]. Wraps. The Apollo Guidance System was designed and built by a small group of contractors under the initial direction of MIT's Instrumentation Laboratory. By Feb of 1964, as the project started to move from laboratory design to production designs and consideration, the project structure was changed. AC Spark Plug (one of the contractors which was reorganized and re-branded AC Electronics in early 1965) became the principal contractor, with the Raytheon Company and Kollsman Instrument Corporation as it's subcontractors. MIT would still have primary responsibility for system design and analysis. On October 14, 1964, the first Apollo "guidance system completed acceptance testing and was shipped at 11:30 p.m. and arrived at Downey, California, early the following day. AC [Electronics] reported that in more than 2,000 hours of operation they had found the system to be "remarkably reliable, accurate and simple to operate." This moved the project past development and into the production phase. (the above timeline derived from the GM Heritage Center) No doubt elated at their success, the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory (with some limited support but not approval of NASA) presented a group of papers at Wiesbaden, Germany and Brussels, Belgium in June of 1965 under the sponsorship of NATO's Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development. Prepared under DSR Project 55-238, sponsored by the Manned Spacecraft Center of NASA through Contract NAS 9-4065. The two volumes offered here are effectively the pre-prints for those talks - direct from the inventors so to speak. The topics covered pretty much tell the story here. These scientists were presenting cutting edge theories "fresh from the oven" for the space program based on land based rockets and other ballistics research, with the goal of enabling us to reach the moon and back. Cradle period work, important in many ways. Part of the stated emphasis was on the multi-disciplinary aspects of the challenges presented. The MIT Instrumentation Laboratory had many personnel intimately involved in core Apollo program research and could speak with some authority on the matter. A controlled distribution document, this copy being number 124 of an unknown total number. Scarce, with only 6 copies in OCLC.

NY: Filmmaker's Cinematheque, [1965]. Original 18 x 8 inch placard printed in thick blue ink on blue stock. Two old creases from folding, some minor wear and a couple of small tears, else very good. A beautiful and uncommon piece of avant garde cinema history.

Sala Gaspar, Barcelone, 1965. sheets loose as issued in a linen-covered solander box, the title printed on the uppers The complete portfolio, comprising thirteen lithographs printed in colors, each signed in pencil and numbered from an edition of 30 with title page, justification and list of plates, this copy numbered xxx, printed by Jacques Desjobert, Paris on B.F.K. Rives paper, the full sheets printed to the edges. Done by Clavé as a tribute to El Greco to celebrate the 350 anniversary of his death. I remember that Clavé told us how moved he was by the work of El Greco, and particularly by the power of Nobleman with a Hand on his Chest. On the occasion of the publication of an album about Clavé's reinterpretation of El Greco, we travelled with him to Toledo and followed him on visits to all the museums where El Greco's work was on display. On seeing the great masterpieces, Clavé was just as awed as any other museum visitor. In 1963 he undertook a series of large canvases, as well as lithographs and etchings, on the theme of Tribute to Domenikos Theotokopoulos. In 1965, Clavé moved to the south of France. His tapisseries-assemblages were presented at the Sala Gaspar in Barcelona at the same time as Tribute to Domenikos Theotokopoulos. ("Clavé solitario y azul" by Josep Casamartina).

        Spectro-Mach 1 production archive

New York: Filmmakers' Cinematheque, 1965. An archive of two original posters for Don Snyder's multi-media presentation, "Spectro-Mach 1," along with extensive manuscript notations, diagrams, and charts. Instructions include visual and aural cues for projectionists and musicians, detailed instructions for presentation sequence (numbered 1 to 13 across the versos of the two posters), random project development notations, and a handwritten note with event information. "Spectro-Mach 1" was a largely undocumented collaborative multimedia performance developed by Don Snyder, featuring poet and musician Angus MacLise, Ralph Metzner, co-author of "The Psychedelic Experience," and John Cale. Inspired by the psychedelic environments of Gerd Stern and Michael Callahan's "USCO," Snyder incorporated minimalist music, similar to MacLise and Cale's work with Theatre of Eternal Music, with hypnotic visuals and repetitive actions. This work proved influential on Andy Warhol's "Up-Tight," which premiered at the Filmmakers' Cinematheque two months later. Snyder was a prolific and highly influential photographer. His most famous collection of photographs, "Aquarian Odyssey" (Liveright, 1979), chronicles utopian communities in New York, New England, and San Francisco in the 1960s and the personalities that fueled them, but it narrowly represents his career, which was furiously active and varied since his start in the late 50s. He was also regarded as a master printer, and struck photographs for Eugene Smith, Diane Arbus, and Gerard Malanga. Posters 9 x 14.5 inches, letterpress, folded. Typescripts 8.5 x 11 inches, folded. Manuscript cue charts 8.5 x 11 inches. Event information sheet 4 x 4 inches. All material is supple, with some expected wear from use, Very Good overall. Gerard Malanga, "Don Snyder, 1934-2010," Berkshire Fine Arts.
