        Ariel

London: Faber and Faber, 1965. London: Faber and Faber, 1965 First edition, first printing. Publisher's red cloth, lettered in gilt; in the original yellow dust jacket. Near fine, with a hint of wear to the extremities, a few light spots to the free endpapers, otherwise bright and fresh pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear to the extremities, a few minor nicks to the spine head, a hint of toning to the spine, a short closed tear to the bottom edge of the rear panel, minor traces of light spotting and faint soiling to the otherwise bright panels. Overall, a near fine copy. Ariel is Plath's second collection of poetry and the first to be published posthumously. This first British edition was edited by her husband Ted Hughes and published in 1965, two years after the author's suicide. Hughes included a rearrangement of the poems in Plath's Ariel manuscript, but chose to replace twelve of the poems with some of Plath's later writings. The first American edition, first published in 1966, includes three poems not included in this edition, as well as an additional introduction by poet Robert Lowell. Ariel contains poetry that is markedly different than Plath's first anthology, The Colossus and Other Poems (1960). As Lowell explains in his introduction to the American edition, "Everything in these poems is personal, confessional, felt, but the manner of feeling is controlled hallucination, the autobiography of a fever… She is driven forward by the pounding pistons of her heart." While Colossus shows the young poet's "laborious shyness," Ariel contains rapidly produced, unfiltered poems that provide insight into Plath's psyche at the end of her life and show her true talent and ability for verse.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Aspects of the Theory of Syntax

Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press, 1965. Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press,, 1965. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt. Cloth very lightly rubbed and scuffed. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. From the library of early computer scientist Nathaniel Rochester, with his contemporary ownership inscription to the front free endpaper. Noam Chomsky's revolutionary linguistics work was enthusiastically received by many computer scientists, and influenced the development of computer languages and artificial intelligence. This volume's owner, Nathaniel Rochester (1919–2001), was an IBM computer engineer who developed the concept of symbolic assembly language programming; was the chief architect for the IBM 700 series, including the firm's first computer for scientific applications (701) and their first mass-produced general purpose computer (702); and did pioneering research on artificial intelligence, heading the IBM team that studied pattern recognition and information theory during the 1950s. The copy of Chomsky's "Three models for the description of language" in Hook & Norman's Origins of Cyberspace (number 532) belonged to Rochester. A superb association.

        Null Harold Miller 1916-1996

        The House of Warne

sp;- London - Frederick Warne and Co Inc., 1965. sp;- London - Frederick Warne and Co Inc., 1965 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A beautifully illustrated celebration of one hundred years of publisher Frederick Warne and Co. With black and white photograph of Warneto frontispiece and numerous colour plates and black and white illustrations throughout, including a facsimile of the first page of Beatrix Potter&#39;s letter to Noel Moore. First edition. Frederick Warne & Co was a British publishing firm famous for children&#39;s books, particularly those of Beatrix Potter. It was founded in 1865 by a bookseller, who gave his own name to the firm. During the second half of the nineteenth century, Warne&#39;s firm built a reputation based upon its children&#39;s list, publishing illustrated books by such well-known authors and artists as Edward Lear, Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane. Toward the end of the century, Frederick Warne retired and handed the management of the business over to his three sons, Harold, Fruing, and Norman. Warne was among the six publishers to whom Beatrix Potter submitted her first book, the story of a rabbit called Peter. As did the other five, Warne turned the proposal down. People at the company changed their minds, however, when they saw the privately printed edition of the book in 1901. They offered to publish it if Potter redid the illustrations in colour. The next year, Warne published The Tale of Peter Rabbit, and by Christmas had sold 20,000 copies. Thus began a forty-year partnership that saw the publication of twenty-two additional Little Books and the development of a flourishing merchandising program, the first of its kind based on a children&#39;s book. Condition: In a lovely cloth binding with colour and gold illustrations to boards, in a protective brodart wrapper. Externally, in excellent condition with only minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and clean throughout. Overall: FINE.

        Charades (lithographs by Jacob Landau)

New York and San Francisco: Associated American Artists and Tamarind Lithography Workshop, 1965 - LANDAU'S RAREST AND MOST IMPORTANT GRAPHIC SERIES. This is a suite of 10 haunting and enigmatic original lithographs by Jacob Landau, each one justified and signed in pencil by the artist. From an edition of 20 sets printed on fine BFK Rives wove paper, this is set 20/20. Additionally signed by Landau in the colophon. Furthermore, this is an outstanding association copy, with Landau's signed presentation inscription to Sylvan and Lilyan Cole. Sylvan Cole (1918-2005) was the most important dealer in American prints of his (or any) generation, and as director of Associated American Artists he published and sold many of Landau's prints. Lilyan was his second wife. *** "I did a suite of lithographs called Charades I associated the name Charades with what Goya had called Caprichos, riddles, puzzles. He also did a series called Proverbs, where he picked up on sayings that were common in the land, but dealt with them in mysterious, puzzling ways. And, I dealt with what came out of my obsessions, things that I did not fully understand. Fear of death, for instance, and a sort of frustrated feeling of love. These are obsessions that manifest themselves in various ways and images. The reason they seem to appeal to others is because apparently other people share some of the same obsessions. That&#146;s where the archetypal aspect comes in." --Jacob Landau. *** Folio. FINE AND BRIGHT WITH NO DEFECTS. Housed in the original cloth folding case, by Schuberth Bookbindery of San Francisco. An outstanding item. Since all of the lithographs are signed, most sets have been broken up. This set, however, was in Sylvan Cole's private collection from the day it was presented to him by the artist until his death in June, 2005. IMPORTANT NOTE: During March, 2006, hundreds of prints represented as being from "the Sylvan Cole collection" were sold at public auction. In fact, ALL of these items were from his leftover gallery inventory, not his private collection. As far as I know, the few items I offer from Sylvan's collection are the ONLY items anywhere on the market which are actually from his private collection (which he kept in his apartment, not his gallery). I acquired them all directly from Sylvan (my uncle), mainly in spring, 2005. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Sketchbook

. containing 80 b/w and coloured "automatic drawings" drawn in Florence 1965. Richard Mortensen (1910-1993) is without doubt the artist who has been most important for the development of the abstract art in Denmark - as an artist as well as writer and educator. He was one of the persons taking initative in starting the group Linien and the periodical with the same name. Also internationally he asserted himself strongly, especially during his residence in Paris 1947-1963 where he exhibited at Denise Rene. Beyond his paintings, Mortensen, strongly inspired by Kandinsky, made a series of automatic drawings which in harmony with the theories of psychoanalysis arised as messages from the unconscious mind. These drawings could be conclusive works of art, or they could be used as material for the painting. <br>This collection should, according to the information received, come from the late Copenhagener artdealer Hybler, who in the 1960ies had close connection to Galerie Denise Rene in Paris and who also was artdealer for Richard Mortensen. According to the same source the collection was done, spontaneously, when Mortensen received the information of the sudden death of his friend Jean Corbusiers..

Very scarce bootleg edition (presumed) of this collection of writings by folk rock music star Bob Dylan. Foreword by Stephen Pickering. The English issue appeared with only four of the epitaphs, numbers 1,2,6 and 7. OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD formed part of the programme notes for the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Condition of this volume is very good indeed. Light toning to spine, but otherwise in clean unmarked condition. Stapled illustrated wrappers. Quite scarce Dylaniana.
