Philadelphia: Chilton Books, (1965). First edition. Herbert's best-known novel was awarded the first Nebula Award in 1965, shared a Hugo Award in 1966, and was the basis for the film by David Lynch. Regarded as one of the most popular science fiction novels of all time, Dune is a vast, complex story incorporating elements of "hard" science fiction, fantasy, mythology, religion and politics, and set on an exotic planet, the flora and fauna of which are fully realized and described. The combination of its size and popularity, coupled with its having been published by a house better known for its automobile repair manuals, have made this book rather difficult to obtain in fine condition. This is a nearly fine copy in pale blue cloth with heavy gray textured endpapers. The first issue dust jacket, with $5.95 price intact and four-line publisher's information on rear flap, shows only slight rubbing to corners and a few tiny nicks to extremities.

The Madrid Suite (Complete in Original Folio)

New York: Hollander Workshop, 1965. First Edition. Fine. Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) writes in the introduction to the set that he was inspired to do this series by his honeymoon in Madrid in 1958 with his then-wife, the artist Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011). The texture of the plaster walls in their hotel presented an interesting surface on which to draw, making the lines appear like dots and reminiscent of Seurat. In creating this series, inspired by his time in Madrid, Motherwell was able to reproduce the feel of those drawings by using Hollander's plaster walls in the same way, drawing on lithographic transfer paper. An extremely rare edition of Motherwell's work, the lithographs were often broken up and sold individually. An important piece by the man who came up with the title "The New York School" which referred not only to him, but fellow abstract expressionist painters Philip Guston, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. [11] pp. Elephant Folio. Housed in custom brown linen folio with title pasted to front panel with Motherwell's name and initials also blind embossed to center of label. Interleaved with tissue; all lithographs, tissues, and folio case in pristine condition. Suite consists of ten (10) black & white lithographs printed on white Arches paper measuring 22" x 30". This is edition #31 of 100. Each lithograph is signed and numbered by Motherwell and includes the blind embossed logo of Irwin Hollander (the master-printer) in the lower right corner.

        A Spaniard in the Works

Cape, UK 1965 - 1st Edition 1965. A lovely example of Lennon's second book with his autograph/signed name to the endpaper. Very rare book to be signed and un-dedicated. John Lennon's autograph at the height of Beatle mania was very difficult to obtain. His previous book 'In His Own Write' had a signing session at Foyles in 1964 so the book appears more regular albeit as a reprint. He did not undertake any such commercial signing sessions for this book so they very rarely appear on the open market. Excellent provenance will be made available when purchased. Book is near fine and in lovely square tight condition. Nice sharp corners. A few very light foxing spots to odd pages. Pages very nice and clean. Never issued with a wrapper. A cracking example.       (n. p.):: National Lead Company,. (n. d.).. Elephant folio. 21" x 15". 1st printing, ca 1965. 56 pp.. Red & black heavy boards with screw post binding. Individualized firm name on cover: General Appliance and Hardware.. Light wear to binding, faint foxing at bottom edge of supplement. page. A VG example.. The Dutch Boy Paint Company, originally founded in 1907 by the National Lead Company, used this album to advertise and promote their line of products in stores where paint products were sold. Beneath every bright and cheerful illustration are specifics on paint shades, tones, color schemes and texture blending, and details on decorating techniques for dream homes. American advertising had mastered the art of selling "lifestyle" by the 1960s and this album depicts suburban living at its finest moment. Illustrations are taken directly from aricles in "Better Homes and Gardens" and "American Home". Many of the pictures are large enough to see fascinating period details of kitchenware, appliances, furniture, art, and decorative objects on sideboards and coffee tables. Most scenes are photographs but many illustrations are artists' renderings. The chatty text discusses ways to glamorize brick, update an old-fashioned white bathroom, use practical colors in areas such as "the lanai", decorate bedroom walls "to please youngsters", and create visually soothing tones in restful rooms. Exterior color is also promoted in artful ways. In many examples jauntily clad people are busy in their lovely homes cooking or arranging flowers, watching television or sitting neatly in their colonial armchairs surrounded by harmonized paint tones. The gracious life is clearly enhanced by the home color palettes depicted and explained in this practical guide. Includes a one page Color Gallery Supplement update of product information (bound in at front of album) and a two page guide: "Twelve Beautiful Ways to Finish Redwood" by the California Redwood Association, which shows close-up views of various paint stain, carpet, and curtain combinations. Rare trade catalogue from this well-known paint manufacturer. We find no copies listed on OCLC. . Pasted-down and tipped in color illustrations.

Swift and the Church of England

Oxford Clarenden Press. Hardcover. Dust jacket condition: VG-. Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. Jacket sunned at spine with just a touch of edgewear. SWIFT was an active churchman for more than forty years?and one of unusual prominence. To those who know him primarily in his other roles?literary genius, pamphleteer of Queen Anne's last ministry, and Irish patriot?and merely take for granted his clerical career, the scope and interest of this neglected aspect of his life may come as a surprise. Usiing many new documents and sources, Professor Landa has written a detailed account of Swift as a member of the Irish Establishment. The book relates Swift's rise from obscure cleric to Dean of St. Patrick's, his stormy relations with the Cathedral chapter, his struggle to defend church and clergy against designing prelates and laity.         The Man With the Golden Gun

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1965. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine gilt, gun device to upper board gilt, patterned endpapers. With the dust jacket. Housed in black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine slightly rolled, a few light spots to edges and a mild stain to lower margin of the first few leaves; otherwise a superb copy in excellent condition, in the very lightly rubbed price-clipped jacket, somewhat spotted to verso but presenting very nicely. First edition, first impression, the first state binding with the gun device blocked in gilt on the upper board: the scarcest issue of any of the James Bond books. In keeping with the design of the other Bond titles an appropriate device was stamped onto the upper board - in this case, a golden gun. However for reasons either of expense or practicality this was abandoned very early in the binding run. Copies with the gun therefore constitute the first state and are very uncommon.

Autograph manuscript signed: Julius Robert Mayer:Die Entdeckung des Gesetzes der Erhaltung der Energie

1965. Gerlach, Walther (1889-1979). Julius Robert Mayer: Die Entdeckung der Erhaltung der Energie. Autograph Manuscript Draft, signed. 4-1/3 pp., written in pencil and ballpoint pen on rectos of 5 sheets; sheets stapled together in upper left corner. Munich, January 21, 1965. 300 x 212 mm. Creased where previously folded, very slight wear and soiling. Very good. English translation included.Draft of Gerlach's lecture commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Julius Robert Mayer, one of the founders of the principle of the conservation of energy-the first law of thermodynamics. Gerlach, "contributed to many experimental topics, especially the ones connected with radiation and quantum theory (e.g. together with Alice Golsen, he determined the pressure of light quantitatively); he made important contributions to the development of modern methods of chemical spectral analysis, the physics of the (technical) magnetization curve, and measurements on artificial and natural radioactivity" (Mehra & Rechenberg, I, p. 436). He is best known as one of the discoverers of the Stern-Gerlach effect (1922), by which Otto Stern and Gerlach demonstrated the empirical validity of Sommerfeld's spatial quantization; i.e., the discrete orientation in space of electronic orbits. The effect is created by passing an atomic beam of silver atoms through a magnetic field of strong inhomogeneity, which splits the silver beam into two separate beams. "This result then proved space quantization as well as once again confirming the existence of stationery states. However, it also went far beyond the Bohr-Sommerfeld theory, as Einstein and Paul Ehrenfest demonstrated by their calculation of the time needed by the silver atoms to be oriented in the two directions: they estimated a time for the (classical) magnetic interaction of 1011 s, in contrast to the observation-which gave a time of less than 10-4 s. Thus one of the bases of the existing atomic theory broke down" (Twentieth Century Physics I, pp. 164-65).The energy-conservation principle was arrived at more or less simultaneously in the mid-19th century by a number of scientists, the most important being Helmholtz, Joule and Mayer, but Mayer was the first, as Helmholtz acknowledged, to articulate a general law of energy conservation. Gerlach's lecture gives a brief history of Mayer's discovery and its reception:The law of conservation of energy, first understood empirically by [Mayer], is the fundamental principle of rational natural science and technology. It can be stated that the entire area of natural science research is governed by the validity of the energy law throughout the inanimate and animate world, through the macro- and micro-cosmos, through the technical utilization of apparent matter such as the insight into elementary particles, through cosmic processes, and within living cells. . . .It is thus no coincidence that Mayer as well as Helmholtz, who established the energy theorem five years after [Mayer] in his writings on the conservation of force, making use of the same considerations, but with different motivation, came not from physics but from physiology. In it the picture of a life force dominated, even though it was perceived as being unsatisfactory, which was supposed to control processes in the organic realm, as mechanical force did in inanimate nature. After unfavorable experiences with "natural philosophy", that blurry mixture, physicists rejected generalizations and extrapolations for fear of allowing it [natural philosophy] back in again. Therefore, Poggendorff also did not print Helmholtz, in the Annalen der Physik, and Helmholtz said in 1854 that Robert Mayer was the first one who had dared to state such a general law. . . .In 1842 Mayer calculated the mechanical equivalent of heat from the Dulong-Petit experiments, and with it the low efficiency of the steam engine, whose principle of operation he was the first to explain correctly through the consumption of heat as the equivalent of the work produced, . . .Mayer's accomplishment was not recognized for a long time. Helmholtz, and Joule as well, rejected his arguments, unjustly criticized the calculation of the heat, and unqualified individuals ridiculed him in public. Only Clausius quoted Mayer's first work and the equivalent as a first principle of his thermodynamics in 1850. But at that time Mayer became seriously mentally ill. Only now did the energy law establish itself in the thought process of natural science. The Basel chemist Schoenbein referred to Mayer's accomplishment in 1858, and Justus Liebig praised him as the father of the greatest discovery of the century. A rapid sequence of the highest honors then followed. How Robert Mayer arrived at his idea-some kind of a brainstorm on his trip to Surabaya in the summer of 1840-and even more how the self-taught physicist found the decisive experiments in the literature that were needed for his new concept, how he properly described the steam engine quantitatively, against all [prevailing] opinions-all this belongs to the mysteries about which Johannes Kepler said: "It seems to me that the paths by which men come to understand heavenly things are almost as remarkable as the nature of these things themselves."Offered with Gerlach's manuscript is a copy of Alwin Mittasch's Kraft-Leben-Geist: Eine Lese aus Robert Mayers Schriften (1942), published to commemorate the centennial of Mayer's discovery of the law of energy conservation.

        The Homecoming

London: Methuen & Co.. (1965). First. First edition. Fine in fine, very lightly rubbed dustwrapper. Inscribed by Pinter to Vivien Merchant, the lead (and only) actress in the play, and also his wife: "June 1965 To Vivien. Thank you! David." Pinter was an actor as well, and here uses his stage name, which was David Baron. The Homecoming won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1967, and Merchant was nominated for Best Actress. As good an association as is possible in what is probably the Nobel Prize-winning playwright's best-known, and commercially most successful drama. .
