        FOR KICKS

London: Michael Joseph, (1965).. London:: Michael Joseph. (1965). First edition. His third mystery. SIGNED by Francis on the title page. Faintest ring marks on front cover, page edges darkened with subtle mottling (not immediately noticeable and not extending to margins), otherwise would be near fine; in good or better dust jacket, which presents better than it sounds -- rubbed, flattened creasing at base of spine and narrow line at middle, few small chips and tears, and extensive staining to the verso, which fortunately is only outwardly visible on the rear panel.

        Chizu -- The Map.

Bijutsu Shuppansha 1965 - This is a copy of the original, first edition from 1965. Octavo (230 x 150 mm). 49 black and white photographs, 23 4-panel black and white gatefolds, folded broadside (by Kenzaburo Oe) on brown paper laid-in. Original black paper-covered boards, original illustrated dust-jacket (slight tear and a few mm loss at the base of the spine of the jacket) printed recto and verso, original printed die-cut paper chemise. This copy does not include the rare outermost cardboard slipcase. Additionally, a number of pages of this extremely fragile book have come loose from the binding, although all pages are present. The book was originally bound (in 1965) in a very delicate manner, with the pages essentially glued into the binding, thus frequently pages come loose in copies of this work. This is still a very clean and collectible copy of arguably the most desirable and rare Japanese photobook, which has significant impact when the book is read. An important addition to any private or publicly held book collection. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Printing Plate]: Hear Martin Luther King. Rally on Human Rights Day, December 10 to Benefit South African Victims of Apartheid...

American Committee on Africa New York: American Committee on Africa [1965]. Large printing plate. Measuring 12.25" 16.25". Zinc[?] printing plate mounted on hardwood (probably cherry). A little rubbing else very near fine; eyelet and wire on verso presumably used to hang on a wall. Printing plate for an apparently lost poster. The rally at Hunter College featured Dr. King, Leon Bibb, Miriam Makeba, H. E. Achkar Marof (Guinea's Representative to the U.N. and head of the U.N. Committee on Apartheid), Pete Seeger, and an unnamed South African exile. The goal of the event was to raise money for the legal defense of political prisoners and support the families of South African men in jail, which at the time would have included Nelson Mandela. While a leaflet for the event exists with similar (but not identical) text but with different layout, we could find no evidence of examples of this larger poster or broadside. A unique artifact showing the intersection of the Civil Rights and Anti-Apartheid Movements.

The position of a chair, the length of a pause, the choice of a gesture, I realized, could convey volumes." (John Lahr, The New Yorker)

Cambridge, MA: , 1965. Cambridge, MA, 1965. unbound. Highly controversial offering of two letters signed on picture postcards depicting Gropius' initial design and also the completed structure of the acclaimed Entrance Gatehouse and Arch, University of Baghdad. Written to Nazi war criminal and former editor of "Der Spiegel" Horst Mahnke, an SS Lieutenant assigned to Office VII which served as an advance party for the dreaded Einsatzgruppen B. It bears a salutation and signature written by Gropius' wife, Ilse: Greetings...and Best Wishes." The great architect added his own signature underneath. The second postcard shows a photo of the completed structure, University of Bagdad, 4.25 x 5.75 inches, Cambridge, December 8, 1965. Ilse has written and signed the salutation: "Best wishes to all the Mahnkes...with love from I. Gropius." Again Gropius signed beneath his wife's signature: "und Walt Gropius." Both postcards are in very good condition. German architect and founder of the Bauhaus School who was forced to flee Germany due to opposition by the Nazis in 1934.
