THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN

Cape , 1965. Cape , 1965. First edition, first state binding with the publisher's golden gun embossed on the front panel. A fine copy, with a little foxing to the page edges and a biro mark to the front pastedown, but with the susceptible large area of gilt bright and untarnished, in a fine (price-clipped) dustwrapper. All Fleming's previous novels have a decorated front board, and it was the publisher's intention to do the same with this book. A decision was made, very early in the process, that to block the whole print run with such a large expanse of foil, would be financially prohibitive. "According to the publisher's book production files... the original estimate allowed for just four and a half square inches of foil-stamping [the executed design measured nearly nineteen square inches]... The decision to cease stamping a golden gun was purely economical..." - Gilbert (Ian Fleming The Bibliography). Also according to publisher's records, 940 copies were thus blocked, a larger number than had previously been thought (though still a tiny proportion of the 82,000 copies of the first edition printed). The reason for its apparent extreme scarcity was that being the earliest copies, they were all sent to the colonies, principally Australia and South Africa. Nevertheless it remains by far the scarcest recognised discreet state of any James Bond book. Gilbert A31a1.1

I have fought against White domination and I have fought against Black domination. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Books signed by McCarthy are uncommon, especially his earlier novels. The novels of Cormac McCarthy owe much to William Faulkner, especially in their "use of dialect and concrete sense of the world— a debt McCarthy does not dispute. 'The ugly fact is books are made out of books,' he says. 'The novel depends for its life on the novels that have been written.' "Cormac McCarthy is expert in generating an emotional climate, in suggesting instead of in stating, in creating a long succession of brief, dramatic scenes described with flashing visual impact" (The New York Times).

        The House of Warne

sp;- London - Frederick Warne and Co Inc., 1965. sp;- London - Frederick Warne and Co Inc., 1965 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A beautifully illustrated celebration of one hundred years of publisher Frederick Warne and Co. With black and white photograph of Warneto frontispiece and numerous colour plates and black and white illustrations throughout, including a facsimile of the first page of Beatrix Potter's letter to Noel Moore. First edition. Frederick Warne & Co was a British publishing firm famous for children's books, particularly those of Beatrix Potter. It was founded in 1865 by a bookseller, who gave his own name to the firm. During the second half of the nineteenth century, Warne's firm built a reputation based upon its children's list, publishing illustrated books by such well-known authors and artists as Edward Lear, Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane. Toward the end of the century, Frederick Warne retired and handed the management of the business over to his three sons, Harold, Fruing, and Norman. Warne was among the six publishers to whom Beatrix Potter submitted her first book, the story of a rabbit called Peter. As did the other five, Warne turned the proposal down. People at the company changed their minds, however, when they saw the privately printed edition of the book in 1901. They offered to publish it if Potter redid the illustrations in colour. The next year, Warne published The Tale of Peter Rabbit, and by Christmas had sold 20,000 copies. Thus began a forty-year partnership that saw the publication of twenty-two additional Little Books and the development of a flourishing merchandising program, the first of its kind based on a children's book. Condition: In a lovely cloth binding with colour and gold illustrations to boards, in a protective brodart wrapper. Externally, in excellent condition with only minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and clean throughout. Overall: FINE.
