Minor flaws in blank margins. Fine condition.Inscribed by Fleet Admiral Nimitz ""To Dr. E.R. Lewis - with best wishes and great appreciation of your generous courtesy / in presenting to me a personalized copy of your very important work - 'A HISTORY OF / SAN FRANCISCO HARBOR DEFENSE INSTALLATIONS'. C.W. Nimitz Fleet Admiral, U.S. Navy.""In this unique signed photograph taken during the surrender ceremonies on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, September 2, 1945, Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief, Pacific, and Pacific Ocean Areas, is signing the Instrument of Surrender as the Japanese representatives, who have already signed, stand at attention. Standing immediately behind Fleet Admiral Nimitz are, left to right, Rear Admiral Forrest Sherman, Deputy Chief of Staff to Admiral Nimitz; Admiral William F. Halsey, Commander, Third Fleet; and General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Allied Commander. In this image, after the Japanese representatives signed the surrender document, Admiral Nimitz signed as ""United States Representative."" As Nimitz signs, Admiral Halsey is whispering into General MacArthur's ear as MacArthur puts his arm on Halsey's back. Most probably because Halsey is speaking to MacArthur as Admiral Nimitz signed and there are so many photographs of the signing from all angles picturing the three officers standing at attention behind Nimitz, this image itself is rare.""A History of San Francisco Harbor Defense Installations"" by Dr. Emanuel Raymond Lewis (1928-2014) was published by the California Division of Beaches & Parks in 1965. Fleet Admiral Nimitz died in 1966. E.R. Lewis was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps, but it was abolished shortly after his commission. He was then transferred to Military Intelligence where he served form 1954-1956. He was the longest serving and final House Librarian for the U.S. House of Representatives Library in the U.S. Capitol Building. Lewis was appointed House Librarian in 1973, and served in this position until January 1995, at which time the Library, along with the House Historical Office, were reorganized and placed under the new Legislative Resource Center, a division of the Office of the Office of the Clerk. As House Librarian, in July 1974, Lewis provided critical historical references to guide the House Judiciary Committee in its work during its hearings for the impeachment the President."

Space-time approach to quantum electrodynamics" WITH "The Theory of Positrons" in: Physical Review, Vol. 76, 1949, pp. 769-89 and 749-59

FIRST EDITION of Feynman's literal "reformation of quantum mechanics itself;" claiming "that he could not understand standard quantum theory and had to recreate it on his own, Feynman's famous diagrams, introduced and developed here for the first time, "elegantly rewrite quantum theory" (American National Biography; Peacock, The Quantum Revolution, 102). This volume includes a plethora of other works of significance: Richard Feynman's "Theory of Positrons", "On the Origin of Elements " by Maria Mayer and Edward Teller; Giulio Racah "Theory of Complex Spectra" and work by Shockley, Bratten, Bardeen, Pearson, Shul, Schwinger, Zener and so many others. Of the three pivotal formulations of quantum mechanics, Feynman's was the third, following Heisenberg's matrix formulation and Schrodinger's wave equation formulation; Feynman's is the third formulation. Feynman's path integral formulation was "another way of thinking about QED that is probably as visualizable as any theory of quantum fields is ever going to be, and relatively easy to calculate with. The key idea was to represent every possible particle interaction with a space-time diagram. Photon wordlines (their trajectories through spacetime) are represented by wavy lines, while particles such as electrons and positrons are straight lines or curves" (Peacock, The Quantum Revolution, 102). "The dramatic discovery that Feynman made is that the space-time description of a positron moving forward in time is EXACTLY equivalent to the same mathematical description of an electron moving backward through time along the same track in the Feynman diagram. In addition, because photons are their own antiparticles, there is no difference in this description between a photon moving forward in time and one moving backward in time… An electron proceeding through space and time meets an energetic photon, absorbs it, and is scattered backward BACKWARD IN TIME until it emits an energetic photon and recoils in such a way that it moves forward in time again. Instead of three particles, two electrons, and a positron in a complicated dance, we have one particle, one electron that zigzags its way through space AND time, colliding with photons here and there along the way. Feynman (along with Tomonaga and Schwinger) won the 1965 Nobel Prize "for their fundamental work in quantum electrodynamics, with deep-ploughing consequences for the physics of elementary particles" (Nobel Foundation). CONDITION & DETAILS: Full volume. Lancaster: American Physical Society. 4to (10.75 x 8 inches; 268 x 200mm). Continuously paginated pp.1934. Feynman papers pp. 769-789 and pp. 749-759. Ex-libris with no markings at the spine whatsoever. There is a small stamp on the front flyleaf and title page; a handsome pictorial bookplate on the front paste down. Illustration: In-text figures throughout. Exterior: Bound in tan cloth with a gilt-lettered spine; very slight rubbing at the edges; minor indentations on cover. Tightly and solidly bound. The interior is bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition.

        The End of the Game

New York: Viking (1965) - First Edition. Quarto. A fine presentation copy, lengthily INSCRIBED by Beard to former Minneapolis Institute of Arts photography curator Christian Petersen. The inscription includes a two-page hand drawing in ball point pen, a small foot print in black ink, and an interesting history of the book's publication, as follows: "Special Delivery / from C.J. Bucher in / Lucerne 1962-1963 / another uphill battle vs Helen K. Taylor / and Bryan Holme [Viking Press retards while / I was still @ school trying to do this book / .(. subsequently delayed three years)." A scrapbook of African images, text, and other musings, culled from Beard's work in Kenya in the early 1960s, and published when the photographer was only 25 years old. Sadly, much of what Beard feared and forecast has come true, adding an uncanny prescience to his apocalyptic title. (Roth 170-171, Open Book 208-209, Auer 448). A few ink smudges to the boards, tiny bump at the spine head, else near fine in a near fine jacket. Meaningful copies of the true first edition of Beard's first and most important book are uncommon.         I travestiti. Con una nota di Elvio Fachinelli. A cura di Sergio Donnabella

In - 4 (cm 24x32), pp. 164. Testi e fotografie in bianco e nero di Lisetta Carmi. Leg. edit. cartonata illustrata. / arte - travestiti - resistenti - e...]

        The Orchard Keeper

US: Random House, 1965 A Near Fine, apparently unread copy with softness at spine ends, slightest bit of splay to front board, and a couple of faint spots of foxing to front end page; in a Near Fine jacket that has slight soiling, mild curl at flap ends and a faint blue band along the top of jacket (this was apparently a production flaw on all or most of the first issue jackets) about a quarter of an inch from top edge, a very tiny chip at bottom of back flap, and a touch of sun fade to red lettering on spine. The jacket is often a problem with this title and this copy is sound but there are scored lines along the interior of jacket at the flap folds. A nice copy of McCarthy?s first novel.

Autograph Letter Signed by American Author and Nobel Prize winner JOHN STEINBECK, about Dogs (Bulldog Terriers) and Cars (the Land Rover)

1965 - STEINBECK, JOHN. (1902-1968). American author of The Grapes of Wrath; winner of the 1962 Nobel Prize for Literature. ALS. ("John"). 3pp. Folio. Sag Harbor, May 6, 1965. To pioneering advertising executive HOWARD GOSSAGE (1917-1969). (Abridged) - "Telephone conversations are for me, essentially no good. Perhaps I don't listen when I can't see who I am talking to. And even more than usual, I think of what I wanted to say, when it is over. Let's get back to names and their connotations. Rover 2000, as I said and you said doesn't mean a thing. A name should have either a visual effect or an emotional one. And because of its construction, conformation, speed and dependability, its suspension, and cornering ability, even its "down face," the name for the 2000 is obvious. Association with Angel suggests the name. Why not call it British Bull Terrier. Let me go into the reasons. The breed is English Bull Terrier but British is more sturdy. These dogs are different from others in nature, ability and looks. Unlike the setters, spaniels and pointers which came originally from Spain, the bull terrier was built in England and given its present shape about 1846. It is built like a Sherman Tank (read Centurion) and has the speed and quickness of a Spanish bull. It is a kind, comfortable and friendly animal, gentle and loving but when pushed it is a volcano of controlled, fearless and efficient fury. -- When I told you over the phone that I thought I was over extended, I meant it. Your suggestion that I be paid for comment or suggestion is not any good either for the following reasons. 1. It would be literary and 2. income. That's 10% agents and 65-70% federal and state income tax. I would have to make 3 times the price of a car to pay off everybody. Gift tax would be much less. A lease might work, but outright purchase is out of the question. In addition, I don't really need another car. It would be self indulgence which I love when I can afford it. -- Now, about the 3 litre. You say it is called the poor man's Rolls. But no one wants to be thought of as a poor man. The Rover Rolls is a short declarative sentence. And R.R. might come to agreement. If not, then litigation could be made the best possible publicity. I'm giving this far too much time when I should be working on my second draft, which I propose to get back to right now. Let me hear what you think of this." Gossage was a groundbreaking advertising executive who co-founded the agency that counted among its clients Land Rover, the Sierra Club, Qantas Airways, and Petrofina Oil Co. The agency's home was in a former firehouse; becoming a hub of intellectualism whose visitors included Buckminster Fuller and authors Tom Wolfe and Steinbeck. Our letter makes plain Steinbeck's infatuation with a Land Rover about which Gossage had asked for his opinion. Steinbeck was ever drawn to men who knew machines, like [The Grapes of Wrath character] Al Joad, who is 'one with his engine' and keeps the 'ancient overloaded Hudson' running; or Gay, 'the little mechanic of god, the St. Francis of all things that turn and twist and explode,' who repairs the Model T in Cannery Row. His deep interest in finding the appropriate automobile for his specific use culminated with the author and his poodle Charley's 1960 cross-country tour, charmingly chronicled in his final book, Travels with Charley. For the road trip he put a customized camper shell on his truck and dubbed it Rocinante (after Don Quixote's horse). The camper is on view at the John Steinbeck Center in Salinas, California. Our letter also highlights Steinbeck's love of dogs, as he suggests that the Rover 2000 model its hood ornament on his English bull terrier Angel. With the original envelope and accompanied by four Polaroid photographs (two annotated by Steinbeck on the verso) depicting Steinbeck's dog Angel and a Rover with a prototype head ornament. * All our items are sent via FedEx.         MODELES DES CARACTERES DE L'IMPRIMERIE ET DES AUTRES CHOSES NECESSAIRES AUDIT ART. NOUVELLEMENT GRAVES. With an Introduction to Pierre Simon Fournier's MODELES ... by James Mosely

London: Eugrammia Press, 1965. cloth, paper wrappers, both volumes enclosed in a slipcase. Fournier, Pierre Simon. oblong 4to. cloth, paper wrappers, both volumes enclosed in a slipcase. Facsimile of the 1742 manual accompanied by the 20 page introduction. 2 volumes. Printed in an edition limited to 600 copies. Thirty-three plates depict samples of the types cut by Fournier c. 1742 and which then appeared in his Manuel Typographique. A consummate artist and craftsman, Fournier (1712 - 1768) was one of the 18th century's finest engravers and typefounders, and his type, with its light, clean look on the printed page and great economy in text, greatly influenced Giambattista Bodoni (1740 - 1813), who later in the century popularized the more severe "modern" look. Introduction by Mosley, renowned typography professor and then librarian at the St. Bride Printing Library. Printed in collotype by Louis van Leer & Co. of Amsterdam on rag cream paper. Loosely inserted in this copy is the 12 page publisher's catalogue describing this book and others they published.

For a Renewal of Eremitism in the Monastic State

[Kentucky]: Abbey of Gethsemani. 1965. Approximately 40-page photocopied typescript essay arguing the values of eremitism (the state of being a hermit). Not directly attributed to Merton here, but with the Christogram "jhs" in the upper left corner of the first page as Merton tended to do, and collected in Collectanea Cisterciencia in 1965 [Dell'Isola C246] and later in Contemplation in a World of Action in 1971 [Dell'Isola A59]. Dated February, 1965, and thus the earliest appearance of this essay we can find. OCLC doesn't seem to list any standalone copies of it; the Thomas Merton Center lists several versions but none with exactly the same pagination and none with an explicit month identified in 1965. Mildly foxed; comb-bound in gold cardstock covers; near fine. First Edition. Softcover.
