Marion obviously hugely respectful of Stewart Wallace is contacting him to ask him for his elaboration and perspective of a comment Wallace made in one of the paragraphs of his 1927 book, The Growth of Canadian National Feeling.         Portrait photograph of President Johnson, inscribed to Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg

N.p. [Washington, D.C.], 1965. Color print, both inscription and signature beneath the image; with credit printed in the image at lower left. 10 x 8. Glazed and framed in tasteful black-and-gold wooden 16" x 19" frame. A few tiny nicks to frame, image fine. To Supreme Court Justice and UN Ambassador Arthur Goldberg The (undated) inscription reads: "To Arthur Goldberg-/ With the high regard and affection/ of his friend-/ Lyndon B. Johnson." Appointed by President Kennedy, Goldberg was an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1962 to 1965 and one of the most significant justices of the twentieth century. In his three terms on the bench he pushed the Court's toward a broader construction of personal rights, a course it followed over the following two decades. He is best known for his influential 1963 internal Supreme Court memorandum that condemned capital punishment as an example of "cruel and unusual punishment," as defined by the Eighth Amendment, and his opinion in Griswold v. Connecticut (1965), which argued against a Connecticut law banning the use of contraceptives because it violated an unumerated right to privacy guaranteed by the Ninth Amendment. The memo initiated a wave of litigation and legislation that led to the abolition of the death penalty in several states; the Griswold opinion laid the foundation for Roe v. Wade (1973), which established a women's right to have an abortion. When Adlai Stevenson, Ambassador to the United Nations, died in 1965 President Johnson decided to appoint Goldberg to fill his seat. Johnson's larger plan was to put Abe Fortas on the bench because he knew Fortas would defend his Great Society programs (and spy on the Court for him). Probably a recipient of the legendary Johnson "treatment," Goldberg was persuaded to resign while flying to Stevenson's funeral on Air Force One. This photograph may be a memento of that 1965 flight, or one of the tools Johnson used to persuade Goldberg.

        TIME

New York: ?"C?" Press. 1965. First edition. One of 10 lettered copies. Hardbound by the publisher in yellow, black and red patterned cloth and containing an original tissue guarded Burroughs manuscript page and an original artwork by Brion Gysin. Signed by Burroughs and Gysin twice (Once on their manuscript and original artwork page and again on the title underneath the stamped limitation statement). Four printed artworks by Brion Gysin. A fine copy. The work is a simulation of Time magazine, which included four of Gysin's drawings slipped into the Time layout and is one of Burroughs' earliest examples to merge the collage technique of art with the cut up technique of literature. It is the fullest expression of Burroughs' experimentation with the newspaper and magazine format that is part parody, and part critique as well as an expression of a new format and form capable of expressing a greater truth than fiction or journalism separately. Time goes to the heart of Burroughs' distrust of the mass media manipulation of image and news. The publication serves as confirmation of Burroughs early experiments with the visual arts and expresses elements of surrealism; the collage and assemblage art of Rauschenberg or Wallace Berman and his circle, Pop Art, and Mail Art are also all present in Time. The copy is letter G of the 10 copies lettered A - J, all of which were hardbound and issued with an original manuscript page collage by Burroughs and an original artwork by Gysin. A stellar copy of this important work. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

        IN COLD BLOOD

1965. CAPOTE, Truman. IN COLD BLOOD. A True Account Of A Multiple Murder And Its Consequences. NY: Random House, [1965]. 8vo., maroon cloth in dust jacket. First Trade Edition, top-edge stained, in the earliest dust jacket- with "1/66" on the front flap and with "Publishers Of The American College Dictionary And The Modern Library" at the bottom of the rear flap. With an interesting signed presentation from Capote on the half-title page: "For Peter Bell with all good wishes, Truman Capote." What makes this presentation interesting is that Peter Bell was one of the protagonists in Capote's earliest book "Summer Crossing." Capote began writing the novel in 1944, when he was 19 years old. A draft of the novel was later discovered in a basement apartment in Brooklyn after Capote left it behind. It was not dicovered or published until about 2004. Peter Bell is a sexually ambiguous, preppy friend of the main protagonist in the novel. Was there a "real" Peter Bell? A little more research on this book wouldn't hurt! Near fine (bright); very minor wear (few very tiny nicks & tears base of spine) d/j. $2500.00.

        Some/Thing 1-5

Hawk's Well Press, New York 1965 - Five numbers in four volumes: 64, 68, (80), 118 pp., small 8vo. First three volumes sewn in signatures, last volume (double number 4-5) perfect-bound, all glued into illustrated wrappers. Covers by Amy Mendelson, Robert Morris, Andy Warhol, and George Maciunas. Numbers 2, 3, and 4-5 are signed by both Antin and Rothenberg. All in about very good condition, mostly unopened, with minor flaws: no. 1, covers rubbed and lightly scraped, and with a small tear at bottom of spine, otherwise a bright, tight copy; no. 2, light rubbing, creasing, and soiling to covers; no. 3, light staining, creasing, and abrasions to covers; no. 4-5, light rubbing and creasing to covers, otherwise about fine. A complete run of this legendary downtown New York magazine, which brought together poets and visual artists in powerful ways; a foretaste (and forecast) of the influential careers of the editors. This set includes the rare first version of the notorious "Bomb Hanoi" cover for no. 3, rejected by Warhol due to both the quality of the type and the fact that the printer executed by simple dashed lines a design that was meant to be a tipped-on page of gummed and perforated stamps (as it in fact was in the corrected second printing). In addition, laid into no. 1 at David Antin's contribution ("definitions for mendy") is a handwritten note, signed, from Antin to Jasper Johns, c. 60 words, beginning "This is the magazine I told you I was going to put out when we met at Nicco Calas'. It contains the long poem that was inflicted on you (among other things) . . ." It doesn't get much better. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Twee handgeschreven brieven aan de redactie van het tijdschrift Dialoog. Tijdschrift voor homofilie en maatschappij.

      1. 27,4 x 21,4 cm. Eén blad. Alleen recto. Gesigneerd 'GerardKvanhetReve' en gedateerd 'Greonterp Post Oudega Wijmbritseradeel Friesland/ 5 maart 1965'. 12 regels tekst. 2. 27,4 x 21,4 cm. Eén blad. Alleen recto. Want als men staande naamvalsverbuigingen bezigt, moet men ze korrekt toepassen, & tijd is mannelijk'.
