Original candid photograph of Roman Polanski, Jean-luc Godard, and Catherine Deneuve at Cannes, 1965

Paris: Claude Schwartz, 1965. Vintage silver gelatin photograph of Roman Polanski, Jean-luc Godard and actress Catherine Deneuve at Cannes in May 1965, taken by French press and still photographer Claude Schwartz. With Schwartz's French press stamp appearing 5 times on the verso. Arguably the tall man in the background is Barbet Schroeder. Polanski's 1965 film, "Repulsion," a film that had much to do with Ms. Deneuve's impending fame, made its world premiere at this festival. In 1964, Ms. Deneuve appeared in "Les plus belles escroqueries du monde" ["The Beautiful Swindlers"], an omnibus of grifting stories, shot on location in Tokyo, Paris, Italy, and Amsterdam by Polanski, Godard, Claude Chabrol, Ugo Gregoretti, and Hiromichi Horikawa. Deneuve starred as a lovely swindler in Chabrol's segment, "L'Homme qui vendit la Tour Eiffel." 9.5 x 7.25 inches. Near Fine.

Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a small chip to the front panel and a closed tear. Mary Oliver was described by The New York Times as "far and away, [America's] best-selling poet." Oliver's poetry has been called an "indefatigable guide to the natural world, particularly to its lesser-known aspects" (Kumin, 1993). "Visionary as Emerson [ she is] among the few American poets who can describe and transmit ecstasy, while retaining a practical awareness of the world as one of predators and prey," reviewed The Nation. Holly Prado of Los Angeles Times Book Review noted that Oliver's work "touches a vitality in the familiar that invests it with a fresh intensity."         Eleven Poems

Festival Publications, Belfast 1965 - 8vo, 14 pp. unpaginated, stapled paper wrappers. A little light browning to wrappers, otherwise a near fine copy. Purple nine-point star device to front wrapper. First edition, first issue, with the purple nine-point star to front wrapper. The extremely scarce pamphlet which launched the career of a Nobel laureate. Heaney's first publication, comprising many of the poems that would appear in his first collection Death Of A Naturalist the following year. Eleven Poems was privately published by Queen's University -- Heaney's alma mater, and his place of work as a lecturer in Modern English Literature from 1966. It was one in a series of Festival publications drawing attention to the work of the nascent Belfast Group of poets, among them Derek Mahon, Michael Longley, Stewart Parker, and the group's founder Philip Hobsbaum. The book exists in three states: this, the first issue; a second issue (1966) featuring a darker, ten-point star on the front wrapper; and a completely redesigned third issue which appeared in 1967. As well as being the most desirable, the first issue is by far the scarcest. Brandes and Durkan A1(a)

Kraków : Zwiazek Polskich Artystów Plastyków W Krakowie, 1965 - 1st edition. Original printed paper wrappers, 8vo, 159 pages, primarily illustrations ; 20 cm. Fully illustrated exhibition catalog for the important one-month show of works produced by Polish artists imprisoned in Concentration Camps. The title translates as: "Accusing the Nazis of their Crimes, 1939-1945: The Role of Polish Artists from Krakow and the Krakow Society of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy. " Text in Polish with summaries in Russian, French, English and German. "Under the black wall of the Death Block at KL Auschwitz, a great many of Cracow’s artists, arrested in the Spring of 1942, met their death, while others went to fill of the camps dispersed through the Third Reich, to die of starvation and disease, from torture and exhaustion. The prison community, though evidently ignorant of the private directives issued by the central SS authorities for the destruction of the Polish leading circles, by instinct, as it were, and desirous to save these links so essential to the nation’s organism, tried to do its best to alleviate the imprisoned artists’ camp existence. Everything that could be done was done, frequently wth touching proof of loving solicitude [sic]. Artists were always given first place on the prisoner self-help lists, and surrounded with an atmosphere of true respect, a thing so rare and priceless in the circumstances of camp life. Their fellow-sufferers tried even to provide them with some sort of primitive conditions for work, and every sketch, design or sculpture produced under illegal or semi-legal conditions, was considered almost as it if were sacred, being another proof of resistance, another sign of survival of those very forces the enemy was so keen to destroy" (Tadeusz Holuj, pp 152-153) . "1965, 22. VII-22. VIII, wystawa dla uczczenia artystów plastyków poleglych zamordowanych I wiezionych, 1939-1945" (July 22 – August 22, Exhibition to Celebrate the Artists who were Murdered and Imprisoned) .         Confessions of a Man Insane Enough to Live with Beasts (First Edition, inscribed to the publisher, Douglas Blazek, in 1966, with two abstract drawings)

Bensenville, IL: Open Skull Press, 1965. First Edition. First Edition. One of about 500 copies published by Douglas Blazek's Open Skull Press, and the introduction of "Henry Chinaski," Bukowski's favorite anti-hero, to the world. INSCRIBED by Bukowski to Blazek inside the front wrapper: "For Douglas Blazek / Doug, you know what I mean / That where almost all men have fallen apart under the smallest circumstance, you've held to it, kept it like a sugar cube in a vase. O tough young bastard of holler, true son of truth / My remains of love / Buk / 1-25-66." At the rear of the volume appear two full-page color abstract drawings by Bukowski, neither called for, both dated and signed: "Hangover and First Drink," and "Dream of the Insect." Blazek, a prolific poet in his own right, was an important figure in the underground poetry scene and was one of the first publishers who understood the raw power in Bukowski's early poetry. He was the publisher of "Ole" and the owner of Open Skull Press. A fantastic association made truly unique by the additional early artwork on the final blanks. Quite possibly the finest copy of this chapbook in existence. Publisher's saddle-stitched pink wrappers. Fine. Krumhansl 17.

Hallelujah Die Hügel [Hallelujah the Hills] (Original German poster for the 1963 film)

Munich: Peter-Presse / Atlas Films, 1965. Original 1965 German A1 poster for the 1963 US film. Designed by Heinz Edelman From the collection of noted film historian Amos Vogel. Full provenance available. An iconoclastic, utterly American underground film best understood by way of the reactions it receives from viewers outside the US. Time Out Guide notes: "a highpoint from the 'innocent' years of American underground cinema, and something of an enduring delight for real film buffs. Mekas' comedy starts from an enthusiastic parody of French 'new wave' concepts like using two actresses to play one character, and manages to go on to incorporate references (part satire, part homage) to what seems like every other branch of cinema extant ... from samurai movies to Chaplinesque slapstick...hitting the intended tone between love and skepticism." Jean-Luc Godard: "Next to the two big shots of the New York School, Clarke and Cassavetes, [Mekas] seemed a poor relative, especially since people got him confused with his brother [Jonas Mekas]. 'Hallelujah the Hills' [proves] clearly that Adolfas is someone to be reckoned with. He is a master in the field of pure invention, that is to say, in working dangerously, 'without a net. His film, made according to the good old principle, "one idea for each shot," has the lovely scent of fresh ingenuity and crafty sweetness. Physical efforts and intellectual gags are boldly put together. The slightest thing moves you and makes you laugh: a badly framed bush, a banana stuck in a pocket, a majorette in the snow. He shows life as defined by Ramuz: 'As with a dance, such pleasure to begin, a piston, a clarinet, such sorrow to be done, the head spins and night has come.'" 23 x 33 inches, non-archivally mounted on board. Light soil overall. Very Good plus overall. Shipping billed at cost.

Lectures on Gravitation 1962-63. Lecture Notes by Fernando B. Morinigo and William G. Wagner.[Not published: Pasadena: California Institute of Technology, 1963].

"First edition, very rare, of Feynman's lectures on gravitation, famous for their highly original approach to general relativity. "In this <i>tour de force</i>, we get to look over the shoulder of one of the most brilliant physicists of all time as he reinvents the theory of gravitation, at a time when his goal was to produce a consistent and finite quantum theory of gravitation" ( "It is difficult, in the current climate, where such great interest has developed in unifying the different forces of nature, to realize how revolutionary Feynman's approach was ... this new picture of gravity and general relativity created a completely novel bridge between general relativity and the rest of physics that was not there before. It suggested, just as Feynman hoped it would, that one might use the tools of quantum field theory not only to understand general relativity but also to unify it with the other forces of nature ... Feynman did not find that a consistent quantum theory of gravity interacting with matter, without any nasty infinities, could be derived by simply treating general relativity as he had electrodynamics ... Nevertheless, every major development that has taken place in the fifty-odd years since Feynman began his work in this area, involving a line of scientists from Feynman to Weinberg to Stephen Hawking and beyond, has built on his approach" (Krauss, pp. 245-9). OCLC lists six copies in US; no copies in auction records.<br/><br/> "In these lectures, Feynman discards the entire geometric edifice of Einstein's theory of gravitation (general relativity) and starts from scratch, putting himself and his students in the place of physicists from Venus (who he calls "Venutians"-Feynman was famously sloppy with spelling) who have discovered the full quantum theories of electromagnetism and the strong and weak nuclear forces but have just discovered there is a very weak attractive force between all masses, regardless of their composition ... Feynman then argues that the alien physicists would suspect that this new force worked in a manner analogous to those already known, and seek to extrapolate their knowledge of electrodynamics (the quantum theory of which Feynman had played a central part in discovering, for which he would share a Nobel prize in 1965). ". Mimeographed notes, printed on recto only. 4to (280 x 218 mm), pp. [i], 155, numerous mathematical formulas and diagrams in text. Plain card covers (probably original). Several marginal notes by a well-informed reader

Original photographic title cards and title design sketches for the seminal 1965 television series, notable for having utilized these photographs rather than filmed performances for its title sequence. Included are 10 double weight photographs, several signed by the series' star, Anne Francis, and 4 title design sketches that were ultimately made into overlays ("Starring Anne Francis," "Honey West" in two different styles, etc.) The photographs include several shots of Francis, both in action and posed for danger, some with cutout photo overlays, whiteout, etc., to achieve the look needed for the title sequence. Also present are two photos of John Ericson (Honey's assistant Sam Bolt), and one kaleidoscopic shot of a criminal in sunglasses who is laughing maniacally. One photograph, shot and sized differently than the others, is the striking photo of Honey West's pet ocelot Bruce, the image that ends the show's title sequence. The first American television program to star a female private detective, based on the novels by Gloria and Forrest Fickling, and conceived by Aaron Spelling after seeing the success of Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) as a female crime buster in the British series "The Avengers," but with the female character fully up front rather than part of an ensemble. After being turned down by Honor Blackman (who had at the time wowed audiences as Pussy Galore in "Goldfinger"), the role in the series was given to Anne Francis, who had originally played the character on an episode of the Spelling produced "Burke's Law" on ABC, which served as a backdoor pilot to the series. Honey's alluring feline qualities were reflected in her animal-print wardrobe and apartment decor. For sneaking around at night and engaging in energetic fight scenes, she wears a black fabric bodystocking reminiscent of Emma Peel's leather jumpsuit. Like Peel's Lotus Elan sports car, Honey's similar-looking AC Cobra convertible emphasized her independence and vitality. Although the racy content of the novels was excised for television, West often went on solo undercover missions that required a provocative or revealing outfit. West's partner Friday Bolt communicates with Honey via a radio hidden in her lipstick case and lends a hand when it comes to mopping up the bad guys. She uses a number of James Bond-like gimmicks: a high-tech surveillance van, an exploding compact, a garter-belt gas mask, and tear-gas earrings. West is a black-belt in Judo, as is Sam, who is an ex-Marine. Nine of the photographs 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm), mounted on black card stock measuring 10.75 x 12.75 inches, with design and production notations in silver ink at the bottom margin of the black card stock. One photograph (of Bruce the ocelot) borderless, 12.5 x 10 inches. Title designs executed in pencil and colored pencil on drawing paper, 10.25 x 12.5 inches. All material Very Good plus to Near Fine.

Behavior of Prices on Wall Street:

Chappaqua, New York: Analysis Press, 1965. First edition. Octavo, original blue cloth. One of a numbered copies signed by Arthur A. Merrill. In fine condition. The signed limited edition is rare. Arthur Merrill is one of the most prominent stock market statisticians ever to practice the craft in the market. "There are few market patterns that occur with such unbelievable regularity that you must become aware of them ... No one, to my knowledge, has engaged in more in-depth research than Arthur Merrill. Merrill's Behavior of Prices is an excellent work on the subject." This book concentrates on the profitable study of timing. The author has found the market to be similar to a warped roulette wheel. At certain predictable times, it has a definite bias upward; at other predictable times, the inclination is downward. A knowledge of this bias is useful to long-term as well as short-term investors in the improvement of buying and selling prices. The text is addressed to non-mathematical investors, and includes all of the suggestions for profit. In addition, serious students will find useful material in the appendixes. The pioneering work of Art Merrill in his classic book, The Behavior of Prices on Wall Street, clearly demonstrates the statistical reliability of pre-holiday behavior in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Merrill showed that the odds of a higher-price close on the day before major U.S. holidays were not only very high but also statistically significant.

State Funeral of Sir Winston Churchill; Ceremonial to be Observed at the Funeral; The Order of Service for the Funeral

Her Majesty's Stationery Office, London 1965 - SCARCE PRESS RELEASE for the State Funeral of Winston Churchill, WITH FINE COPIES of "The Order of Service" and the "Ceremonial to be Observed". Churchill died on 24 January, 1965. "The funeral was six days later, the coffin having lain in state in Westminster Hall for the preceding three days. It was the first time since Gladstone in 1898 that any non-royal personage had been so treated" (Roy Jenkins). It has been said with only slight exaggeration that the whole word paid tribute to Churchill on January 30, 1965, for representatives from over 100 countries came to pay their respects, forming the largest gathering of dignitaries ever in Britain. Only the funeral of Pope John Paul II in 2005 surpassed Churchill's funeral in the number of statesmen attending. The press release, with the strict note that it was "not for publication before 0001 hours Saturday, 30th January 1965" covers in minute detail every aspect of the funeral. The included charts illustrate the order of procession, the deployment in the New Palace Yard, and the arrival at St. Paul's. [London]: The Earl Marshal's Press Office, Ministry of Defence, 29 January, 1965. Eleven mimeographed 8x13 inch sheets (two page 10's) with three additional maps and diagrams on thicker stock. Stapled together in center. A remarkable survival- only very slight wear to edges and a few scattered spots. The "Ceremonial to be Observed", like the press release, outlines all the details of the service, while "The Order of Service" contains the readings and the prayers for the service. Both are elegantly printed on heavy paper stock by Her Majesty's Stationery Office and were designed to be distributed to attendees of the service. London: Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1965. Decorated wrappers ("Ceremonial" is 10.5x7.25 in.; "The Order" is 7.25x5.25 in.). A few spots of soiling to rear wrapper of "The Order"; beautiful copies: extremely rare in such fine condition. All three items together in custom silk box. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Face of Washington Square

Tokyo, Japan: Hashimoto Yuyudo, 1965. First edition. Softcover. One of the more under appreciated Japanese photography books of the era. Watanabe was one of the few Japanese photographers to travel to the U.S. and turn his camera on the 60's scene. He captured an optimism that is so often missing from many of his contemporaries work. A close to near fine copy in photo-illustrated wrappers with slight bumping to the top and bottom corners and some very negligible wear with a near fine obi that has a small tear to the spine in a close to near fine printed that cardboard slipcase that has some splitting to the top corner. Signed and inscribed on the front free endpaper by Watanabe in English and Japanese. A very nice copy and uncommon signed.

Diana Rigg in fashion promo shot for The Avengers (Original photograph)

N.p.: N.p., 1965. Vintage single weight black and white fashion photograph of Diana Rigg as Emma Peel, the iconic female character in the classic British television series, "The Avengers." Here Rigg stands on a polar bear skin rug laid out near the shoreline of an unknown British locale. Shot by photographer Terry O'Neill to promote the hiring of John Bates (who worked for noted designer Jean Varon). A mimeo snipe on the verso of the photograph goes into some detail regarding Varon, Bates, and O'Neill. Bates became Ms. Riggs' costume designer in the second half of the show's fourth series in January 1966. He created for the character a wardrobe of black and white op-art mod clothing and mini skirts. Prior to this then-radical shift, it was believed that lines, circles and other bold patterns would not work well with the television cameras of the day. Too, this fashion change was introduced prior to the mini skirt becoming mainstream, and weighed heavily in that fashion shift in the UK. Bates licensed his designs to several manufacturers under the Avengerswear label and these pieces were sold in various shops throughout the country. Emma Peel's character was iconic in the 1960s from the standpoint of both fashion and female liberation. She was a heroine, rarely bested in a fight, and routinely rescued her male counterpart Steed from trouble. She was a master of martial arts and a formidable fencer. She was a certified genius, specializing in chemistry and other sciences, and was often seen in episodes engaging in artistic hobbies. Just to leave no vista unconquered, she also had success in industry at the helm of the company of her late father, Sir John Knight. She drove a convertible Lotus Elan at high speeds, and convincingly portrayed any series of undercover roles, from nurse to nanny. Her favorite guise was that of a women's magazine reporter, trying to interview big business tycoons and rich playboys. The name "Emma Peel" was a play on the phrase "Man Appeal" or "M. Appeal", which the production team stated was one of the required elements of the character. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm), Fine. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass, double mounted with both sides exposed for viewing. Complete collation details available on request.

New York: New Directions, Harcourt, Macmillan, and Knopf, 1965. A family archive of five Randall Jarrell books. All are first editions, cloth, with jackets. Four are inscribed by Jarrell to his Uncle Howell and Aunt Elise. One is inscribed by Jarrell's wife Mary (four days after Randall's death) to Randall's brother Charles, and then reinscribed by Charles to Aunt Elise. Randall Jarrell's parents divorced when he was a young boy. Randall's mother was poor, and it was her brother ("Uncle Howell") who became the alpha male in Randall's life. Uncle Howell (Campbell) owned a very profitable candy company, and urged Randall to attend business school and join the candy business. Randall tried business school, but did poorly; subsequently Uncle Howell agreed to send him to Vanderbilt, paying all of his tuition. The five titles include: FIVE YOUNG AMERICAN POETS (Jarrell's first book appearance); LOSSES; THE SEVEN-LEAGUE CRUTCHES; POETRY AND THE AGE; and THE LOST WORLD. A terrific archive of family association copies. All of the books show only minimal wear, and are otherwise in fine condition.

Los Angeles, 1965. Folio. Half cloth and paper boards. Fine. Two 16th-century Mexican broadsheets from the collection of Dr. Emilio Valton, in the extremely rare book with explanatory text by Edwin Carpenter. The first example is a CARTER DE PODER (or power of attorney) form printed by the first printer in the New World, Juan Pablos, about 1560, completed in manuscript on Dec. 3, 1565 (typically large stocks of these notarial forms were kept on hand, and often used years later). Pablos established the first printing press in the New World in Mexico City in 1539, and was the only printer to operate there until his death. In 1563 the second printer in the New World, Pedro Ocharte, took over the press and operated it until 1592. He is represented by a CARTA DE PODER dated Nov. 5, 1587, also printed in Mexico City. Valton owned a total of thirty-nine pre-1600 broadsheets. Most of the Carpenter books contained a single sheet, but this one, from the collection of the publisher, has two. This represents virtually the only chance to own an example of the first press in the New World.

Orson Welles and John Gielgud on the set of "Chimes at Midnight" (Original still photograph)

Wengen, Switzerland: Alpine Films, 1965. Vintage oversize double weight photograph of Orson Welles and John Gielgud on location in Spain for the shooting of "Chimes at Midnight" in 1965. Shot and struck by noted photographer Nicolas Tikhomoroff, with his rubber stamp and the stamp of his Parisian agency, V.I.P., on the verso. "Chimes at Midnight," Welles' third of three legendary Shakespearean adaptations and last masterpiece, is based on his early play "Five Kings," which condensed Shakespeare's War of the Roses cycle into one story. Welles produced the play in New York in 1939 but the opening night, during which Part 1 was performed, was a disaster, and Part 2 was never staged. He revamped the show and revisited it in 1960, again without success. The later production became the basis for this film, in which Welles plays Falstaff. "Chimes at Midnight," as with nearly all of Welles' efforts as a director, was plagued by financial and logistical problems, shot with nearly no budget, and received no promotion and a very limited release. Original photographs from the set are rare. Nominated for the Palme d'Or, and winner of two other awards at Cannes in 1966. 9.5 x 13.75 inches. Near Fine. In a lovely museum-quality frame with archival UV glass.

New York: Holt, Rinehart, Winston, 1965. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. From the library of Jack Kerouac, with his notes in his hand on the front free endpaper. There are four lines of notes with page numbers corresponding with the text. Additionally this copy is signed by Kurt Vonnegut in a contemporary hand on the same page. Very good in a bright dust jacket with light wear. Rare and desirable. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater is author's fifth novel and comic masterpiece.
