McGraw-Hill Book Company (1965), New York - Cloth-backed boards. Illustrated with 92 photographs. A family history written by Johnson's mother with an introduction by the president. SIGNED by the President with a felt-tip pen on the half-title page and INSCRIBED and SIGNED again on the dedication page: "To ------/from his friend/Lyndon B. Johnson/Xmas' 72." Books genuinely signed by LBJ are quite scarce, and most of those are copies of THE VANTAGE POINT, usually signed on a bookplate. This is one of his scarcest books to find inscribed, as he tended to do so only for those of intimate acquaintance.         The Man With the Golden Gun

London: Jonathan Cape, 1965. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. A bright, Near Fine copy of the book with the spine a trifle cocked, otherwise in excellent condition. Small previous owner's stamp on the front end paper has been covered over with a thin layer of paint. First state binding with a very bright gilt gun on the upper board. In a Near Fine, dust jacket that has one small (1/8 inch) tear at the crown and a minuscule nick at the top of the rear panel. Published a year after Ian Fleming's death, "The Man with the Golden Gun" is the final James Bond novel written by its original creator. Fleming's health rapidly decreased while writing the book and though he finished a draft of the novel in 1964, he never fully re-worked it. After Fleming's death, the novel was published in the U.K. and then serialized in The Daily Express and Playboy. Ironically, in this novel, Bond is presumed dead before returning to London. He's been brainwashed by the Soviet Union and attempts to assassinate "M." After regaining his senses, Bond is sent to the Caribbean to assassinate Francisco Scaramanga, known as "The Man with the Golden Gun.". Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Autograph graphic musical manuscript from the composer's La Passion selon Sade, signed "Syl B" to the distinguished music administrator and author Renée Levine [Packer]

      - 1 page, ca. 202 x 250 mm. Dated Buffalo 1965. In colored pencils and black ink, with elements of graphic notation. Inscribed "da 'La Passion selon Sade' variation, 'chioma di Berenice' for Renée Levine (a colori)." to lower margin.Slightly worn; occasional show-through to blank verso. Apparently unique. The present "variation," Chioma di Berenice, is not in the edition of La Passion selon Sade published by Ricordi in 1966.Bussotti composed La passion selon Sade, "a mystère de chambre" to his own libretto after Louise Labé, in 1965-66.According to Grove Music Online, the work received its first partial performance at the Teatro Biondo in Palermo on September 5, 1965; and its first complete performance in Stockholm in 1969. However, Bussotti had already conducted excerpts from the work at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo on March 5, 1965, and in New York City shortly thereafter. Of the Buffalo performance, Levine writes: "Excerpts from Bussotti's chamber opera La Passion selon Sade (1965) provided another unsettling experience. Employing an ensemble with electronics, percussion, piano, and strings, the composer conducted this semi-staged version from a settee placed with its back to the audience. Soprano Sylvia Brigham-Dimiziani, in black cape and hood, had the principal role, using speech, noises, grunts, and melodic episodes in a spectacular fashion. Jay Humeston, cellist, and Michael Sahl, pianist, were directed to flagellate the strings of their instruments with small whips that Bussotti had brought with him from abroad. Others in the ensemble were led on and off stage in ritual-like behavoir." This Life of Sounds: Evenings for New Music in Buffalo, 43-44.Bussotti was an Italian avant-garde composer, artist, writer, and film director. He is well-known for his unusually notated music, which often creates certain interpretive challenges."Born in France, raised in New York and Mexico City, Levine Packer worked with Lukas Foss and was co-director with Morton Feldman of the renowned contemporary music group in Buffalo, New York, and a director of the Contemporary Music Festival at the California Institute of the Arts. She was Director of the Inter-Arts program at the National Endowment for the Arts, the producer of Steve Reich and Beryl Korot's multimedia opera The Cave, and a dean at the Maryland Institute College of Art." He was one of the foremost intelligencers of Europe of the seventeenth century, with a network of correspondents to rival those of Fabri de Peiresc, Marin Mersenne and Ismaël Boulliau. At the foundation of the Royal Society he took on the task of foreign correspondence, as the first Secretary. Born in Bremen, Germany, he trained in theology and received his degree on 2 November 1639. His movements during the 1640s are unclear, but he is thought to have worked as a tutor in England for much of the decade. In 1648 he left England and travelled, returning in the end to Bremen. He went to London in 1653, as a diplomat; and settled in England of the Interregnum. He forged a strong relationship with his lifelong patron Robert Boyle, and was tutor to Boyle's nephew Richard Jones.       Chilton Books, New York/ Philadelphia 1965 - First edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author, "To Bill Barnes- appreciation for kind words- Frank Herbert." An excellent near fine example in a near fine dust jacket with some light rubbing and wear to the extremities. Dune was awarded the first Nebula award for best science fiction novel, shared the Hugo award, and "became one of the most famous of all science fiction novels" (The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction). Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family--and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream. A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction. Famously organized by Sam Green, the 25 year-old director of the Philadelphia ICA, appointed largely as a result of his relationship with Warhol. This copy signed as Andy Warhol, likely by Green, but we can not prove this, nor are we sure that the signature is not Warhol himself or, possibly, a forgery. The opening of the show was a logistical disaster: large crowds, akin more to a rock concert than an art opening, prompting Green to pull all the art off the walls before people stormed in. Thus Warhol and his entourage became the only art to see, accelerating his status as a Pop art icon. The catalogue was itself a revelation. Created with Ben Birillo, who had been responsible for some of the most recognizable Pop art ephemera of the era, the pages are printed on heavy card stock colored green, silver, and blue, with mostly full-bleed images, 27 total, and entirely devoid of text, save Green's opening essay.

Jean-Baptiste Debret (1768 - 1848) was a French painter who produced many valuable lithographs depicting the people of Brazil. He first travelled to Brazil in March 1816 as a member of the so-called French Artistic Mission. He received favour from the Portuguese court in exile and later by the imperial court in Rio. He was commissioned to paint portraits of Portuguese King Dom Joao VI and the Archduchess Maria Leopoldina of Austria who married Dom Pedro I of Brazil. In 1829 Debret organized the first art exhibition ever to take place in Brazil, in which he presented many of his works as well as those of his disciples. Despite his portrayal of royal and aristocratic subjects, he is today best known for his portrayals of street scenes, local costumes, and the everyday life of Brazilians in the period between 1816 and 1831. He took a particular interest in black slavery conditions and in the indigenous peoples of Brazil. His work is therefore one of the most important documentations of the country during the early decades of the 19th century. Returning to France in 1831, he published this monumental series, three volumes of lithographs. His original volumes, published from 1834 to 1839, are very scarce and quite difficult to find, making this facsimile edition of vital importance in documenting his contribution to Brazilian history and art.

Ben-Gurion writes to the director of the Sde Boker College in the Negev about obtaining funds for building and ongoing expenses

Tel Aviv, [Israel], September 2,1965. 4.5 x 8.25". "Autograph Letter Signed ""D. Ben-Gurion,"" 1 page, 4.5"" x 8.25"". Tel Aviv [Israel], September 2, 1965. Lightweight lined paper perforated at right margin. To ""Avraham Tzivion / College / Sde Boker / Negev."" In Hebrew with partial English translation. Small portion missing from upper right blank edge. Fine condition. In part, ""I was happy [to receive] your telegram informing about the beginning of the studies in the … school. Prof. Bergman contacted the manager of Mifal Ha'Payis [Israel's national lottery] (profits per year are over 50 million Israeli liras) asking him to … from the Payis monies to the college. Dr. Landau replied that according to the regulations of Mifal Ha'Payis, the organization can give money for … and for investments but not for ongoing expenses. In addition, for investments, an approval from the Ministry of Education is required … We must first get from Dr. Landau's (director of Mifal Ha'Payis) consent to allocate funds for the building…""Robert Gamzey, author of Miracle of Israel, wrote in an article published in the May 7, 1967, edition of The Hartford Courant, about the college and the recipient of this letter, Avraham Tzivion. In part, ""When David Ben Gurion, the 80-year-old George Washington of Israel, toured the United States recently on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal, he made Americans conscious of his desert kibbutz homer here at Sde Boker, and of the College of the Negev which already has 600 students … the question persisted: 'How do you inspire youth to study and settle in the desert?' Colonel Avraham Tzivion, director of the Sde Boker College, said it is being done by following Ben-Gurion's principles. 'Our teachers set the example by living with the students at our desert school, not by preaching to go to the Negev and the teachers commuting from the cities,' said Col. Tzivion, who formerly headed the Israel Army Adult Education School at Camp David Marcus in Haifa…'"" Ben Gurion raised $1,200,000 for the Sde Boker Midrasha (College) in the United States through the UJA-Israel Education Fund.Politically, Ben-Gurion, with the support of Moshe Dayan and Shimon Peres, among others, were challenging the powerful Mapai Party which he had helped found. On September 2, 1965, the very day Ben-Gurion wrote this letter, a five-member court of the Mapai Party decided that Ben-Gurion and his colleagues were no longer members. The court ruled that the former Prime Minister had expelled himself by forming a separate party, the Rafi. On July 14, 1965, Ben-Gurion had led a breakaway of eight Members of the Knesset from the ruling Mapai Party including Dayan, Peres, Chaim Herzog, and Teddy Kollek. The Mapai secretariat expelled him on July 23rd and when he challenged its authority to do so, a court was set up to hear his plea. The Rafi then challenged the Mapai, led by Ben-Gurion's successor as Prime Minister, Levi Eshkol."

Sala Gaspar, Barcelone, 1965. sheets loose as issued in a linen-covered solander box, the title printed on the uppers The complete portfolio, comprising thirteen lithographs printed in colors, each signed in pencil and numbered from an edition of 30 with title page, justification and list of plates, this copy numbered xxx, printed by Jacques Desjobert, Paris on B.F.K. Rives paper, the full sheets printed to the edges. Done by Clavé as a tribute to El Greco to celebrate the 350 anniversary of his death. I remember that Clavé told us how moved he was by the work of El Greco, and particularly by the power of Nobleman with a Hand on his Chest. On the occasion of the publication of an album about Clavé's reinterpretation of El Greco, we travelled with him to Toledo and followed him on visits to all the museums where El Greco's work was on display. On seeing the great masterpieces, Clavé was just as awed as any other museum visitor. In 1963 he undertook a series of large canvases, as well as lithographs and etchings, on the theme of Tribute to Domenikos Theotokopoulos. In 1965, Clavé moved to the south of France. His tapisseries-assemblages were presented at the Sala Gaspar in Barcelona at the same time as Tribute to Domenikos Theotokopoulos. ("Clavé solitario y azul" by Josep Casamartina).
