Help! (Collection of 4 still photographs from the 1965 film)

London and Los Angeles: Walter Shenson Films / United Artists, 1965. Collection of four vintage black-and-white single weight still photographs from the release of the 1965 British-American film. All four of the boys wonderfully represented here, gals in tow, having a fine time on the ice (John and George), in the jungle (Paul), in a bubble car (George), and on top of a tank (everyone). Richard Lester's auteur take on the Fab Four propelled United Artists far into the black at a time when most of the aging Hollywood executives had never even heard of the Beatles. As with "A Hard Day's Night" the year before, a wonderful intersection of pop, youthful innocence, culture shift, and legend-making. Shot on location in London, Liverpool, Buckinghamshire, throughout Middlesex, and in Salzburg, Austria. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Near Fine. Complete collation details available on request.

Imageries ; Le Petit Poucet , Blanche-Neige, Le Petit Chaperon rouge, La Fable du Hasard, La Belle au Bois Dormant, Cenicienta

Adrien Maeght editeur, Paris 1965 - Le Petit Poucet , Blanche-Neige, Le Petit Chaperon rouge, La Fable du Hasard, La Belle au Bois Dormant, Cenicienta (sic). Self-Published, Los Angeles 1965 - np (48pp), 34 b&w illustrations. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Some Los Angeles Apartments" is Ed Ruscha's third artist book - a wry yet heartfelt photographic survey of the subtle beauty of the post-war Southern California rental property construction boom. A bright, most handsome example of the uncommon 1965 first edition (entry B3 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999") limited to seven hundred unnumbered copies whose vintage glassine wrapper shows some typical minor age patination along with a few tiny closed tears and missing chips along the extremities and heel of the spine. All in all, this is an exceptional example of this important little gem that is often confused with the 1990 Whitney Museum exhibition catalogue of virtually the same title. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         The Book Of Bond, Or Every Man His Own 007 (Writing as Bill Tanner).

New York, NY: Viking Press, 1965., 1965. FIRST US EDITION, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. Small octavo. Publisher's white cloth with 'Walther' device in black, red endpapers, illustrated jacket by Raymond Hawkey. A lovely fine copy. An unusual piece of Bondiana, rarely seen signed. Bill Tanner is a fictional character in the James Bond novels, who holds the position of MI6 Chief of Staff; Fleming reveals that he is James Bond's closest friend in the service, and he was a regular character in the later continuation series by John Gardner. In 1965, Kingsley Amis wrote 'The Book of Bond' as a tongue-in-cheek manual for prospective secret agents, illustrated with examples from Fleming's novels. For this work, Amis used the pseudonym "Lt. Colonel William ('Bill') Tanner". BMC No.1 p.4-13 'Fleming and Bond; Related Titles'. Ex-Peter Stern of Boston.

        Fuzzy Sets

New York: Academic Press. First edition. original wrappers. Fine. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING of Zadeh's enormously influential foundational paper on "fuzzy set" theory. "Fuzzy sets have a rather brief history. The concept itself, coined by L.A. Zadeh in his seminal paper (1965), has emerged as a fundamental and fresh idea. Fuzzy sets involve capturing, representing, and working with linguistic notions-- objects with unclear boundaries. What has been conveyed by fuzzy sets and formalized in the resulting framework is definitely essential to many human endeavors and permeates many studies on the role of uncertainty…" (Pedrycz and Gomide, An Introduction to Fuzzy Sets). "Most concepts used in everyday language, such as 'high temperature,' 'round face,' or 'aquatic animal,' are not clearly defined. In 1965 Lotfi Zadeh, an engineering professor at the University of California at Berkeley, proposed a mathematical definition of those classes that lack precisely defined criteria of membership. Zadeh called them fuzzy sets. Membership in a fuzzy set may be indicated by any number from 0 to 1, representing a range from 'definitely not in the set' through 'partially in the set' to 'completely in the set'… "In a narrow sense, the term fuzzy logic refers to a system of approximate reasoning, but its widest meaning is usually identified with a mathematical theory of classes with unclear, or 'fuzzy,' boundaries. Control systems based on fuzzy logic are used in many consumer electronic devices in order to make fine adjustments to changes in the environment. Fuzzy logic concepts and techniques have also been profitably used in linguistics, the behavioral sciences, the diagnosis of certain diseases, and even stock market analysis" (Britannica). IN: Information and Control, Vol. 8, No. 3, June 1965, pp. 338-353. New York: Academic Press, 1965. Octavo, original wrappers (the entire issue offered). Ownership stamp (professor) on inside of front cover, wrappers with a few tiny spots of edgewear. RARE.

In Concert: Joan Baez and Bob Dylan (Original 1965 tour poster)

N.p.: N.p., 1965. Original poster for the 1965 tour by Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. This poster given by Baez to Tisha Fein, longtime talent coordinator and producer for the Grammy's, with Fein's holograph notation to the verso: "Joan Baez gave me this when we did her Midnight Special tribute--Tisha Fein." A musical variety series, "The Midnight Special" aired on NBC from 1973-1981 and featured many live performances, a rarity for television of that era. Baez appeared on the show several times, and met Fein during the taping of her season three appearance in 1976. The poster was designed by friend, artist, and fellow folk musician Eric Von Schmidt for Baez and Dylan's joint 1965 tour. Dylan reportedly disliked the poster, and only a very few were ever issued before it was shelved, making it one of the scarcer 60's music posters and Dylan items on the market. A key piece of 60's iconography, still being reproduced on posters and T-shirts, with a great association. 12.5 x 19.25 inches, with the blank at the top of the poster trimmed. Near Fine, with a bruise to the upper left corner, shallow diagonal creasing to the bottom right, and only a light amount of the fading that is endemic to this poster. Archivally matted and framed, with Fein's note visible via a cut-out on the verso of the frame. Grushkin 1.101, p. 59.
