Chilton Books, New York/ Philadelphia 1965 - First edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author, "To Bill Barnes- appreciation for kind words- Frank Herbert." An excellent near fine example in a near fine dust jacket with some light rubbing and wear to the extremities. Dune was awarded the first Nebula award for best science fiction novel, shared the Hugo award, and "became one of the most famous of all science fiction novels" (The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction). Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family--and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream. A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.         Andy Warhol. (ICA Catalogue)

Philadelphia: Institute of Contemporary Art, 1965. Minute nick at the spine heel, tiny abrasion and crease to the rear cover, a near fine copy in the distinctive wrappers, illustrated with Campbell's Soup Cans. Housed in a custom plexi box. Nice copy with no loose pages of an important book in Warhol's canon; very hard to find in collector's condition. First Edition. Octavo. A catalogue published in conjunction with Andy Warhol's first museum exhibition, held at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, October 8 - November 21, 1965. Famously organized by Sam Green, the 25 year-old director of the Philadelphia ICA, appointed largely as a result of his relationship with Warhol. This copy signed as Andy Warhol, likely by Green, but we can not prove this, nor are we sure that the signature is not Warhol himself or, possibly, a forgery. The opening of the show was a logistical disaster: large crowds, akin more to a rock concert than an art opening, prompting Green to pull all the art off the walls before people stormed in. Thus Warhol and his entourage became the only art to see, accelerating his status as a Pop art icon. The catalogue was itself a revelation. Created with Ben Birillo, who had been responsible for some of the most recognizable Pop art ephemera of the era, the pages are printed on heavy card stock colored green, silver, and blue, with mostly full-bleed images, 27 total, and entirely devoid of text, save Green's opening essay.

Rio de Janeiro / New York: Distribuidora Record / Continental News, 1965. Hardcover. Near Fine. 3 vols.: 8, 56, [1], 10, [1], [50]; ii, 162, [3], [43]; xvi, 252, [2], [51] p. 141 p. of colour plates and 3 colour maps. Red cloth folders with gold lettering. Light wear and soiling. Some slight tearing of cloth at spine ends. One thumbprint in volume 1 on page before first plate and stain on back of plate 10 in same volume. Jean-Baptiste Debret (1768 - 1848) was a French painter who produced many valuable lithographs depicting the people of Brazil. He first travelled to Brazil in March 1816 as a member of the so-called French Artistic Mission. He received favour from the Portuguese court in exile and later by the imperial court in Rio. He was commissioned to paint portraits of Portuguese King Dom Joao VI and the Archduchess Maria Leopoldina of Austria who married Dom Pedro I of Brazil. In 1829 Debret organized the first art exhibition ever to take place in Brazil, in which he presented many of his works as well as those of his disciples. Despite his portrayal of royal and aristocratic subjects, he is today best known for his portrayals of street scenes, local costumes, and the everyday life of Brazilians in the period between 1816 and 1831. He took a particular interest in black slavery conditions and in the indigenous peoples of Brazil. His work is therefore one of the most important documentations of the country during the early decades of the 19th century. Returning to France in 1831, he published this monumental series, three volumes of lithographs. His original volumes, published from 1834 to 1839, are very scarce and quite difficult to find, making this facsimile edition of vital importance in documenting his contribution to Brazilian history and art.

Ben-Gurion writes to the director of the Sde Boker College in the Negev about obtaining funds for building and ongoing expenses

Tel Aviv, [Israel], September 2,1965. 4.5 x 8.25". "Autograph Letter Signed ""D. Ben-Gurion,"" 1 page, 4.5"" x 8.25"". Tel Aviv [Israel], September 2, 1965. Lightweight lined paper perforated at right margin. To ""Avraham Tzivion / College / Sde Boker / Negev."" In Hebrew with partial English translation. Small portion missing from upper right blank edge. Fine condition. In part, ""I was happy [to receive] your telegram informing about the beginning of the studies in the … school. Prof. Bergman contacted the manager of Mifal Ha'Payis [Israel's national lottery] (profits per year are over 50 million Israeli liras) asking him to … from the Payis monies to the college. Dr. Landau replied that according to the regulations of Mifal Ha'Payis, the organization can give money for … and for investments but not for ongoing expenses. In addition, for investments, an approval from the Ministry of Education is required … We must first get from Dr. Landau's (director of Mifal Ha'Payis) consent to allocate funds for the building…""Robert Gamzey, author of Miracle of Israel, wrote in an article published in the May 7, 1967, edition of The Hartford Courant, about the college and the recipient of this letter, Avraham Tzivion. In part, ""When David Ben Gurion, the 80-year-old George Washington of Israel, toured the United States recently on behalf of the United Jewish Appeal, he made Americans conscious of his desert kibbutz homer here at Sde Boker, and of the College of the Negev which already has 600 students … the question persisted: 'How do you inspire youth to study and settle in the desert?' Colonel Avraham Tzivion, director of the Sde Boker College, said it is being done by following Ben-Gurion's principles. 'Our teachers set the example by living with the students at our desert school, not by preaching to go to the Negev and the teachers commuting from the cities,' said Col. Tzivion, who formerly headed the Israel Army Adult Education School at Camp David Marcus in Haifa…'"" Ben Gurion raised $1,200,000 for the Sde Boker Midrasha (College) in the United States through the UJA-Israel Education Fund.Politically, Ben-Gurion, with the support of Moshe Dayan and Shimon Peres, among others, were challenging the powerful Mapai Party which he had helped found. On September 2, 1965, the very day Ben-Gurion wrote this letter, a five-member court of the Mapai Party decided that Ben-Gurion and his colleagues were no longer members. The court ruled that the former Prime Minister had expelled himself by forming a separate party, the Rafi. On July 14, 1965, Ben-Gurion had led a breakaway of eight Members of the Knesset from the ruling Mapai Party including Dayan, Peres, Chaim Herzog, and Teddy Kollek. The Mapai secretariat expelled him on July 23rd and when he challenged its authority to do so, a court was set up to hear his plea. The Rafi then challenged the Mapai, led by Ben-Gurion's successor as Prime Minister, Levi Eshkol."

Sala Gaspar, Barcelone, 1965. sheets loose as issued in a linen-covered solander box, the title printed on the uppers The complete portfolio, comprising thirteen lithographs printed in colors, each signed in pencil and numbered from an edition of 30 with title page, justification and list of plates, this copy numbered xxx, printed by Jacques Desjobert, Paris on B.F.K. Rives paper, the full sheets printed to the edges. Done by Clavé as a tribute to El Greco to celebrate the 350 anniversary of his death. I remember that Clavé told us how moved he was by the work of El Greco, and particularly by the power of Nobleman with a Hand on his Chest. On the occasion of the publication of an album about Clavé's reinterpretation of El Greco, we travelled with him to Toledo and followed him on visits to all the museums where El Greco's work was on display. On seeing the great masterpieces, Clavé was just as awed as any other museum visitor. In 1963 he undertook a series of large canvases, as well as lithographs and etchings, on the theme of Tribute to Domenikos Theotokopoulos. In 1965, Clavé moved to the south of France. His tapisseries-assemblages were presented at the Sala Gaspar in Barcelona at the same time as Tribute to Domenikos Theotokopoulos. ("Clavé solitario y azul" by Josep Casamartina).         Alcoholics Anonymous Inscribed by Bill and Lois to one of Bill Wilson's sponsees

New York: Alcoholics Anonymous World Services Inc., 1965. Second edition. Hardcover. Fine. Alcoholics Anonymous. [Bill Wilson and Lois Wilson]. Alcoholics Anonymous. The Story of How Many Thousands and Men and Women have Recovered from Alcoholism. New York: Alcoholics Anonymous World Service Inc., 1965. Second Edition, Seventh Printing. Inscribed by Bill and Lois Wilson on verso of front free endpaper : "Dear Chuck -/ Lois Joins me / in all affection / and in confident / faith that the / years to come / will be your finest / Ever. / Bill / Slipping Stones / Jan 15 / 66". Below that is Lois' inscription in her own hand: "With Heaps of Love / Lois." Octavo. xxx, 575 pages. Bound in full blue morocco with gilt rules on covers, and inner dentelles, light-yellow silk bookmark bound in. Spine in six compartments with gilt lettering, rules and decorations. Top edge gilt. Lovely blue binding in beautiful condition, believed to be one of only five copies so bound by AA World Services in New York in 1965. A most unusual and desirable signed copy. Very near fine (trivial shelfwear wear only). "Chuck" here is Chuck Gibian, who was actually sponsored in AA by Bill Wilson. They became close friends over the years. This copy comes with a twelve page typescript by Chuck together with his AA "Birds of a Feather" pin. Chuck's typescript has minor annotations and corrections in ink, old paperclup rust on the top left corner Very good. More Information: Lois Wilson (1891-1988), the wife of AA cofounder Bill Wilson, was herself the cofounder of Al-Anon, a support group for family and friends of alcoholics. Birds of a Feather International is an organization formed in response to the need of pilots and other cockpit crew members for a forum in which the subject of alcohol and drug addiction can be discussed with impunity and immunity. The organization's website traces their beginning to 1972. By 1976, after a great deal of planning and education and with the assistance of the FAA and United Airlines, the organization was in full swing and ready for the next step. Chuck was an early "Bird" with 12 years of sobriety. He served as a panel member on behalf of the National Council on Alcoholism. In November 1976, the FAA issued their exemption letter allowing sober recovering alcoholics to fly as crew members. Chuck was the first to apply and receive his exemption on January 15, 1977 (Birds of a Feather Website). The 12-page testimonial included here recounts Chuck's experience as a professional airline pilot and recovering alcoholic. His "Bird of a Feather" pin is attached to the last page of the typescript. This would be a centerpiece for any AA collection, unusual binding and a fine inscription by Bill and Lois to an actual Wilson sponsee.

Accompanied by a letter of provenance and a certificate of authenticity from Beatles expert Perry Cox (Author of 'The Official Price Guid to the Beatles Records & Memorabilia'), noting that "this is the only signed playing card I've examined by any member of the Beatles."The English guitarist, singer, songwriter, and music and film producer achieved international fame as the lead guitarist of the Beatles. Often referred to as "the quiet Beatle", Harrison embraced Indian mysticism and helped broaden the horizons of his fellow Beatles as well as their Western audience by incorporating Indian instrumentation in their music.  Although the majority of the Beatles' songs were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, most Beatles albums from 1965 onwards contained at least two Harrison compositions and his songs for the group included "Taxman", "Within You Without You", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Here Comes the Sun" and "Something", the last of which became the Beatles' second-most covered song.

        A Way of Seeing

Viking Press, New York 1965 - 78 pp., 9.25 x 7.75 inches. Cloth in illustrated dust-jacket. A very fine copy, a trifle dusty on the top edge, with the very slight toning of pages present in virtually all copies, in a sparkling, near fine jacket that has trivial touches of wear at the corners, minuscule chips at the top of the spine, and a couple of mild creases along the edges. Levitt's first book, a classic collection of more than fifty of her New York City street photographs, mostly of children and their games and chalk drawings, shot in the 1940s and printed beautifully in gravure, with an essay by James Agee, written in the late 1940s when the book was first planned, but left unpublished at his death in 1955. Cited in all major reference guides to photobooks, including "The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century" by Andrew Roth, "The Photobook: A History" by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, and "The Open Book" by Andrew Roth.
