Signed 1965 Allan D'Arcangelo Paris Review Serigraph

1965 - "Paris Review" by Allan D'Arcangelo, Signed Serigraph printed in 1965 from an edition size of 150. The overall is size of the Serigraph is 40 x 26.25 inches. The condition of this piece has been graded as B: Very Good Condition, with slight signs of handling or age. Here is some supplemental information about the Serigraph: Edition of 150, signed and numbered by the artist. The Paris Review publishes writings and poetry by aspiring writers young and old. The publications are paid for partly by the sale of artwork created and sold by the Paris Review.D’Arcangelo is better known for his pictures of highways and roadblocks, which pictured deep perspectival vistas in a simplified, flat plane, the view as seen from the driver’s seat as one zooms along the seemingly never-ending American highway in most any state. Next came a series "Barriers," in which cropped, abstracted imagery of road barriers were superimposed over the one-point perspectival highway vistas. These were a move further towards concern with abstract, two-dimensionality without negating the element culled from seen aspects of the American landscape. The series called "Constellations" (there are 120 in all) further abstracted the view of road barriers into perspectival, jutting patterns thrusting across the canvas against a white ground. The element of the seen is never obliterated and always primary in D’Arcangelo’s dialectic, as amply evidenced in his return to highway imagery in the 1970s. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Collection of Original Drawings, 1963 - 2001

An important and interesting collection of five original pencil drawings of various sizes, together with a signed program and an original photograph. Simply matted and backed (not attached) by foamcore, inscribed on the verso with details in the hand of Frederick Maddox. Provenance: The estate of Frederick Maddox/Lincoln Kirstein. Details as follows:The Painting Gallery at the Glass House. Original architectural print on paper with drawings in pencil throughout. 34.5 x 42.5 cm, stamped lower right "Philip Johnson Associates/Architects / 375 Park Avenue...". Designed by Philip Johnson and constructed in 1965, the Painting Gallery is an earth-berm structure, a modern interpretation of the ancient monument, the Treasury of Atreus in Mycenae, Greece. Shaped roughly like a cloverleaf, the structure resembles a large grassy mound on the outside with concrete roof deck forming a cap on top. The building houses Johnson's earthly treasures and an important part of his legacy: his art collection. This collection tells the story of Johnson as a patron of the arts, as well as the story of his relationship with his partner, David Whitney. Johnson had been involved with The Museum of Modern Art since its establishment in 1929, but after meeting David Whitney in 1960, Johnson became an avid art collector. In 1986 Johnson donated the Glass House property to the National Trust, and two years after his death in 2005, it opened to the public as a historic site.Original drawing on white paper approx 13 x 22 cm. Signed and dated lower right "P.J. 2.12.63," identified on the mount verso as a sketch done while expressing his "admiration of Sullivan's building in Soho and his theatre in Chicago," and also (in reference to the lower area of the drawing) while "currently fascinated by ancient Egyptian palace walls (exterior)." Original drawing on thin yellow paper 16.5 x 26.5 cm. Identified on the mount verso as a 1963 sketch for the "Amon Carter Musuem / Elevation (Facade) / Plan of Building."Original drawing on thin yellow paper 18 x 27 cm. Identified on the mount verso as a late 1980's "Sketch #1 of a sequence," done "in studio of New Canaan property."Original large drawing on thin yellow paper 31 x 41 cm, signed and dated 2001 in ink. The structure is unidentified, though may related to the PPG Place in Pittsburgh, PA. Program from the New York City Ballet premiere of A Mass (Missa Sicca), presented in memory of Joseph Duell and signed on the cover in black ink "PHilip Johnson." The production, made possible by a gift "given in admiration of Philip Johnson's and Lincoln Kirstein's remarkable achievements," was staged by Peter Martins and Robert LaFosse to a commissioned score by Michael Torke, staged by Alain Vaes as inspired by Johnson's designs for a still unbuilt "Pilgrimage Chapel." Together with an original Frederick Maddox color photograph of Philip Johnson and David Whitney at the NY State Theater watching the NYCB performance. The influential American architect Philip Johnson is especially known for his postmodern work since the 1980s. In 1930, he founded the Department of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. In 1978 he was awarded an American Institute of ArchitectsGold Medal and in 1979 the first Pritzker Architecture Prize. The architect Frederick Maddox (1939 - 2013), was early on encouraged by Philip Johnson and it was he who introduced him to Lincoln Kirstein and his wife Fidelma, with whom he then had a long and enduring friendship, inheriting their home in Weston upon their deaths. Maddox established his architectural firm in 1975, and for 38 years provided architectural and engineering services in the Manhattan and Long Island areas.

Warren Beatty on the set of Mickey One (Still photograph from the 1965 film)

Los Angeles: Florin / Columbia Pictures, 1965. Vintage black-and-white single weight still photograph from the US release of the 1965 film. Some say that the New Hollywood era began with Bonnie and Clyde in 1967, others say Mickey One in 1965. Either way you look at it, the director was Arthur Penn. A striking candid photograph of Warren Beatty from the set of the film, his profile cut in half by the vertical glass cutline between two swinging doors. Beatty was not only the muse for Penn's avant-garde tale of a comic who runs afoul of the mob, but also the crazed youngster who would get Penn assigned to Bonnie and Clyde and initiate the second golden age of cinema. Stan Getz composed and arranged the progressive and somewhat classical score for the film, where he performed improvisations against the backdrop of a full orchestra. Set in Chicago, and shot on location there. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Fine.

A collection of poetry, Sussicran (Narcissus spelled backwards) was Fainlight's only book published in his lifetime. He was a loner, gay, a heavy drug user, and spent time in mental hospitals. Hughes tried to convince Fainlight to publish another collection but he refused. His sister published a posthumous collection Selected Poems. This title is scarce. .

        The Orchard Keeper

New York: Random House, 1965. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. A Near Fine copy of McCarthy's first book, in like dust jacket. The top stain is partially faded, there is a small bump on the lower edge of the rear board and evidence of a bookplate removed from the front free end paper. The dust jacket is price-clipped and has minor toning and wear at the extremities. Despite the defects an attractive copy and, on the whole, a bright, unfaded copy of this scarce debut. Tracing Biblical themes from the book of Genesis, McCarthy's first novel illustrates the politics of four men in an idyllic hamlet in rural Tennessee and its ultimate demise. The bliss of their home, in communion with nature, is shaken by a greedy antagonist that throws them from their Eden and peels away their innocence and ignorance. Upon its release, "The Orchard Keeper" won the William Faulkner Foundation notable first novel award in 1966 and established a solid foundation for McCarthy's early career. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Help! (Collection of 4 still photographs from the 1965 film)

London and Los Angeles: Walter Shenson Films / United Artists, 1965. Collection of four vintage black-and-white single weight still photographs from the release of the 1965 British-American film. All four of the boys wonderfully represented here, gals in tow, having a fine time on the ice (John and George), in the jungle (Paul), in a bubble car (George), and on top of a tank (everyone). Richard Lester's auteur take on the Fab Four propelled United Artists far into the black at a time when most of the aging Hollywood executives had never even heard of the Beatles. As with "A Hard Day's Night" the year before, a wonderful intersection of pop, youthful innocence, culture shift, and legend-making. Shot on location in London, Liverpool, Buckinghamshire, throughout Middlesex, and in Salzburg, Austria. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Near Fine. Complete collation details available on request.
