        Half-Life

Cambridge, Mass.: Lowell-Adams House Printers, 1965. 1 pp. broadside, folio, 450 x 295 mm, printed on recto only. Protective folder, the whole housed in a custom-made folding box, leather title label to spine. Slight age-toning, unobtrusive tape residue to lower edge, two small staple punctures to top left corner, pinhole to bottom left. Illustration above poem by Laurence Scott, signed by him: 'Scott XI/65 For M.J.Smith'. First edition, No. 68 of 75 copies, SIGNED BY BOTH AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR AT THEIR RESPECTIVE CONTRIBUTIONS. First appearance of this poem in this form, 'Revised from an old note-book, c. 1931', according to a printed note beneath its appearance here -- although it had been revised once before prior to this printing, a very different version having appeared in 1935 in Cambridge Left bearing the title Interview. The Lowell-Adams House Printers were a group of Harvard students who during the 1960s produced a number of finely hand-printed broadsides and slim volumes, in limited editions. Often illustrated, their output featured an eclectic list of literary heavyweights both dead and alive, among them Oscar Wilde, Marianne Moore, Jack Kerouac, Lewis Carroll, John Updike, Noel Coward -- and this scarcity by Auden. Not all copies we have examined of this broadside are signed by both contributors, and some are additionally inscribed by one or the other. This copy was signed by both, with Scott dating his signature 'XI/65' and adding the inscription 'For M.J.Smith'. A very attractive copy, housed in a custom-made folding box. Bloomfield A-51

Sweet Dreams Baby! from 11 Pop Artists, Volume III (C. 39)

      - Screenprint in colours, 1965, on wove paper, signed in pencil, numbered from the edition of 200 (there were also approximately 5 artist's proofs), published by Original Editions, New York, 95.6 x 70.1cm Considered to be one of the pioneering artist's first "true" Pop prints Sweet Dreams, Baby! confronts the viewer with the very essence of the Pop movement: mass culture directly in front of you – bold, vibrant, and dynamic. Bursting with stylized text and Ben Day dots, Lichtenstein utilises the pervasiveness of comic books to instantly make a connection with the viewer. The dual nature of a normally affectionate phrase, "Sweet Dreams, Baby!" highlights the artist's wit and sends his "goodbyes" to the man who was just knocked out. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        SOME LOS ANGELES APARTMENTS

(RUSCHA, EDWARD). Ruscha, Edward. SOME LOS ANGELES APARTMENTS. Los Angeles: Self-Published, 1965. First Edition 1/700. 12mo. Printed Wrappers with Glassine. Artist's Book. Fine./Near Fine.. np (48pp), 34 b&w illustrations. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Some Los Angeles Apartments" is Ed Ruscha's third artist book - a wry yet heartfelt photographic survey of the subtle beauty of the post-war Southern California rental property construction boom. A spectacularly bright, most handsome example of the uncommon 1965 first edition (entry B3 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999" which is also cited on page 141 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", pages 198-201 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 105 of "From Fair to Fine 2", and page 226 of "From Fair to Fine 3") limited to seven hundred unnumbered copies in the publisher's glassine wrapper showing some typical minor age patination along with a few tiny closed tears along the top edge of the rear panel. All in all, this is an exceptional example of this important little gem that is often confused with the 1990 Whitney Museum exhibition catalogue of virtually the same title.         Feste religiose in Sicilia

Bari: Leonardo da Vinci, Piccolo Orizzonte , 1965. Rilegato tela, sovracoperta (cloth, dust jacket). Molto Buono (Very Good). 16mo. pp. 222. Molto Buono (Very Good). Sovraccoperta rinforzata professionalmente lungo i bordi con intervento reversibile in carta Giappone (Anonymous dedication to a well-know Sicilian painter at the first blank page. DJ professionally restored). Prima edizione (First edition).

[S&H Green Stamp Invitation / Poster from Warhol's 1965 ICA Retrospective]

Philadelphia: Institute of Contemporary Art, 1965. First Edition. Fine. Original folded poster invitation; 3 3/4” x 9” folded and 22 3/4” x 22 1/2” open. Minor toning and wear at edges. Near fine. Famed Green Stamp poster/invitation for Warhol's first retrospective, held at the University of Pennsylvania's Institute of Contemporary Art from October 8th through November 21st, 1965. An infamous event: curator Sam Green issued so many of these invitations that the venue was mobbed. Arthur Danto, in his recent biography of Warhol, described the scene: "There was a crowd of at least two thousand rapturous persons, most of them students. No one had expected a crowd that large, and the curator, Sam Green, to be prudent, removed most of the paintings from the walls, leaving the gallery all but bare. But the crowd had not come so much to look at the art as to see Warhol and his consort. Chants of 'Andy and Edie [Sedgwick]! Andy and Edie!' went up. People were jostled and trampled. It became a problem of crowd control much like what was happening at rock concerts. Andy, Edie, and their party [which included Green] found safety on an iron staircase, where [...] they waved at the crowds below. Finally a hole was axed in the ceiling, and [they] were able to escape to the floor above. Crowd behavior like that [...] was unheard of at art events [...] The change did not escape Warhol's notice. 'To think of it happening at an art opening,' he said. 'Even a Pop Art opening. But then, we weren't just at the art exhibit — we were the exhibit.'" (5). A cornerstone of Warhol's career, an event that demonstrated his growing fame and cemented his reputation as one of the most exciting artists of the 1960's.

Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For James You have my best wishes from Ian Fleming." A small stain to the front panel, spine slightly cocked, an excellent example in the original dust jacket with a few small chips. Uncommon signed and inscribed as Fleming passed away in the year of publication. You Only Live Twice is the eleventh novel and twelfth book in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. It is the last novel by Fleming to be published in his lifetime, with subsequent works being published posthumously.         The Man with the Golden Gun

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1965. Octavo. Original brown boards, titles to spine bronze, green and white endpapers. With the pictorial dust jacket. An excellent copy with some faint spotting to edges of text block, in the jacket with toned spine. First edition, first impression, second state, binding B, without the gun design on the front board. In keeping with the design of the other Bond titles an appropriate device was stamped onto the front board, and the first state of the book bears a golden gun on the cover. However, for reasons either of expense or practicality this was abandoned very early in the binding run.

        A FAMILY ALBUM

McGraw-Hill Book Company (1965), New York - Cloth-backed boards. Illustrated with 92 photographs. A family history written by Johnson's mother with an introduction by the president. SIGNED by the President with a felt-tip pen on the half-title page and INSCRIBED and SIGNED again on the dedication page: "To ------/from his friend/Lyndon B. Johnson/Xmas' 72." Books genuinely signed by LBJ are quite scarce, and most of those are copies of THE VANTAGE POINT, usually signed on a bookplate.
