Alcoholics Anonymous Inscribed by Bill and Lois to one of Bill Wilson's sponsees

New York: Alcoholics Anonymous World Services Inc., 1965. Second edition. Hardcover. Fine. Alcoholics Anonymous. [Bill Wilson and Lois Wilson]. Alcoholics Anonymous. The Story of How Many Thousands and Men and Women have Recovered from Alcoholism. New York: Alcoholics Anonymous World Service Inc., 1965. Second Edition, Seventh Printing. Inscribed by Bill and Lois Wilson on verso of front free endpaper : "Dear Chuck -/ Lois Joins me / in all affection / and in confident / faith that the / years to come / will be your finest / Ever. / Bill / Slipping Stones / Jan 15 / 66". Below that is Lois' inscription in her own hand: "With Heaps of Love / Lois." Octavo. xxx, 575 pages. Bound in full blue morocco with gilt rules on covers, and inner dentelles, light-yellow silk bookmark bound in. Spine in six compartments with gilt lettering, rules and decorations. Top edge gilt. Lovely blue binding in beautiful condition, believed to be one of only five copies so bound by AA World Services in New York in 1965. A most unusual and desirable signed copy. Very near fine (trivial shelfwear wear only). "Chuck" here is Chuck Gibian, who was actually sponsored in AA by Bill Wilson. They became close friends over the years. This copy comes with a twelve page typescript by Chuck together with his AA "Birds of a Feather" pin. Chuck's typescript has minor annotations and corrections in ink, old paperclup rust on the top left corner Very good. More Information: Lois Wilson (1891-1988), the wife of AA cofounder Bill Wilson, was herself the cofounder of Al-Anon, a support group for family and friends of alcoholics. Birds of a Feather International is an organization formed in response to the need of pilots and other cockpit crew members for a forum in which the subject of alcohol and drug addiction can be discussed with impunity and immunity. The organization's website traces their beginning to 1972. By 1976, after a great deal of planning and education and with the assistance of the FAA and United Airlines, the organization was in full swing and ready for the next step. Chuck was an early "Bird" with 12 years of sobriety. He served as a panel member on behalf of the National Council on Alcoholism. In November 1976, the FAA issued their exemption letter allowing sober recovering alcoholics to fly as crew members. Chuck was the first to apply and receive his exemption on January 15, 1977 (Birds of a Feather Website). The 12-page testimonial included here recounts Chuck's experience as a professional airline pilot and recovering alcoholic. His "Bird of a Feather" pin is attached to the last page of the typescript. This would be a centerpiece for any AA collection, unusual binding and a fine inscription by Bill and Lois to an actual Wilson sponsee.

Signed Ace of Hearts Playing Card

Original pencil signature, "George Harrison," on an Ace of Hearts playing card. In fine condition. Accompanied by a letter of provenance and a certificate of authenticity from Beatles expert Perry Cox (Author of 'The Official Price Guid to the Beatles Records & Memorabilia'), noting that "this is the only signed playing card I've examined by any member of the Beatles."The English guitarist, singer, songwriter, and music and film producer achieved international fame as the lead guitarist of the Beatles. Often referred to as "the quiet Beatle", Harrison embraced Indian mysticism and helped broaden the horizons of his fellow Beatles as well as their Western audience by incorporating Indian instrumentation in their music.  Although the majority of the Beatles' songs were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, most Beatles albums from 1965 onwards contained at least two Harrison compositions and his songs for the group included "Taxman", "Within You Without You", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Here Comes the Sun" and "Something", the last of which became the Beatles' second-most covered song.

        A Way of Seeing

Viking Press, New York 1965 - 78 pp., 9.25 x 7.75 inches. Cloth in illustrated dust-jacket. A very fine copy, a trifle dusty on the top edge, with the very slight toning of pages present in virtually all copies, in a sparkling, near fine jacket that has trivial touches of wear at the corners, minuscule chips at the top of the spine, and a couple of mild creases along the edges. Levitt's first book, a classic collection of more than fifty of her New York City street photographs, mostly of children and their games and chalk drawings, shot in the 1940s and printed beautifully in gravure, with an essay by James Agee, written in the late 1940s when the book was first planned, but left unpublished at his death in 1955. Cited in all major reference guides to photobooks, including "The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century" by Andrew Roth, "The Photobook: A History" by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, and "The Open Book" by Andrew Roth. GOD BLESS YOU, MR. ROSEWATER - OR PEARLS BEFORE SWINE [Rare UK proof copy with very scarce trial proof dustwrapper]

Jonathan Cape, London 1965 - Very rare proof copy with ultra rare precursory variant illustrated dustwrapper. Provisional publication date of October 21st 1965 stated on rear wrapper flap. Proof copy of the first impression of the first UK edition. ***Kurt Vonnegut's fifth novel, published four years before Slaughterhouse Five. ***Very good in red Jonathan Cape logo printed red card wrappers, with publisher's original typed blurb on white paper pasted to front wrapper, and dated the month of October, as called for. Child's blue biro scribble to front free endpaper [which at first glance resembles a wild version of Vonnegut's signature!]. Light reading creases to spine. Spine tight. All other pages clean. Red paper wrapper bright. ***In a good precursory variant trial mauve and pink colour illustrated outsize dustwrapper, with original publisher's price of 21s net. Dustwrapper rubbed and creased. Child's small blue biro light scribble over titles to front panel of dustwrapper. Small scuffs to front panel of dustwrapper. Edges of dustwrapper creased, rubbed and nicked (being outsize for the proof edition). Head of spine of dustwrapper creased and rubbed with small tears and tiny chips. Top edge of rear panel of dustwrapper creased, rubbed with tiny tears. ***200mm x 132mm. 217 pages. ***'Kurt Vonnegut has been called by Graham Greene "one of the best living American writers"; this is his best book. ***It infiltrates its subject (which might be called the American way of life) and leaves it apparently as solid as ever but, in face, riddled. ***It concerns the Rosewaters, a multi-millionaire American family whose fortune originated in the great bygone days of laissez-faire, bribery and corruption. ***In particular, it is about the family's sole prospective heir, Eliot Rosewater. His eccentricity is that he give money away without even requiring them to feel grateful. In a drab room in a small Indiana town he operates a one-man benevolent aid society. He helps people. It makes him happy. ***It also makes him, by most standards, crazy. To prove that he actually is crazy (and thereby divert the vast Rosewater inheritance to a more tractable distant cousin) is the aim of Mushari, a lawyer. ***The plot moves over the whole spectrum of American life, sparing nothing and no one, except Eliot Rosewater himself and a science fiction writer named Trout.' (Quote from typed printed publisher's blurb label pasted to front cover and inside front and rear dustwrapper blurb). ***'One of the best living American writers' Graham Greene.' (Review quote from rear of trial dustwrapper blurb). ***A rare proof of the first impression of the first UK edition complete with ultra scarce precursor variant illustrated dustwrapper, of interest to collectors of Kurt Vonnegut and rare literary first editions and first edition proof copies. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Patriarch Tree: Thirty Poems

Worcester: Stanbrook Abbey Press, 1965. Middleton, Bernard. Small quarto. 81pp. One of 500 copies beautifully printed in red, black, and green on handmade paper. Title-page decorations by Margaret Adams. Lithographed portrait of the author tipped in. With an English translation on each page facing the original French text by Raissa Maritain, who was the wife of French philosopher Jacques Maritain. This copy has been specially bound by Bernard Middleton in full russet crushed levant, elaborately paneled on both covers with alternating rules of black and gilt and a single ivy border tooled in black. Spine in six compartments with a single wheat tool in five, and a green morocco lettering piece. Richly tooled turn-ins frame a doublure of handmade Japanese paper, which also forms the endleaves. Signed by the printer, Dame Hildelith Cumming, on the colophon, with an additional note in ink indicating that this copy was bound by Middleton for the V&A exhibition entitled "Stanbrook Abbey Press and Sir Sydney Cockerell: A Centenary," which ran from November 1976 to February 1977. Laid in is an ALs from Dame Cumming to the owner of the present copy. Also laid in is the prospectus, which has been corrected in ink by Dame Cumming, and an offprint of the English title page, which has been annotated by her in pencil. According to Butcher, Patriarch Tree was Cumming's "personal favorite of all the books she printed at Stanbrook." This elegant piece of printing is completed with a sumptuous binding, which is housed in a morocco trimmed slipcase. (Butcher A12).
