Octavo (21.5cm); pale gray cloth, with titles stamped in black on spine; dustjacket; [10], 278pp. A fresh, Fine copy, giving every appearance of being unread. A novel in which, "more extremely than any previous Dick book, inhabits the badlands within which the real and the ersatz interpentrate: suppliers of a hallucinogenic drug which makes life tolerable for Martian colonists facing opposition from the sinister Eldritch, whose own new drug, Chew-Z (imaged in language which recalls the Communion wafer), pre-empts reality entirely" (The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction). A superior copy, ranked #44 on David Pringle's list "Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels." Provenance: From the estate of science fiction publisher and editor Franklyn M. Dietz, founder of the Lunarians (NY Science Fiction Society). Levack 40a; Sargent, p.294.

(RUSCHA, EDWARD). Ruscha, Edward. SOME LOS ANGELES APARTMENTS. Los Angeles: Self-Published, 1965. First Edition 1/700. 12mo. Printed Wrappers in Glassine. Artist's Book. Near Fine./Near Fine.. np (48pp), 34 b&w illustrations. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Some Los Angeles Apartments" is Ed Ruscha's third artist book - a wry yet heartfelt photographic survey of the subtle beauty of the post-war Southern California rental property construction boom. A bright, most handsome example of the uncommon 1965 first edition (entry B3 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999" which is also cited on page 141 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", pages 198-201 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 105 of "From Fair to Fine 2", and page 226 of "From Fair to Fine 3") limited to seven hundred unnumbered copies in the publisher's glassine wrapper showing some typical minor age patination along with a tiny missing chips along the bottom of the rear panel. All in all, this is an exceptional example of this important little gem that is often confused with the 1990 Whitney Museum exhibition catalogue of virtually the same title.         Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chapas and Yucatan

Barre, MA: Barre Publishers, 1965. Cloth. Fine. Frederick Catherwood. An all-but-immaculate copy of this 1965 re-issue of Frederick Catherwood's landmark 1844 "views of ancient monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan". The 1965 facsimile is in its own right a thing of beauty and quite sought after, only 500 copies having been issued by the publisher. Except for the slightest trace of light scuffing to the front panel of the publisher's elegant box (measuring 21 1/2" tall), the portfolio is as new. Frederick Catherwood's 25 remarkable chromolithographed plates are in pristine condition, as is the "outline map of Central America & Yucatan" and the accompanying caption booklet (housed in the front pastedown), giving context to and detailed description of each plate.

Autograph manuscript signed: Julius Robert Mayer:Die Entdeckung des Gesetzes der Erhaltung der Energie

1965. Gerlach, Walther (1889-1979). Julius Robert Mayer: Die Entdeckung der Erhaltung der Energie. Autograph Manuscript Draft, signed. 4-1/3 pp., written in pencil and ballpoint pen on rectos of 5 sheets; sheets stapled together in upper left corner. Munich, January 21, 1965. 300 x 212 mm. Creased where previously folded, very slight wear and soiling. Very good. English translation included. Draft of Gerlach's lecture commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Julius Robert Mayer, one of the founders of the principle of the conservation of energy-the first law of thermodynamics. Gerlach, "contributed to many experimental topics, especially the ones connected with radiation and quantum theory (e.g. together with Alice Golsen, he determined the pressure of light quantitatively); he made important contributions to the development of modern methods of chemical spectral analysis, the physics of the (technical) magnetization curve, and measurements on artificial and natural radioactivity" (Mehra & Rechenberg, I, p. 436). He is best known as one of the discoverers of the Stern-Gerlach effect (1922), by which Otto Stern and Gerlach demonstrated the empirical validity of Sommerfeld's spatial quantization; i.e., the discrete orientation in space of electronic orbits. The effect is created by passing an atomic beam of silver atoms through a magnetic field of strong inhomogeneity, which splits the silver beam into two separate beams. "This result then proved space quantization as well as once again confirming the existence of stationery states. However, it also went far beyond the Bohr-Sommerfeld theory, as Einstein and Paul Ehrenfest demonstrated by their calculation of the time needed by the silver atoms to be oriented in the two directions: they estimated a time for the (classical) magnetic interaction of 1011 s, in contrast to the observation-which gave a time of less than 10-4 s. Thus one of the bases of the existing atomic theory broke down" (Twentieth Century Physics I, pp. 164-65).The energy-conservation principle was arrived at more or less simultaneously in the mid-19th century by a number of scientists, the most important being Helmholtz, Joule and Mayer, but Mayer was the first, as Helmholtz acknowledged, to articulate a general law of energy conservation. Gerlach's lecture gives a brief history of Mayer's discovery and its reception:The law of conservation of energy, first understood empirically by [Mayer], is the fundamental principle of rational natural science and technology. It can be stated that the entire area of natural science research is governed by the validity of the energy law throughout the inanimate and animate world, through the macro- and micro-cosmos, through the technical utilization of apparent matter such as the insight into elementary particles, through cosmic processes, and within living cells. . . .It is thus no coincidence that Mayer as well as Helmholtz, who established the energy theorem five years after [Mayer] in his writings on the conservation of force, making use of the same considerations, but with different motivation, came not from physics but from physiology. In it the picture of a life force dominated, even though it was perceived as being unsatisfactory, which was supposed to control processes in the organic realm, as mechanical force did in inanimate nature. After unfavorable experiences with "natural philosophy", that blurry mixture, physicists rejected generalizations and extrapolations for fear of allowing it [natural philosophy] back in again. Therefore, Poggendorff also did not print Helmholtz, in the Annalen der Physik, and Helmholtz said in 1854 that Robert Mayer was the first one who had dared to state such a general law. . . .In 1842 Mayer calculated the mechanical equivalent of heat from the Dulong-Petit experiments, and with it the low efficiency of the steam engine, whose principle of operation he was the first to explain correctly through the consumption of heat as the equivalent of the work produced, . . .Mayer's accomplishment was not recognized for a long time. Helmholtz, and Joule as well, rejected his arguments, unjustly criticized the calculation of the heat, and unqualified individuals ridiculed him in public. Only Clausius quoted Mayer's first work and the equivalent as a first principle of his thermodynamics in 1850. But at that time Mayer became seriously mentally ill. Only now did the energy law establish itself in the thought process of natural science. The Basel chemist Schoenbein referred to Mayer's accomplishment in 1858, and Justus Liebig praised him as the father of the greatest discovery of the century. A rapid sequence of the highest honors then followed. How Robert Mayer arrived at his idea-some kind of a brainstorm on his trip to Surabaya in the summer of 1840-and even more how the self-taught physicist found the decisive experiments in the literature that were needed for his new concept, how he properly described the steam engine quantitatively, against all [prevailing] opinions-all this belongs to the mysteries about which Johannes Kepler said: "It seems to me that the paths by which men come to understand heavenly things are almost as remarkable as the nature of these things themselves."Offered with Gerlach's manuscript is a copy of Alwin Mittasch's Kraft-Leben-Geist: Eine Lese aus Robert Mayers Schriften (1942), published to commemorate the centennial of Mayer's discovery of the law of energy conservation.

Provo. No. 1 (July 1965) through No. 15 (March 1967). (All published)

1965. Altogether 15 issues, ranging between 12-45 pp., of the official mouthpiece of the anarchic countercultural Provo movement in the Netherlands, including contributions from Roel Van Duyn, Olaf Stoop, and Ab Pruis among others, the journal was used to promote and incite action for social change, heavily illustrated throughout with political cartoons and images from photographs. Nos. 1-12: Tall small 4to. Wrpps., covers slightly rubbed and chipped. Nos. 13-15: Tall folio. Self-wrpps., folded into quarters, folds age-darkened, some small tears along folds. Amsterdam (1965-1967). Provo was known for their happenings, which were designed to attract police intervention, thereby inciting revolt. The group, heavily influenced by performance artist Robert Jasper Grootveld and the philosophy student Roel Van Duyn, promoted numerous schemes for the betterment of society, one of the more famous being the White Bicycle Plan that strove to replace cars in the city center with free bicycles. The groups also disturbed Princess Beatrix's wedding with a smoke bomb in protest to her fiancé's membership to a Nazi youth group, and demonstrated against the Vietnam war. When the movement began to be accepted by mainstream culture, signified in 1967 with the election of a Provo representative, it was disbanded and a funeral was held to mark the occasion.

        A Spaniard in the Works

Cape, UK 1965 - 1st Edition 1965. A lovely example of Lennon's second book with his autograph/signed name to the endpaper. Very rare book to be signed and un-dedicated. John Lennon's autograph at the height of Beatle mania was very difficult to obtain. His previous book 'In His Own Write' had a signing session at Foyles in 1964 so the book appears more regular albeit as a reprint. He did not undertake any such commercial signing sessions for this book so they very rarely appear on the open market. Excellent provenance will be made available when purchased. Book is near fine and in lovely square tight condition. Nice sharp corners. A few very light foxing spots to odd pages. Pages very nice and clean. Never issued with a wrapper. A cracking example. More images can be taken upon request. Ref 9312 Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Feste religiose in Sicilia

Molto Buono (Very Good). Sovraccoperta rinforzata professionalmente lungo i bordi con intervento reversibile in carta Giappone (Anonymous dedication to a well - know Sicilian painter at the first blank page. DJ professionally restored). Prima edizione (First edition). \
