EL VIEJO EDUA. CRONICAS DE GUERRA

Editora del Consejo Nacional de Cultura, Havana 1965 - Original pictorial wraps bound in black morocco-backed gilt-lettered dark blue morocco leather; 97 pages. Lengthily INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the half-title page by Fidel Castro to Lieutenant Pedro García Peláez sending him this book in acknowledgment of his birthday and the wars that they have fought in together. The lieutenant would later become General Pedro García Pelaez, a top military aide to Castro, the head of the Cuban Military Mission in Angola, and the Chief of Combat Readiness. In 1959 he was head of the personal escort of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro. Though not dated, this was likely inscribed close to publication. Books signed by Castro are scarce, and this is a specially interesting example. Born in the Dominican Republic, Maximo Gomez was Cuba's military commander in that country's War of Independence (1895-1898) and a hero of the struggle which ended Spanish domination over Cuba. He refused the presidential nomination offered to him in 1901, and which he was expected to win unopposed, mainly because he always disliked politics, and after 40 years of living in Cuba he still felt that, being Dominican-born, he should not be the civil leader of Cuba.         Hallelujah Die Hügel [Hallelujah the Hills] (Original German poster for the 1963 film)

Peter-Presse / Atlas Films, Munich 1965 - Original 1965 German A1 poster for the 1963 US film. Designed by Heinz EdelmanFrom the collection of noted film historian Amos Vogel. Full provenance available. An iconoclastic, utterly American underground film best understood by way of the reactions it receives from viewers outside the US. Time Out Guide notes: "a highpoint from the 'innocent' years of American underground cinema, and something of an enduring delight for real film buffs. Mekas' comedy starts from an enthusiastic parody of French 'new wave' concepts like using two actresses to play one character, and manages to go on to incorporate references (part satire, part homage) to what seems like every other branch of cinema extant . from samurai movies to Chaplinesque slapstick.hitting the intended tone between love and skepticism."Jean-Luc Godard: "Next to the two big shots of the New York School, Clarke and Cassavetes, [Mekas] seemed a poor relative, especially since people got him confused with his brother [Jonas Mekas]. 'Hallelujah the Hills' [proves] clearly that Adolfas is someone to be reckoned with. He is a master in the field of pure invention, that is to say, in working dangerously, 'without a net. His film, made according to the good old principle, "one idea for each shot," has the lovely scent of fresh ingenuity and crafty sweetness. Physical efforts and intellectual gags are boldly put together. The slightest thing moves you and makes you laugh: a badly framed bush, a banana stuck in a pocket, a majorette in the snow. He shows life as defined by Ramuz: 'As with a dance, such pleasure to begin, a piston, a clarinet, such sorrow to be done, the head spins and night has come.'"23 x 33 inches, non-archivally mounted on board. Light soil overall. Very Good plus overall.Shipping billed at cost.

        Sparrow Socks

Harper & Row, New York 1965 - This charming and memorable story about the McFee family and their sock machine is the sort parents, uncles, and aunts want to pass on to the next generation. The McFee's amazing sock machine (wonderfully illustrated!) whirrs less and less as the good people of Scotland begin to buy their socks at the big stores downtown, rather than from the little factory's storefront. Young Angus McFee finds his sparrow friend shivering and makes for him a tiny pair of red-and-white striped socks. The other sparrows decide, "We mun have socks too!" and suddenly Angus is making hundreds of wee pairs of socks. Alas, he uses up all the yarn in the wonderful sock machine! But then something wonderful happens . . . . This copy is an apparent first edition with the correct price on the jacket flap. The book is clean and tight with crisp pages and no previous owner name or marks. The dust jacket has some light soil--it is mostly white, so everything shows--but has no chipping or tears. Scarce in jacket, scarce in first, scarce in this condition! Please see photos. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Unique Photo-Album containing original photographs depicting Japanese landmarks and Japan's iconic cultural symbols [WITH 66 SILVER GELATIN PRINTS]

NP, [Budapest] 1965 - Oblong folio (13 3/4 x 20"). [30] tissue-guarded leaves. Original string-bound and gilt-ruled blue cloth. Created by the Japanese Embassy in Budapest, Hungary, this unique photo-album contains 66 original silver gelatin prints depicting Japan's spectacular natural and architectural landmarks, as well as various aspects of its traditional art and culture (Japanese dolls, Bunraku, Noh and Kabuki Theatres), and faith (Buddhism). In order of appearance, the photographs featured in this album are the following:(Recto of first leaf) - The Sankeien Garden (2 photographs): Opened to the public since 1906, the Sankeien Garden is a vast classical Japan garden covering over 175000 square meters which exhibits a number of historic buildings from across Japan. These buildings include a three storied pagoda located high up on a hill deep inside the garden. This pagoda, originally constructed in Kyoto in the mid-1400s, was relocated to Sankei-en in 1914. The entire garden was once the private home of Tomitaro "Sankei" Hara (1869-1939) an extremely wealthy silk merchant. (Verso of first leaf) - Yomeimon Gate at the Nikko Toshogu Shrine (1 photograph): Designated a National Treasure, and one of the most beautiful gates in Japan, Yomeimon Gate is said to have been given the name "Main Gate of the Imperial Court." It is also called "Gate of the Setting Sun" because one could gaze upon it all day and never tire. It is covered with over 500 carvings depicting traditional anecdotes, children playing, sages and wise men. (Recto of second leaf) - The Kofuku-ji Temple (1 photograph): Kofuku-ji is a Buddhist temple that was once one of the powerful Seven Great Temples, in the city of Nara. The structure is one of the eight Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. - The Himeji Castle (1 photograph): : Located in Himeji (Hyogo Prefecture), this hilltop Japanese castle complex is regarded as the finest surviving example of prototypical Japanese castle architecture. It comprises a network of 83 buildings with advanced defensive systems from the feudal period.(Verso of second leaf) - Traditional bronze Japanese lanterns at a temple in Kyoto.(Recto of third leaf) - Osaka Castle (2 photographs): Located in Chuo-ku, Osaka, the castle is one of Japan's most famous landmarks as it played a major role in the unification of the country during the 16th century of the Azuchi-Momoyama period. (Verso of third leaf) - The Sarusawa Pond behind Kofuku-ji Temple at cherry blossom time (1 photograph); - A winter-view of a Japanese lake, with a bridge in the background (1 photograph).(Recto and verso of fourth leaf) - Matsumoto Castle (3 photographs): Located in the city of Matsumoto (Nagano Prefecture), the building is one of Japan's premier historic castles, along with Himeji Castle and Kumamoto Castle. It was completed in the 16th century, and since then has maintained its original wooden interiors and external stonework. At verso is a photograph of the castle ground, with the bridge, moat and pond. (Recto of fifth leaf) - Himeji Castle (1 photograph): See recto of second leaf; - A view of the Hirosaki Castle at cherry blossom time. Built in 1611, the building is a hirayama-style Japanese castle, and was the seat of the Tsugaru clan.(Recto of sixth leaf) - Himeji Castle (2 photographs). One view of the castle during spring-time, and one view of the same castle during winter-time.(Recto of seventh leaf) - Todaiji Temple (1 photograph): One of Japan's most fanous and historically significant temples and a landmark of Nara, Todaiji Temple was constructed in 752 as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples of Japan. Its influence grew so powerfully that the captital was moved from Nara to Nagaoka in 784 in order to lower the temple's influence on government affairs; Himeji Castle (1 photograph): Another view of this spectacular castle already featured in the two previous leaves.         Hombre (Original screenplay for the 1967 film, working script)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1965. Revised draft script for the 1967 film. Copy belonging to an uncredited member of production, with notations throughout in holograph ink. One of the great Westerns, and one that epitomizes the revisionist trend sparked by Elmore Leonard's early novels of the 1950s and 1960s. Newman plays a white man who was raised by the Apaches, and has since had to straddle two worlds, feeling truly comfortable in neither. While riding a stagecoach, he is subject to the racial bias of banker Fredric March and March's snooty wife Barbara Rush. In truth, March is an embezzler, a fact that comes out when the coach is held up by murderous bandit-chief Richard Boone. When the passengers fight back, Boone takes Rush as a hostage. Newman proves himself the bravest of the passengers, systematically and intelligently outwitting the bandits one by one, invoking Leonard's brilliant "white flag" scenario from the novel in the process. Shot on location in Arizona. Cream titled wrappers, noted as REVISED SCREENPLAY on the front wrapper, dated June 29, 1965. Title page present, dated June 29, 1965, noted as Revised Screenplay, with credits for screenwriters Ravetch and Frank. 133 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 131. Mechanically reproduced on eye-rest green stock. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, bound internally with three gold brads. Hardy, The Western, p. 304. Hitt, pp. 233-234, 329. Pitt 1908.

Folio. - Small damage to edges.

EA dieser Ausgabe. (= Yale Publications on the History of Art, Bd. 16). 5100 gr. Schlagworte: Architektur - GeschichteGeschichte - Renaissance [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Naked Lunch

Paris: Olympia Press. (1965). Reprint (originally published in 1959). Printed green wrappers. Modest edgewear, slight tear at base of the spine, very good or better, without dustwrapper. Inscribed by Burroughs to poet and publisher Charles Plymell: "for Codeine Charlie, All the best medications. William S. Burroughs RX."[With]: the program for the Memorial Service held for Burroughs in Lawrence, Kansas in 1997. One leaf folded to make four pages, photo illustration of Burroughs on first page. Fine. Plymell has written a brief poem in the program.[With]: a small business card sized poem (different from the one above) printed by the Bottle of Smoke Press: Cut Praises: At William Burroughs' funeral service Lawrence, KS, Aug. 6, 1997. Fine. Signed by Plymell. One of the most influential novels of the post-WWII era with a notable association. Aside from his own poetry, the Kansas-born Plymell was an early 1960s confident of the Beat Generation. Burroughs praised Plymell thusly: "Plymell has as much to say about death as Hemingway did and a lot more to say about it in terms of the present generation stillborn into a world that can offer nothing." In the foreword to Plymell's Apocalypse Rose Allen Ginsberg described Plymell and his friends inventing the Wichita Vortex, a movement of creativity inspired by Kansas which had nevertheless "... driven a host of prophetic youths out of heartland Kansas." Plymell and his wife later founded Cherry Valley Editions, which published work by Burroughs and many others. Plymell also published Zap Comix #1 in 1968. A significant association. .
