Saroyan, William
San Francisco, 1963. 12 by 18 inches. Signed in full. *** William Saroyan (Armenian American, 1908-1981) was an accomplished modernist writer who won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama (which he declined) and an Academy Award for adapting his book The Human Comedy for the screen (which he didn't show up to get). Saroyan was also a life-long artist who would claim to have explored Abstract Expressionist ideas ahead of Jackson Pollock. *** 'Long before Jackson Pollock, for instance, had begun his magnificent experiments and made his magnificent achievements in painting, I had already been there, I had already made the experiments and had beheld the achievements. I hadn?t made anything of them because writing was my life.' *** Saroyan begain painting in the 1930s and turned to it in earnest in the 1960s and 1970s, painting hundreds of abstract works, one after another, at a sometimes manic pace. The paintings explore ideas about line, gesture, and color. Formed from continuous lines, they have a close relationship to calligraphy, becoming an abstract meditation on the act of writing. *** Saroyan seems to have had little interest in Asian calligraphy, but it is probably not a stretch to say that Saroyan's paintings have some connection to the fluid lines of the Armenian alphabet. *** In addition to Pollack's acknowledged influence, Saroyan's work also resembles Mark Tobey's calligraphic paintings. *** During his lifetime, Saroyan never exhibited or sold his work in galleries, and relatively few paintings are in private hands. This painting comes from a collection formed by the late P … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dickinson, Eleanor; Herndon, Fran; Collins, Jess; La Vigne, Robert; McNeil, William; Weber, W.. Elephant folio, 8 broadsides in a folder, signed by the authors and the artists. The Beat Generation, a principal literary movement within the San Francisco Renaissance, featured many exemplary poets and writers who used their work to explore topics of spirituality, sexual liberation, and a rejection of materialism; the writings of the Beats were an impetus to the hippie and counterculture movements that emerged in the 1960s. This collection of eight broadsides features poems from prominent writers of the 1950s and 1960s, printed for the San Francisco Arts Festival in 1963. The poems vibrate with unique energy, connected through the dynamic arts movement in San Francisco, through an exploration of raw feeling and language. Each poem is accompanied by an illustration by a different artist, and the broadsides are printed by various fine press print shops based in San Francisco, such as the Grabhorn Press and the Auerhahn Press. Poets and artists featured are Allen Ginsberg and Robert La Vigne, Helen Adam and William McNeil, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Eleanor Dickinson, Lew Welch and W. Weber, Philip Whalen, Robert Duncan and Jess Collins, Robin Blaser and Fran Herndon, and Ron Loewinsohn. The broadsides are signed by both the artists and the poets, making this an exceptional collection of work created for the 17th Annual San … [Click Below for Full Description]

O'Connor, Flannery
Milledgeville, GA, 1963. 4 pp. total, autograph letter on Air Mail paper with integral address panel. 4to (approx. 11 x 8-1/2 and smaller). On Wise Blood, Faulkner and Peacocks. A collection of four letters from Flannery O'Connor to the Scandanavian-American artist Clifford Wright (1919-1999). O'Connor met Wright at the Yaddo artist colony in 1948 where she was working on her first novel, Wise Blood, and he was serving as assistant to the director. Wright later settled in Denmark with his wife, the Danish author Elsa Gress. At the time of this correspondence, Wright was living in Åsø, where he and Gress ran an artist retreat, Decenter.A wide-ranging and humorous correspondence, which touches on Wise Blood, Faulkner, Marianne Moore, Kierkegaard, painting, and peacocks. Some excerpts: "I have just had some experience with a translator myself who brought down the translation he had made of Wise Blood (into French) for me to look at ? All his talk was very interesting about his problems translating it. He also translates Faulkner but he said Faulkner's rhythms fit much better into French than mine did. The more concise the harder to put into French he said; and I would have thought it would be the opposite." Wise Blood was translated as La Sagesse dans le Sang by M. E. Coindreau in 1959."The thing to do is when you get them [peacocks], keep them penned up for about ten days, then let them out about dark on the tenth day at the place where you want them to roost. Then they will come back there every night to roost. I dare say they would visit your neighbors meadows. We don't hav … [Click Below for Full Description]

AKHMATOVA, Anna].
Miunkhen T-vo Zarubezhnikh izdaniy, 1963. Small octavo (19.2 x 14.2 cm). 23 pp., including title and a portrait of Akhmatova. Publisher's wrappers. Fine example of the first edition of one of Akhmatova's most famous works.Uncommon, especially in such fresh condition: one of 500 copies only. Written between 1935 and 1940, 'Requiem' was not published in Russia until 1987. Two personal dramas in particular - the arrest and imprisonment of her son for 18 years and of her husband, who would finally die in a camp - inspired the specific content of the work, a sequence of poetry and prose portraying some of the full-fledged horrors endured by Soviet citizens who were wrongly imprisoned, as well as the anguish of their relatives, especially the mothers and wives, those women with whom Akhmatova stood in line outside the prison walls. While Isaiah Berlin had predicted in 1946 that 'Requiem' would never be published in the Soviet Union, it was memorised by the author and a few close friends for fear that writing them down would jeopardise their lives. As stipulated by the publisher, the present edition was received "from Russia and published without the consent of the author", three years before her death. Emblematic denunciation of Stalinist repression and consecutive sufferings, 'Requiem' is considered by many to be Akhmatova's finest work. Seslavinsky, Tamizdat 9. Berrigan, Ted, ed
Lorenz Gude, New York, 1963. Foolscap format, mimeographed on rectos only; stab-stapled. Early number of the little magazine, which was of of primary importance to the formation of the second New York School. Early issues are increasingly uncommon. This issue includes contributions from Berrigan and Sandy Alper, J. Richard White, Ron Padgett, and Joe Brainard. Verso of last page (with Brainard's "Poem" printed on recto) bears a nine-line holograph poem in Ted Berrigan's hand, in three sections, beginning "If your father had a brogue like Brendan Behan," in pencil, and signed above the poem. We can find no record of these lines being published. Some soiling and toning to cover, with a vertical fold line. Last three sheets detached, but present, and collated and complete against Birmingham. The detached pages chipped and soiled. A worn, but complete copy, and with the addition of the Berrigan poem unique. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Kazuo Kenmochi
Kazuo Kenmochi. Narcotic Photographic Document. Tokyo: Inoue Shoten, 1963. First Edition, First Printing. Complete Set including Slipcase and Publisher's card. Measuring approximately 10.5" x 7.5", the book is bound in white cloth covered boards with Japanese titles stamped onto the spine with a photographically illustrated dust jacket. The book is housed in cardboard slipcase with a printed label. The slipcase is in Very Good + condition with some soiling as well as rubs and chips to the label. The dust jacket is in Near Fine condition with surface wear. The book is in Near Fine condition with a very small mark to the front cover. Overall, this is a highly collectible copy of a very rare photobook that appears on the verge of becoming one of the more valuable books in the photobook genre. This is a first edition, first printing of "Narcotic Photographic Document" published by Inoue Shoten, Tokyo in 1963. Although highly regarded by photobook enthusiasts for many years, the book recently received quite a bit of attention for setting a record for the title, $5500 including commission, at the Swann Photographic Auction held at the end of 2009. The book is a penetrating look inside early 60s drug culture in Japan from production, to distribution, addiction and finally incarceration. Photoeye commenting on the book stated, "Kazuo Kenmochi's Narcotic Photographic Document appears alternately as a work of straight documentary on the one hand, and the highly subjective view of an insider, on the other. Some of the imagery will seem familiar to that seen in Larry Clark's Tulsa, whi … [Click Below for Full Description]
