Fowles, John
London: Jonathan Cape, 1963. First edition. Fine/Fine. A Fine copy of the book in like dust jacket. Book with a small bookseller's stamp on the front end paper, dust jacket with the spine possibly faded a touch, but a superior example nonetheless. Fowles' debut novel, The Collector set a new record for "the price that had hitherto been paid for a first novel" (Howard). The haunting story of obsession exists at the bridge between the modern and post-modern movements, playing with references to Shakespeare's The Tempest and shifting in each book to a different character's perspective. As each new character rises as narrator, a new method of storytelling emerges as well, complicating the novel's genre. Fine in Fine dust jacket.

FOWLES John
1963. First edition. 8vo., original rust cloth lettered in gilt, with burgundy top edge, dust jacket by Tom Adams. London, Jonathan Cape. A fine copy in dust jacket of Fowles first novel, a study of an obsessive sociopath, (with more than a hint of the influence of Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'), which was filmed in the 1960s with Terence Stamp as the anti-hero. Tom Adam's dust jacket is very fine, Fowles himself saying 'I have seen dozens more jackets on other editions since and none comes within a mile of the original for beauty and subtle understatement. It is almost as much the book to me now as my own text, inalienable from its memory', Adams himself admitting that it was one of the most important milestones in his career. Wheat, Carl I.
San Francisco: The Institute of Historical Cartography, printed by the Grabhorn Press, Taylor & Taylor, and the James Printing Company, 1963. First and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Each volume being one of 1000 copies, the first edition of the work, folio size, approx. 1720 pp. One of 1,000 sets printed over six years, all designed by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn, published between 1957 and 1963; Volume One was printed by them, Volumes Two through Four by Taylor & Taylor, and Volume Five (Parts I and II) by the James Printing Company. "Majestic" is the word that immediately springs to mind when beholding this scholarly work by Carl Irving Wheat (1892-1966), who remains known to bibliophiles the world over for his work. In addition to an important bibliography on the works of the Gold Rush, as well as several other books, he is perhaps best remembered for this set, which has been called his "milestone work". Mr. Wheat's inspiration for this came with the rediscovery of a copy of the 1847 Fremont map with manuscript emendations by George Gibbs which were from an unknown source, and which showed, in pencil, the travels by western explorer Jedediah Smith. A contemporary book review stated "Carl Wheat's Mapping of the Transmississippi West is a comprehensive and readable cartographic history of the American West. These beautifully printed books present a truly graphic picture of the exploration and peopling of the vast unknown land west of the Mississippi. The author does not merely present a catalog of significant maps of each era but tells the exciting story of the many … [Click Below for Full Description]

King Jr , Martin Luther
New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1963. Early printing of Martin Luther King Jr.'s second book. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Fujie With Best Wishes and Warm Regards Martin Luther King Jr." Very good in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with light rubbing and wear. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed by Dr. King. Strength to Love was Martin Luther King's first volume of sermons, published the same year in which he penned his Letter from a Birmingham Jail, and joined the historic March on Washington and delivered his famous I have a dream speech. The following year he won the Nobel Peace Prize. King notes in the preface: "In these turbulent days of uncertainty the evils of war and of economic and racial injustice threaten the very survival of the human race. Indeed, we live in a day of grave crisis. The sermons in this volume have the present crisis as their background; and they have been selected for this volume because, in one way or another, they deal with the personal and collective problems that the crisis presents.
