Arendt, Hannah
New York City, NY: Viking Press(1963). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 275 pages. Book-length account on subject. One of the greatest books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Hannah Arendt's "Eichmann In Jerusalem: A Report On The Banality of Evil". The single most devastating, original, and influential argument on the problem of absolute evil. Parts of the book originally appeared as a series of (very controversial) essays, in slightly different form, in The New Yorker Magazine. "The authoritative and stunning report on the trial of Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann sparked a flurry of debate upon its publication. A major triumph by an intellectual of singular influence, 'Eichmann In Jerusalem' is as shocking as it is informative: An unflinching look at one of the most unsettling (and unsettled) issues of the twentieth century" (Publisher's blurb). More than fifty years later, the phrase itself, "the banality of evil", has almost become a Pop truism even as the lucid and rigorous thinking behind it remains powerful. Among Jewish and American readers and commentators in particular, it has lost none of its power to anger, upset, and make people weep. Just as she foresaw the origins and rise of totalitarianism in modern times, a phenomenon that confronts us to this day, whether they be from the Left or the Right, Arendt comprehended the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rinucius (Vita); Accio Zucco (ital. Bearb.):
Milano, Edizioni Ristampe Anastatiche, 1963.

BECKETT Samuel
Paris: Les ditions de minuit, 1963. Paris: Les éditions de minuit, 1963. Fine. Les éditions de minuit, Paris 1963, 10x18,5cm, relié. - First edition on ordinary paper. Precious copy inscribed by Beckett to his friend the painter Geer (Van Velde) and his wife Lise. "What to say of the sliding planes, the shimmering contours, the cut-out figures in the fog, the balance that any little thing can break, breaking and re-forming themselves under our very eyes? How to talk about the colors that breathe and pant? Of the swarming stasis? Of this world without weight, without force, without shadow? Here everything moves, swims, fells, comes back, falls apart, re-forms. Everything stops, non-stop. One would say it's the revolt of the internal molecules of a stone a split second before its disintegration. That is literature" (The van Veldes' Art, or the World and the Trousers, in Cahiers d'Art n°11-12, Paris 1945). Beckett here is not talking - despite how it may appear - about his literary oeuvre, but about the paintings of Geer Van Velde, going on to add a few lines later "[Bram] Van Velde paints distance. G[eer] Van Velde paints succession." This elegy, published on the occasion of the double exhibition of the Van Veldes (Geer at Maeght's and Bram at the Galerie Mai) is the first important text on these painters, more or less unknown to the public at the time: "We've only just started spouting nonsense about the Van Velde brothers, and I'm the first. It's an honor." This is also the first critical text written directly in French by a young Irish writer who had not, as yet, publ … [Click Below for Full Description]

Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Boards lightly rubbed and bumped at extremities. A very good copy in the jacket. 48 pages of illustrations from photos. Sir Charles Denis Hamilton was a close friend and colleague of Ian Fleming, a director of Kemsley Newspapers and editor of the Sunday Times. Fleming had written seven James Bond novels when he was approached by Hamilton with a plum journalistic assignment: to take a five-week, all-expenses-paid trip to visit the world's most exciting cities. Fleming's trip took in Hong Kong, Macau and Tokyo, then Honolulu, and back home via the major US cities. The material he gathered for this book also furnished much of the backdrop and research for the five Bond novels and seven short stories that would follow. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Abbas SAHAB (1921-2000).
Lithograph in blue, with attached original illustrated wrappers (Very Good, soft folds), 50 x 80 cm (19.7 x 31.5 inches), 18.5 x 12 cm (closed). Tehran: A. Sahab Geographical & Drafting Institute 1963. A detailed road map of Iran, with a chart of distances between the major Persian cities and an inset relief map, was made in 1963, in the year of the White Revolution, by an Iranian cartographer Abbas Sahab. - This extremely detailed and well made map of Iran was made in 1963 in Tehran and shows different types of roads, borders, air routes and sea routes, pipelines and archeological sites. The chart in the lower corner shows distances between the cities and an in-set map above a relief map. The map still shows the road system in the first year of the White Revolution of 1963, when the Trans-Iranian Railway was expanded, and the main roads connecting Tehran and provincial capitals were asphalted. The White Revolution or The Shah and People Revolution was a series of reforms in Iran made between 1963 and 1978 by Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The reform program included among others a land reform, construction of an expanded road, rail, and air network, and a number of dam and irrigation projects. The Trans-Iranian Railway was expanded, port facilities were improved and the main roads connecting Tehran and provincial capitals were asphalted. The map is folded into decorative wrappers, printed with Persian ornaments. The back lists maps in English and Farsi, published by Abbas Sahab by 1963. The map was made by a Persian cartographer Abbas Sahab, known as the father of the modern … [Click Below for Full Description]

PORTER, Eliot.
San Francisco: Sierra Club,, 1963. Folio. 12 original dye-transfer prints, dry-mounted as issued. With two copies of the title and limitation page (as usual). Housed in a linen portfolio with ties, gilt titles to front panel. A fine copy. First edition, first printing, of this fine suite of colour nature photographs. "As its name implies, the dye transfer process literally involves transferring dyes (cyan, magenta, and yellow) in succession and in careful registration onto a sheet of gelatin-coated paper. Porter remained committed to the dye-transfer process, both before and after the invention of simpler and more commonly used color papers, because it delivered richly colored prints and allowed him to control the exact hues and contrast of each final print" (Eliot Porter Collection Guide, Amon Carter Museum of American Art website). Having pursued colour photography since the 1930s, Porter found his first real publishing success with the Sierra Club, who published his Thoreau-inspired photoessay, In Wildness is the Preservation of the World, in 1962. Porter served as director of the Sierra Club, an early leader in the American conservationist movement, from 1965 to 1971.

Widmungsexemplar - Elias Canetti - Canetti, Elias.
November 1963". Elias Canetti (* 25. Juli 1905 in Russe, Bulgarien - + 14.
