Shakespeare, William; Kokoschka, Oskar (Artist)
London: Ganymed Original Editions Limited, 1963. Kokoschka, Oskar. Limited Edition. No. 265 of 275 (plus four additional lettered copies), Elephant Folio - over 15" tall to 23" tall, signed by artist. King Lear is regarded by many as one of Shakespeare's supreme acheivements, noted for "its probing observations on the nature of human suffering and kinship". George Bernard Shaw opined that "No man will ever write a better tragedy than Lear." (N.B., above info and quotes from Wiki). ***ABOUT THE ARTIST: Oskar Kokoschka (1886 - 1980) was one of the leading exponents of Expressionism. In his early portraits, gesture intensifies the psychological penetration of character; especially powerful among his later works are allegories of the artist's emphatic humanism. His dramas, poems, and prose are significant for their psychological insight and stylistic daring - which perfectly complements the themes of the play. ***DESCRIPTION: Unbound Elephant Folio volume cased in grey cloth clamshell box with blue, grey, and red marbled papers and gilt lettering on the spine (although colophon and prospectus call for all copies to have been issued bound); includes sixteen black-and-white lithographs by Oskar Kokoschka created in 1963, hand set in Fell type and printed at the University Press, Oxford, on handmade Crisbrook paper specially made for this edition by J. Barcham Greene Ltd., the text is based on the "New Shakespeare" published by the Cambridge University Press; 17.75" tall, signed by artist Oskar Kokoschka on limitation page, Limited Edition no. 263 of 275 (plus four additional lett … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lord Byron; Garvey, Eleanor M. and Hofer, Philip (Selected and Introduced by)
[Kentfield, California]: The Allen Press, 1963. Limited Edition. One of 150 copies, oblong folio size, [39] individual leaves, in original shipping box. "A Venetian Story" was written by Lord Byron (1788-1824) during his three romantic years there; originally published in 1818, the story is based on a true narrative told to him by the husband of his secret lover. The twenty-seventh limited edition from The Allen Press, this volume takes the text of Byron's narrative and pairs it with eighteenth-centrury engravings; the engravings, chosen for their especially uncommon and devoted portrayal of the glittering city, come from three rare volumes which lent the views: "Il Gran Teatro di Venezia", published by Domenico Lovisa (about 1720); "Magnificentiores Selectioresque Urbis Venetiarum Prospectus" (1741), drawn and etched by Michele Marieschi; and "Prospectus Magni Canalis Venetiarum" (1742), etched by Antonio Visentini after originals by Canaletto. The plates were reproduced by The Meridian Gravure Company and are the driving force of the book, as the text and images echo each other. The introduction includes a large relief-cut initial designed by Mallette Dean (1907-1975), a muralist and eminent printmaker and illustrator of the San Francisco Bay Area; with a myriad of scholarly, poetic, and artistic voices, this volume is altogether a stunning collaboration and homage to the romance of Venice. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter brown cloth portfolio with boards covered in a Fortuny print cloth of eighteenth-century design, hand-blocked in Venice, purple paste-down endpapers, all edges … [Click Below for Full Description]

GINSBERG, Allen (1926-1997
San Francisco: City Lights, 1963. Single leaf, removed from the book. 6½ x 5 inches. Item #403104 A FINE NOTE MENTIONING MAYAKOVSKY AND FRANK O'HARA, WITH A DRAWING, presented to the British actor, author and filmmaker Herbert Marshall (1906-1991). Beneath the title Ginsberg draws the figure of Buddha's footprint: "Three fish with one head - a sign of Buddhahood incised in giant stone carving of Buddha footprint found under Bo Tree at Bodh Gaya, mythological Indian site of the Buddha's realization" (Ginsberg, quoted in the Collected Poems 1947-1980). He inscribes the title: "For Mr. H. Marshall on Times Square many years after reading his 1945 translation of Mayakovsky given to me by poet Frank O'Hara - Jan 7, 1965." The black stain at the foot of the page may have been added intentionally by Ginsberg. Marshall's compilation, 'Mayakovsky and His Poetry', was first published in London in 1942, and reprinted there in 1945 (the American edition was published four years later). The Russian poet was a great influence on Frank O'Hara, as reflected by Ginsberg in a 1975 lecture at the Naropa Institute: "There's a poem by Frank O'Hara, who taught me Mayakovsky actually, gave me my first book of Mayakovsky, 'A True Account Of Talking To The Sun At Fire Island' [Allen begins] 'The Sun woke me this morning loud/ and clear, saying Hey...' - So you see the shift of tone in 50 years. 'Hey!' - there's a kind of brusque, boisterous Russian familiarity in Mayakovsky, but then, fifty years later in New York City gossip, funniness, faggotry, camp, 'Personism', the same thing as Mayakovsky. Ronald A Lee 1964 1st ed HB
1963. The Definitive Book on The Knibb Family of Clockmakers Antiquarian horologist and expert Leigh Extence says "In the individual clockmakers list there are again the famous books, those which are held in awe and those which are almost impossible to obtain. There may never be enough of `The Knibb Family of Clockmaker's' by Ronald Lee to go around and surely the price of this limited printing will continue to soar. A thousand numbered copies were printed in 1963 and with Knibb clock's themselves being such rarities so is the book...." This is the definitive book on the Knibb family and their beautiful clocks, it is well illustrated and beautifully written. If you own a Knibb clock then this is THE book for you and it is worth trying to acquire a copy at any price - even though copies in good condition fetch extremely high prices. Hand numbered as "39" of One Thousand, by the author, and including a signed letter from RA Lee to the original purchaser, this extremely rare 187 page, 310mm x 240mm x 25mm hardback is in excellent condition throughout, though the dust jacket shows signs of wear (see photos). Any inquiry welcome, though personal inspection & collection recommended (GL15 6DN). [Attributes: First Edition]

ALLEN PRESS. JAMES, Henry. HUGHES-STANTON, Blair.
Kentfield, California: Allen Press, 1963. A Psychological Novel by Henry James. One of only 15 copies with an extra suite of 16 artist's proofs each titled, numbered 9/15 and signed by the artist in a separate portfolio. 16 wood engravings by Blair Hughes-Stanton, all printed in two colours plus one illustration in grey, green, purple, red, blue, olive, blue/green and brown. Text printed in several colours in Romanée types on Arches paper. Folio, original handmade Italian printed paper covered boards with lettering and blocks of all the seven colours used in the printing on the upper cover, spine lettered in green, in the original acetate jacket, plus matching portfolio of the same patterned Italian paper covered boards also in the original acetate jacket. Very mild chipping to the top of the portfolio spine otherwise a very good set. A total of seven colours are used for the 16 outstanding engravings by Hughes-Stanton, and these colours are also used to print the text, being inspired by the seven sections of the book each with a different emotional theme. Whilst illustrating this book Hughes-Stanton was driven by the text and the emotional problems confronting the principal characters: "I feel him blocked by squares or screens, and dominated by his shadow; she is fluid, and her shape is the egg; the Beast lurks in the eye (or ego); and in the second block the line entangles him, or sometimes holds them together; but eventually they break". This shorter story by James is one of his greatest. Clifton Fadiman wrote: "For me this is the best of James's shorter fictions, combi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Single map on two lithographed sheets, sheet size 1470 x 890 mm, lunar diameter 1390 mm. The sheets with a few short kinks, but generally very well preserved. ---- "The USAF Lunar Reference Mosaic (LEM) is a composite photo mosaic of the moon produced from selected photographs taken at Mt. Wilson, McDonald and Pic du Midi Observatories. Sections of twenty-four photographs were chosen which would provide a constant sun angle in order to maintain a uniform portrayal of lunar craters and prominences. This mosaic was compiled to an orthographic projection which shows the moon as a sphere as viewed from an infinite distance. Position was determined through the use of selenographic control established primarily from the measures of Franz and Saunder as compiled in the Orthographic Atlas Of the Moon, edited by G. P. Kuiper in 1960. Each photograph was copied to a common scale and rectified to mean libration in order for it to match or fit adjacent sections." (NASA LPI online resource). "In 1962, LEM-I was recompiled from improved photo imagery and issued at scales of 1: 10,000,000; 1:5,000,000 and 1:2,500,000, the latter in two sheets and titled USAF Lunar Wall Mosaic (LEM-IB). This series of lunar mosaics has been one of the most popular items in the ACIC lunar map inventory. The mosaics have been very much in demand as a wall display and as a base for various indices.
