Kazuo Kenmochi: Narcotic Photographic Document (with slipcase and obi)

Inoue Shoten, Tokyo 1963 - First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Buff cloth-covered boards with title stamped in black on the spine; with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs and text (in Japanese) by Kazuo Kenmochi. 160 pp., profusely illustrated with black-and-white plates. 10-3/8 x 7-1/2 inches. [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume III. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2014)]. Near Fine (bump to crown of spine) in Near Fine dust jacket (moderate rubbing), with original publisher's printed cardboard slipcase and printed obi. Predating the much better well-known work of Larry Clark and Nan Goldin, Kenmochi's books presents a no less gritty and unflinching visual and textual document of the Japanese drug culture in the early 1960s. At times Kenmochi's photographs of people procuring illegal drugs read as ordinary street photography, at other times he presents viewers with dizzying views of the users' increasingly desperate habits. Surveillance-type photographs mimic detective movies, and finally, the narrative concludes with the abject situations of arrest and imprisonment. The remarkably affective book concludes with a lengthy essay accompanied by illustrations, maps, charts, and statistics. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Program for the First Piatigorsky Cup: International Grandmaster Chess Tournament July 2 to 27, 1963

Piatigorsky Cup Committee, Los Angeles 1963 - 48 pages with photographs and diagrams. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's spiral binding in blue felt wrappers with black and silver Piatigorsky Cup stamped to cover. Included 10 first day tickets for the cup. Signed or inscribed by all the contestants. First edition. The Piatigorsky Cup was a triennial series of double round-robin grandmaster chess tournaments held in the United States in the 1960's. Sponsored by the Piatigorsky Foundation, only two events were held, in 1963 and 1966. The Piatigorsky Cups were the strongest U.S. chess tournaments since New York 1927. Jacqueline Piatigorsky (née Rothschild) was married to cellist Gregor Piatigorsky. One of the strongest woman chess players in the U.S. and a regular competitor in the U.S. Women's Chess Championship, she designed the cup and was the primary organizer of the tournament. The prize funds were among the largest of any chess tournament up to that time. Every player was guaranteed a prize and all traveling and living expenses were paid. The First Piatigorsky Cup was held in The Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles in July 1963. The tournament field of eight included players from five countries. The Soviet representatives Paul Keres and World Champion Tigran Petrosian finished equal first to share the cup with a score of 8½/14, receiving more than half of the $10,000 prize fund ($3000 for first). Since dollars brought back to the USSR were exchanged by the Soviet government for rubles at an unfavorable rate, Keres and Petrosian were reported to have bought automobiles (Ramblers) with their winnings. Keres won the most games in the tournament (six), but lost twice to Samuel Reshevsky. The Cup was Petrosian's first tournament since winning the 1963 World Championship match with Mikhail Botvinnik and was one of two first prizes he shared in his six-year reign as champion. He was the first reigning champion to play in an American tournament since Alexander Alekhine at Pasadena 1932. After losing in the second round to Svetozar Gligoric, Petrosian was never in danger the rest of the tournament. The remainder of the tournament field included two Americans, Reshevsky and Pal Benko, two Argentinians, Oscar Panno and Miguel Najdorf, and two Europeans, Gligoric (Yugoslavia) and Fridrik Olafsson (Iceland). U.S. Champion Bobby Fischer declined an invitation after his demand for a $2000 appearance fee was refused by the tournament organizers. Gligoric led halfway through the tournament with 4 1/2/7, but he scored only three draws in the last seven games and finished fifth behind Najdorf and Olafsson. Petrosian finished the strongest, with 5/7 in the second half. Before the last round, Petrosian led with 8 points, followed by Keres with 7 1/2 and Najdorf and Olafsson with 7. Both Petrosian and Keres had Black in the final round. Petrosian drew his game against Reshevsky, but Keres beat Gligoric to result in a tie for first place with 8 1/2 points each. Condition: Spiral spine small split at center else a better than very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Jonathan Cape, London 1963 - First edition of the eleventh Bond novel. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Ian Fleming on the front free endpaper. From the library of Francis Cory-Wright, with a loosely inserted typescript card, signed "Robin" and dated 1 July 1963, by Robin De La Lanne-Mirrlees. Lanne-Mirrlees, Rouge Dragon Pursuivant at the College of Arms, assisted Fleming with research for On Her Majesty's Secret Service, providing heraldic and genealogy information on Bond, and being an inspiration for Bond's cover as a College of Arms researcher in the novel. Lanne-Mirrlees claimed descent from an ancient Basque family, whose members were said to be born without earlobes. Fleming gave this unusual deformity to Blofeld. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. A superior example with noted provenance. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is the eleventh novel in the James Bonds series and the first since the debut of the Bond film. It became "an immediate bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic" (Biondi & Pickard, 48). "By the time of publication, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service had received nearly a quarter more subscriptions than any previous Fleming novel" (Lycett, 419). George Lazenby starred in the 1969 film version, with Diana Rigg as Tracy and Telly Savalas as Blofeld. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The White House Years: Mandate for Change 1953?1956 [and] Waging Peace 1956?1961 [together with] At Ease: Stories I Tell My Friends.

New York: Doubleday,, 1963, 1965, 1967. 3 volumes, thick octavo. Bound in brown morocco for the personal library of publisher Nelson Doubleday, Jr., spines lettered in gilt, raised bands. Housed in individual brown morocco leather-entry slipcases. Excellent condition. First editions of Eisenhower's two volumes of presidential autobiography and his later volume of discursive memoirs. Nelson Doubleday Jr. (1933?2015) was the last president of Doubleday and Company (1978?86) before its sale to Bertelsmann AG in 1986; he was grandson of the founder, Frank Nelson Doubleday ("Effendi"). Doubleday were Eisenhower's publishers throughout. Although Eisenhower had been bombarded with offers from other publishers to write his war memoirs, he only conquered his doubts about doing so after meeting Doubleday in December 1947. Doubleday supplied secretaries, researchers and other support; supervised much of the work; and paid for the creation of maps and photographs for the book. The Doubleday editorial board met with him on several occasions and provided extensive comments on the work in progress. Crusade in Europe (1948) was a huge success and established a working relationship between Eisenhower and his publishers that endured throughout his lifetime.

Bay of Pigs Invasion] Heroes de Giron

La Comision de Orientacion Revolucionaria de la Direccion Nacional del partido Unido de la Revolucion Socialista undated, ca. 1963, [no place given, likely Havana] - Oblong quarto, unpaginated (about 50pp). A good copy in the original pictorial stapled wrappers. Text block partly coming away from the wrappers, which are somewhat foxed and hve general edgewear, but minimal chipping. Some mild internal foxing, but mostly a clean example. This scarce volume honors the fallen men who successfully fought back the Bay of Pigs invasion (a total disaster for the US and the CIA), with gallant, yet modest headshots of each comrade who perished in the fighting, including their age and occupation. It contains an opening epitaph by Fidel Castro. Text in Spanish. OCLC locates four copies - three in the United States and one in the National Library of China. A really wonderful example of a propaganda document, dating from the first few years of Castro's reign, when he was being tested by both the United States and the weight of his own revolution.         IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD / ART BY JACK DAVIS (1963)

United Artists 1963 - Vintage original 41 x 27" (103 x 68 cm.) one sheet poster style A, pictorial style, USA. Spencer Tracy, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Buddy Hackett, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Dick Shawn, Phil Silvers, Terry-Thomas, Edie Adams, Dorothy Provine, dir: Stanley Kramer; United Artists. The crazy classic comedy involving an insane car chase to find the location of buried money. Many of the comedy greats of Hollywood were cast, and many, who were not, wanted to be, so they played cameos (including The Three Stooges, Jimmy Durante, Jerry Lewis and Buster Keaton). The couple which Sid Caesar and Edie Adams play originally was set for Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. The mishaps, stories and legends about the making of the film are enough to fill a volume. It was a huge money maker. There were many Academy Award nominations in the category of sound, music and cinematography. The style A poster features the work of artist Jack Davis. Poster is folded. It has staple and pinholes at the at all four corners. The fold junctures and fold bottom have been re-enforced on the verso with archival tape. NEAR FINE

BEATLES, THE / DAILY EXPRESS - READ GEORGE'S COLUMN EVERY WEEK (1963)

1963 - Vintage orginal 29 ¾ x 19 ½" (76 x 49 cm.) poster, UK. "Derek Taylor was a national journalist when he was assigned to write a review of a Beatles concert. He had been expected by his editors to write a piece critical of what at that time was considered by the national press as an inconsequential teen fad. However, he was enchanted by the group and instead sang their praises. Shortly afterwards, he was invited to meet The Beatles and soon became a trusted journalist in their circle. "As The Beatles gained national attention in Britain, Taylor's editors conceived of running a column ostensibly written by a Beatle to boost circulation, to be ghostwritten by Taylor. George Harrison was the Beatle eventually decided upon. Although Taylor was initially only given the right to approve or disapprove of the content, Harrison's dissection of the first draft turned the column into an ongoing collaboration between the two, with Harrison providing the stories and Taylor providing the polish." (Wikipedia) This is a genuinely very-rare poster, with its imagery of The Beatles when still quite young and at the moment when their stars were beginning to ascend. On linen, with very minor slight touch-ups, there is one small marginal area of blank linen which is lightly bent, NEAR FINE

        Paris Mortel. VERY FINE COPY.

(Hilversum), (C. de Boer Jr.), (1963). Cloth-covered boards, cloth-effect dust-jacket (hardcover), 22 x 28,7 cms., (68) pp. with 65 fine photographs in gravure, bound as a blockbook. Top and spine of dustjacket show (very) slight discoloring, but altogether a very fine copy, hardly to be seen in this condition. Johan van der Keuken (1938-2001) moved from Amsterdam to Paris in 1956 to study at the School of Film. He was confronted there with life and man's loneliness. Van der Keuken took thousands of photographs, the city acting as a background to his feelings of desolation. In 1963 a selection of these registrations were published in a book called "Paris mortel", a title that reflects the gloomy undertone of the contents of the book. In this book, Van der Keuken attempted to reflect the complexity of the city. The Photos in this book were taken between October 1956 and August 1958. Layout: Marinus H. van Raalte. Hasselblad: 190 - Parr/Badger: 248. Keuken, Johab van der.

        JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS (1963)

Columbia Pictures 1963 - Vintage original 29 ¼ x 39 ½" (74 x 100 cm.) quad poster, UK. Todd Armstrong, Nancy Kovack, dir: Don Chaffey; Columbia. This film was a co-production of the US and the UK, so this poster is from one of its two countries of origin. With the unique special effects of Ray Harryhausen, and the memorable score of Bernard Herrmann, this has always qualified as one of the classic fantasy films. However, this British poster, with its very distinctive artwork, is a rare piece. And although the British quad poster is normally 30 x 40" (75 x 10"0 cm.), this poster gives every appearance of having been printed in this slightly eccentric format. Only two other copies of this poster have turned up in recent times -- both in far inferior condition to this, and both also measuring the same as this one. Folded, with various creases and scattered pinholes, colors are bright, VERY GOOD-.
