FUCK YOU: A Magazine of the Arts - Number 5, Volume 4 (Summer 1963)

      - New York: Fuck You Press, [1963]. 4to.; Side-stapled mimeo wraps with illustrations on colored pages; lightly sunned edges; mild edge wear and light soiling, else near fine. Signed by Sanders on back cover. Cover art by Sanders. Sanders typed this issue in the quarters of The Living Theater in NYC, using the group’s typewriter- type stencils. Printed specifically to distribute at the Great March on Washington, August 1963 . [Sanders 48]. This is the issue that two years later would cause the raid on Peace Eye Bookstore. In the "Notes to Contributors," Sanders announces (admittedly straying from reality) that he had the first fifty-three hieroglyphs of Akh-en-Aten’s "Hymn to the Sun Disc" tattooed on his private parts. [Sanders 49]. It was this comment that offended the raiding officer. Provocative lines such as "We Must Fuck One Another or Die!" and "Grope for Peace" are common throughout the magazine.Contributors included Sanders, Tuli Kupferberg (also of the Fugs), Carol Berge, John Wieners, Andy Warhol, Ray Bremser, Lenore Kandel, Charles Olson, Joel Oppenheimer, Peter Orlovsky, Philip Whalen, Allen Ginsberg, Herbert Huncke, Julian Beck, Frank O'Hara, Leroi Jones, Diane DiPrima, William Burroughs, Gay Snyder, Robert Kelly, Judith Malina, Carl Solomon, Gregory Corso, Robert Duncan, Robert Creeley, Michael McClure, Ted Berrigan, Joe Brainard, Gilbert Sorrentino, and many others - the "A" list of avant garde poetry in the '60s.         Marc Chagall-The Revolution-1963 Mourlot Lithograph

1963 - "The Revolution" by Marc Chagall, Unsigned Lithograph printed in 1963 from an edition size of 3000. The overall size of the Lithograph is 30 x 20 inches. The condition of this piece has been graded as A-: Near Mint, very light signs of handling. Here is some supplemental information about the Lithograph: Poster created for the annual exhibition, "Painters, witness of their time", at the Galliera Museum, Paris. The lithograph was issued from a detail of a preparatory study for the 1937 picture "The Revolution". It is, as so often with Chagall, crowded with his childhood memories, religion and of course, the Russian revolution.       Arkham House, Sauk City, Wisconsin 1963 - Duodecimo, 19.4 x 13.4 cm; [7], viii, [3], 4-284, [4] pp. 2000 copies printed. This book is so close to appearing new and untouched that it is mouth-watering. However, its minuscule faults are as follows: tiny bumps at the head and tail of the spine have caused the slightest of creasing to the dust jacket (and does not affect the binding), and there is a bit of scattered scuffing to about an inch of the dust jacket along the front edge at the spine. The new-like condition of the binding, boards and pages is absolutely astounding. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        C: A Journal of Poetry. Whole numbers 1 (May 1963) and 2 (June 1963)

Lorenz Gude/Ted Berrigan 1963 - Side-stapled tall (legal-sized) mimeographed wrappers. The first two issues of thirteen published (there was no number 12) of one of the most important mimeo magazines of the 1960s, and a crucial link between the first and second generations of the New York School poets. Richard Hell called C "the greatest literary magazine of the twentieth century. you could extrapolate everything worthwhile in the universe from its thirteen issues, and you'd have a great time, giggling." Originally a vehicle for the Tulsa core of Berrigan, Ron Padgett, Dick Gallup and Joe Brainard, the journal also published John Ashbery, Barbara Guest, Frank O'Hara, Kenneth Koch and many others. Always a fragile publication, carelessly assembled to begin with, when found issues of C are usually not in great shape and issues can vary from copy to copy depending on who was manning the stapler at the time. These copies were collated against Jed Birmingham's realitystudio C Press Index. Condition notes follow. Number 1: edges worn, last two sheets detached and third from last almost detached, collates complete. Number 2: some stains and soiling to covers, stapled twice (total of six staples), last sheet detached, one poem ("Sally") not present compared to Birmingham. All issues of C are fairly uncommon, these first two are quite rare. Clay & Phillips, pp. 160-65. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Japan--a chapter of image

1963. First Edition . Signed. SMITH, W. Eugene. JapanÂ… a Chapter of Image. (Tokyo: Toppan Printing Co., 1963). Large quarto, original blue paper boards. $3000.First edition of this photographic essay on JapanÂ’s industrialization, inscribed by W. Eugene Smith on the title page: “To Jim, Well, here this one is—all crept over with errors and faults, and a few passable things, IÂ’m learning.—Gene.”From 1961-1962, W. Eugene Smith worked for Hitachi Corporation in Japan, ostensibly to document the companyÂ’s activities. Instead, Smith created this photo essay that emphasizes the impact of rapid industrialization on Japanese laborers. This was SmithÂ’s first exposure to the theme that he would build upon 10 years later in his poignant work about mercury poisoning in Minamata, Japan. In this essay, Smith includes for the first time the phrase that would later become closely identified with his work and artistic philosophy, and was chosen as the title of the famous 1970 retrospective of his photographs: “Let truth be the prejudice.” Only very slight sunning and minor wear to extremities of boards, small tape repair to front board. Photographs lovely and fine. An extremely good copy.

        The Craft of Intelligence.

New York: Harper & Row,, 1963. Octavo. Original black quarter cloth, spine lettered in gilt, grey cloth sides, publisher's device gilt to front board, fore edge untrimmed. 4 photographic plates. Spine sunned, uneven fading to black cloth on rear board, edges toned. A very good copy. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author "To Gen Sir Kenneth Strong, as a reminder of our works together, with the sincere regards of the author, Allen W. Dulles Xmas 1963" on the front free endpaper. A magnificent association copy, linking two of the most influential figures in military intelligence during the Second World War and after. At the start of the Second World War Dulles was recruited to run the Swiss desk of the Office of Strategic Services, precursor to the CIA, to which Eisenhower appointed him director in 1953, making him the first civilian to hold that position. His extravagant career ended with the Bay of Pigs debacle in 1961, though he remains the longest-serving Director of Central Intelligence. Kenneth Strong was appointed Eisenhower's chief of intelligence in 1943, and became his "firm friend and confidant" (ODNB), helping plan the Allied landings in Sicily, D-Day, and the final German surrender. After the war he became director-general of the political intelligence department at the Foreign Office, and later at the Ministry of Defence following reorganisation in 1964, retiring two years later. Harry Rositzke, Dulles's colleague at the OSS, later remarked: "When the whole thing was over, I had a chat with the British General Strong, who was Ike's chief of G-2, and he said he thought our tracking of just those two SS divisions in the south of France, the Das Reich and the Lehr, and the way they were slowed down getting to the Normandy beachhead saved at least 10,000 lives. That alone, to my mind, paid for the entire OSS operation around the world" (cited after Srodes, Allen Dulles: Master of Spies, p. 365).

Renegade Press, Cleveland 1963 - First Printing, one of 100 numbered copies, this being copy no.89. Slim octavo (21.5cm); orange letterpressed wrappers, saddle-stitched; [32]pp. Signature of Lewis Putnam Turco, a Cleveland Formalist poet, to verso of front wrapper, with his embossed library stamp to lower corner of colophon. Some fibrous residue along spine-fold, else bright and clean throughout; Very Good+. In February 1963, levy purchased a used letterhead hand-press, found by his brother Jim, and begins printed poetry under the Renegade Press imprint from his aunt and uncle's house in Cleveland. The first three Renegade Press titles were comprised of levy's own poetry, and were largely destroyed by him, with very few copies extant. The fourth publication (March, 1963) was a slim volume of poems by George Robert Beck - a friend of levy's and for a time, a detective and deputy sheriff in the Cleveland Police Department. Certainly a curious friendship, given levy's protracted dealings with the Cleveland PD. Scarce; OCLC notes 7 holdings (Yale, Emory, Northwestern, Michigan State, Cleveland Public, Kent State, Ohioana Library Association). Taylor & Horvath P-04. [Attributes: First Edition]
