        30th anniversary

Kobe: Nomura Shoji Kabushiki Kaisha, 1963. Large 8vo, (approx. 10½" x 7½), pp. 36; with 13 tipped-in silver prints (9 of them showing lumbering operations), and 12 color half-tones of wood samples; original orange cloth-covered boards lettered in white and gilt on upper cover; a touch of fading to the top of the front cover, one page loosening; all else very good. Prepared for the Nomura firm's 30th anniversary, containing much information on this lumber importer which was the sole Japanese company licensed to sell wood from the British Borneo Timber Company. The original photographs include portraits of the founding and current presidents of Nomura, and a 2-part aerial view of its coastal facility and lumbering operations. The text features letters of congratulations from other companies, a history of Nomura, and a few graphs and charts tracking the quantity of its annual imports, all printed on a flecked Japanese paper. The last section features descriptions of 12 types of Borneo wood with tipped-in reproductions of cross-sections, which convincingly look very much like actual slivers of wood.

        Where The Wild Things Are

[New York]: Harper and Row 1963 - Illustrated by the author. First edition, first printing, with the Library of Congress number 63-21253; in a first issue dust jacket, priced $3.50, with no mention of the Caldecott award, with codes 40-80 and 1163, three blurbs each to the front and back panels. Inscribed by Sendak to book designer Janet Anderson on the half-title: "For Janet Anderson / Maurice Sendak / 4/15/82". Publisher's pictorial white boards and gray cloth, illustrated with Sendak's wraparound drawing of a wild thing, his habitat, and Max's boat, lettered in black, pictorial endpapers; original pictorial dust jacket illustrated after the binding. Near fine, with some minor wear from a removed bookplate to the front pastedown, bright boards, clean pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some light toning to the spine and panel edges, a few minor nicks to the spine ends, short closed tear to the top edge of the front panel (not affecting the title lettering), a few faint smudges to the otherwise bright panels. Overall, a very attractive and clean copy, with the Newcomb Hall Bookstore of University of Virginia's autograph slip laid in. Hanrahan A58. The winner of the 1964 Caldecott Medal, Where the Wild Things Are is Maurice Sendak's iconic children's book about a young boy who is sent to bed without supper and imagines himself in a fantasy jungle world where he is the king of the ferocious "wild things." A very personal book, the story is based on Sendak's childhood; the idea of "wild things" came from the Yiddish term "vilde chaya" or "wild animal" that was popular with his mother, the wild things themselves were based on his aunts and uncles, and the experience of being sent to bed without supper for being a "vilde chaya" was one that Sendak knew well. Although the book was initially criticized for its dark undertones, Sendak's keen ability to connect with the emotions and dreams experienced by children worldwide, paired with his exquisite illustrations, make this book a timeless classic. OHLdr. 28 x 19,5 cm. Yudlov 2053. - Zur Neuausgabe von 1963 schrieb Cecil Roth im Vorwort: "The superb medieval codex known as the Sarajevo Haggadah is certainly the most famous of Hebrew illuminated manuscripts: it is among the most beautiful: it is perhaps the most important. Its recorded history goes back only some seventy years. One day in 1894......a child in Sarajevo came to the Jewish communal infant-school bearing an old Hebrew service book under his arm. His father had recently died leaving the family in straitened circumstances and they needed to realise what was possible from the sale of the volume ...... it passed to the Bosnian National Museum. The discovery soon attracted the attention of the eminent scholars and art-historians of Vienna. ........A ..... magnifient publication was issued before long, devoted to the description and consideration of this newly-found treasure. This was the product of collaboration between the Jewish liturgical expert Heinrich Muller and the non-Jewish art-historian Julius von Schlosser, their own work being supplemented by a most impoprtant excursus on medieval Jewish illuminated manuscripts generally, by the Budapest scholar-collector David Kaufmann, the only person who had hitherto studied the subject systematically". (Cecil Roth bezieht sich auf die hier vorliegende Ausgabe). - Mit Exlibris des Schweizer Altorientalisten Karl Marti (1855-1925). - Einbandkanten etwas bestoßen, Lederrücken etwas beschabt.         Cuba and the United States

New York: International Review Service. Very Good. 1963. Paperback. Blue card covers show some general wear, light soil and some creasing, extending to back pages ; Tight solid books. These publications are bound together with a ribbon like material ; 163 pages; Both volumes of the Cuba and the United States series are included; Cuba and the United States; Vol. 1 Record of Revolution, USSR-China, UN and OAS Action (published in 1960) Vol. 2 Bay of Pigs, October Crisis, Khrushchev-Kennedy, UN, OAS Action. These books appear to be sponsored by the United Nations. Volume one, published in 1960, is an analysis of the rise of Fidel Castro and his followers, the reactions of the Organization of American States, the legal repercussions with regard to the Monroe Doctrine and the relations with the Latin American countries as well as the US embargo on exports to Cuba, which exists to this day. Volume 2 contains a brief analysis of the events and repercussions in Volume one and expands to include the events through to mid-1963. In that period the US, under John F. Kennedy, attempted to depose Castro as evidenced by the disastrous 'Bay of Pigs' attack. Later, the whole world held its breath, fearing a nuclear war between the US and the USSR when the US navy was instructed to blockade Cuba after evidence of a buildup of Russian nuclear weapons became evident to the US intelligence services. The 'October Crisis' which pitted JFK against Krushchev in a battle of wits is analysed as well as the actions of the UN and other countries which sided with Cuba. Also present are communications between the interested parties - JFK, Krushchev and U Thant, Secretary General of the United Nations . These books are scarce, available in libraries but none appear for sale in the major databases. .

Gutter Girls [The Yellow Teddybears; The Yellow Golliwog] (Original screenplay, director Robert Hartford-Davis' working copy)

Tekli Film Productions / Animated Motion Pictures, London 1963 - Final shooting script for the 1963 film, "The Yellow Teddybears," here under both that title and the film's working title, "The Yellow Golliwog," and released in the US as "Gutter Girls." Directed by Robert Hartford-Davis and written for the screen by Donald and Derek Ford. Director Robert Hartford-Davis' working copy, with his holograph ink and penciled notations, deletions, and drawings throughout. Though instantly packaged at the time (and indeed, today) as a sexy exploitation film, "The Yellow Teddybears" is very much a pre-"Swinging London" message picture, about a group of girls at a girls' boarding school who wear a small yellow teddy bear on their lapels to indicate they have lost their virginity. Red titled wrappers with title window, single call sheet dated April 5, 1963, both in a custom green cloth spring back binder with the director's initials ("RHD"), the film's final title ("The Yellow Teddybears") and the production company ("Tekli Film Productions Ltd") embossed in yellow on the front board. Title page present, with credits for screenwriters Donald and Derek Ford, the two production companies (Tekli and Animated Motion Pictures), noted as FINAL, and dated February 1963. 85 leaves, mimeograph, with pink and goldenrod revision pages throughout. Pages and wrapper Very Good plus, bound with three silver brads. Binder Near Fine. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The Lord of the Rings - Original 1963 UK Deluxe Set, with Original Pauline Baynes Triptych Slipcase

London: Allen & Unwin, 1963. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket, as Issued. J.R.R. Tolkien. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. The true 1st Edition, Allen and Unwin 1963 Deluxe Edition of the 3 volumes of the Lord of the Rings, comprised of "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King". This set is bound in the original Black Buckram cloth with gilt titles, author and publisher to the spines of each volume. The gilt is still bright, without any rubs or tarnishing. Each volume features Bevel-Edged boards, gilded page edges, with an original silk bookmark sewn in. The books are in Near Fine condition, with almost no marks or rubbing to the gilded edges, no writing or inscriptions in any of the books. The textblocks are clean and unmarked, with a very tight binding. The spines of the books are all a black color, the Two Towers a bit lighter in color, a common fault with these sets. The books are housed in the very scarce original publishers slipcase featuring the Pauline Baynes color "Triptych" artwork. This case has a couple of bumps to the corners, and a little rubbing to the edges, no color loss to speak of. Clean and bright, without any corner splits, a lovely case that fits snuggly around the books. One of the nicest sets overall I've run across in years. The scarcest of all the original Allen & Unwin 1st Editions, as well as the Houghton Mifflin issues. According to publishers records, 1000 or less sets were produced. Briefly mentioned in the Tolkien bibliography by Hammond and Anderson on page 98. The outside of the slipcase show some superficial rubbing, but is whole & complete, without any major stains or faults. A rare opportunity for this scarce set and the orignal publishers slipcase illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Digital images available upon request. Other Tolkien sets, original and rebound are available. Inquire if interested. A wonderful addition to anyone's Tolkien collection. Near Fine / No Jacket, as Issued.

London, England: MacGibbon and Kee Limited, 1963. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good+. 304 pp. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Signed by the author Doris Lessing on the title page. Signed by previous owners "Ruth and Joe Slovo" on the front free endpaper. Small Vanguard Booksellers sticker on inside front cover. Vanguard Booksellers was a landmark radical bookstore in Johannesburg run by Trotskyite intellectual Fanny Klenerman from the 1927 until the mid-1970's. During the early 1960's, it was the lively creative hub for political thinkers, activists and writers. It is likely where Ruth First and Joe purchased this copy. Original blue covers with gilt lettering on spine are vibrant and clean with bumping to spine extremities and corners. Surface and edgewear to dust jacket with a closed tear. Dust jacket in protective cover. Ruth First (1925-1982) was an anti-apartheid activist, writer and scholar who was murdered due to her political views and actions. Her husband Joe Slovo (1926-1995) was an anti-apartheid activist, lawyer and a leader in South African revolutionary politics for over four decades. Nobel prizewinning author Doris Lessing (1919- 2013) was raised in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and lived in Cape Town in 1949 working as a journalist and writer. Many of her most important short stories and novels were situated in Africa. Like the Slovos, Doris Lessing was an innovative radical thinker and opposed apartheid. Files released in 2015 revealed that Britain's MI5 spied on Lessing for over two decades due to her early membership with the British Communist Party and sympathy with left-wing writers and activists. Doris Lessing and Ruth First also both shared a literary agent. An early signed first edition by one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century and an outstanding provenance. Offered for sale by Come By Chance Books- a small, family-run bookshop in beautiful Niagara on the Lake.

[Manuscript]: Andy Griffith: Tarheel in Transition

, [1963]. [1963]. Typed manuscript. Ten quarto leaves, typed on rectos only. Probably a carbon, but we are not completely certain. Marked "Raw Copy" in pencil on first leaf. Very heavily edited, presumably by the author, as extensive changes have been made in the text, including some cutting-and-pasting. A biographical article about Griffith by Don Freeman, entertainment editor of The San Diego Union. This appeared as one of the featured articles in the January 25th, 1964 issue of The Saturday Evening Post under the title "I think I'm Gaining on Myself." It details Griffith's North Carolina upbringing, and his uneasy transition to Hollywood. At the time of the article, Griffith, who was born in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, was one of America's most popular television actors, nearing the middle of his nine-year run as Sheriff Andy Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show, set in idyllic Mayberry, N.C. .
