        The Favourite Game.

1963 - Secker & Warburg. 1963. 8vo. Original cloth and dustwrapper; pp. 222; some spotting to top edge, bump to bottom edge, rubbed corners, wrapper is age-toned with some scuffing, ottherwise very good. Provenance: with original poem in Cohen's handwriting to ffep, with ownership inscription of Sharon Brown. The three-verse is inscribed "For Sharon" and shares a tone of romantic regret with famous lyrics such as "Bird on a wire": "leaving me a leaf of hair to plant in the corner of my sleep/and a car ride through the highways ruins taking an old fresh field with me, like a scrap of paper caught on the aerial/ and delivering me to where I began, waiting for the harvest with fish nets and spider webs and empty pockets white and proud as sails." First edition of Cohen's first novel. Originally twice the length and entitled Beauty at Close Quarters, the book was rejected by Cohen's Canadian publishers and was first published in London in its present form four years after he wrote it. sold with The Spice-Box of Earth. Toronto/Montreal: McClelland and Stewart,1961. 8vo. Stiff paper wraps; pp. 88; some scuffing to extremities, a few creases to covers, ink spot to top edges, binding very tight, very good. Provenance: ffep signed and inscribed by Cohen "To Sharon", and with ownership signature of Sharon Brown. First edition. Cohen's second book of poetry was greeted enthusiastically, with the critic Robert Weaver proclaiming him 'probably the best young poet in English Canada right now'. also with Four different photographic images, plus an image of 10 negatives: some multiples, printed in different exposures and crops, for a total of 11 sheets. These show Cohen, playing guitar, singing, mid-conversation, and with friends. These photos are apparently unpublished and are very informal and relaxed. They appear to be from a slightly later period than the books, circa 1970. Nothing is known about Sharon Brown, but it is natural to conjecture that this collection is the memento mori of an affair with the notoriously philandering poet and songwriter. Perhaps one of the women in the photographs is Sharon herself. Cohen left a long string of broken hearts behind him, and the poem in The Favourite Game certainly has the air of a thinly veiled goodbye. He was also famously tight-lipped about the many women in his life. As he once said: "I never discuss my mistresses or my tailors." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Three Notebooks of Sketches and Plans for Installations, with related material

1963 - Three composition books. Small quartos. Modest wear, mostly near fine. Heavily illustrated by the artist Ben Talbert, one of the most important artists in the Los Angeles circle that revolved around Wallace Berman and his publication *Semina*. Berman and his circle were at the forefront of avant-garde cultural and artistic experimentation on the West Coast, in effect, the western equivalent of Andy Warhol and his Factory workers, with sensibilities representing the Beat and early counterculture movements. These notebooks are from Talbert's most important period, and the most important period for his circle, when he was directly influenced by and collaborating with Berman, and most of the artworks presage Talbert's most cherished and representative themes -- nudes, intense sexuality, S&M scenes, and handwritten and illustrated plans for installations, assemblages, collages, or sculpture. Several drawings and plans are initialed and dated, although most are not, as normal for sketchbooks.Related material laid in include several nude and mildly sexual photographs of Talbert and a woman named Gayle, presumably his wife or girlfriend, used by them as Christmas Greetings, other clothed photographs of the couple, a handmade Valentine from Gayle to Talbert, several vintage color photographs of Talbert's framed work, a couple of different invitations to memorial retrospectives of his works (after his death in 1975 from a drug overdose at the age of 42), and several additional drawings by Talbert on a variety of different sizes of paper. The sketches, ranging from fully detailed drawings to impressionistic nudes, are executed in a variety of media: pencil, pen and ink, marker, gouache, colored pencil, watercolor, and a few in ball-point pen. There are 69 pages of reasonably fully executed drawings bound in, plus an additional five laid in, for a total of 74 pages of drawings. There are 21 pages of handwritten and illustrated plans for installations, plus another two laid in for a total of 23 pages. There are about 14 pages of drawing exercises bound in, where Talbert attempted to draw every conceivable object (often more than a dozen objects to a page). There is one additional drawing mounted and used as a greeting card that we are reasonably certain is by Talbert, as it is similar to his style and preferred subject matter (a spurting penis), but whose inscription: "Sam -- Luv, Tony" gives us pause. While the drawings are appealing and interesting, the plans for Pop installations, assemblages, and sculptures are fascinating, especially considering the time in which they were conceived. They include chastity-belts shaped and illustrated as police badges, and many variations on altered televisions, mostly with sexual twists and innuendos.Talbert's work was the subject of a retrospective exhibit at the Andrew Roth Gallery in New York in March of 2007. This is previously unrecorded material, representing vital and important work for an overlooked but important artist in the most interesting period of his career. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Manuscript]: Andy Griffith: Tarheel in Transition

[1963]. Typed manuscript. Ten quarto leaves, typed on rectos only. Probably a carbon, but we are not completely certain. Marked "Raw Copy" in pencil on first leaf. Very heavily edited, presumably by the author, as extensive changes have been made in the text, including some cutting-and-pasting. A biographical article about Griffith by Don Freeman, entertainment editor of The San Diego Union. This appeared as one of the featured articles in the January 25th, 1964 issue of The Saturday Evening Post under the title "I think I'm Gaining on Myself." It details Griffith's North Carolina upbringing, and his uneasy transition to Hollywood. At the time of the article, Griffith, who was born in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, was one of America's most popular television actors, nearing the middle of his nine-year run as Sheriff Andy Taylor on The Andy Griffith Show, set in idyllic Mayberry, N.C. .

        Water Yam Fluxus No. C

No Place (Germany): George Brecht, No Date (1963). First edition. Loose Sheets. Very Good +. Artist "book" in a box created by George Brecht with outer design label by George Maciunas and typeset by Tomas Schmit. Two piece cardboard box with laminated paper wrapper housing 78 "event-scores" or "flux-scores" printed on various size cards. Also includes 3 cards from the famous European Fluxshop, the international mail-order arm of the Fluxus Group. The box, sometimes refered to as a Fluxbox or Fluxkit contains a large number of small printed cards containing instructions which could be performed in public or private and are meant to be open-ended leaving a wide degree for chance and imagination and interpretation to take place. Although reprinted several times in several sizes and shapes and using different materials, this first edition is one of the essential fluxus objects of the period. Although not dated, the first edition was published in Germany circa 1963. Now considered one of the most influential artworks released by the international avant-garde art movement known as Fluxus. Although it is always difficult to know when one of the flux boxes is complete due to the ephemeral nature of their design it is useful to note that the copy held in the Fondazione Bonotto Fluxus collection also includes the same number of "flux-scores". Even their copy lacks the additional European Fluxshop cards. Condition is quite high. The cards are all in fine condition. The box and paper wrapper showing only very light handling wear.

        A Wrinkle In Time

The First UK Printing published by Constable Young Books (London) in 1963. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Light toning to the text block and a little offsetting to the end papers. A neat previous owner's name to the upper front end paper. A sharp copy. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. Mild edge-wear with a little loss at the spine and flap fold ends. A 5 cm closed tear to the upper rear flap fold area. Some toning to the spine and edges. Some offsetting of the red boards to the verso but this does not show through to the front. A little light spotting in places and light rubbing to the folds. The wraparound dustjacket art by Anthony Maitland is notably different than that of the American edition, showing the three principal characters, Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin tessering with Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which, and Mrs. Whatsit.         Manuscript]: Andy Griffith: Tarheel in Transition

1963 - Typed manuscript. Ten quarto leaves, typed on rectos only. Probably a carbon, but we are not completely certain. Marked "Raw Copy" in pencil on first leaf. Very heavily edited, presumably by the author, as extensive changes have been made in the text, including some cutting-and-pasting. A biographical article about Griffith by Don Freeman, entertainment editor of *The San Diego Union*. This appeared as one of the featured articles in the January 25th, 1964 issue of *The Saturday Evening Post* under the title "I think I'm Gaining on Myself." It details Griffith's North Carolina upbringing, and his uneasy transition to Hollywood. At the time of the article, Griffith, who was born in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, was one of America's most popular television actors, nearing the middle of his nine-year run as Sheriff Andy Taylor on *The Andy Griffith Show*, set in idyllic Mayberry, N.C.

        Dr. Seuss's ABC

Random House, 1963 A fine early printing inscribed by Dr. Seuss. Inscribed to Jonathan Cott who interviewed Dr. Seuss twice for a book he was writing. The book, entitled Pipers at the Gates of Dawn, was about Seuss and five other creators of children's literature, including Maurice Sendak. Cover by Roy Krenkel, interior art by Al Williamson and Larry Ivie. This fanzine was published shortly after Lupoff became editor of Canaveral Press.
