The Making of the English Working Class

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd,, 1963. Octavo. Original blue boards, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Spine rolled, ends and corners lightly bumped, a bright and fresh copy in the slightly chipped dust jacket, spine and front panel browned, a few small cuts to spine joints. First edition, first impression. Thompson "felt that he had much to learn from the life experiences of his working-class students. The whole tone of his most celebrated work, The Making of the English Working Class (1963), which made his reputation, testifies to this. It was fittingly dedicated to one of these students, and for all its international success it is impossible not to sense that the audience he felt himself to be addressing was a wider one than that of the academy" (ODNB).

Holograph Letter by Lee Harvey Oswald written to Gus Hall

circa 1962–1963 - Membership Request to Join the Communist Party USA (J.F.K. Assassin). Holograph Letter by LEE HARVEY OSWALD written to Gus Hall, General Secretary of the Communist Party USA, requesting membership. Undated but addressed using his infamous post office box in Dallas Texas that had been used to purchase his mail-order rifle, rented from 9 October 1962 to May 14, 1963 (Warren Commission Exhibit 1160). 8vo (measuring 8 x 5 inches), 98 words entirely in Oswald's hand, most likely written February or March 1963: “to: Mr. Gus Hall Mrs. E. G. Flynn c/o Box 28 Madison Sq. Station New York 10, N.Y. Dear Sirs, I have followed the activities of the C.P. for the last few years, and have decided that it is very timely and correct for me at this time, to apply for membership in the Communist party of the U.S. I wish to become a member so that I may share, as fully as is possible, your trails [i.e. trials] and tribulations, as well as your glories and victories. Very Sincerely Lee H Oswald P. O. Box 2915 Dallas, Texas” GUS HALL (1910-2000) was recruited by his parents into the Communist Party USA in 1927 and helped organize the Young Communist League in the Midwest. In 1959 he was elected CPUSA general secretary and ran four times as presidential candidate on behalf of his party: in 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984, the last two times with Angela Davis as his running mate. ELIZABETH GURLEY FLYNN (1880-1964) was a labor leader, activist, and feminist who played a leading role in the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). She was also a founding member of the American Civil Liberties Union and a visible proponent of women's rights, birth control, and women's suffrage. She joined the Communist Party USA in 1936 and in 1961 she became its chairwoman; her death during a visit to the Soviet Union was accorded a state funeral in Red Square. During the early 1960s the Communist Party USA had about ten thousand members, of which fifteen hundred were believed to be American government agents infiltrating the organization. When Oswald's letter was received, with its sloppy handwriting and misspellings, it was thought to be from another American agent so the letter was simply unanswered and put on file. When Oswald was identified as JFK's assassin, Gus Hall confirmed that was the name of the person who had written him and became greatly concerned that if such a letter was known, the president's death might be considered a Communist conspiracy so for fifty years this letter was "buried", even unknown to the Warren Commission. It was only after a half-century that Hall's children decided it was safe to offer the letter for sale. We acquired it directly from an agent of the family. Given Oswald's repeated denial during questioning whether or not he was a communist, and he always answered "no", this documents that he was telling the truth only by virtue of not being accepted into membership. ACCOMPANIED by a 1973 photograph of Gus Hall amidst his library and a photograph of Oswald being shot by Jack Ruby signed by Detective James Leavelle, to whom Oswald was handcuffed at the time.         I Owe Russia $1200.

Garden City. Doubleday. 1963. 8vo., original cloth with price-clipped dust wrapper. A little chipping and light creasing to wrapper, otherwise a very good copy. First edition inscibed by Bob Hope "To Father David, This is what I do between golf games, very best, Bob Hope." A collection of anaecdotes including stories from a trip Bob Hope made to Russia in the early 1960s. [sold with] 24 pages of typescript carbon copies containing notes for Bob Hope's comedy. The majority of the notes are for the Peace Officer's Shrine Club Dinner held at the Statler-Hilton on April 20th 1964. The notes are in four sections, one based around the District Attorney William B. McKesson, another on Sheriff Peter J. Pitchess, one on Police Chief William Parker and miscellaneous notes. Several of the notes are repeated at various stages throughout the various sheets. We presume that these notes are unpublished. The other sheets of notes refer to an episode of Chrysler Theatre TV Series for 25th September 1964, with the upcoming Presdiential Election bearing the brunt of Hope's comedy. "Both candidates are watching each other like hawks...LBJ sneezed the other day and Goldwater accused him of germ warfare." Bob Hope Presents the Chrysler Theatre was an American anthology series, sponsored by Chrysler Corporation, which ran on NBC from 1963 through 1967. The show was hosted by Bob Hope, but it had a variety of formats, including musical, dramatic, and comedy. Hope was paid $25,000 per week for those episodes which he merely introduced, and $500,000 for those in which he starred in

        Confessions of an Advertising Man

Atheneum, New York 1963 - Scarce presentation copy in the folding jacket, inscribed by legendary Madison Avenue ad-man David Ogilvy. The dust jacket flaps advise the reader to "see inside. for samples of David Ogilvy's wizardry," and it unfolds to reveal six classic advertisements he created. Born in 1911 in England, David Ogilvy emigrated to America to become Associate Director of Dr. George Gallup's Audience Research Institute at Princeton. During the war, he was on Sir William Stephenson's staff in British Security Co-Ordination and served as Second Secretary at the British Embassy. After the war he founded the advertising agency Ogilvy, Benson and Mather. It continues today as Ogilvy & Mather. Known as "the father of advertising", Ogilvy attributed the success of his campaigns to meticulous research of consumer habits, a skill gained during his years at Gallup. 'Confessions of an Advertising Man' was a best seller, and is considered required reading in many modern advertising classes. This first edition consisted of 5,000 copies, most of which were heavily read and worn, and few of which are found inscribed. Some have suggested that Ogilvy served as the model for Don Draper in the series 'Mad Men.'. Jacket toned, a few small chips at ends of spine panel, short separation along upper joint where folded; cloth fresh and bright [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Malcolm Kilduff, an assistant press secretary, nsaid me [said he] 'cannot say' whether the president is alive and 'cannot say where he was hit. There are too many stories'.         Years of Combat. Years of Command.

1963, 1966. 1963 - Two volumes. Illustrations, cartographic endpapers to volume one. First editions. 8vo., cloth, dust jackets. London, Collins. The first volume, 'Years of Combat', inscribed on the title page 'To Douglas Bader - with my regards Sholto Douglas', the second volume, co-authored by Robert Wright, is inscribed on the front free endpaper 'For Henry. With fond love and very best wishes from Hazel and Katherine Sholto's wife and daughter 11th March 1971', ?and Katherine? being in a different hand. Loosely inserted in the second volume a substantial 2 page TLS to Douglas from Robert Wright, dated 10th August 1959, going in to considerable detail about the facts of a mission to drop spare artificial legs to Douglas Bader after he had been shot down over France, in particular repeating the memories of Bader's fellow Aces Johnny Kent and Johnnie Johnson and suggesting Douglas tells the story in this book, where it duly appears, including the interesting detail that the RAF and their German enemies kept a radio channel open between them, mainly to alert each other to airmen downed in the sea. Douglas says he was telephoned by Churchill about this, Churchill accusing Douglas of fraternising with the enemy, Douglas standing up for himself, pointing out that the mission shot down several Bf.109s, which was 'not very fraternal'. Douglas was a fighter pilot in the Great War, after which for a while he worked as a test pilot for Handley Page, before joining the RAF in 1920 where he rose through the ranks. At the beginning of the Second World War there were serious disagreements between the most senior officers in the RAF over tactics, Douglas and Trafford Leigh-Mallory wanting to confront the approaching German Air Force in large formations further away from the coast, while Keith Park and Hugh Dowding wanted to fight in smaller groups, which they reasoned were quicker to react. Douglas won the argument, Dowding and Park were dismissed, and it was Douglas who became head of Fighter Command, where he put the tactic, called the'Big Wing' theory, in to immediate practice. One of the most enthusiastic proponents of the Big Wing theory was the presentee, Douglas Bader, who is credited by many as the originator of the tactic. In 1943 Douglaswas appointed the Commander-in-Chief of the RAF in the Middle East for a year, after which he was tasked as Commander-in-Chief of Coastal Command with planningthe preparations for D-Day. Both dust jackets slightly rubbed. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Gordon Parks [LIFE Magazine archive print from Parks's estate]

1963 - Gelatin silver print, the negative probably 1963, the print vintage. Image 13-1/4 x 10-1/4 in., unmounted. Stamped on the verso with the LIFE Magazine archive stamp dated “1-14-63.” In near fine condition, a few small nicks along the edges, penciled archival notations on the verso. Probably one of a few copies, and the subject’s own copy. Eisenstaedt photographed this sculptural portrait of Parks in 1963 when both were close associates on the roster of LIFE Magazine. This silver print comes directly from subject’s estate. A near variant of this image, the subject posing outdoors in a jacket over the same soft-collar shirt and V-neck sweater, appears with the Editor’s Note signed by George P. Hunt in LIFE Magazine for May 31, 1963 (vol. 54, no. 33, p. 3). Provenance: Estate of Gordon Parks
