        Confessions of an Advertising Man

New York: Atheneum, 1963. First edition, inscribed. Jacket toned, a few small chips at ends of spine panel, short separation along upper joint where folded; cloth fresh and bright. Scarce presentation copy in the folding jacket, inscribed by legendary Madison Avenue ad-man David Ogilvy. The dust jacket flaps advise the reader to "see inside... for samples of David Ogilvy's wizardry," and it unfolds to reveal six classic advertisements he created. Born in 1911 in England, David Ogilvy emigrated to America to become Associate Director of Dr. George Gallup's Audience Research Institute at Princeton. During the war, he was on Sir William Stephenson's staff in British Security Co-Ordination and served as Second Secretary at the British Embassy. After the war he founded the advertising agency Ogilvy, Benson and Mather. It continues today as Ogilvy & Mather. Known as "the father of advertising", Ogilvy attributed the success of his campaigns to meticulous research of consumer habits, a skill gained during his years at Gallup. 'Confessions of an Advertising Man' was a best seller, and is considered required reading in many modern advertising classes. This first edition consisted of 5,000 copies, most of which were heavily read and worn, and few of which are found inscribed. Some have suggested that Ogilvy served as the model for Don Draper in the series 'Mad Men.'.

1963 - Gelatin silver print, the negative probably 1963, the print vintage. Image 13-1/4 x 10-1/4 in., unmounted. Stamped on the verso with the LIFE Magazine archive stamp dated “1-14-63.” In near fine condition, a few small nicks along the edges, penciled archival notations on the verso. A near variant of this image, the subject posing outdoors in a jacket over the same soft-collar shirt and V-neck sweater, appears with the Editor’s Note signed by George P. Hunt in LIFE Magazine for May 31, 1963 (vol. 54, no. 33, p. 3). Provenance: Estate of Gordon Parks

        Harry, the Rat with Women

New York: McGraw-Hill, 1963. 1 vols. 8vo. Dual cloth. Fine in chipped dust jacket. 1 vols. 8vo. Inscribed with a Cartoon. Feiffer's witty and touching inscription to the famed New York columnist, Leonard Lyons, extends over the first four preliminary pages, with an accompanying cartoon: "For -> Leonard -> Lyons -> -never a rat with a woman or anyone else." The running cartoon at the bottom of each page culminates in a drawing of a woman smiling contentedly before a large flower. Leonard Lyons was for many years one of New York's most prominent journalists. His column in the New York Post, "The Lyons' Den" was widely read and immensely popular during the many years since its commencement in 1934. Unlike many of his colleagues, however, Lyons was highly respected for his fairness and highmindedness. According to Ralph Blumenthal in STORK CLUB (Boston, 2000), "Lyons didn't believe in writing about romances and divorces. Nor, it was said, did he ever violate a confidence ... He corresponded with world leaders and literary giants ..." (p. 131).

        The Natural

London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1963. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine-/Fine-. First Impression of Malamud's first novel, a classic of baseball literature. 8vo: 248pp, including the addendum, "Some notes on the game of baseball," for British readers. Publisher's royal blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt with red baseball device; beautifully illustrated dust jacket, priced 21s, lettered in black and yellow. Moderate spotting to page edges and (lightly) rear panel of jacket, otherwise Fine. Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors' works. First published in New York, in 1952, this is the story of Roy Hobbs, "modelled on Babe Ruth and Shoeless Joe Jackson. It tells of a hero's remarkable come-back after years of lost promise, and then the terrible self-ruining of his second chance." Hobbs is a prodigy whose career is sidetracked when he is shot by a woman whose motivation remains mysterious. "Towards the end of his painstaking revisions, at the last moment in the galley proofs, Malamud hit upon the sentence that clinched the meaning both of the book and of much of Malamud's own struggling career: 'We have two lives, Roy, the life we learn with and the life we have after that.' Writing was Malamud's second life." (Literary Encyclopedia) Filmed in 1984 with Robert Redford. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Very Good./Good -.. np (48pp), 26 b&w illustrations.         King Lear

London: Ganymed Original Editions Limited, 1963. Limited Edition. Folio. Fine. Kokoschka, Oskar. No. 265 of 275 (plus four additional lettered copies), Elephant Folio - over 15" tall to 23" tall, signed by artist. King Lear is regarded by many as one of Shakespeare's supreme acheivements, noted for "its probing observations on the nature of human suffering and kinship". George Bernard Shaw opined that "No man will ever write a better tragedy than Lear." (N.B., above info and quotes from Wiki). ***ABOUT THE ARTIST: Oskar Kokoschka (1886 - 1980) was one of the leading exponents of Expressionism. In his early portraits, gesture intensifies the psychological penetration of character; especially powerful among his later works are allegories of the artist's emphatic humanism. His dramas, poems, and prose are significant for their psychological insight and stylistic daring - which perfectly complements the themes of the play. ***DESCRIPTION: Unbound Elephant Folio volume cased in grey cloth clamshell box with blue, grey, and red marbled papers and gilt lettering on the spine (although colophon and prospectus call for all copies to have been issued bound); includes sixteen black-and-white lithographs by Oskar Kokoschka created in 1963, hand set in Fell type and printed at the University Press, Oxford, on handmade Crisbrook paper specially made for this edition by J. Barcham Greene Ltd., the text is based on the "New Shakespeare" published by the Cambridge University Press; 17.75" tall, signed by artist Oskar Kokoschka on limitation page, Limited Edition no. 263 of 275 (plus four additional lettered copies). ***CONDITION: The sheets are in fine condition with some very slight rubbing from the marbled lining onto the first page; clamshell box is in fine condition with some very minor wear along corners and one very tiny (2 mm.) brown spot on the front cover. ***POSTAGE: Due to weight, additional postage will apply; we are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international customers, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
