The Spy Who Came in from the Cold

Gollancz, 1963. 1st edition. Hardcover. Very fine, with very clean boards and endpapers and pages, no foxing at all, in a very fine dustjacket, absolutely none of the usual fading to the spine, and no wear at all to the extremities. A unique copy, having been signed by the author twice on the title page, in both his real name, David Cornwell, and as John le Carre. The author's best-known novel features in virtually every list of the best books since 1950, including the recent Daily Telegraph's 500 Must-Read Books, ' a marvellously bleak take on the Cold War, showing spies at their morally repugnant worst'. Graham Greene hailed the book as the best spy story he had ever read. Many critics assumed le Carre was spilling the screts of MI6, where he worked, but he has said that the book would never have been published had it been true and that the service passed it for publication on the grounds that it gave away no secrets. Nevertheless, with his third book, le Carre totally altered the style of espionage fiction, and this is an absolutely superb example of his bestselling title.

Every Building on the Sunset Strip

Los Angeles: Edward Ruscha. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE (with extra folding flap at end) of Edward Ruscha's most famous book; perhaps the greatest example of the new genre of art book that he created. Bound accordion-style as one continuous folding strip extending to 27-feet long. Starting in 1963, with the publication of Twentysix Gasoline Stations, Ruscha began a series of photographic art books that documented ordinary aspects of life in Los Angeles. For Every Building on the Sunset Strip, Ruscha mounted a motorized Nikon to the back of a pick-up truck and photographed every building he passed. The resulting book, with the pictures printed in order and labeled with their street numbers, achieved an effective non-judgemental and almost anthropological record of previously unexplored details and aspects of the urban experience. Ruscha exercised control over each step of the bookmaking process and with the use of inexpensive offset printing, standard paper, and simple, paperback bindings, he created a new genre of art book designed for commercial distributors rather than art galleries. Ruscha's books, which became a staple of Conceptualism, were extremely influential to younger generations of artists. Los Angeles: Edward Ruscha, 1966. Small quarto, original white wrappers, original silver paper-covered slipcase. Light soiling to wrappers, darkening and crease to spine; slipcase with slight edgewear. With stamp of the American distributor, Wittenborn and Company, on title. An outstanding copy of a rare and fragile book.

London: Secker & Warburg, 1963. First edition, preceding both the Canadian and American publication. Octavo, original cloth. Warmly inscribed by Leonard Cohen. Fine in an excellent dust jacket showing just light toning. The author's first novel. "Is there any Canadian novel as compelling and as good as at capturing youthful anxieties as J. D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye? Absolutely. . . . Leonard Cohen's first novel, The Favorite Game." [Globe & Mail]. Is there any Canadian novel as compelling and as good as at capturing youthful anxieties as J. D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye? Absolutely. . . . Leonard Cohen's first novel, The Favorite Game" (Globe & Mail). Paul Quarrington said "[t]he Favorite Game is a morally brave book, intimate and unflinching. . . . Leonard Cohen sustains the highest level of poetic craftsmanship throughout," and The Observer added "[h]e is a writer of terrific energy and color, a Rabelaisian comic and a visualizer of memorable scenes." Lastly, Calgary Albertan concluded that "[i]t is the kind of book that becomes a law unto itself, simply because there is nothing with which to compare it.

New York: Harper and Row, 1963. First Edition. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, LARRY MCMURTRY. 8vo, publisher’s original cloth, in the original dustjacket. 298pp. A fine copy in like dustjacket, very fresh and attractive. SIGNED COPY OF LARRY MCMURTRY’S SECOND BOOK, every bit as hard to find in collectable condition as his first, HORSEMAN, PASS BY. This copy has been signed boldly on the free-fly by McMurtry in blue ink. The jacket is in what is sometimes called “Second State”, which is actually the same printing as the “first” but with the price clipped off by the publisher and replaced by a small sticker (in some cases a stamp) at $4.95. This was all done prior to the book’s original release date, thus only a very small number of copies can be found with the original $4.50 price intact. “Leaving Cheyenne traces the lives of three West Texas characters as they follow that sundown trail: Gideon Fry, the serious rancher; Johnny McCloud, the free-spirited cowhand; and Molly Taylor, the sensitive woman they both love and who bears them each a son. Tragic circumstances mark the trail but McMurtry's style never turns melodramatic or sentimental.” - modern editorial review.

Extraordinary inscribed copy. On the half title, the poet has written: "A poem is something/you call a poem/P-O-E-M/or P-O-M-E/and works/Milton Acorn/in loving appreciation /of/Joe Rosenblatt/Joe Irving/Red Lane/and Lionel Kearns (MA)". The inscription likely dates from the mid-'60's when "People's Poet" Acorn was living in Vancouver. He used to hang out in a coffee house named The Advance Mattress Company, and was involved politically with the LSA (League for Socialist Action), a Trotskyite organization. Joe Irving was a folk singer and a poet in residence at the LSA offices on Granville Street. Richard Stanley "Red" Lane (1936-1964) was the older brother of poet Patrick Lane and a promising West Coast poet in his own right. Joe Rosenblatt got his early start as a poet with assistance from Acorn, Al Purdy and Earle Birney. Lionel Kearns was a young poet at UBC and a member of the original Tish group.
