        Hummingbirds and Orchids of Mexico

Mexico City: Editorial Fournier, 1963 This is a very good hardcover copy in a good only remnant of the dust jacket. The jacket front panel only survives, and it has edge-wear, creases, light soil. Grey cloth covers clean overall but some soiling to bottom of spine. Completely clean inside. First few pages have a soft vertical crease, and top right corner bumped, otherwise very good throughout. This book is effectively the first actual publication of Rafael Montes de Oca's great 19th century work. He was unable to arrange publication in his lifetime, and only the chance appearance of a portfolio of his prints about 75 years after his death, made it possible in 1963. This book was published as a limited numbered edition of 3000 copies: 1500 in English and 1500 in Spanish. Editing and foreword by Carolina Amor de Fournier. Introduction and texts on the hummingbirds by Rafael Martin del Campo. English translation by Norman Pelham Wright. 59 spectacular colored plates reproduced from original watercolors in the Galería de Arte Mexicano, México, D.F. painted by Rafael Montes de Oca from 1874-1878. A beautiful production. 16" high X 12" wide, 34 pages of text.. Limited Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good.

American Folk Blues Festival, Original, Vintage, 1963, German Concert Poster, A0 Format

1963. American Folk Blues Festival, Original Vintage Concert Poster, Sportpalast, Berlin, Oct. 12 1963, produced by Horst Lippmann, designed by Gunther Kieser, with the Michel+Kieser imprint to the upper left margin. Huge A0 Format, 46.5" by 39", (118 cm by 99 cm) the poster is about fine, never been folded, with touch of wear to bottom right and top left margin, a clean closed tear to bottom edge has been professionally repaired with archival white tape to the verso. This striking black and white poster is one of the finest that Kieser designed for the AFBF and the all-star lineup of blues musicians featured in the second year of the festival was arguably the strongest ever assembled for the tour. Uncommon in the large A0 Format, it is very unusual to find the poster without folds and is scarce, thus. Stored and shipped rolled in a mailing tube. The American Folk Blues Festival was the brainchild of German concert promoters, Horst Lippmann and Fritz Rau, who had been successfully presenting jazz concerts in Germany since the mid - 1950’s. First held in 1962, over the next decade, working with the well-connected Chicago bluesman, composer and bassist Willie Dixon, Lippmann & Rau presented a who’s who of American urban and country blues artists for the first time to European audiences, with successful concerts in England, France and Germany. Early exposure to these great American blues musicians inspired and influenced a generation of British musicians, including future rock stars Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, all of whom played an important role in the blue-based British Invasion of the 1960’s.. The posters created exclusively for the German AFBF festivals were designed by the eminent graphic designer Gunther Kieser and are representative of some of his finest music poster designs. A significant blues poster for the second presentation of the influential American Folk Blues Festival, in collector’s condition and very scarce in the large format without factory folds. J1811 .         TWENTYSIX GASOLINE STATIONS - A CHARMING SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY FROM ED RUSCHA

(RUSCHA, EDWARD). Ruscha, Edward. TWENTYSIX GASOLINE STATIONS - A CHARMING SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY FROM ED RUSCHA. Signed Presentation Copy from the Artist. Los Angeles. 1963 (1968).: Self-Published, Second Edition 1/500. 12mo. Printed Wrappers with Glassine. Artist's Book. Near Fine./Fine.. np (48pp), 26 b&w illustrations. Edward Ruscha's 1963 travelogue of decaying Americana, "Twentysix Gasoline Stations" is a deft photographic documentation of the iconic, then-vanishing roadside rest stops between his hometown of Oklahoma City and his newfound promised land of Los Angeles. A bright, handsome example of the uncommon 1968 second edition of the artist's landmark first book (entry B1 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999" which is also cited on page 140 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", and pages 198-201 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book") limited to a mere five hundred copies bearing the SIGNED PRESENTATION "For Pat - (check Jackrabbit, Arizona) / Best Wishes, Ed / 1969" in the year of publication in blue ink on the dedication page. American actress Patricia Quinn is perhaps best known for her role as Alice in "Alice's Restaurant", and from whom we obtained this significant tome directly. The matte white covers show a slight margin of light soiling to along the bottom edge, but none of the fading to the red lettering on the spine typically associated with this title. The publisher's fragile glassine wrapper is bright, fresh, and beautifully preserved.         THE COLLECTOR

London: Jonathan Cape, 1963 True First Edition in Black Boards. Crown 8vo, pp. 283. An exception copy of what is likely the original trial or advance binding preceding the usual brown cloth. In all likelihood a miniscule number of these black cloth bindings were distributed. Judging from the handful that have turned up over the last decade, perhaps as few as a couple of dozen. A fine copy in a very fine, bright price-clipped dustwrapper [All copies of the black binding have had their wrappers price-clipped]. Curiously there is the slightest variance in ink colour in the dustwrapper of this issue, more cyan & less magenta perhaps but there it is, none-the-less. Likely a function of the earliest part of the press run being responsible for the variation. A very fine exceptional copy of Fowles's breakthrough novel.. 1st Edition.

        TWENTYSIX GASOLINE STATIONS

Alhambra California: The Cunningham Press 1963 - First edition, first printing, numbered 242 of 400. Original white paper covers printed in red, with the original plain tissue wrapper. An excellent NEAR FINE bright copy with no inscriptions or stamps and no loose, marked or torn pages. Covers very faintly darkened to the bottom edge. The glassine is darkened and edge-worn with a tear and some associated loss to the front flap but complete. A terrific copy. Ruscha’s first book, initiating his much-imitated cut back, literal aesthetic. Produced cheaply and accessibly, Ruscha’s signature style is sympathetic to Warhol’s Pop Art movement and made without use of heavy paper or glossy hard covers. The twenty six gasoline stations follow Route 66 from West to East; Los Angeles, where Ruscha lives to Oklahoma City, where he grew up. The final station, at Groom in Texas, marks the beginning of the return journey. A scarce book, particularly as nice as this.
