'The Four-Dimensional Nightmare' First UK Edition

A first edition, first printing published by Gollancz in 1963. Bound in brown boards - as with Le Carre's 'The Spy Who Came in from the Cold' of the same year - this was perhaps a trial binding used by Gollancz for advance copies. This is the first we have seen. A near fine book with small spotting to the top edge - pages are fresh and clean and there are no inscriptions. In a very good+ unclipped wrapper with small v-shape chips to the corners. With 'X24' on the rear panel. A rare item for any Ballard collector.

SIGNED PERSONAL ADDRESS BOOK of New York Yankees catcher with many names including Jackie Robinson, Yogi Berra, etc

Hardcover. A few loose or detached pages. Backstrip lacking, shaken, but all there and quite scarce. Small (2-3/4" x 3-3/4") pocket-sized otherwise unremarkable flexible cloth address book but for the fact that it belonged to great New York Yankees catcher Elston Howard who has SIGNED it with his address at the beginning along with another smaller partial signature on the front pastedown. It contains numerous names, phone numbers, and addresses written by Howard including Jackie Robinson, Harry Belafonte, Carmine Basilio, Rocky Colavito, Roy Campanella, Eddie Fisher, Lefty Gomez, Yogi Berra, Ralph Houk, Minnie Minoso, Pee Wee Reese, Bill Skowron, etc., even Yankee Stadium itself. Elston Howard was the first African-American to play for the Yankees, one of the last major league clubs to become integrated. Due to the presence of Yogi Berra behind the plate, Howard played several different positions before he earned a regular job with the Yankees and still managed to be a member of four American League All-Star teams in that time. In 1963 Howard hit a career-high 28 home runs and was voted the American League's Most Valuable Player-- the first black player to win the honor. An excellent fielder and hitter, the nine-time All Star seemed to have only one weakness: speed. His manager Casey Stengel reportedly said of Howard: "I finally get a black guy and they give me the only one who can't run." Howard died in 1980 at the ago of 50.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson investigate David Frost

      c. 1963. Sheet size: 152 × 189 mm. Pen and ink on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Sunday Telegraph. Sherlock Holmes, with magnifying glass, and Dr Watson investigate the mysterious rise of the young David Frost, host of That Was The Week That Was. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

Strait-Jacket (Original screenplay for the 1964 film)

Culver City, CA: Columbia Pictures, 1963. Revised Final Draft script for the 1964 film.& & A film that provokes many perspectives. With an original screenplay by Robert Bloch written just a few years after the success of "Psycho," and with lead actress Joan Crawford fresh off the success of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" B-horror ringmaster William Castle introduced the female axe-murderer to American culture with this psychotronic gem. In an alternative view, in his essential volume on post-1960s horror films, "Nightmare Movies," Kim Newman notes: "The most peculiar and surprisingly popular psycho trend of the 1960s was the aging-actress-as-monster movie. The sub-genre was inaugurated with Robert Aldrich's 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?' (1962), with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford as bloated caricatures of their former selves ... Crawford [blew] her reputation on William Castle and Herman Cohen in 'Strait-Jacket' (1964), 'I Saw What You Did' (1965), 'Berserk!' (1967), and 'Trog' (1970)."& & Red studio wrappers, noted as REVISED FINAL DRAFT on the front wrapper, marked production No. 8691, dated June 3, 1963. Title page present, dated June 3, 1963, noted as REVISED FINAL DRAFT, with credits for screnwriter Bloch. 149 leaves, mimeograph on eye-rest green stock. Pages about Fine, wrapper Near Fine bound with two gold brads.& & Newman, p. 123. Weldon (1983), p. 662.
