I differenti. Capri 1963, Il disprezzo: Moravia, Godard, Bardot e gli altri

Skira 2013 1963. Brossura, volume in Italiano.

The Lord of the Rings - Original 1963 UK Deluxe Set, in Original Pauline Baynes Triptych Slipcase, Signed By the Author

London: Allen & Unwin, 1963. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. Original Cloth. Very Good Plus/No Jacket, as Issued. J.R.R. Tolkien. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien, published by George Allen & Unwin in 1963. The true 1st Deluxe Edition of the 3 volumes of the Lord of the Rings, comprised of "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King". The Fellowship of the Ring is signed by the author, J.R.R. Tolkien, to the title page. A wonderful provenance on this signature, as it comes with a note signed by Merlin Unwin, the son of Rayner Unwin. It states that The Fellowship, "belonged to my father Rayner Unwin (Tolkien's editor and publisher) and was kept in his personal library at our family home in Little Missenden, Buckinghamshire. After his death in 2000 it remained there until the death of his widow, Carol, in 2012. Merlin Unwin". The young lad whose book report was instrumental in the publishing of the Hobbit, kept this signed copy for many years. Has the initials A.R.R. to the back of the free endpaper. It has been added to this partial set, which had the original slipcase and the other two books, to complete this lovely set. I know of only one other signed set of this Deluxe Edition, which was given to Pauline Baynes, and recently sold for an extremely high price at auction. This set is bound in the original Black Buckram cloth with gilt titles, author and publisher to the spines of each volume. Each volume features Bevel-Edged boards, gilded page edges, and the original silk bookmark sewn in. The books are in Very Good Plus condition showing some light rubbing and marks to the covers, with almost no marks or rubbing to the gilded edges, Initials to the back free endpaper, with no other writing or inscriptions in any of the books, except for the authors signature. The textblocks are clean and unmarked, with a very tight binding. The original maps are all present, and have no tears or misfolds, nor any browning to the folds as often happens. The spine of the Two Towers is only slightly lighter in color, less so than the common flaw with this edition. Seems to only occur with the Two Towers, and rarely the other two books. The books are housed in the very scarce original publishers slipcase featuring the Pauline Baynes color "Triptych" artwork. This case has some minor splits starting to the entry corners, but very little rubbing to the back corners, and no bumped corners as is often found. Clean and bright, one of the nicest I've run across in many years. The scarcest of all the original Allen & Unwin 1st Editions, as well as the Houghton Mifflin issues, with the signed copy added, makes a marvelous set for the Tolkien enthusiast. According to publishers records, 1000 or less sets produced. Briefly mentioned in the Tolkien bibliography by Hammond and Anderson on page 98. The outside of the slipcase show some superficial rubbing, one small scuff to the back side edge, but whole & complete, without any major stains or faults. A rare opportunity for this scarce signed set with it's original Pauline Baynes illustrated slipcase. Digital images available upon request. Other Tolkien sets, original and rebound are available. Inquire if interested. A wonderful addition to anyone's Tolkien collection. Very Good Plus / No Jacket, as Issued.

Pasajes de la guerra revolucionaria. 1st edition.

126 (1) pp. 8°. Original cased boards. The state of condition is poor: front cover loose, rear cover nearly loose; rubbed and bumped; rear cover waterstained. On half-title with handwritten two-line dedication of the author to Rob Taber and handwritten signature "Che", dated New York 13/12/64. Che Guevara had been the head of the Cuban delegation, that visited the UNO in New York in december 1964, where and when he met Rob Taber; on 12/11 he held a most remarkable speech, encouraging the states of the "Third World" to unite their voices; the speech can be called the hour of birth of the selfconfidence of the "block-free" states. Robert Taber was "one of the two CBS newsmen who went into Oriente Province to give the lie to Batista's claim that Fidel Castro was dead. At great personal peril they smuggeled television equipment into the mountains, and Taber's documentary interview with Castro and the rebels is now history. (...) Taber lived with them. He was treated as one of them. He suffered their ordeals and he risked their perils. (...) During the abortive CIA-sponsered "invasion" of Cuba by anti-Castro groups in April, 1961, Taber was again with the rebel Army, and again in the midst of the shooting (he was wounded by a machine gun) and again the only American reporter to be on the scene." (text on the slaps of: R. Taber: M-26. The Biography of a Revolution. New York 1961.) A copy of Taber's "M-26" is added; verso flying endpaper with nine-line handwritten dedication and signature of the author: "For Charles Ledger, marking three decades of a friendship that began in London with the publication of this book, my first, in 1961, when he was my kind host and first reader."         TYPED LETTER SIGNED

New York, NY 1963 - Typed letter signed on Hoover's personal letterhead dated January, 11, 1963. "I have no present recollection of Stanford-California games prior to the one described in the Memoirs. There may have been such games. In my freshman year I was manager of the football team. Yours faithfully, Herbert Hoover." Letter has been signed by Hoover in black ink. Fine Condition Herbert Clark Hoover was the 31st American president, serving from 1929-33. Hoover was a successful mining engineer and businessman in Australia and China before turning to civic service and politics. During and after World War I he was head of the U.S. Food Administration and the American Relief Administration, and was widely credited with helping prevent starvation in war-torn Europe. A Republican, he then served as Secretary of Commerce under both presidents Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge. Herbert Hoover defeated Democrat Alfred E. Smith in the presidential election of 1928 and took office in 1929. The stock market crash that year, and the ensuing Great Depression, overwhelmed Hoover's presidency. In spite of a wide variety of successful reforms, Hoover was held accountable for the dire economic situation and was badly defeated in his bid for a second term by Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt.

        Cat's Cradle

New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1963. First edition. Octavo. Signed by the author with a self-caricature. Light sunning to the cloth, a near fine copy with thegreen topstain bright in a near fine dust jacket that shows some light wear. Housed in a custom quarter morocco clamshell box. A very sharp copy. Cat's Cradle is an apocalyptic tale of this planet's ultimate fate, it features a midget as the protagonist; a complete, original theology created by a calypse singer; and a cision of the future that is at once blackly fatalistic and hilariously funny. Cat's Cradle is one of the century's most important works. Chosen by the Modern Library as one of the best 100 novels of the 20th century.

        MOONRAKER

This a first edition first impression example. The word "shoot" complete on Page 10. Unrestored, the ondition is good plus with some blemishes. See images. The top of the black cover has a minor separation from the book - but no loss. Easily restored. There is a a split at on bottom of spine and the crease is fragile. Book corners are slightly  bumped with a little loss on two corners. But the book is tight with no lean or cocking. Unmarked - no inscriptions. The d/j is a later example  - not a facsimile but I think 1963. Original Kenneth Lewis design. The spine deficiencies can be restored. With a run of only 10000 the first printing is very scarce - in any condition. The price reflects the condition of the binding.

STRENGTH TO LOVE Inscribed to a Neighbor and Babysitter for his Children

New York: Harper & Row, (1963). First Edition. Cloth-backed boards. Very Good in a bright, Near Fine dustwrapper with mild wear. King's second book and first collection of his sermons. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front free endpaper: "To my friend/Rachel Ward/With Best wishes/and warm Personal Regards/Martin." Rachel Ward is mentioned by Dexter Scott King, son of Martin Luther King, Jr., in his book GROWING UP KING: AN INTIMATE MEMOIR when he describes his home life in 1967: "The kitchen is beyond the dining room. There my mother or the ladies who helped her, Mrs. Dorothy Lockhart or Mrs. Newman or sometimes Mrs. Rachel Ward, caused a racket of pots and pans. Mrs. Ward and Mrs. Patricia Cook Latimore sometimes looked after us when Mom and Dad had to do important business." Dexter was seven years old when his father was killed in 1968. Genuinely signed books by King are hard to come by; those with such a fine association as this are rarely encountered.
