Cape , 1963. Cape , 1963. First edition. Original white buckram backed boards in pictorial dustwrapper. A dedication copy, inscribed by Fleming on the title page to friend and colleague, Denis Hamilton, quoting the printed dedication, "To "A man called 'CD'" from Ian. Further annotated "CDH" by Fleming on the reverse of the front flap of the dustwrapper, indicating that this was probably one of a handful of author's copies marked for presentation. A fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper, with just a hint of wear to the spine ends, but quite bright on the pink spine, which is susceptible to sun damage. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographic plates. Charles Denis Hamilton, affectionately known as CD, met Fleming on the staff of the Sunday Times (which Hamilton was to become editor of in 1961) after the war. They became firm friends and Hamilton urged Fleming to start writing novels. In 1961 Hamilton tended to Fleming when he collapsed with a heart attack during an editorial conference. Thrilling Cities began as a series of articles undertaken by Fleming for the Sunday Times, once again at Hamilton's insistence, "Partly to please Thomson and Denis Hamilton, who disclosed some of their plans for the Sunday Times to him, Fleming showed himself eager to take part in them and agreed to undertake the round-the-world trip and, if it came off, to do a companion series of articles on European cities." (Pearson). In his Author's Note to the book, Fleming writes, "Nothing remains but to dedicate this biased, cranky but at least zestful hotchpotch to my friends and colleagues on the Sunday Times in London and abroad, and particularly to a man called 'C.D.', who pulled the trigger..."

Basil Seal Rides Again or The Rake's Regress

London: Chapman & Hall, 1963. London: Chapman & Hall,, 1963. Frontispiece by Kathleen Hale. Quarto. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and pictorial design to upper board gilt, blue endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in a blue quarter morocco slipcase and chemise. Colour frontispiece by Kathleen Hale. Spine slightly faded, margins of contents faintly toned. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. One of a limited edition of 750 numbered copies, this an out of series copy inscribed by the author on the limitation leaf, "for Jackie & Frankie, with sexagenarian greetings, from Evelyn". Frances Donaldson was an author and one of Waugh's neighbours. "In the often acerbic Evelyn Waugh, Donaldson, compassionate farmer's wife and liberal humanist, could scarcely have found herself with a west country neighbour less similar, brilliant satirist, ardent Roman Catholic, and arch-reactionary as he was. But in Evelyn Waugh: Portrait of a Country Neighbour (1967) Frances Donaldson produced a critical yet immensely sympathetic reassessment of a man seemingly imbued with hidden charm. For many people Donaldson redressed with tact and truthfulness Waugh's popular image, that of a thoroughly unpleasant drunken bore, an image assiduously polished by Waugh himself. He was, she wrote, the only person she had ever known 'who seemed sincerely to long for death; he was terrifying to a stranger, merciless to a friend; but it is true that his house and life revolved round jokes; very, very funny jokes' (F. Donaldson, Evelyn Waugh: Portrait of a Country Neighbour, 1967, xiii)" (ODNB).

New Orleans: Loujon Press, 1963. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine in Wraps. Large 8vo. Near Fine. Front rice paper tissue moderately creased. Trace rubbing here and there at extremities. Else bright, sharp, clean, and sound in custom-made linen slipcase. INSCRIBED, DATED AND SIGNED BY BUKOWSKI in silver ink: "There's never enough to drink, but there's always somebody to tell you what writing should be. Charles Bukowski 12-10-63." Above this inscription Bukowski has added an original drawing. A particularly Bukowskian inscription in a particularly handsome example of a fragile production. Widely considered Bukowski's most beautifully-produced volume, and arguably his first major collection. One of 777 copies designed, hand-printed and -bound by Jon and Louise Webb, this one of a very small number specially-signed copies (several sources suggest 40, but I have been unable to independently confirm) with an original drawing and aphoristic inscription by Bukowski.         Typed Letter Signed from John O'Hara to screenwriter and producer Eugene Solow regarding adapting his novel "A Family Party

N.p., 1963. N.p.: N.p., 1963. Typed letter signed, holograph date of "23 May '63" at the top, and with O'Hara's Princeton, NJ address blindstamped to the upper corner, to screenwriter and producer Eugene Solow. Solow is best known as the screenwriter for the 1939 adaptation of Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" starring Burgess Meredith and Lon Chaney, Jr, and went on to a long career as a television writer and producer.& & The letter begins with O'Hara discussing Buddy Ebsen and Ed Begley, the latter whom O'Hara states he prefers for the role of Sam Merritt in "A Family Party," a property he says "is very much for sale." & & O'Hara then goes on to decline adapting the work himself, stating he will "never again work on my own material after its original appearance," continuing with a breakdown of his forthcoming publications, and boldly stating his desire "to create a body of work that tells... the story of the first half of this century in this country." The letter concludes with a scathing comment about the current state of television writing, and a promise to send Solow's original letter, presumably regarding the rights to "A Family Plan," to H.L. Swanson, O'Hara's Hollywood literary agent.& & Single leaf, recto only, with two holograph ink notations ("McHugh" and "Swanson," each followed by numbers) presumably by Solow at the top. About Near Fine, with a chip missing at the top right and a single, short closed tear at the bottom edge, folded once horizontally and twice vertically for mailing.
