Collection of 14 autograph letters and cards and original photographs from Jacqueline Kennedy to Margot Fonteyn

An important collection of 14 autograph letters and cards and original photographs from Jacqueline Kennedy to Margot Fonteyn. The collection includes: A four-page autograph letter, signed, "Jacqueline Kennedy" June 5, 1963. Written on White House stationery, with hand addressed envelope. To "My dear Dame Margot," inviting Margot Fonteyn to dance at the White House. A four page autograph letter signed, "Jackie", April 30th (1965), to "Dear Dame Margot." With matching envelope with "Mrs John F. Kennedy" printed on flap, franked with Jacqueline Kennedy stamp, and hand addressed by her to "Dame Margot Fonteyn de Arias." On dancing with Rudolph Nureyev after a dinner party. Excerpts: "...Please tell Rudi - I can' t call him Mr. Nureyev after stepping on his feet for an hour - that he is the sweetest most tolerant dancing partner and I just love him for being so nice"; "Bobby [Kennedy] said we might have an evening again before you go - which would be lovely." A four page autograph letter signed "Jackie." Written on blue 1040 Fifth Avenue stationary [no date, ca. Summer, 1965]. To "Dear Margot and Tito." Jackie writes of taking her son and daughter to see Margot Fonteyn's performance of Giselle. This letter includes hand written thank you notes from both Caroline and John Kennedy Jr. The correspondence reflects Kennedy's deep admiration of both ballet and of Fonteyn. It also provides valuable insight into Kennedy's attempts while First Lady to bring ballet to the American people. The long friendship between Kennedy and Fonteyn which began in 1962 and extended until, at least, the marriage of Caroline Kennedy in 1986, is also documented in these letters and photographs. Provenance: Estate of Margot Fonteyn.

EXPLORING OTHER WORLDS **Gene Roddenberry's Copy**

Collier Books, New York, 1963, New York - An iconic copy of this paperback from the early 1960's that has an interplanetary spaceship illustrated on the front cover. This was Gene Roddenberry's copy as evidenced by his embossed stamp that is found at several places in the book. Name on embossed stamp is E.W. Roddenberry and shows a Beverly Glen address in Los Angeles. Gene Roddenberry was of course short for Eugene W. Roddenberry. This copy not an ideal copy of the book but it is THE COPY owned by Mr. Roddenberry who created the Star Trek series for television and later also for several motion pictures. The illustration on cover couldn't be much closer to the image seen at the beginning of Star Trek episodes which has the Starship Enterprise speeding towards an outer space destination. Roddenberry's embossed stamp can be found on first blank flyleaf, first page of introduction, at least two pages of text and on the final page at bottom margin. Unfortunately someone, possibly Roddenberry himself, tore off part of the stamp on last page and took part of a line of text with it There is also a corner torn off the title page at upper right where presumably there was also an embossed stamp or something else Roddenberry or someone else did not want to stay with the book. Still, there are at least four embossed stamps remaining and part of a fifth on the last page. The stampings on pages of text blend in to varying degrees with the printed text, but the stamping on front endpaper is easily readable in full. Another condition issue is wear to right edge of front cover resulting in small edge loss not affecting the front cover illustration however. This paperback came out in 1963 when Roddenberry was planning the Star Trek series. It is interesting to speculate what contents of this paperback, which is an anthology of several science fiction space short stories, might have influenced Roddenberry as he envisioned the series. It is perhaps worthy of note that one of the stories in the book features a planet called Vulcan (where Spock is from according to the tv series.) This story titled "At The Center Of Gravity" is by Ross Rocklynne. Perhaps most interesting is text from the beginning of the last short story in the book, by Sam Moskowitz, titled "Man Of The Stars." First sentence reads, "Thousands of men have spun a trail of daring adventure and pioneering in the spaceways." And later is the phrase, "Pioneers who blasted open the greatest frontier of them all." Is it too much to think that these lines influenced the writing of the opening lines of each episode of Star Trek spoken by William Star Trek? In any event, this paperpack is obviously no mere paperback but is instead a valuable relic of a television legend. Octavo, 256pp [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        C: A Journal of Poetry Vol. 1, No. 4.

Lorenz Gude 1963 - New York: Lorenz Gude, 1963. Folio, mimeographed and stapled into wraps silkscreened from a polaroid by Andy Warhol. Association copy, signed by Berrigan and inscribed to Dennis Shea by Edwin Denby, with holograph corrections and additions. The fourth issue of the central periodical of the second generation of New York School poets, infamous for the wraps, the front and back of which are silkscreened from a polaroid portrait of Edwin Denby and Gerard Malanga by Warhol. The cover image shows Denby seated, with Malanga standing behind him; the rear wrap reproduces a subsequent photograph of Malanga kissing Denby. The circumstances of the creation of this issue are examined in minute detail in Wolf, who makes a case that this is the first known Warhol silkscreen from a polaroid. Warhol was deeply fascinated by the downtown poetry scenes, and went to great lengths to insinuate himself among the poets. The serial nature of much of his later artwork was heavily influenced by the little poetry magazines coming out of New York City at that time, and this two part image, bracketing the mimeographed pages of this fourth issue of C, is the central artifact of that relationship. The Warhol covers have largely overshadowed what is one of the most important issues of C, devoted to the work of Edwin Denby and underscoring the huge influence he had on the poets of the New York Schools. This copy is inscribed by Denby to Dennis Shea, who was a friend of Berrigan and other members of the Tulsa Wing of the New York School; the association is especially meaningful for an issue of C, as Shea also helped print issues on the C Press mimeograph. Berrigan has also written out a corrected line to Denby's poem The Silence at Night, and there are also seven additional holograph corrections or additions in blue ink. Of the various issues of C that weÕve seen, this copy has by far the cleanest register, and is perhaps one of the earlier prints pulled from the screen. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Frankfurt am Main: Suhrkamp Verlag, 1963. Frankfurt am Main: Suhrkamp Verlag,, 1963. Französische Orginalfassungen. Deutsche Übertragung von Elmar Tophoven. Englische Übertragung von Samuel Beckett. Octavo. Original black and white cloth, titles to spine white on black label, cream bound silk bookmark. With the dust jacket. A fine copy in an excellent jacket with very light rubbing along edges and a small closed tear to rear cover. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by Beckett on the title page: "For Pat with love and gratitude. Sam, Paris Feb. 1964." At the time, the Northern Irish actor was playing the part of Hamm in Endgame, which opened at Studio des Champs-Elysées in late February. Magee subsequently gave the copy to director Peter Brook, with whom he later collaborated on scene and screen, adding another gift inscription to the title page: "To Peter Brook with gratitude, Patrick Magee." With loosely inserted autograph note signed by Magee: "It is never worthwhile giving anybody anything except your most treasured possessions. If you think this is sentimental ? you are crazy ? in the wrong way. Love, Pat." This is the first volume of a two-volume collection of Beckett's dramatic works published by Suhrkamp. It includes Waiting for Godot, Endgame, Act without Words I and II, and Cascando. French and German versions of the plays are printed side-by-side throughout, the English translations are collected at the end.

        Embers. 2 LP's in original BBC-wrappers.

London, BBC Transcription Service, 1963.. 4°. 2 Records. Yellow covers. Excellent condition with only minor signs of wear to the covers. Very Scarce !. The Beckett who began to write radio plays in the mid-fifties was no stranger to the medium: in Roussillon, where he lived in hiding from 1942-45, the radio transmitter was the crucial information conduit for Resistance groups, and the BBC, which was to commission All That Fall (1956) and Embers (1959), its main source. Half a century later, as the Columbia Encyclopedia reminds us, radio is still primarily an information medium, a conductor of messages, whether news flashes, announcements of events, weather reports, and today the ubiquitous "sigalerts" that advise the driver about freeway conditions and traffic accidents even as they are taking place. All the more reason, then, for the radio artist--and Beckett is surely one of the finest --to turn this information function, this relaying of messages from A to B, inside out. "Communication," writes Michel Serres, "is only possible between two persons used to the same forms, trained to code and decode a meaning by using the same key."         Monte Walsh

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company. Very Good in Very Good+ dj. 1963. First Edition. Hardcover. [a solid copy with only minor wear, although the top page edges show a number of paper-clip indentations (as though various groups of pages had been clipped together at one time (photo upon request), and some reinforcement has been applied to the front hinge by a professional paper conservator; jacket shows some wear and very slight paper loss at corners, but is generally clean and attractive]. Western novel by the author of "Shane," following the fortunes of a fiercely independent cowboy, from his childhood as a "runaway boy to trail hand, to topnotch cowhand and bronc buster, to aging saddle bum." It proved a perfect movie role for Lee Marvin, who starred in the laconic 1970 film version directed by renowned cinematographer William Fraker, the first (and by far the best) of his handful of directing credits. (They did it again for TV in 2003, with Tom Selleck and Keith Carradine; pretty good, supposedly, but I never saw it.) Very, very scarce in the first edition. [Please note that there has been some discreet reinforcement applied to the front hinge of the book by a professional paper conservator.] .
