        The Collector

London: Jonathan Cape, 1963. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. 1st edition, preceding the American. His first book. Variant binding in black cloth, top edge unstained, and copies in black were actually sold in retail stores, so it is a published issue. Near fine in near fine 1st state dustjacket (no reviews on flap). I try to deny myself delusions when I am writing, and I think this allows me to deny them to others when they refuse to keep their fantasies to themselves, and this book inspires more than its share. Our jacket's not price clipped and among the wild claims attached to Collectors in black, is that all copies were sold in price clipped jackets. And that's not the only myth attached to this issue. It's said to be rare when there are 5 copies for sale right now. It's called a trial binding, or an export issue, with no proof at all. And whether it's (likely) the 1st binding in standard Cape black cloth used while awaiting delivery of, or deciding upon, the terracotta colored cloth normally seen, or (less likely) the 2nd binding in standard Cape black used for the final sets of sheets when the terracotta had run out, or been abandoned for a while, it's not a $10,000 book. It's not a $5,000 book. And it should be wrapped in crime scene tape when it's sold to anyone guileless enough to buy one at any price beyond our price. It is, however, 30 times scarcer than the regular binding for 3 times the price here, so the math supports our premium and decrypts its relative value (Book Code).

In a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with light wear to the extremities, foxing and toning to unprinted verso. Housed in a cranberry custom clamshell case, sunned at spine and edges. An excellent copy of the semi-autobiographical novel, published in the UK under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas eight years before its first American appearance. It is now perhaps the single most iconic female coming-of-age story.

        Portfolio One The Seasons

San Francisco: Sierra Club,, 1963. Folio. 12 original dye-transfer prints, dry-mounted as issued. With two copies of the title and limitation page (as usual). Housed in a linen portfolio with ties, gilt titles to front panel. A fine copy. First edition, first printing, of this fine suite of colour nature photographs. "As its name implies, the dye transfer process literally involves transferring dyes (cyan, magenta, and yellow) in succession and in careful registration onto a sheet of gelatin-coated paper. Porter remained committed to the dye-transfer process, both before and after the invention of simpler and more commonly used color papers, because it delivered richly colored prints and allowed him to control the exact hues and contrast of each final print" (Eliot Porter Collection Guide, Amon Carter Museum of American Art website). Having pursued colour photography since the 1930s, Porter found his first real publishing success with the Sierra Club, who published his Thoreau-inspired photoessay, In Wildness is the Preservation of the World, in 1962. Porter served as director of the Sierra Club, an early leader in the American conservationist movement, from 1965 to 1971.

Comments. Original Manuscript by George Seferis.

      - Two page autographed handwritten poem completely in the hand of George Seferis. Translated from the Greek: "The porch had darkened, by our side there was a rush in the two hearts had sheltered a confession. And the voice was entrapped in our lips, and we made mistakes and only from the depths of the body, Oh my God, we were waiting for a blessing. Darkness was blowing in the house and from the light of the star oh, your hair's magnet remember the inaccessible angel. With the fast rings on the floor suddenly like an air blowing in the thought that we were reading the Bible with a prayer. Woman, my soul's stranger, your delight was left to me, nice beloved woman tonight this foolish today. And the black rings of your eyes, and the nights horror. Bend to get into the case again, blade of my silence, chimera. George Seferis." Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 16 inches by 19 inches. In 1963, George Seferis was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature "for his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture." Seferis was the first Greek to receive the prize. While Seferis has sometimes been considered a nationalist poet, his 'Hellenism' had more to do with his identifying a unifying strand of humanism in the continuity of Greek culture and literature.         Lyndon Johnson

, 1963-1969. 1963-1969. Autograph Letter Signed "Lyndon B. Johnson" as President on a 4" x 2.25" thick card bearing the presidential seal at top center. Accompanied by the original unsealed envelope with a matching gilt seal on the back flap. With a transmittal slip, 6.25" x 6", which accompanied the flowers sent with the card. All in fine condition.LBJ's letter, in full, "To Bob Sorry to hear of your being in the hospital. Take care - get Well - Hurry back. Our best always Lyndon B. Johnson."The transmittal slip bears a 19th century vignette of the North Portico engraved at the top "The White House / Washington." Filled in by typewriter "To Mr. Robert Perry. / 4 - D. / Bethesda Naval Hospital." Engraved along the bottom: "Perishable Flowers. Keep from frost and extreme heat."An ALS of Lyndon B. Johnson as President is rarely encountered. Although not penned on a larger sheet of White House stationery, this is a 15-word letter plus salutation and closing with full signature, much more than a "note" defined by The Manuscript Society as "a very brief message."

        Koekblik [cookie tin]

Amsterdam, NV de Vereenigde Blikfabrieken (Verblifa), 1963. Tin icosahedron box with cardboard bottom inserted. Diameter 17 cm. l This uniquely shaped box was designed by the Dutch graphic artist Maurits Escher (1898-1972) on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Verblifa, then one of the largest producers of tin objects in the Netherlands. It has been embossed with a typical "Escherian" regular pattern of seashells and starfish; a pattern Esscher used only here. This is the so-called regular convex, or Platonic icosahedron, which is the most regular one. Few of these 20-faced cookie tins have survived. Apart from some spots to top part, this tin is in good condition, with a pentagonal cardboard bottom that is seldom seen, but probably original. Bool, p. 151.
