Adagio religioso [in E-flat major] pour le Violon-Cello, avec accompgn. de Pianno[!], composé et dédiée à son ami A. Suck. Autograph musical manuscript

Oblong folio (336 x 262 mm.). Unbound. [i] (title), 2-9 pp. Notated in black ink on pre-printed 9-stave music paper specifically designed for music for a melody instrument with piano (groups of three staves, with the lower two closer to each other). Manuscript annotations to title in pencil in an unidentified hand: "(Gothenburg)" immediately below the composer's name; "8/63 durch C. [?]Wilckenberg Gothenburg gratis 12 Frei [...]" to lower left corner. With pagination (odd numbers to versos) in pencil and in a different hand; page 1 paginated "Seite 1." Outer bifolium detached. Browned and frayed at edges. An unknown work. Not in the most comprehensive work list in Československý hudební slovník (Prague: Státní hudební vydavatelství, 1963), which lists three other works for violoncello and piano. In an apparent attempt to adapt his first name to the French language, the composer spells it "Albert" on the title. The unorthodox spelling of his last name, "Hřimali," is also found in other autograph manuscripts, such as those at the National Museum, Prague. From a Czech family of musicians--his brother Jan was a professor of violin at the Moscow Conservatory and friend of Tchaikovsky--"Hřímalý... studied the violin with Moris Mildner at the Prague Conservatory (1855-61), after which he became the orchestral leader in Rotterdam (1861) and Göteborg (1862) and then returned to Prague... In 1874 he left Bohemia to become director of the Philharmonic in Czernowitz, Bukovina (now Chernovtsy, Ukraine)... Most of his large output was left in manuscript, but his opera Zakletý princ ('The Enchanted Prince') remained in the repertory of the Provisional Theatre [in Prague] after its production in 1872 and his Violin Concerto was often played by František Ondříček. Another opera, Švanda dudák ('Schwanda the Bagpiper'), was produced in Plzeň in 1896; he also wrote incidental music, songs, choruses and a requiem, chamber music and teaching manuals."         The Natural

London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1963. First Impression of Malamud's first novel, a classic of baseball literature. 8vo: 248pp, including the addendum, "Some notes on the game of baseball," for British readers. Publisher's royal blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt with red baseball device; beautifully illustrated dust jacket, priced 21s, lettered in black and yellow. Moderate spotting to page edges and (lightly) rear panel of jacket, otherwise Fine. Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors' works. ¶ First published in New York, in 1952, this is the story of Roy Hobbs, "modelled on Babe Ruth and Shoeless Joe Jackson. It tells of a hero's remarkable come-back after years of lost promise, and then the terrible self-ruining of his second chance." Hobbs is a prodigy whose career is sidetracked when he is shot by a woman whose motivation remains mysterious. "Towards the end of his painstaking revisions, at the last moment in the galley proofs, Malamud hit upon the sentence that clinched the meaning both of the book and of much of Malamud's own struggling career: 'We have two lives, Roy, the life we learn with and the life we have after that.' Writing was Malamud's second life." (Literary Encyclopedia) Filmed in 1984 with Robert Redford. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Fine- / Fine-.

"Perhaps no other collection of any type of book has had a catalogue that has become such a standard work in its field, used as much as an authoritative bibliography as a record of holdings (from a review by Martin Davies of volume XI in The Book Collector, Summer 2007, p.191). "The manuscript notes are naturally most numerous in the early parts. The sections of Part I on block-books and Mainz printing contain (apart from minor corrections) about three notes per page. One-third bring refinements to the description of the Museum copy, a further quarter relate to the collation of the edition; and in 47 pages there are 26 references to relevant publications" (from a review by W.         [Bay of Pigs Invasion] Heroes de Giron

[no place given, likely Havana]: La Comision de Orientacion Revolucionaria de la Direccion Nacional del partido Unido de la Revolucion Socialista, undated, ca. 1963. First Edition (?). Stapled wrappers. Good. Oblong quarto, unpaginated (about 50pp). A good copy in the original pictorial stapled wrappers. Text block partly coming away from the wrappers, which are somewhat foxed and have general edgewear, but minimal chipping. Some mild internal foxing, but mostly a clean example. This scarce volume honors the fallen men who successfully fought back the Bay of Pigs invasion (a total disaster for the US and the CIA), with gallant, yet modest headshots of each comrade who perished in the fighting, including their age and occupation. It contains an opening epitaph by Fidel Castro. Text in Spanish. OCLC locates four copies - three in the United States and one in the National Library of China. A really wonderful example of a propaganda document, dating from the first few years of Castro's reign, when he was being tested by both the United States and the weight of his own revolution.

        Portfolio One. The Seasons.

San Francisco: Sierra Club, 1963 - Folio. 12 original dye-transfer prints, dry-mounted as issued. With two copies of the title and limitation page (as usual). Housed in a linen portfolio with ties, gilt titles to front panel. A fine copy. First edition, first printing, of this fine suite of colour nature photographs. "As its name implies, the dye transfer process literally involves transferring dyes (cyan, magenta, and yellow) in succession and in careful registration onto a sheet of gelatin-coated paper. Porter remained committed to the dye-transfer process, both before and after the invention of simpler and more commonly used color papers, because it delivered richly colored prints and allowed him to control the exact hues and contrast of each final print" (Eliot Porter Collection Guide, Amon Carter Museum of American Art website). Having pursued colour photography since the 1930s, Porter found his first real publishing success with the Sierra Club, who published his Thoreau-inspired photoessay, In Wildness is the Preservation of the World, in 1962. Porter served as director of the Sierra Club, an early leader in the American conservationist movement, from 1965 to 1971. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Page proofs]: Where the Wild Things Are

New York: Harper & Row, 1963. Near Fine. Measuring 56" x 42". Some light wear at edges and a few light scattered creases, near fine. A production page proof for Maurice Sendak's classic children's book, Where the Wild Things Are. The proof is printed on both sides and retains its original bright and vibrant colors. It comes from the personal archives of a distinguished children's book author and editor who worked closely with both Sendak and the book's editor, Ursula Nordstrom. While there is no jacket present to verify the issue points, as typical for a first edition of the book, the title page is conspicuously missing its Library of Congress identification number suggesting it was printed prior to securing one as required for publication. Further, we have only been able to locate one other known copy of page proof for Where the Wild Things Are in the Maurice Sendak Collection at the Rosenbach Museum, and it too lacks the LOC number on the title page. An amazing artifact from what is one of the most popular and influential children's book of the 20th Century.copies.

A Very Good or better copy. The invitation is addressed to Joseph Rutledge (1928-1916), a Quaker activist from New York. Sponsors for the march are listed as James Farmer (CORE), Rev. Martin Luther King (SCLC), John Lewis (SNCC), A. Philip Randolph (Negro American Labor Council), Roy Wilkins (NAACP), and Whitney Young (Urban League). Various religious organizations are listed as supporting the march. No other copies found in commerce as of April 22, 2017. No institutional holdings found in OCLC WorldCat. SCARCE.
